2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 16-17: Rancho Mirage - Los Angeles)

Il viaggio lungo la route sta per concludersi e gli ultimi 200 chilometri, quelli che separano Rancho Mirage da Los Angeles, sono una centrifuga di emozioni. Il viaggio che più ha segnato il nostro spirito ci sta regalando le ultime miglia e non riusciamo davvero ad entrare nell'ottica che presto voleremo verso le Hawaii. Nella nostra testa c'è solamente Santa Monica e il molo. Ci dimentichiamo pure che stiamo per entrare nella città che meno amiamo tra tutte quelle americane, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles del Rio de la Porciúncula, che il mondo conosce più semplicemente come Los Angeles. Spenderemo un giorno e mezzo nella città degli "Angeli" e, consapevoli che il rischio quando raccontiamo di un luogo di cui non siamo innamorati è quello di non trasmettere le giuste emozioni, partiamo da un luogo che di emozioni invece ce ne ha date moltissime. Il molo più famoso al mondo, quello della cittadina costiera di Santa Monica. Non per la sua bellezza e neppure per l'enorme mole di turisti che lo vive (e che ci piace il giusto...), ma perchè è proprio qui che, come vuole la leggenda, si conclude la route 66.

The journey along the route is almost complete and the last 200 kilometers that separate Rancho Mirage from Los Angeles are really full of emotions. The trip that has most marked our spirit is giving us the last few miles and we cannot still realize that we will fly to Hawaii very soon. In our minds there is only Santa Monica and the world famous pier. We even forget that we are about to enter the city we don't like at all among all the American ones. El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles del Rio de la Porciúncula but the world simply knows it as Los Angeles. We will spend a day and a half in the "city of  Angels" and, we know that when we tell about a place we don't like that much iwe are not able show the right emotions right emotions. So it's better to begin from a place which has given us a lot of emotions. The most famous pier in the world, that of the coastal town of Santa Monica. Not for its beauty and not even for the huge amount of tourists who lives it but because this is where, as legend says, the route 66 ends.

Una fine fittizia, creata ad arte dagli americani a cui piace  condire con un pizzico di "pepe hollywoodiano" tutto ciò che ha fatto la storia. Ma per una volta chiudiamo un occhio, non ci interessa che la "Mother road" reale si concluda qualche miglio prima, in downtown. Il cartello è qui, il "end of the trail" è qui e sinceramente siamo commossi.

This is an artificial end, made by the americans who wanted to create a kind of "hollywoodian spirit" on a road which have made history. The historic route officially and poetically ends on the Santa Monica Pier. For once we close our eyes, we do not care that the "Mother Road" real ends a few miles before, in downtown Los Angeles. The sign is here, the "end of the trail" is here and we are sincerely moved.

Ripensiamo ai luoghi, alle persone, alle storie ed ai racconti degli 8 stati attraversati dalla route 66 e ci viene in mente la frase di Lena Turner, la moglie di Gary, i due signori della Gas Station "Gay Parita" di cui avremmo tanto voluto sentire i racconti, ma che da poco purtroppo ci hanno lasciato. "Quando arriverete a Santa Monica tutto questo vi mancherà e vorrete tornare indietro". Aveva ragione. La route 66, quella che per anni è stata la strada la speranza per milioni di americani, ci manca già.

We think back to the places, the people and the stories of the 8 states crossed by the route 66 and there comes Lena Turner's words, Gary's wife. You will definitely remember them, two amazing people just passed away. "You’ll see... it’s a family, all of us on Route 66. When you get to Santa Monica, you’ll miss it and want to come back.” We've never met her. anyway she was right. Route 66  has been the hope for millions of Americans for many years and we already miss it.

Il caos losangeleno ed in particolare di Santa Monica ci riporta alla realtà. Abbiamo un giorno intero da spendere e qualche luogo insolito da visitare. Nella nostra "wish list" ce ne sono diversi, alcuni dei quali pochissimo conosciuti al grande pubblico, ma il traffico cittadino ci obbligherà alle solite scelte dolorosissime. 

The noise of Los Angeles and in particular of Santa Monica takes us back to reality. We have a whole day to spend and some unusual place to visit. In our "wish list" there are several places some of them little known to the general public. But the city traffic will force us to the usual painful choices.

