Easter in Lyon (day 2, part 2)

Ci eravamo lasciati a Presqu'ile, nel cuore della penisola racchiusa dai due fiumi (Saona e Rodano) dopo aver macinato in mezza giornata già molti chilometri. Camminando per le vie della città abbiamo già toccato molti dei luoghi imperdibili e, seguendo la nostra lista, ne mancherebbero solamente due...

We left you at Presqu'ile (Easter in Lyon, day 2 - part 1), in the middle of the peninsula surrounded by two rivers (Saône and Rhône), after a long walk in a just half day. Walking the streets of the city we have already touched many of the must see places and, following our list, just two places have still to be visited.

Il primo è Croix Rousse, l'altra collina lionese, quella denominata "che lavora". Qui scegliamo di non utilizzare la funicolare (che parte dalla cattedrale di St Jean), ma da Place De La Terreaux scegliamo la più scenografica (Montèè della Grande Cote) delle vie che portano sino alla cima, strada abitata per secoli dai lavoratori della seta, i Canuts.

The first one is Croix Rousse, the other hill of Lyon, called also "the hill that works". Here we choose not to get the funicular (which leaves from St Jean's Cathedral): starting from the Place De La Terreaux we walk along the most scenic (Montèè of the Grande Cote) road that leads up to the top, a street that has been inhabited for centuries by silk workers, called Canuts.

La salita non è per nulla faticosa ed incredibilmente affascinante contornata dagli splendidi colori delle case lionesi.

The climb isn't difficult at all, it's just incredibly fascinating. We are surrounded by the beautiful colors of the typical houses of the city.

Arrivati in cima non solo si gode di un bellissimo panorama sulla città (in lontananza scorgiamo anche l'altra collina, Fourvière), ma anche di un'atmosfera rilassata. Coppiette che si rilassano con un gelato, persone che leggono un buon libro...

At the top we can enjoy a beautiful view of the entire Lyon (in the background there is the other hill, Fourvière) but even a relaxed atmosphere. Couples that are enjoying their ice-cream, people who are are reading a good book...

Lasciata la Croix Rousse ci dirigiamo verso il non lontano Parc de la Tete, polmone verde della città a più grande parco urbano di Francia. Non vediamo l'ora di raggiungerlo nonostante il tempo non sia bellissimo.

Leaving the beautiful Croix Rousse we head towards the Parc de la Tete, the largest urban park in France and a kind of oasis in a huge city. We really can't wait to be there even if the weather isn't so good.

Al suo interno un lago, un giardino botanico, un velodromo e molto altro: il fiore all'occhiello è comunque lo zoo (gratuito), che scopriamo per caso e che subito ci colpisce.

Inside the park you can find a lake, a botanic garden, a velodrome and much more. The most beautiful part is definitely the zoo (free of charge):

Tanti, tantissimi animali, dai leoni alle giraffe, dagli orsi alle scimmie. Solo l'orso sembra molto triste, l'Ale (da sempre innamorata degli orsi) vorrebbe portarselo a casa. Il pomeriggio non poteva concludersi meglio...

A lot of animals, from lyons to giraffes, from bears to monkeys. Just the bear seems to be very sad and Ale, who loves bears, would like to take him home. The afternoon could not have ended better ...

E' quasi ora di cena e, ovviamente, è nostra intenzione continuare ad assaggiare le specialità del luogo. Ci rechiamo dunque alla "vecchia Lione" affascinati da quei ristoranti che qui vengono chiamati "bouchon", trattorie nelle quali vengono serviti piatti tipici.

It's almost dinner time and obviously our intention is to taste all the specialties of this place. So we decide to come back to the old Lyon (Lyon Vieux) fascinated by those restaurants which are also called "bouchon", kind of restaurants where you can eat typical dishes of this region.

Nella Lyon Vieux ce ne sono moltissimi (ricordano i quartieri latini di Parigi) e c'è solamente l'imbarazzo della scelta. Come saprete la cena in ogni viaggio è la parte più importante e, dopo averne visti parecchi e controllato anche su tripadvisor, finalmente scegliamo.

There are many "bouchons" in the Vieux Lyon (they are similar to the restaurants you can find in the Latin Quarters of Paris) and you have just to choose the one you like the most. As you know, dinner is the most important part of every single travel: so, after having seen several restaurants and also checked on tripadvisor, finally "the decision".

Optiamo il ristorante che esteticamente ci sembra tra i più carini (Le Francois Villon), senza badare troppo al menù anche perchè tutti offrono sostanzialmente le stesse cose ed i prezzi sono molto simili (dai 17 ai 28 euro per un menù intero: il prezzo varia ovviamente a seconda dei piatti che vi sono inseriti).

