Ci sono giornate che ti rimangono dentro, che ti cambiano il volto al viaggio e ti fanno innamorare dei luoghi che stai visitando. Succede a tutti i viaggiatori. E succede, crediamo, in ogni viaggio. La giornata che ha cambiato il nostro di viaggio e fatto capire cosa voglia dire davvero vivere la route 66 è proprio questa, la quarta tappa, che da Springfield (Missouri), ci porterà a Vinita (Oklahoma), attraversando per un breve tratto anche il Kansas. Forse è "colpa nostra", perchè abbiamo impiegato troppo (tre tappe), per entrare nello spirito della Route 66, o forse no, perchè dopo tre tappe appunto, tutto comincia a venire più facile. Le strade cominciamo a trovarle quasi sempre ed ogni stop cominciamo a viverlo diversamente. Non più con l'idea del "dai, che abbiamo ancora 200 chilometri da fare", ma assaporando ogni singolo istante. Perchè, come abbiamo detto, ogni angolo della route 66 ti strappa il cuore e va vissuto, non solo visto. Questo non sarà il solito racconto di sempre. Non sarà il solito post con "le cose da vedere sulla route 66".

We don't struggle aymore to find the route, we find almost every historical marker... well, we are finally getting our kicks on route 66. In the right way, not saying the usual "come on, there are still 200 miles left", but savoring every moment. Because, as we said, every corner of route 66 rips the heart and should be experienced, not just seen. This is not the common story of all time. This is not a post with the "things to see on route 66".

Il click è scattato in avvio di tappa e no, non per gli scoiattoli bianchi che si vedono ad Albino, in Missouri, ma quando abbiamo raggiunto Paris Springs e il primo stop. In fase di studio Marco aveva letto tantissimi racconti su un tale Gary Turner, storico proprietario della Gary's Gay Parita Sinclair Gas Station, considerato da tutti uno dei "padri della route 66". "Fermatevi, fategli domande. Lui vi racconterà della route con lo stesso amore con cui si parla di un figlio". E anche all'Ale, ascoltando l'entusiasmo con cui Marco parlava di questo signor Gary, sembrava ormai di conoscerlo.

Gary is the opposite of intimidating. He offers me a cold root beer from his outdoor fridge, all the while telling me how business works on Route 66 functions today—how everybody on the road looks out for everybody else. “If you treat people right and I hear about it, then I send more people your way. But if you serve crappy food and have unfair prices, well then,” he pauses for effect. “You just won’t last.” He names an establishment in Oklahoma that I must avoid at all costs. “Worst hamburger I ever had,” he shakes his head, then swears. Gary’s wife Lena walks over and sits down next to him. “You’ll see — it’s a family, all of us on Route 66. When you get to Santa Monica, you’ll miss it and want to come back.”

La giornata è ancora lunga, ma abbiamo già capito che non la dimenticheremo tanto in fretta. In mezzo alle campagne della città di Carthage incontriamo uno stranissimo villaggio, Red Oak II, un particolarissimo e bizzarro quartiere della città ancorato alla route 66 ed alla sua storia. E' abitato ed anche qui ogni singolo abitante è pronto a raccontare la sua storia.

In the midst of Carthage's campaigns a strange village appears in front of us: its name is Red Oak II, a very unusual and bizarre district of the city anchored to route 66 and its history. It's inhabited and even here every single person is ready to tell his story.
Ma sta piovendo e la route chiama. Dobbiamo ripartire alla volta del Kansas, che per un piccolissimo tratto a sud est è attraversato dalla strada madre. La meta è Galena ed in particolare "Cars on the route", conosciuto anche come "4 women on the route" poichè gestito un tempo da 4 donne.
Anyway it's raining and we have to leave. Our next destination is the great state of Kansas, which for is crossed by the mother road just for a very small stretch. We are heading to Galena and especially to "Cars on the route", also known as "4 women on the route". That's because it was once run by four women.
Inutile girarci intorno, qui il legame con il cartone animato disney pixar "Cars - Motori ruggenti" è evidente. Qui troverete sandwiches, snack, oggettistica legata alla route e poi lui... l'originale cricchetto! Sì, proprio lui. E' da qui che la disney ha preso l'ispirazione per creare il migliore amico di Saetta McQueen.
The connection with the disney pixas movie "cars" is very strong. There are several vehicles outside the building, including the mining boom truck that inspired the character "Tow Mater" in Radiator Springs from the movie Cars. He is Saetta McQueen's best friend. For trademark reasons, their boom truck "Tow Tater."
Anche Galena, come quasi tutte le città della route, sembra abbandonata dal mondo. Non è facile neppure orientarsi e perdiamo una quindicina di minuti buoni per capire quale strada prendere verso quella che dovrebbe essere la tappa successiva. Già, perchè i four corners (New Mexico, Texas, Colorado ed Arizona) non ci sono bastati, ora siamo alla caccia dei "3 corners". "No, dovete tornare indietro, a Galena, e seguire la South Main Street per una decina di chilometri. Troverete la riserva indiana con il Casinò e poco prima anche i three corners". Quello che noi chiamiamo "three corners" sono in realtà chiamati "three states", un luogo dove tre stati s'incontrano: parliamo del Missouri, del Kansas e dell'Oklahoma. Non è paragonabile ai "four", ma una deviazione la merita.
Not far from the bridge we find out the EislerBrothersOld Riverton, a historic store along the "mother road", where finally the nice owner gives us the right directions to the "three corners". Well, right. The four corners (New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Arizona) are not enough, now we are in the hunt of the "three corners". "No, you have to go back, in Galena, and follow the South Main Street for about ten kilometers. You will find the Indian reservation with the Casino and just before it also the three corners." What we call the "three corners" are actually called "three states", a place where three states meet: Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. To be honest it can't be comparable to the "four corners"

Just before the entrance, on the left, a dirt road leads to the monument. In Baxter Springs we indeed ecounter the Phillips gas station 66: it is the last contact with the state of Kansas.