Saltiamo l'intera area della città di Pasadena (nord est di Los Angeles) dove avremmo voluto visitare il Colorado Street Bridge, l'Old Mill (edificio più antico della California) e la Gamble House, uno dei capolavori residenziali americani. Puntiamo invece verso il nord di downtown, esattamente al 1329 di Carrol Avenue dove, in un bellissimo quartiere di case vittoriane, ce n'è una del tutto particolare.

We skip the entire area of Pasadena (north east of Los Angeles) where we should have visited the Colorado Street Bridge, the "Old Mill" (California oldest building) and the Gamble House, one of the of the US residential masterpieces. We are going straight to north of downtown, the goal is 1329 Carroll Avenue where, in the beautiful neighborhood of Victorian houses, there is a very special place.

"Il potere del trio coincide con il mio". Per gli amanti del telefilm "streghe" questa non è una frase come le altre. E' qui che le tre sorelle Halliwell l'hanno pronunciata ed è qui che hanno vissuto (anche se il telefilm era ambientato a San Francisco). Questa è la casa di "Streghe", uno dei telefilm più seguiti degli anni duemila.

"The power of the three will set us free". For the tv series "Charmed" fans this is not a sentence like any others. The three Halliwell sisters have spoken here and this is the place where they lived (even if the show was set in San Francisco). This is the home of "Charmed", one of the most watched TV series of the new millennium.

Il secondo stop è il Griffith Observatory. Trovare parcheggio tra le colline losangelene non è facile, ma è un "must" la visita al più ampio parco municipale di Los Angeles che comprende un’area protetta con montagne e canyon e soprattutto sulla sommità della collina che domina la città lo storico Osservatorio Griffith, un edificio Art Deco che vanta l'osservatorio astronomico più visitato al mondo.

The second stop is the Griffith Observatory. Finding parking between the hills is not so easy, but it definitely worth a visit. This is the largest municipal park of Los Angeles which includes a protected area with mountains and canyons, and especially on the hilltop overlooking the town you'll find the Griffith Observatory, an Art Deco building with the most visited astronomical observatory in the world.

Non siamo lontani da Hollywood e dalla famosa scritta, avvolti da una wildlife quasi sorprendente.

Hollywood and the world famous Hollywood sign is not that far. Around us an almost surprising wildlife.

Vorremmo non solo avvicinarci all'Hollywood sign una volta lasciato l'osservatorio, ma spingerci fino alla sommità della collina, scavalcando di fatto la scritta. Camminiamo per diverse miglia in mezzo ai cespugli insieme ad altri avventurieri, chiediamo anche a diverse persone, ma la regola qui pare essere "bocche cucite".

Once left the Observatory we would like to come close to the Hollywood sign and also reach the top of the hill and the sign. We walk for several miles into the bushes with other visitors, we even ask locals for informations, but nobody talks here. The rule seems to be "tight-lipped".

Riusciamo ad avvicinarci ma non a raggiungere la vetta: questa volta siamo consapevoli che siamo noi a sbagliare qualcosa, ma non riusciamo a capire dove...

We manage to get close but not to reach the top: well, something is going wrong. but we can not figure out what's going wrong!

Non lontano da Hollywood e dal Griffith Observatory c'è un cimitero decisamente famoso. Per la verità non l'unico nella città degli angeli che può contare tra gli altri anche sul Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, dove sepolti vi sono Marylin Monroe, James Dean e diversi altri personaggi famosi hollywoodiani. Noi però decidiamo di visitare il Glendale Forest Lawn Cemetery, un cimitero situato sull'ennesima collina che domina Los Angeles. Qui riposano tra gli altri Walt Disney e Michael Jackson. Tuttavia entrambe le tombe sono private e quindi non accessibili: ci dobbiamo dunque accontentare di una sorta di mausoleo dedicato a "MJ", per la verità parecchio
deludente.

There is a very famous cemetery located not far from Hollywood and Griffith Observatory. To be honest it's not the only famous cemetery in the "city of angels": another one is the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, where you'll find the graves of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and several other famous Hollywood characters. However we decide to visit just the Glendale Forest Lawn Cemetery, located on a hill overlooking Los Angeles. Here lie Walt Disney and Michael Jackson. However, both graves are private and not open to public: we can just visit a kind of mausoleum dedicated to "MJ", actually very disappointing.

