The 1000 km out of the way along the center/western lane of Texas had one major final goal, the visit of the most remote national park, the Big Bend National Park, located in the Big Bend territories near the border with Mexico. One wants to say that this is an old-time park and place, a land of outlaws that hid here when wanted by the Texas Rangers, but also and above land of frontier.

Qui non è il muro a dividere gli Stati Uniti ed il Messico, come accade invece in California, in Arizona, in New Mexico e nella parte più occidentale del Texas, ma il ben più temuto Rio Grande (il Rio Bravo per i messicani). Troppo impervio il territorio e troppo insidioso il Rio Grande per spingere i "latinos" a tentare con l'aiuto dei famosi "coyotes", di varcare il confine. E troppo pericolosa l'area a nord del Messico (governata dai cartelli della droga) per tentare di avvicinarsi al confine, come ha splendidamente raccontato Flaviano Bianchini nel libro Migrantes, nel quale lo scrittore italiano si finge un migrante e percorre migliaia di km sulla "bestia", il treno merci che a qualcuno riesce a regalare... il sogno americano.
In this place, it is not the wall that divides United States and Mexico, as it happens in California, Arizona, New Mexico and in the westernmost part of Texas, but the most feared Rio Grande (Rio Bravo for the Mexicans). In a few lines we basically told what it's like to go that far and reach the Big Bend area. The scenic road, which leads to the Big Bend National, Park is the number "118". It's just you and the road especially if you wake up just before sunrise time (like us) with a view to get to the park at a very reasonable hour. There is no sign of civilization for almost 150 km, those that separate Alpine, the last pillars of civilization, with Terlingua, the ghost town that serves as gate town to Big Bend National Park. Only mountains. Desert mountains.

TERLINGUA, THE ULTIMATE BORDER TOWN
You will realize that the Big Bend National Park is not so far apart when some strange welcome signs welcome you to the town of Terlingua, once one of the most important border towns of the American west.
Here nothing is wrapped up in a bow to attract tourists, the city is still really anchored to the frontier days and along its dusty roads in the early morning there is the feeling that an outlaw may sneak out at any moment. Also because the doors of the historical Terlingua Jail are ... open!
Diciamolo pure, probabilmente il segreto meglio conservato dell'intera area del Big Bend è proprio Terlingua, immersa tra le splendide catene montuose del Chisos e del Mule Ears, e dove nei pomeriggi limpidi si possono intravedere anche le prime montagne messicane (Santa Fe e Los Pinos), distanti non più di 80 miglia.
Let's face it, probably the best kept secret of the whole Big Bend area is Terlingua, which is sorrounded by the splendid Chisos and Mule Ears mountains. Last but not least: on a clear afternoons you can even glimpse the first Mexican mountains (Santa Fe and Los Pinos), which are no more than 80 miles away.
Terlingua fu una città mineraria che ebbe il suo momento di massimo splendore sul finire del 1800 grazie anche alla Chisos Mining Company (fallita nel 1943), ma vanta anche l'incredibile primato di esser stata la location nel quale si è svolto il primo contest "Chili cook championship", tenutosi nel 1967. Ancora oggi oltre 10mila persone la visitano il primo sabato di novembre quando si svolge il contest. Se voleste assaggiare un buon chili, sapete dunque dove andare...
Terlingua has been a mining town that had its height towards the end of 1800 thanks to the Chisos Mining Company (failed in 1943), but also boasts the incredible record of being the location where the first contest " Chili cook championship " took place (1967). On the first Saturday of November, over 10,000 "chiliheads" convene in Terlingua for two annual chili cookoffs.
Adesso Terlingua altro non è che una ghost town, anche se alcuni degli storici edifici sono ancora ben conservati. Come ad esempio lo Starlight Theatre, situato nella polverosa e minuscola downtown. Con le sue rovine, il cimitero, le auto abbandonate, a Terlingua si respira il clima delle città minerarie di frontiera. Nel Terlingua Trading Company, situato proprio di fianco allo Starlight Theatre (che ora è un ristorante), troverete manufatti, souvenir e tutto ciò che abbia a che fare con la più incredibile città di frontiera.
Nowadays Terlingua is nothing but a ghost town, although some of the historic buildings are still well preserved. Such as the Starlight Theater, located in the dusty and tiny downtown. With its ruins, the cemetery, abandoned cars, Terlingua lets you breathe the air of the old frontier mining towns. You will also find artifacts, souvenirs and everything that has to do with the most incredible border town at the Terlingua Trading Company, located right next to the Starlight Theater, which is now a restaurant.

No, non abbiamo saputo resistere. Prima di varcare i "cancelli" del Big Bend National Park, una volta superata Terlingua abbiamo proseguito lungo la "170" per una decina di miglia sino alla minuscola cittadina di Lajitas, situata proprio lungo il confine messicano. No, non era nostra intenzione visitare uno dei più bei campi da golf degli Usa (considerata soprattutto la posizione) del Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa, bensì salutare il sindaco più curioso della storia americana. E non solo.

