No, non stiamo tornando indietro, anche se è ciò che potrebbe sembrare dalla destinazione finale di giornata. Stiamo continuando la corsa verso "l'eldorado" della California attraversando in sostanza l'intero stato del Missouri in direzione Springfield, un'altra Springfield. Sul fatto di andare d'accordo con i complicati (rispetto agli standard europei ed in particolare italiani) orari americani ormai siamo abilissimi, quello che non sapevamo è che percorrere la route durante il week end sarebbe stato ancor più complicato rispetto ai giorni feriali. Già, perchè va aggiunta alla solita fatica per restare lungo la "historical route 66", il fatto che molti dei musei e attrazioni della strada madre sono chiusi o aprono ad orari del tutto particolari durante il sabato e la domenica. Come ad esempio il Museum of Transportation of Route 66 di Kirkwood, che la domenica apre... alle 11.
No, we're not going back, even if today the final destination is Springfield. That's another Springfield and we're continuing the race to California crossing essentially the entire state of Missouri. We know that you cannot be late in the evening if you want to have dinner, but at the time we traveled along the route 66 we didn't know that satudays and sundays on the "mother road" would have been more complicated. Why? Because many of the museums and attractions are closed or opens at a very special time on Saturdays and Sundays. Such as the Museum of Transportation of Route 66 in Kirkwood, which opens on Sunday ... at 11am.
Non ci sarebbe affatto dispiaciuto visitare tutti i mezzi che hanno reso grande la route nel corso dei suoi novant'anni di vita, tra vetture e locomotive. Tuttavia sono solo le 9 del mattino e non potendoci assolutamente permettere il lusso di aspettare due ore, ci dirigiamo direttamente verso le Meramec Cavern. Parliamo dell'attrazione principale del Missouri, sponsorizzata già diversi chilometri prima in tutte le salse, come se fosse il Grand Canyon. A Stanton smettiamo di seguire la route 66 e seguiamo le indicazioni per Sullivan (una decina di km) sino a raggiungere le caverne, famose anche per essere state il nascondiglio di Jesse James, uno dei più grandi fuorilegge della storia americana.
We really would like to visit all the historical means of transport of the mother road during all the ninety years, including cars and locomotives. Anyway, it's just 9 am and we can't wait for two hours. The only chance is to go directly to the Meramec Caverns. We are talking about the main attraction of Missouri, already advertised several kilometers before in many different ways. In Stanton we leave the historical route 66 and follow the directions to Sullivan (ten kilometers) until reaching the caves, also famous for being the hideout of Jesse James, one of the biggest outlaws in American history.
Avendone viste diverse in Europa (su tutte quelle di Postumia), preferiamo evitare la visita della Meramec Caverns (21 dollari), preferendole un giro in barca lungo il Meramec River (9 dollari). Il tour dura una mezz'oretta. Nulla di imperdibile.
We have visited several caves in Europe (the best one is Postojna, Slovenija), so we prefer to avoid the visit of Meramec Caverns ($ 21). So, let's take boat ride along the Meramec River ($ 9)! The tour lasts half an hour. Nothing special.
Le water tower, spesso altissime, sono per noi spesso dei gps. Ogni volta che ne intravediamo una significa che stiamo percorrendo la strada giusta.

Quella di Cuba ci segnala che stiamo per arrivare nei pressi di uno dei motel storici, il Wagon Wheel Motel, ma anche e soprattutto stiamo per incontrare la seconda sedia a dondolo più grande al mondo (tra Cuba e Fanning). Scopriamo che da poco è stata tinteggiata, ora è rossa. Ed è davvero grande, anzi grandissima. Troviamo chiuso il trading post e scopriremo poi su internet che proprio da agosto 2016 ha cessato l'attività.
The one in Cuba means that we are approaching one of the historical motels, the Wagon Wheel Motel, and especially encounter the second world largest (and former world largest) rock chair. We find out that it has been recentl painted, it is red now. And it is really huge, very huge.
Iniziano ad aumentare anche gli storici trading post, posizionati da oltre 200 anni lungo le rotte commerciali ed in modo particolare in luoghi di frontiera o scarsamente abitati per commerciare o barattare beni con le popolazioni native. A Rolla visitiamo il Mule Trading post. E acquistiamo, ovviamente, anche qualche cimelio della "mother road".