Attraversiamo Bel Air e lo Ucla Campus, sede di una delle università più famose al mondo (anche in campo sportivo), la UCLA, e torniamo sulla costa. La parte finale della giornata decidiamo di spenderla a Manhattan Beach, meno turistica rispetto a Santa Monica e Venice Beach, ma decisamente affascinante. Ceniamo al "The Rockefeller" a base di fish tacos e burger. Prezzi un filo sopra la media ma qualità elevata.

We pass through Bel Air and Ucla campus, home of one of the most famous universities in the world, (including sports), the UCLA, and then we come back to the coast. The less touristy Manhattan Beach will be the last stop of the day. It's very charming. We have dinner at "The Rockefeller":  fish tacos and burgers. Prices are above average but it's definitely quality food.

Stiamo per volare verso Honolulu, Hawaii, ma prima di recarci al "Lax" facciamo una breve sosta al Citadel Outlets (non lontano dall'aereoporto) e ci fermiamo in uno dei luoghi storici del malfamato quartiere di Inglewood (ma che noi amiamo), a due minuti di distanza dall'aereoporto losangeleno. Siamo da Randy's Donuts e la leggenda vuole che qui vengano servite le migliori donuts della California. I Red Hot Chili Peppers, nel video di Californication, inquadrano proprio Randy's, che è stato protagonista anche di altri film e serie Tv come Entourage e Californication. Ah, ovviamente noi continuiamo ad essere del tutto particolari e... le donuts, non ci sono piaciute. Le migliori continuano ad essere quelle di Dunkin Donuts... See you in Honolulu!

We're about to fly to Honolulu, Hawaii, but before going to "Lax" there's a quick stop at Citadel Outlet (not far from the airport) and then at a very special place. One of the most famous of the entire Los Angeles. It's Inglewood, surely not the best Los Angeles' neighborood, but one of our favourites one. Here lies Randy's Donuts and legend says that they serve the best donuts of the city. It appears in Californication, The Red Hot Chili Peppers song and also in TV series such as Entourage and Californication. Well, of course, we keep being very...weird and ... we didn't like that donuts so much. Dunkin Donuts still serves the best ones... See you in Honolulu!

Hawaii, finalmente Hawaii. Un sogno che si avvera, quel sogno che quasi inconsciamente parte dall'infanzia, quando alla domanda "dove vorresti andare da grande?" si risponde spesso e volentieri "alle Hawaii". Così lontane, ma finalmente anche così vicine. Scegliere quale isola visitare è stata un'impresa ardua: in internet si trovano pareri contrastanti e la conferma l'abbiamo avuta visitandole. Non c'è un'isola più bella dell'altra, sono semplicemente una diversa dall'altra e se doveste chiedere consiglio a qualche locale difficilmente vi risponderà. "Per noi ogni isola è come un figlio. Sono tutti diversi e tutti belli". Hanno ragione. Noi dopo mille ricerche abbiamo optato, considerato il fatto che è la nostra prima volta alle Hawaii, per le due più "famose", Oahu (tre giorni pieni) e Maui (quattro giorni pieni), rinunciando a malincuore sia a Kauai che a Big Island.

Hawaii, finally Hawaii. A dream come true, the dream that almost unconsciously begins from childhood, when you answer "Hawaii" when people ask  "Where would you go one day? So far away, but finally so close. Choosing which island to visit is a tough challenge: on the Internet there are conflicting opinions and we realizet that it's true visiting them. Any island is beautiful, they are simply different from each other and if you were to look for an advice from some local he will hardly reply. "For us, every island is like a son. They are all different and all beautiful." They are right. In the end we decided to visit the two most famous islands, Oahu (three full days) and Maui (full four days), reluctantly skipping both on Kauai and in Big Island.

Ci eravamo lasciati al Lax di Los Angeles. Dopo cinque ore di volo atterriamo all'Honolulu International Airport: ritiriamo l'auto e ci dirigiamo a Waikiki, dove alloggeremo, una sorta di versione turistica della confinante Honolulu. Grattacieli, negozi di alta moda, turisti, mare e divertimento. Questa è Waikiki. Molto poco hawaiana, molto, forse troppo, americana.

