Even the story of the city we just visited, London, won't be a detailed guide about "where to go" or "what to see", also because we are talking about... London, you don't need us to know that Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey worth a visit ...

Abbiamo visitato la città più importante della Gran Bretagna per ben due volte, ma in entrambe le occasioni il motivo era sportivo. O meglio, tennistico: prima Wimbledon (2009), poi le Atp Finals. Per la visita delle bellezze londinesi abbiamo avuto sostanzialmente due giorni e se nella prima, cinque anni fa, avevamo addirittura optato per il sightseeing bus, nella seconda è stata la metro a farci compagnia. Senza una guida a farci da spalla e senza neppure un'idea precisa sul cosa visitare e non.
We visited the most important city of Great Britain twice, and always the main reason was a sport event, a tennis event. In 2009, our first time in London, was Wimbledon, then the Atp World Tour Finals. We spent basically two days visiting London and if five years ago we opted for the sightseeing bus, the second time we used the underground. Without a guide, and without an idea about what to visit or not.

Ma andiamo con ordine. Dici Londra e, se vuoi risparmiare, dici aereoporto di Stansted (se si è scelto di volare con Ryanair), distante un'ora dalla capitale. Con 16£ il bus della Terravision vi porterà, andata e ritorno, in pieno centro (Victoria Station oppure Liverpool Street).
If you say London and you're going to save money, obviously you are flying with Ryanair to Stansted, one hour far from the capital downtown. With 16 pounds a Terravision bus will take you there and back: Victoria Station or Liverpool Street are the stops
Se a Londra è molto, molto semplice usare la metro (underground), non altrettanto è capire come funzioni l'acquisto dei biglietti. Sicuramente avremo capito male noi e commesso qualche errore, ma con l'Oyster è stata una battaglia persa (se dovete recarvi a Londra, controllate il funzionamento di questa card) e quindi abbiamo optato per tre biglietti giornalieri per le zone 1-6. Carissimi (8.60£ a giorno a testa), anche se ci hanno permesso di potere indifferentemente utilizzare la metro oppure i famosi bus rossi a due piani.
If London is very very simple to visit using the underground, it's not so easy to understand how to buy tickets. Surely we got it wrong and made some mistakes, but with the "Oyster"it has been a disaster (if you have to go to London, check the operation of this card). So we opted for a day ticket for the 1-6 areas. Expensive (£ 8.60 per day, £25.40 for three days), even if we were allowed to use this ticket even for the famous red double-decker bus.

Archiviato il capitolo metro e realizzato che a Londra i mezzi pubblici non sono cari, sono carissimi e che nel complesso costa tutto tantissimo (impossibile o quasi fare affari a livello di shopping), girare per la città è semplicissimo. La nostra base è l'hotel Ibis, non lontano dal quartiere di Kensington. E' già sera e quindi ora di cena, scegliamo di fare, come sempre, gli americani ma, se nelle due serate successive abbiamo sempre indovinato la scelta, non si può dire altrettanto della prima cena all'Hard Rock Cafè (zona Green Park, a cinque minuti a piedi dalla fermata della metro). Un'ora e un quarto di attesa per il tavolo e soprattutto prezzi troppo, troppo elevati anche se la qualità era molto buona, sia delle ribs che del pollo. Se cercate l'"american style" però a Londra c'è dell'altro. E spenderete la metà...
We immediately realize that London public transport are very expensive and that it's not a "cheaper city". Our base is Ibis hotel, not far from Kensington. It 's already evening, it's dinner time! We choose to act, as always, as americans, but if we guessed the choice during the two following nights, you can not say the same for the first dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (Green Park area, five-minute walk from the underground station). We are forced to wait for one hour before getting the table and the menu is very expensive, even if the quality is very good (we order ribs and roast chicken. If you look for the ''American Style 'in London there is something better and cheaper...
Usciamo dall'Hard Rock non pieni, di più. E con la brillante idea di non prendere immediatamente la metro. bensì di camminare una decina di minuti. Bene, saranno quasi quattro chilometri, attraversando Green Park sino a raggiungere Buckingham Palace. Finita? Macchè, attraversiamo anche il St James's park sino all'omonima fermata della metro. Forse è il caso di tornare...
We leave the Hard Rock Cafè very full, the only thing we can do is walking for a while. 10 minutes? No, no... 4 chilometers, crossing Green Park till reaching Buckingham Palace. Is it over? Of course not: crossing St James's Park we finally get to the underground station. Maybe it's time to come back...