We decide to go to the one that appears to be the cutest (Le Francois Villon), without paying much attention to the menu also because they all offer basically the same things and prices are very similar (from 17 euros to 28 euros for a full menu).

La scelta è azzeccata, assaggiamo finalmente anche il "famoso" Cervelle de Canut, il cui nome incute timore, ma non è altro che un buonissimo formaggio cremoso, perfetto con la baguette e altre salse che ci vengono offerte. Non può mancare neppure il dolce tipico, la Tarte aux Pralines...

The menu is very good: we finally taste the "famous" Cervelle de Canut, whose name is a bit strange, but it is nothing more than a delicious cream cheese, perfect with baguette (typical french bread) and other sauces. We can not miss even the typical dessert, the Tarte aux Pralines ...

Easter in Lyon (day 3)

Avendo sostanzialmente toccato già durante il primo giorno le principali attrazioni della città, concentriamo la nostra seconda giornata a Lione sui luoghi magari meno famosi e turistici, ma sicuramente più caratteristici. Niente metro, almeno per il momento. Ci affidiamo al tram che ci porterà in una delle area più nuove e maggiormente in crescita di Lione: La Confluence, che tecnicamente si troverebbe all'interno della Presqu'ile (a sud, dove Saona e Rodano s'incontrano), ma che si presenta molto diversa.

Having already touched substantially all the main attractions of the city during the first day, we can focus our second day in Lyon on places perhaps less famous and not so touristy, but definitely the most characteristic. The cable car will take us to one of the newest and fastest growing areas of Lyon: The Confluence, which technically is a part of Presqu'ile (south of Presqu'ile, where the Saône and Rhone meet each other) even if it's completely different from Presqu'ile.

Qui siamo in pieno sviluppo, se amate l'arte questo è il vostro posto, con in testa ovviamente il museo de la Confluence. che racconta la vita umana sino ai giorni nostri in chiave futuristica

Here we are in full development, if you love art this is your place. The museum "de la Confluence" is a must: it tells the human life, from the beginning, in a futuristic way.

Noi siamo solo di passaggio, ci fermiamo nel nuovissimo e grandissimo centro commerciale per una veloce colazione (Pole de Loisirs et de Commerce) ed una breve passeggiata, prima di riprendere il tram e dirigerci verso la vecchia stazione.

We are just passing through this district. The new shopping center is perfect for a quick breakfast and for a walk (Pole de Loisirs et de Commerce) before taking the cable car again and head towards the old station.

Siamo nel quartiere di Brotteaux, all'interno della Presqu'ile: la stazione, rinnovata tra il 2002 ed il 2006, ora ospita ristoranti e negozi. Sarà forse per l'orario (sono le 10 del mattino), sarà perchè ci aspettavamo qualcosa in più, ma rimaniamo delusi. L'interno non pare visitabile e dopo aver scattato qualche foto di rito ci rimettiamo in cammino...

We are now in the district of Brotteaux, within the Presqu'ile: the station has been renovated between 2002 and 2006 and now houses restaurants and shops. We don't know if it's because it's early in the morning of maybe because our expectations are very high, but it's a bit disappointing. We apparently can't go inside, so we can just take some pictures...

Riordiniamo le idee nella splendida ed immensa Place Bellecour. E con in mano un "macaron" vien anche tutto più facile...

In the beautiful and immense Place Bellecour we are planning the rest of the day. Holding a "macaron" is even easier...

Linea gialla della metro, fermata Henon, per quella che non sappiamo ancora essere la grande sorpresa in positivo della giornata. Le Mur des Canuts, uno stupendo ed immenso murales che raffigura la vita nella Croix Rousse.

Yellow line (subway), stop at Heno. We don't know yet that this place would be the big surprise of the day. Le Mur des Canuts, a beautiful and huge murals depicting life in Croix Rousse.

Talmente fatto bene da... sembrare reale.

Realizzato nel 1987 è ovviamente il più grande d'Europa e sotto un portico adiacente al palazzo viene anche raccontata sia la sua storia che la sua evoluzione. Nei vari pannelli potete ammirare anche le precedenti versioni.

Made in 1987, it is obviously the biggest in Europe. In a porch close to the palace you can even see the history of the Le Mur de Canuts and the former versions. 

Credevamo di essere soli, in realtà sono in parecchi ad aver avuto la stessa nostra idea. Nulla però ci fermerà e, diciamocela tutta, le foto in pose stranissime tanto per confermare che siamo "stupidini" non potevamo mancare.

We thought we would have been alone, actually there are many tourists.But nothing will stop us and, let's face it all, taking weird pictures is a must.