We left you at Lax in Los Angeles. Five hours fligh and we finally land at the Honolulu International Airport: let's get the car we've rented and go stright to Waikiki (where we're staying), a kind of tourist version of the neighboring Honolulu. Skyscrapers, high-fashion shops, tourists, sea and fun. This is Waikiki. Very little Hawaiian, so much american.

Nonostante la mattina successiva al nostro arrivo piova, l'entusiasmo è alle stelle. Partiamo con l'esplorazione dell'isola di Oahu da uno dei luoghi sacri della storia non solo americana, ma mondiale, ovvero il World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, meglio conosciuto come Pearl Harbor. E' qui che il 7 dicembre 1941 le forze aeronavali giapponesi attaccarono la flotta e le installazioni militari statunitensi stanziate appunto nella base navale di Pearl Harbor, provocando la morte di 2500 persone tra militari e civili. 

Despite it rains in the morning after our arrival, the enthusiasm is sky high. Let's start with the exploration of the island of Oahu from one of the sacred places of the american history, namely the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, better known as Pearl Harbor. Here, December  7, 1941 the  Japanese air naval forces attacked the fleet and the military american installations stationed precisely at the naval base at Pearl Harbor, killing 2,500 people between military and civilians.

Pearl Harbor è situato ad una quindicina di minuti a nord di Honolulu e consigliamo, anche se doveste avere effettuato una prenotazione online, di presentarvi alla biglietteria il prima possibile. Il rischio è quello di rimanere esclusi dalla visita. Non solo. Non è possibile entrare nel National Monument con zaini, borse etc: lasciarli al deposito vi costerà 3 dollari ad oggetto. Noi ovviamente li lasciamo nel baule della nostra auto.

Pearl Harbor is located about fifteen minutes north of Honolulu. We recommend, even if you have made a reservation online, to reach the ticket office as soon as possible. The risk is to be excluded from the visit. You've to remember also that entering the National Monument with backpacks, bags etc is forbidden. You'll be forced to leave them at the store and the pricss is $ 3 per object. We obviously leave them in the trunk of our car.

Non è semplicissimo intuire cosa possiate visitare con il vostro ticket (ce ne sono di diversi tipi), complice il fatto che alcune aree siano ad ingresso gratuito. Ancora oggi non abbiamo ben chiaro come funzioni, ma la visita all'Arizona Memorial ed ai musei dovrebbe essere gratuita previo l'ottenimento del ticket al visitor center. Da qui deriva il fatto del "chi primo arriva... entra", a prescindere da cosa abbiate acquistato online. 

It is not easy to guess which places you can visit with the ticket you've purchased (there are different tickets): some areas are also free admission. Even while we're writing it's not very clear how it works, but the Arizona Memorial and the museum should be free dmission, but you've to take the admission ticket (for free) ad the at the visitor center. The simple rule is "the first who comesz ... just enter".

Alcune aree come l'Oklahoma Memorial e l'USS Bowfin Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum sono invece a pagamento. Noi abbiamo prenotato (e pagato) il ticket che ci permetterà di visitare l'Oklahoma Memorial ed il Bowfin submarine, non il Battleship Missouri Memorial. Ad essere onesti ci aspettavamo qualcosina in più da un luogo dove è stata davvero scritta la storia della seconda guerra mondiale, per lo meno a livello di organizzazione. 

Some areas like the Oklahoma Memorial and the USS Bowfin Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pacific Aviation Museum are not free admission. We booked (and paid for it) the ticket that will allow us to visit the Oklahoma Memorial and the Bowfin submarine, not the Battleship Missouri Memorial. To be honest we expected a little more organization from a place where it was really written the history of World War II.

Dopo aver visionato sia il museo che il breve film a disposizione di coloro che hanno il ticket per l'Uss Arizona, prendiamo la barca che ci condurrà appunto al monumento dell'Arizona Memorial, il memoriale sorto proprio dove la Uss Arizona fu abbattuta. L'attacco portò alla morte di 1177 marinai e marines sui 1512 a bordo. Ci viene richiesto di non effettuare foto all'esterno del memoriale, ma solo all'interno, dove il muro in marmo ricorda i nomi di tutte le persone scomparse durante l'attacco.