E le curiosità non sono finite qui. Clay Henry, il sindaco di Lajitas, è ghiotissimo di gatorade, mentre il primo tra i suoi predecessori (morto nel 1992) ed il suo stesso figlio adoravano la birra. Il primo Clay Henry è imbalsamato ed esposto nello Starlight Theatre Saloon nella vicina Terlingua.

La "170", ovvero una delle strade panoramiche più belle non solo del Texas, ma degli interi Stati Uniti, segue l'andamento del fiume Rio Grande e vi condurrà sino al Big Bend Ranch State Park, il fratellino del più famoso Big Bend National Park. Il nome della scenic byway è "El Camino del Rio" proprio perchè costeggia il fiume per 79 km. Dopo soli 7.5 km troverete il “Contrabando Movie set”, un set cinematografico abbandonato. Esteticamente non dirà nulla, ma una sosta se di passaggio potrebbe risultare interessante. Se non altro per ammirare i luoghi dove alcuni importanti film sono stati ambientati: "Dead Man's Walk" e "Streets of Laredo".

Non a caso il Big Bend National Park è stato definito "Il parco giochi del diavolo" per via delle temperature estive.

COME VISITARE IL BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Visitare il Big Bend National Park è molto semplice. Il Parco è strutturato in tre macro regioni: le Chisos Mountains sono situate nel cuore del parco, la zona centrale. E' qui che troverete anche l'unico alloggio del parco (il Chisos Mountain Lodge), l'unico ristorante e uno dei due luoghi dove è possibile campeggiare. Ad est ad accompagnarvi sarà il deserto, che vi porterà sino al confine con il Messico, che potrete superare solo in orari e giorni prestabiliti. Troverete tutte le informazioni nel Rio Grande Village Visitor Center, situato non lontano dalla seconda area camping del parco e dal Border Patrol. Ad ovest infine troverete le Mesas e le particolarissime formazioni rocciose del Big Bend National Park. E' l'area più remota del parco. Sostanzialmente c'è tutto il Texas in un solo parco nazionale. Ci sono tre uffici informazioni nel parco. Il Chisos Basin Visitor Center si trova nella zona principale, vicino al Chisos Mountain lodge, il Panther Junction Visitor Center si trova proprio all'inizio del parco provenendo dalla "385", il Rio Grande Valley Visitor Center si trova infine sul lato est, vicino alla dogana. Il Rio Grande Village è aperto solamente in alta stagione (novembre - aprile)

