10- LIGHTS OF LIBERTY SHOW
Una delle esperienze più affascinanti è assistere al "Lights of Liberty Show", giochi di luce e suoni legati alla Rivoluzione Americana. Al tramonto recatevi nel cuore di downtown, a ridosso dell'Independence National Historical Park, da aprile ad ottobre. Sulle facciate dei più importanti edifici storici troverete proiettate molti dei filmati e delle immagini della Rivoluzione e del periodo coloniale. Potrete inoltre ascoltare la storia delle 13 colonie, anche in italiano, grazie ad auricolari senza fili.
One of the most fascinating experiences is watching the "Lights of Liberty Show,", light and sounds associated with the American Revolution. At sunset, from april to october, head to the heart of downtown, close to the Independence National Historical Park. 8- ITALIAN MARKET
Sentite la nostalgia di casa? Recatevi allora nel profondo South Philly, dove la maggior parte degli immigrati si stabilirono all'inizio del 1900. L'Italian Market, che si estende per ben sei isolati sulla 9th street, è un classico mercato italiano, con prodotti gastronomici che in tutta la Pennsylvania sono decisamente apprezzati. 7- BETSY ROSS HOUSE, MOM OF THE AMERICAN FLAG
La Betsy Ross House è ubicata nella old town ed è diventata famosa per il fatto che proprio Betsy fu l'artefice della bandiera americana. Betsy Ross, sarta del presidente Washington, "combattè" a lungo con il primo presidente americano, per nulla disposto a rinunciare ad una stella a 6 punte su quella che sarebbe diventata la bandiera statunitense. Vinse lei e la bandiera che ancora oggi rappresenta gli Stati Uniti raccoglie stelle a cinque punte.
The Betsy Ross House, located in the Old Town is a landmark purported to be the site where the seamstress and flag-maker Betsy Ross (1752-1836) lived when she sewed the first American Flag. Betsy Ross, the seamstress of the President Washington, "fought" for a long time with the first American president, not willing to give up a 6-pointed star on the flag. She "won" and the flag which still today represents the US collects five-pointed stars.
6- LIBERTY BELL, INDEPENDENCE HALL & INDEPENDENCE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
L'Independence National Historical Park (ingresso gratuito) è un'area a forma di L situata a ovest del fiume Delaware che ospita i siti storici più famosi di Philadelphia all'interno del "Miglio più storico degli Stati Uniti". Il simbolo del parco è la Liberty Bell, la campana sicuramente più famosa al mondo, simbolo di libertà ed indipendenza. La campana, una volta posta in cima alla State House, faceva sentire i suoi rintocchi in occasione dei maggiori avvenimenti pubblici come quando venne letta per la prima volta davanti ai cittadini la Dichiarazione d'Indipendenza. L'ultima volta che si sono uditi i rintocchi della Campana è stato in occasione del compleanno di George Washington nel 1846. Non lontano dalla Liberty Bell sorge anche la Independence Hall, il luogo dove venne firmata la Dichiarazione d'Indipendenza. Le sue sale ospitarono il parlamento USA dal 1790 al 1800, quando Philadelphia era la capitale della nazione. La visita di quest'ultima è a pagamento.
The Independence National Historical Park (free admission) is a "L-shaped" area located west of the Delaware River. This is also home to the most famous historical sites in Philadelphia in the "most historic mile" of the United States." The symbol of the park is the Liberty Bell, surely the most famous bell in the world, symbol of freedom and independence. The bell, once located at the top of the State House, did hear its chimes at major public events such as when the Declaration of the Independence was read for the first time in front of the citizens. The last time people have heard the chimes of the bell was at George Washington's birthday, in 1846. Not far from the Liberty Bell you can also visit the Independence Hall, the place where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Its halls hosted the US Congress from 1790 to 1800, when Philadelphia was the nation's capital (entrance fee).
5- THE WORLD FAMOUS PHILLY CHEESE STEAK

Ma cos'è la Philly Cheese Steak, il panino inventato quasi un centinaio di anni fa dall'italo-americano Pat Olivieri e da subito diventato sinonimo della cucina di strada della città? Sebbene possa essere servito in diversi modi, l'originale Philly Cheese Steak non è altro che un panino con un cremoso formaggio (Cheez Wiz), carne di manzo e cipolla. E, come sempre quando ci si appresta ad assaggiare una specialità del luogo occorre andare dal migliore. Per noi è Sonny's famous steak (228 Market St)