If you got the ticket to the Uss Arizona you can watch a short movie and get the boat that leads precisely to the Arizona Memorial Monument, the memorial built right where the USS Arizona was bombed. The attack led 1,177 sailors and marines to death. We are asked not to take pictures outside of the memorial, but only inside, where the marble wall remembers the names of all missing people.

Posizionato a ridosso del visitor center è invece il Bowfin Submarine, la cui visita avviene con l'audio guida anche in italiano. Spazi davvero angusti, corridoi infiniti, sale macchine... se si vuol sperimentare quella che è la vita all'interno di un sottomarino, questo è davvero il posto giusto. 

Located near the visitor center there's also the Bowfin Submarine, whose visit comes with the audio guide in Italian. Very cramped spaces, endless corridors, engine rooms ... if you want to experience how's the life inside a submarine, this is really the right place.

Scopriamo che con il ticket acquistato possiamo usufruire anche dello shuttle che conduce a Ford Island, di fronte al Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, un'area off limits per la gente comune. Attraversiamo il ponte che conduce a Ford Island e superiamo i controlli, siamo all'interno di un'area militare nella quale sono posizionati sia il Pacific Aviation Museum of Pearl Harbour che il Battleship Missouri Memorial. Il "Missouri" è davvero imponente e le bandiere americane posizionate al suo esterno non fanno altro che renderlo ancora più suggestivo. Noi però siamo sprovvisti di ticket e decidiamo di ammirarlo solamente dall'esterno.

We find out that with the tickets we've purchased there's a free shuttle that leads to Ford Island, just in front of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, an off limits area for ordinary people. We cross the bridge pass the checks and finally are in this military area in which are located both the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor and the Battleship Missouri Memorial. The "Missouri" is really impressive and the American flags positioned on the outside make it even more impressive. Anyway we don't have the right ticket and we can just admire it from the outside.

Lasciato Pearl Harbor facciamo ritorno ad Honolulu fermandoci al pier 9, dove sorge l'Aloha Tower. Nel 1926, quando fu costruita, era l'edificio più grande dell'isola. L'orologio che svetta (sette tonnellate) era il più grande mai realizzato ed illuminava l'oceano fino a trenta chilometri di distanza. 

Left Pearl Harbor we come back to Honolulu stopping at the pier number 9, where stands the Aloha Tower. In 1926, when was built, it was the largest building on the island. The clock that stands (seven tons) was the largest ever made and illuminated the ocean up to thirty kilometers away.

Ora è un centro commerciale e noi, visto il brutto tempo, ne approfittiamo per effettuare uno dei pasti più pesanti della storia a base di alette di pollo piccanti (ottime) da Hooters, una catena di ristoranti molto famosa negli Usa per via delle cameriere vestite in abiti decisamente succinti. 

Nowadays the Aloha Tower has become a mall and thanks to the bad weather, we decide to have one of the haviest meal of our history. Spicy chicken wings at Hooters, a famous chain restaurants: in here waitresses are dressed with very skimpy outfits.

Sarà il cibo, o le cameriere... o il caldo che improvvisamente esce allo scoperto, ma il pomeriggio di Marco diventerà un calvario. Avremmo dovuto visitare alcune delle principali attrazioni di Honolulu (per la verità comunque molto anomima), ma ci limitiamo ad avventurarci in downtown sino a raggiungere Iolani Palace, il fiore all'occhiello della città. 

We don't know if it's because of the food or because of the waitresses, or maybe the heat that suddenly is coming out... but marco's afternoon is going to be an ordeal. We should visit some of the main attractions of Honolulu (actually not a great city), but we just walk through downtown until reaching Iolani Palace, the pride of the city.

Iolani Palace è il palazzo reale per eccellenza delle Hawaii. In un ipotetico tour a piedi della città, altri luoghi che è possibile visitare sono lo State Capitol, il palazzo del Governo, Washington Place (dove visse la regina Liliuokalani) e tutta la Honolulu storica. 