Soprattutto quando è l'Ale ad essere coinvolta.

Especially if Ale is involved...

E' la giornata delle particolarità e ce ne sono altre due che ci interessano particolarmente, entrambe situate a nord, nel 9ème arrondissement (fermata metro Gare de Vaise, non vicinissima). E' ora di pranzo e la prima non poteva che essere culinaria...

It's the day of the particularities and there are other two places very, very particular, both located in the north, in the 9ème arrondissement (subway station - Gare de Vaise). It's lunch time and the first stop is obviously a restaurant.

Avevamo, infatti, sentito parlare di Ouest Express, un fast food il cui proprietario è Paul Bocuse, uno dei più grandi chef francesi e promotore della novelle cuisine.

We've heard about this "Ouest Express", a fast food restaurant whose owner is Paul Bocuse, one of the greatest French chefs and promoter of the "nouvelle cuisine".

Interessante l'idea che una sorta di "Gualtiero Marchesi francese" proponga piatti "per tutti", meno la qualità e soprattutto i prezzi. Tradotto in soldoni, esperienza abbastanza deludente... come deludenti sono anche le recensioni trovate successivamente su tripadvisor, a conferma delle nostre iniziali sensazioni non positive.

The idea is very interesting. Its' nice that an important chef proposes dishes "for all the people", but quality and especially prices are disappointing. Even the reviews found on tripadvisor confirm that we weren't wrong.

A due passi dall'Ouest Express c'è l'I-Way, a cui Marco teneva moltissimo. Al suo interno, infatti, oltre ad un lounge-restaurant ed una Spa, si trovano i più realistici simulatori di un F18 (aviazione), ma soprattutto di di Formula 1, di rally e di vetture da Endurance (http://www.i-way-world.com/). Introvabili da qualsiasi altra parte del mondo. Da buon appassionato di automobilismo Marco è eccitatissimo, ma la sua gioia viene subito placata dai prezzi. Per qualche minuto di prove o gara si sorpassa tranquillamente i 60 euro. Sarà per un'altra volta...

Two steps far from "Ouest Express" there is the "I-Way". Inside it, in addition to a lounge-restaurant and a Spa, there is the most realistic simulation of an F18 (aviation), but especially of Formula 1, rally cars and Endurance (http://www.i-way-world.com/). You can't find something like this in any other part of the world. As a good fan of motorsport Marco is really excited, but prices immediatley calm him dowm. For a few minutes of practice (or race) you have to pay more than 60 euro. Maybe next time...

Un giretto per il quartiere affaristico di Part-Dieu (secondo più grande di Francia dopo La Defense di Parigi) e chiudiamo il nostro pomeriggio e di conseguenza l'esperienza lionese (sì perchè, stanchissimi, ceneremo in hotel approfittando del bouffet a prezzi contenutissimi) con un altro giro per le vie della Lyon vieux, la Lione vecchia.

A walk around the business district of Part-Dieu (the second largest in France after La Defense in Paris) and then we are ready to end our afternoon and consequently our experience in Lyon (we have dinner at the hotel) with another round through the streets of the Vieux Lyon, the old Lyon.

E finalmente ci mettiamo alla caccia dei caratteristici traboules (www.lyontraboules.net), passaggi più o meno nascosti (non tutti accessibili al pubblico) che ti permettono non solo di attraversare intere vie, ma anche di vedere l'interno di antichi palazzi ed ammirare alcuni particolari elementi architettonici locali.

Finally it's time to look for the the typical traboules (www.lyontraboules.net), passes more or less hidden (not all accessible to the public) that allow you not only to cross entire streets, but also to see the interior of ancient buildings and see some details of the local architecture.

La regola è una sola: rispettare il silenzio e la quiete dei residenti...

The rule is just one: to respect the peace and quiet of the people who live there ...

Easter in Lyon (day4-5, Annecy)

Se si sta visitando Lione e si ha la possibilità di muoversi con la propria vettura, una delle mete obbligate ai piedi delle Alpi, nella regione della Valle del Rodano, è sicuramente Annecy, nota anche come "la Venezia della Savoia" (paragone se vogliamo un attimino azzardato) e meta ogni anno per migliaia di turisti.

If you are visiting Lyon and can drive your own car, one of the "must visit" destinations at the foot of the Alps, in the region of the Rhone Valley, is definitely Annecy, also known as "the Venice of Savoy", visited every year by thousands of tourists.

Siamo ad un'ora dal confine italiano, ma anche da Ginevra e quindi dalla Svizzera ed ovviamente anche da Lione.

Annecy is located just an hour from the Italian border, but also from Geneva (Switzerland) and of course even from Lyon.