4- PENN'S LANDING
Penn's Landing è il luogo più ad est della città di Philadelphia, raggiungibile comunque a piedi partendo sia dalla Old Town che dalla Historic Philadelphia. Siamo lungo il fiume Delaware, davanti a voi uno splendido panorama, con il Benjamin Fanklin Bridge sullo sfondo. E' un luogo di divertimento per famiglie, tra luci e giostre, tra piste di pattinaggio e marshmallow, tra beer garden e attività outdoor.La Philadelphia più vera la troverete qui in quella che probabilmente è l'area che più ci ha colpito.
The Delaware River Waterfront, just a short walk from Old City and Historic Philadelphia (with the Benjamin Franklin bridge in the background), hosts family-friendly attractions and events all year long. Penn's Landing serves as the site for several events. The main public space at Penn's Landing is The Great Plaza, a mostly concrete labyrinth During the summer months, Festival Pier at Spring Garden Street serves as a venue for outdoor concerts. It 's a fun place for families, including lights and rides, ice skating (in winter time) and marshmallow, beer garden and outdoor activities. This is the truest Philadelphia and probably the area that most impressed us.
3- ROCKY'S STATUE AND STAIRCASE
Ebbene si, la famosissima saga del pugile italo-americano Rocky Balboa non ha lasciato un segno solo nei nostri cuori. A Philadelphia, città in cui sono ambientati i film, uno dei must-see place è proprio la statua di Rocky. Fu direttamente Sylverster Stallone, scrittore e attore protagonista della saga, a commissionare la scultura poco dopo la conclusione del film Rocky 2: la statua fu posta in cima alla scalinata del Museum of Art di Philadelphia, la stessa che Rocky percorse di corsa dopo aver attraversato, sempre correndo, la città (una scena indimenticabile della pellicola: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq590g0UlAM ). Tuttavia, al termine delle registrazioni, gli intellettuali della città rimasero parecchio infastiditi dalla presenza della statua proprio fuori dal museo delle arti, di per sé una delle gemme di Philly, e la fecero spostare. attualmente è posizionata a lato del museo, impossibile comunque non scovarla considerata la lunga coda di turisti in attesa di una foto in posizione di vittoria. Turisti che poi ovviamente percorrono di corsa anche la scalinata.

Avete voglia di entrare a contatto con la cultura amish ma non siete disposti ad affrontare le 80 miglia che separano Lancaster e Philadelphia? Il Reading Terminal Market allora è il luogo che fa per voi, dal 1892 una delle predilette destinazioni degli abitanti di Philadelphia e dei suoi dintorni. Il mercato, ubicato sotto il Convention Center, ospita cibi provenienti da tutto il mondo ed in particolare quelli "a km 0" della comunità degli amish, che ogni mattina dalla Lancaster County giungono nella città dell'amore fraterno. Il market è aperto dal lunedi al sabato dalle ore 8 alle ore 18.

1- EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY
La prigione che... ha cambiato la storia delle prigioni. Quando si è a Philadelphia non si può davvero non visitare l'Eastern State Penitentiary, costruita nel 1820 e capace di accogliere i più importanti criminali americani, tra cui Al Capone e Willie Sutton. Tutti i criminali venivano tenuti in isolamento per far sì che riflettessero sul male commesso e potessero così riabilitarsi. Sulla falsariga dell'Eastern State Penitentiary furono costruite altre 300 prigioni in tutto il mondo, dall'Australia all'Europa e persino in Sud America. La visita del Penitenziario è consentita tutto l'anno ma, al contrario di quanto avevamo letto in internet, l'audio guida non è disponibile in italiano. Per i più avventurosi sono disponibili visite del penitenziario in orario serale, denominate "terror behind the walls". Corridoi gotici e stanze dismesse vi daranno la sensazione di essere in un film horror. Sfruttando, infatti, l'atmosfera della prigione, sono state create attrazioni decisamente paurose, che potrete sperimentare effettuando il tour. Prestate attenzione però perchè all'improvviso sbucheranno attori vestiti da detenuti e guardie per spaventarvi. Siete pronti?
The prison ... that changed the history of prisons.