Iolani Palace is the most important royal palace of Hawaii. In a hypothetical walking tour of the city, other places which you can visit are the State Capitol, the Government House, Washington Place (the Queen Liliuokalani used to live there) and the whole historical Honolulu.

E quindi la Kawaiaho Church, la Honolulu Hale e le Cattedrali di Sant’Andrea e Nostra Signora della pace. Oltre ovviamente a Chinatown, vero cuore pulsante di Honolulu. 

Some places which worth a visit are the Kawaiaho Church, the Honolulu Hale and the Cathedrals of St. Andrew and Our Lady of Peace. And of course Chinatown, the true heart of Honolulu.

Una manciata di chilometri ad est della città vi sono poi due "Missioni" buddiste che decidiamo di visitare prima di rientrare. La Soto Zen Mission è l'esatta riproduzione dello "stupa" in India dove Guatama Budda parlò per la prima volta di Rivelazione, la Missione Honpa Hongwanji fu invece costruita nel 1819 per il 700esimo anniversario della setta buddista Shin. 

A few kilometers east of Honolulu there are two Buddhist missions we really would like to visit. Buddhist. The "Soto Zen Mission" is an exact reproduction of the indian "stupa" where Gautama Buddha spoke of Revelation for the first time, the other one is "Honpa Hongwanji Mission", built in 1819 for the 700th anniversary of the Shin Buddhist sect.

Il vero viaggio alle Hawaii comincia oggi. Dopo l'aperitivo del day 1 si fa finalmente sul serio. Sfruttando il fuso orario favorevole (-3 ore rispetto al time zone della costa ovest) ci svegliamo decisamente presto ed alle 8 siamo già sulla nostra auto in direzione sud, una decina miglia per l'esattezza, sulla costa sudovest dell'isola. Stiamo dirigendoci verso il Diamond Head Volcano State Monument, un vulcano a forma di cono diventato sin da subito uno dei simboli dell'isola di Oahu. 

The real hawaiian trip begins today. During day 1 we got acclimatized, now it's really time to go big. Taking advantage of the favorable time zone (-3 hours compared to the west coast time zone) we wake up very early in the morning and already ready to drive at 8. We're driving along the southwest coast of the island heading towards the Volcano Diamond Head State Monument (10 miles south of Honolulu), a volcano cone-shaped one of the symbols of the island of Oahu.

Dall'alto dei suoi 230 metri di altezza, il Diamond Head regala splendide viste sui grattacieli di Waikiki e Honolulu, ma anche sul resto del sud dell'isola, dove a svettare c'è il Diamond Head Lighthouse, il faro più luminoso del pacifico. L'ingresso al parcheggio di Diamond Head è a pagamento (5 dollari) e proprio dal parcheggio parte il sentiero di 1.6 miglia che si snoda nel "cono" più famoso di Oahu. 

From a height of 230 meters high, Diamond Head offers great views of the skyscrapers of Waikiki and Honolulu, but also on the rest of the south of the island, where lies the Diamond Head Lighthouse, the brightest lighthouse of the entire Pacific Ocean. The entrance to the Diamond Head parking lot has a fee (5 dollars) and just right from the parking begins the trail (1.6 miles) that winds through the most famous "cone" of Oahu.

Che durante la seconda guerra mondiale fungeva da insediamento militare; ora è invece il quartiere generale della difesa civile dell'isola. Sono soltanto le 8.30 del mattino ma il trail è già trafficatissimo. Impareremo subito che, eccezion fatta per Waikiki, in tutte le Hawaii la vita comincia prestissimo (intorno alle 7 del mattino) e si conclude molto presto (9 di sera). 

During the Second World War, Diamond Head served as a military settlement; now it's the headquarters of the civil defense of the island. It's only 8:30 am but the trail is already crowded. We immediately learn that, with the exception of Waikiki, life in Hawaii begins very early (around 7 am) and ends very soon (9 pm).

Il trail non è impegnativo anche se abbastanza lungo, eccezion fatta per una scalinata parecchio lunga ed un brevissimo tunnel in una grotta. Come sempre alle Hawaii saranno il caldo e l'umidita il nemico numero uno. Anche alle 8 del mattino. 

The trail is quite long but not difficult, except for a long staircase and a short tunnel into a cave. As always in Hawaii you have to fight with the heat and humidity: they're the enemy number one. Even at 8 am.