Di fronte alla gas station c'è il Dairy king ice cream and burgers, nato sulle ceneri dell'ex gas station della Marathon. Entriamo per un gelato e scopriamo non solo che i prezzi sono in sostanza fermi a 30 anni fa (1 dollaro!), ma anche e soprattutto che il proprietario è già prontissimo per raccontarci i 90 anni di questo luogo.
The Dairy King ice cream and burgers, born on the ashes of the former Marathon gas station, is located just in front of the Conoco gas station. We go for an ice cream and we find out that not only prices are amazing ($ 1 for an ice-cream!) but even the owner is amazing. He is already very ready to tell about the 90 years of this place.
Da quando era una Gas Station "e Bonny uccise nel 1934 proprio qui un poliziotto prima di venire a sua volta uccisa con Clyde qualche settimana dopo", a quando "qualche giorno fa una coppia ha deciso di sposarsi proprio qui, davanti alla gas station".

"Sapete, non ho mai viaggiato. Ho visto il mare un anno fa per la prima volta, ma ogni giorno, in qualsiasi periodo dell'anno, vedo entrare viaggiatori da tutto il mondo. Parlo con loro, mi raccontano del loro paese. Non è come viaggiare tutto questo"?. Lo è.

Eccoci finalmente a Vinita, la prima piccola cittadina dove abbiamo scelto di fare tappa. Siamo alla ricerca del nostro motel, il super 8, ma nulla... non riusciamo a trovarlo. Il gps ci manda in un punto, fuori dalla città, dove ci sono solo campi. Un'ora abbondante ed una quarantina di chilometri dopo finalmente lo troviamo. Il paese non è Vinita, ma Big Cabin. Siamo ancora elettrizzati per la giornata che abbiamo vissuto e la conclusione non può che essere con la specialità di quest'area dell'Oklahoma, la bistecca di manzo impanata. E come sempre andiamo dal migliore, Clanton's diner, il più antico ristorante a conduzione familiare della route 66...
Here we are, finally Vinita, the first small town where we stop for the night. We are looking for our motel, super 8, but we can't find it. The gps sends us outside the city, where there are only fields. After one hour we finally find it: the town is Big Cabin, not Vinita! Now it's just time to end the day in best way as possibile. We choose the best diner in town, Clanton's diner, the oldest family-run business of route 66. The specialty is the calf fried.

The Dairy King ice cream and burgers, born on the ashes of the former Marathon gas station, is located just in front of the Conoco gas station. We go for an ice cream and we find out that not only prices are amazing ($ 1 for an ice-cream!) but even the owner is amazing. He is already very ready to tell about the 90 years of this place.
Since it was a Marathon Gas Station "and Bonny killed right here a policeman - he says - before being killed by few weeks later with Clyde. It was 1934", till a few days ago, when "a couple decided to get married right here, in front of the gas station" .
Signing the guest book we find out that many travelers has come here today: people from Norway, French, Great Britain...

"Sapete, non ho mai viaggiato. Ho visto il mare un anno fa per la prima volta, ma ogni giorno, in qualsiasi periodo dell'anno, vedo entrare viaggiatori da tutto il mondo. Attraversiamo anche Miami, che se della Miami della Florida ha soltanto il nome, dall'altra offre un tratto di route 66 addirittura antecedente al 1920.
We also pass through Miami. No, this city has nothing of the "famous" Miami, Florida, but offers a stretch of the route 66 even prior to 1920.
Eccoci finalmente a Vinita, la prima piccola cittadina dove abbiamo scelto di fare tappa. Siamo alla ricerca del nostro motel, il super 8, ma nulla... non riusciamo a trovarlo. Il gps ci manda in un punto, fuori dalla città, dove ci sono solo campi. Un'ora abbondante ed una quarantina di chilometri dopo finalmente lo troviamo. Il paese non è Vinita, ma Big Cabin. Siamo ancora elettrizzati per la giornata che abbiamo vissuto e la conclusione non può che essere con la specialità di quest'area dell'Oklahoma, la bistecca di manzo impanata. E come sempre andiamo dal migliore, Clanton's diner, il più antico ristorante a conduzione familiare della route 66...
Here we are, finally Vinita, the first small town where we stop for the night. We are looking for our motel, super 8, but we can't find it. The gps sends us outside the city, where there are only fields. After one hour we finally find it: the town is Big Cabin, not Vinita! Now it's just time to end the day in best way as possibile. We choose the best diner in town, Clanton's diner, the oldest family-run business of route 66. The specialty is the calf fried.

Webb City, Missouri - King Jack Park (una statua di grandi mani che pregano)
Picher, Oklahoma - E' una deviazione verso nord che vi porterà nella ghost town di Picher. La Chernobyl americana. Dal 2006 il governo americano ha "invitato" tutti gli abitanti rimasti ad andarsene: lo hanno fatto tutti tranne il signor Linderman, l'ultimo baluardo, che ha mantenuto aperta la farmacia (old miners farmacy). E' morto nel 2015, non aveva neppure 50 anni. Le miniere di piombo e zinco l'hanno resa talmente tossica da portare alla morte prematura gran parte degli abitanti. La peculiarità è che una delle strade principali che collegano l'Oklahoma con il Kansas (la 69, S Connell Avenue) attraversa la città. Se doveste visitarla o semplicemente attraversarla, fatelo con il finestrino chiuso.

The peculiarity is that one of the main roads linking Oklahoma with Kansas (S Connell Avenue) runs through the city. If you were to visit or simply cross it, do it with tthe window closed.