Lasciamo i bagagli nel nostro hotel (Beau Site: posizione e location ottime, struttura scadente), situato sull'altra sponda del lago, nella sicuramente più economica Talloires.

We leave out bags at our hotel (Beau Site: excellent location and position, poor structure), located on the other side of the lake, in the definitely cheaper Talloires.

Annecy sembra davvero essere uscita da un libro di fiabe, tra il lago ed i suoi canali, tra ristoranti e negozi di souvenir. E' aprile ma fa ancora freddino: una passeggiata per le sue vie tuttavia non possiamo farcela mancare, partendo ovviamente dal "pont des amours", il ponte dell'amore, situato proprio a ridosso del lago, lungo il Canal de Vassè.

Annecy really seems to be came out of a storybook, between the lake and its channels, restaurants and souvenir shops. It's april but it is still pretty cold: a walk around its ways is a anyway a must, starting of course frome the "pont des amours", the bridge of love, right near the lake, along the Canal de Vassé.

Sì, è decisamente romantica. Riesce a convincersi anche l'Ale, rimasta non troppo entusiasta dalla temperatura quasi invernale.

Well, it's very romantic. It manages to convince even Ale about that.

Decidiamo di seguire il fiume Thiou, il più corto di Francia (3.5 km) che si snoda lungo le vie della città.

We decide to follow the Thiou river, the shortest of France (3.5 km) which runs along the city streets.

Il simbolo della cittadina è sicuramente il Palais de l'Isle, edificio del tutto particolare, una volta anche prigione della città ed ora teatro di un museo. Una foto con il Palais sullo sfondo è obbligatorio. Lo pensiamo noi, ma lo pensano anche la centinaia di turisti che come noi stanno visitando Annecy.

The symbol of Annecy is definitely the Palais de l'Isle, a very special building, once it has also been the city jail, but now is a museum. A photo with the Palais in the background is required. We and the the hundreds of tourists who are visiting Annecy want it!

Proseguiamo la nostra visita lungo i canali alla ricerca del miglior ristorante, visto che l'ora di cena non è poi così lontana.

We continue the visit along the streets looking for the best restaurant: it's almost dinner time... 

Si assomigliano più o meno tutti, come prezzi e menù. Noi scegliamo bene, il Les Tables (consigliatissimo!) dove finalmente riusciamo a gustarci, oltre ad un'ottima carne...

All the restaurants are very similar. Prices and food are basically the same. We choose good, the Les Tables (highly recommended!), where we can taste an excellent meat ...

and finally the long-waited cheese fondue.

Ci sono le cose buone da mangiare... poi c'è la fonduta di formaggi con pane francese ed un buon vino! Chi non l'ha ancora assaggiata non sa cosa si sta perdendo...

There are good things to eat ... then there is the cheese fondue with french bread and a fine wine above all! Those who have not tasted it yed don't know what they're missing... 

Di sera, se possibile, Annecy diventa ancora più bella.

In the evening Annecy becomes even more beautiful.

Passeggiamo un'ultima volta e nel frattempo "studiamo" il programma della giornata successiva, l'ultima.

We go for the last walk while "studying" the program of the next day, the last one.

Sulla via del ritorno, infatti, ci fermeremo a ad una ventina di chilometri da Annecy per visitare il Les Gorges du Fier, nella cittadina di Lovagny.

On the way back, in fact, we will stop about twenty kilometers from Annecy at Les Gorges du Fier, in the town of Lovagny.

Dopo aver acquistato il ticket d'ingresso (5.50) percorriamo una lunghissima passerella sospesa nel vuoto...

After purchasing the entrance ticket (5.50 euros) we cross a long narrow footbridge suspended in the air ...

Sotto di noi il canyon e il fenomeno dell'erosione dell'acqua corrente.

The river has carved out one of the most magnificent examples of erosion by running water, considered to be one of the natural eonders of the Alps

Una passeggiata non banale, non impegnativa ma sicuramente sconsigliabile a chi soffre di vertigini.

We venture deep  into the giant gorge with the river Fier flowing at its base: The play of light and shadows makes extraordinary faces appearing along the lenght of the rock face. but if you are a vertigo suffers please pay attention...

Sotto la passerella, costruita nell'800, ad una distanza di 20/30 metri, il torrente Fier.

Under the footbridge, built 200 years ago, you can see the river, 20-30 meters below.

Un'oretta ben spesa, la ciliegina sulla torta della positivissima esperienza in terra di Francia, che si conferma, dopo ovviamente gli Stati Uniti, il nostro stato preferito.

An hour well spent, the icing on the cake of the very positive experience in France, which remains, of course after the United States, our favorite country.