Tuttavia, una volta arrivati in cima, lo spettacolo che ci si apre davanti è di una bellezza stordente. Il mare da una parte ed il faro, dall'altra la parte selvaggia del sud di Ohau e, a nord, lo skyline di Waikiki-Honolulu. 

However, once you reach the top, the amazing view will be the gift you get. The sea on and the lighthouse, the southern part of Oahu and the skyline of Honolulu-Waikiki. You have just to choose which view you prefer the most.

Fatichiamo a farci spazio tra la folla ma, quando riusciamo ad ammirare scorci davvero suggestivi. Queste sono le Hawaii che avevamo in mente, Waikiki e già un lontanissimo ricordo. 

We struggle to get the right space in this crowded place, but then picturesque views appear in front of us. This is the Hawaii we had in mind, the Hawaii we were looking for, Waikiki is already the past.

Il secondo stop della giornata è situato nel cuore del sud dell'isola. non lontano dal Campus dell'Università delle Hawaii che copre una superficie di ben 121 ettari. Siamo al Lyon Arboretum, uno dei tanti giardini botanici hawaiani dall'aspetto naturale, che si estende su 80 ettari. I tentativi di incrocio di ibisco, rododendro, zenzero e calathea ha portato alla creazione di ben 148 specie ibride (parcheggio a pagamento, 5 dollari). Noi però restiamo affascinati più dal trail di 1.5 miglia che conduce alle cascate Maloa. Decidiamo dunque di non visitare l'arboretum e di intraprendere il sentiero Manoa Falls Trail. 

The second stop of the day is located in the middle of the south, not far from the Campus of the University of Hawaii that covers a surface of 121 hectares. We are at the Lyon Arboretum, one of the many botanical hawaiian natural-looking gardens which covers 80 hectares. The attempts to mix hibiscus, rhododendrons, ginger and calathea led to the creation of well 148 hybrid species (parking fee, $ 5). However we're fascinated by the trail (1.5 miles) that leads to Maloa waterfalls. So we decide not to visit the arboretum but to hike the Manoa Falls Trail.

Le Cascate Manoa sono alimentate da ben 508 centimetri di pioggia all'anno ed il sentiero si snoda all'interno di una foresta pluviale, concludendosi al laghetto dove si tuffano le cascate. 

The Manoa Falls are fed by 508 centimeters of rain every year and the trail winds through a rain forest, ending at the lake where you can admire the waterfalls.

In molti qui decidono di farsi un bel bagno, nonostante sia scoraggiato dal fatto che il rischio di ammalarsi di leptospirosi sia parecchio alto (la malattia causerebbe un'influenza della durata di 1-2 settimane). A ridosso del parcheggio troverete un mini visitor center ed un ristorante. All'interno di questa foresta pluviale sono state girate alcune scene di Lost e Jurassic Park.

Many people are having a bath even if swimming in the pool below the waterfall is highly discouraged because there is a threat of becoming infected with Leptospirosis. This disease causes mild to moderate flu-like symptoms that can last for up to 1 to 2 weeks. Behind the parking lot you will find a mini visitor center and a restaurant. Some scenes of Lost and Jurassic Park were filmed inside the forest.

Il nostro itinerario prevede che la seconda parte di giornata sia spesa nell'altro versante della parte sud dell'isola. E quale scenario migliore della "61" potremmo scegliere per attraversare l'isola? La strada State Highway 61 a cui facciamo riferimento è la stessa che molti escursionisti seguono mentre sono diretti al trail probabilmente più famoso al mondo, e tutt'ora vietato: il "Stairway to heaven". Questo trail è stupendo, ma nello stesso tempo incute anche molto timore. Noi decidiamo di non sfidare noi stessi e neppure la legge e ci fermiamo solamente al Nuunanu Pali Overlook (Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside), uno dei punti panoramici più belli dell'intera isola. Da questo punto s'intravedono la Kanehoe Bay e Kailua. Il vento qui è sempre fortissimo (parcheggio a pagamento). 