Even historical trading post, located since more than 200 years along the trade routes and especially in border areas or sparsely populated to trade or barter goods with the native populations, are a must while traveling along the route 66. In Rolla we stop at the Mule Trading Post. Every trade post has a lot of route 66 memorabilia. Be prepare to spend some money there!
A devils' elbow attraversiamo un ponte del 1920, il Devil's Elbow Bridge, mentre sotto di noi, lungo il fiume, gli abitanti della zona fanno il bagno o si avventurano con il Kayak. E' un'America lontana anni luce da quella a cui siamo abituati.
In Devil's Elbow we cross a bridge built in 1920, the Devil's Elbow Bridge. While below us, along the river, the inhabitants of the area are swimming or venturing with Kayak. This is an America miles away far from what we are used to.

Complicato invece risulta effettuare la deviazione verso nord che avevamo programmato, verso l'Ha Ha Tonka State Park, al cui interno sono presenti rovine di un castello del 1800. Puntiamo allora dritto verso Springfield e facciamo visita alla Gray-Campbell Farmstead, una delle case più vecchie della città, dove in sostanza si vive come si viveva un tempo. La Farmstead è situata all'interno di un grande parco (Nathanael Greene Park) dove potrete anche visitare (3 dollari) i sentieri del Mizumoto Stroll. L'intenzione sarebbe anche quella di fermarsi dal grande e famoso Bass Pro Shop Pro Outdoor World, uno dei negozi di caccia e pesca più importanti dello stato. Sappiamo che al suo interno sono vendute centinaia di varietà di salse barbeque. E' chiaramente "il nostro posto", ma ancora una volta non siamo fortunati. E' chiuso per lavori.
Springfield is not that far. Actually it's going to be complicated make a detour to the north and visit the Ha Ha Tonka State park, a beautiful park which contains ruins of a castle dated 1800. Going toward Springfield is the best option. We then stop at the Gray-Campbell Farmstead, one of the oldest houses in town. The Farmstead is located inside a park (Nathanael Greene Park) where you can also visit ($ 3) the paths of Mizumoto Stroll. We would also stop at the big and famous Bass Pro Shop Pro Outdoor World, one of the most important fishing and hunting shops in the state. We know that are sold hundreds of varieties of barbecue sauces in here. It 's clearly "our place", but again we are not lucky. I's closed for renovation.
A Springfield per la cena abbiamo due opzioni. O il primo e storico Steak'n Shake, la catena di ristoranti nata proprio lungo la route 66, oppure Famous Dave's per il suo famosissimo barbeque. Ovviamente vince il secondo. Andiamo in uno dei templi del bbq, vincitore di diversi premi.
In Springfield we have basically two options for dinner. The first and historic Steak'n Shake (the restaurant chain was born just down the route 66 here in town) or the Famous Dave's for his famous barbeque? Of course the second option won. We go to one of the temples of bbq, winner of several awards.
Camerieri e direttore del locale ci trattano come poche altre volte siamo stati trattati in un ristorante in giro per il mondo, ci regalano una delle loro famose salse (dopo avercele accuratamente fatte assaggiare una dopo l'altra) e ci scontano le birre del 50%. 25 dollari in due è la spesa della cena. Come fai a non amare gli americani?
Both waiters and manager treat us in a special way. They give us one of their famous sauces (and let us taste all of them) and apply a 50% discount on beers. The bill is 25$. This is why we love US...
NOTA - Negli stati attraversati dalla route 66 spesso noterete che la "mother road" proporrà diversi percorsi da poter seguire. Già, perchè il alcuni casi potrete davvero scegliere se continuare sul percorso "historical" o affrontare tratti addirittura antecedenti il 1920. E non solo. Sia le deviazioni, che le date relative al percorso che state per seguire, sono sempre ben segnalate.
NOTES - In the states crossed by the route 66 you will notice that often the "mother road" offers different paths that you can follow. Well, this happens because sometimes you can really choose to continue on the "historical" path or face paths even prior to 1920. Both the deviations and that the dates are always well marked. You have just to choose the one you prefer the most.