Our itinerary includes a trip to the other side of the south-coast. So, what's better then driving along the  "61" which cross the island? The State Highway 61 to which we refer is the same that many hikers follow while they are directed to the  most famous (and still access prohibited) trail in the world: the "Stairway to Heaven". This trail is amazing, but at the same time it also inspires much fear. We decide not to challenge ourselves and even the law and just stop at Nuunanu Pali Overlook (Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside), one of the most beautiful sights of the whole island. From this point it's possible to admire in the background the Kanehoe Bay and Kailua. The wind here is always very strong (parking fee, 3 dollars).

Approdati sulla costa è finalmente tempo di... mare. Alcune delle spiagge più belle di Ohau sono situate in questo angolo di paradiso, fatto di tranquillità e quartieri residenziali. Non abbiamo studiato benissimo le spiagge hawaiane, ma fortunatamente anche scegliendo sostanzialmente a caso tra quelle che avevamo segnato, saremo abbastanza fortunati. Lanikai Beach è stupenda e sicuramente consigliata a chiunque volesse un pizzico di mare caraibico che non sempre alle Hawaii è possibile trovare. Ricordandosi ovviamente che, trattandosi di oceano (con correnti sempre fortine), non è per il mare che si va alle Hawaii. Nonostante non siamo grandi amanti del mare e dell'ozio sulla spiaggia, questa volta non vorremmo davvero più abbandonare questo luogo incontaminato. Il mare, la sabbia finissima e, dietro di noi, le montagne verdissime e la foresta tropicale. 

Getting to the southeast side of the coast means... sea, beautiful sea. Some of the most amazing beaches of Oahu are located in this corner of paradise: tranquility and residential neighborhoods is what you'll find. We haven't studied Hawaiian beaches very well, but fortunately even if choosing randomly we've been lucky. Lanikai Beach is gorgeous and definitely recommended to anyone who wanted a bit of the Caribbean Sea that is not always easy to find in Hawaii. Remembering of course that this is the ocean (with strong currents): so you don't go to hawaii because of the sea, sea is just a small part of something bigger and more beautiful. Although we are not big lovers of sea and beaches, this time we  really don't want to leave this place. The sea, the fine sand and, behind us, the verdant mountains and the rainforest. What else?

Il programma di giornata ci spingerebbe verso il profondo sud dell'isola, ma il fascino di una spiaggia hawaiana come quella di Lanikai ci avvolge. Decidiamo di spendere qualche minuto in più qui e rinunciamo ad alcuni dei luoghi che avremmo incrociato lungo la Kalaniahole highway: ovvero alcune spiagge storiche come quelle di Waimanalo e Hanauma Bay, il faro di Makupu'u Point e Halona Blowhole, dove l'agitato mare del sud della costa, nei giorni di vento s'infrange sugli scogli creando una sorta di geyser. Per chi ama il buon cibo invece il ristorante Buzz's Steak House ha ospitato in passato sia Clinton che Obama. La giornata noi invece decidiamo di chiuderla non lontano da Diamond Head e da dove avevamo iniziato l'esplorazione dell'isola, al Kahala Mall, a sud di Honolulu, dove ieri avevamo acquistato la cena (da whole foods). Oggi scegliamo di fermarci e di tornare a distanza di tre anni da "Chili's", una catena di ristoranti molto famosa. Ce lo ricordavamo molto più buono (ed economico) di quanto in realtà sia...

The day's schedule would lead us to the deep south of the island, but the charm of this Hawaiian beach (Lanikai) surrounds us. We decide to spend a few more minutes here and skip some of the places that we would have visited along the Kalaniahole highway: some beaches like those of Waimanalo and Hanauma Bay, the Makupu'u Point lighthouse and Halona Blowhole, where the rough sea of southern coast shattered on the cliffs creating a sort of geyser. On windy days when the tide is high, the ocean breeze sends the waves rolling on to the shore where the rock formation then shoots sea spray high into the air through the cave acting like a geyser. It is not always at its best every day though. For those who love good food Buzz's Steak House restaurant has hosted in the past both Clinton and Obama. Anyway we prefer to end the day close to Diamond Head at the Kahala Mall, south of Honolulu, where the day before we had bought dinner (at whole foods). Today we choose to come back to "Chili's" three years later the first time: Chili's is a very famous restaurant chain. It isn't as good (and cheap) as we remembered...