The Chisos Basin Visitor Center is located in the main area, close to the lodge, the Panther Junction Visitor Center is located at the very beginning of the park coming from the "385", the Rio Grande Valley Visitor Center is located in the east side of the park, close to the Port of Entry. COSA VEDERE NEL BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
A differenza di altri National Park, non ci sono moltissimi view point lungo la Gand Springs, la strada principale del parco. Per avventurarsi tra le bellezze del Big Bend bisogna seguire la Maxwell Scenic Drive, una strada panoramica che conduce alla sezione ovest del parco, sicuramente la più scenografica. Di cose da fare e da vedere in questa particolare area del parco ce ne sono diverse. Non mancate il Soto Vista Overlook poi, successivamente, anche il Mule Ears view Point e soprattutto, Castolon. Con il suo Harmonia Store, è un toccasana per una sosta. Quest’area del parco è sicuramente una delle più significative per quello che riguarda gli insediamenti. Abitata fin dagli inizi del 1900 da contadini che qui avevano edificato le loro fattorie, divenne base per i militari che difendevano la zona dai fuggiaschi messicani. Lo store vendeva cibo, vestiti, equipaggiamento. Fungeva anche da ufficio dello sceriffo. Il National Park Service ha acquistato La Harmonia nel 1961 e ora offre snacks, souvenir e bevande. Castolon e l'Harmonia Store sono aperti solamente in alta stagione, da novembre ad aprile
WHAT TO SEE IN THE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Unlike other National Parks, there are not many view points along the Gand Springs, the park's main road. In order to explore the beauties of the Big Bend, follow the Maxwell Scenic Drive, a scenic road that leads to the west section of the park, certainly the most scenic. There are several things to do and see in this particular area of the park. Do not miss the Soto Vista Overlook, shortly after the Mule Ears view Point and above all, Castolon. With its Harmonia Store, it is a panacea for a break. This area of the park is certainly one of the most significant as regards settlements. This area has been occupied since the early 1900s by peasants who built their farms right here: it then became a base for the military who defended the area from Mexican fugitives. The store sold food, clothes, equipment. It also served as the sheriff's office. The National Park Service bought La Harmonia in 1961 and now offers snacks, souvenirs and drinks. Castolon store is open november through april.
IL SANTA HELENA CANYON
Ma se vi state avventurando nella sezione ovest del parco vorrete percorrere la Maxwell Scenic Drive interamente. Farlo significa raggiungere il Santa Helena Canyon Overlook, dal quale potrete godere di una prima significativa vista sul canyon che si spalanca davanti a voi. Qualche centinaia di metri dopo un ampio parcheggio segnala che la drive s'interrompe qui. Lasciate la vostra vettura ed avventuratevi lungo il Santa Helena Canyon Trail, il più bel percorso che il Big Bend National Park possa offrire.
THE SANTA HELENA CANYON
If you are venturing into the west section of the park you will want to drive the entire Maxwell Scenic Drive. That means reaching the Santa Helena Canyon Overlook, from which you can enjoy a first significant view of the canyon located in front of you. A few hundred meters later, a large parking lot means that the road ends here. Leave your car and venture along the Santa Helena Canyon Trail, the most beautiful trail that Big Bend National Park can offer.
Il trail di 2.5 km comincia proprio a ridosso del canyon, dove scorre il Rio Grande. Dall'altra parte c'è il Messico. E' uno dei percorsi più spettacolari, in virtù della stupenda vista sul fiume e sulle formazioni rocciose.
Santa Elena Canyon Trail is a 1.3 mile moderately trafficked round trip trail which starts at the very beginning of the canyon, where the Rio Grande runs. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. It is one of the most spectacular hikes, thanks to the wonderful views
E’ considerato un trail facile, ma sappiate che ci sarà da attraversare un torrente che confluisce nel Rio Grande (che a seconda della stagione può essere attraversabile oppure no) ed inerpicarsi sui gradini scavati nella parete del canyon.
It's good for all skill levels, but you'll have to cross a stream that flows into the Rio Grande (it can be crossed or not, depending on the water level and season) and climb the steps carved into the canyon wall.
Effettuando il trail d'estate, ovviamente, il livello dell'acqua non sarà un problema (a meno di occasionali flash flood, da tenere sempre in considerazione), ma non dimenticatevi delle alte temperature. E' consigliato percorrere il trail nelle prime ore del mattino o nel tardo pomeriggio.
If you hike the trail in the summer, of course, the water level will not be a problem (except for occasional flash flood, to keep always in mind), but do not forget about the high temperatures. It is recommended to hike the trail in the early morning or late afternoon.
Percorrendo il trail prima salirete quasi in cima al canyon e poi scenderete fino al fiume, immersi tra due pareti enormi che assomigliano moltissimo ai narrows di Zion. Il fatto, poi, che dall'altra parte del Rio Grande ci sia il Messico non fa altro che rendere ancora più magico il bellissimo trail.
Following the trail you will first climb almost to the top of the canyon and then descend to the river, surrounded by two huge walls that look like the Zion's narrows. Mexico is right on the other side of the Rio Grande and that's make this trail even more magical.
L'EAST SIDE DEL PARCO - VIVA MEXICO! COME ATTRAVERSARE IL CONFINE
Il view point Rio Grande Lookout (con relativo breve ed evitabile trail di 0.3 km) sancisce l'approdo nella zona east del parco. I due trail principali dell'area sono il Boquillas Canyon Trail e l'Hot Springs Trail. Il Boquillas Canyon Trail non è particolarmente lungo, 1,5 miglia tra andata e ritorno. Tuttavia dovrete "scollinare", quindi può essere impegnativo con il caldo, soprattutto al ritorno. Il trail conduce ancora una volta al Rio Grande. L'Hot Springs Trail è invece il trail di 1.2 km che conduce alle hot springs, la cui temperatura è di 40 gradi. Il percorso comincia a ridosso del visitor center. Ma se come noi doveste aver già camminato lungo il Santa Helena Canyon Trail ora avrete in mente soltanto una cosa, ovvero attraversare il confine ed approdare in Messico. Dovrete essere molto fortunati per poterlo fare. E noi lo siamo stati, visto che solo un cambiamento dei giorni in cui è possibile attraversare il confine ha fatto si che potessimo vivere questa avventura.
THE EAST SIDE OF THE PARK - VIVA MEXICO! HOW TO CROSS THE BORDER
The Rio Grande Lookout view point (with its short and avoidable 0.3 km trail) confirms that we're entering the east side of the park. The two main trails of the area are the Boquillas Canyon Trail and the Hot Springs Trail. The Boquillas Canyon Trail is not very long, just 1.5 miles round trip. However you will have to climb, so it can be strenous with the heat, especially when you come back. The trail leads once again to the Rio Grande. The Hot Springs Trail is a 1.2 km trail that leads to the hot spring, whose temperature is 40 degrees (celsius). The hike starts near the visitor center. Anyway, if you've already hiked the Santa Helena Canyon Trail just like us, there's only one thing your mind right now: cross the border and get to Mexico. We've been very lucky: we chose the right day to cross the border. During summer it's open from friday to monday, and today it's... monday!
BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN, TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE
Ad oggi, settembre 2018, questi sono i giorni e gli orari in cui è possibile superare il confine ed approdare in Messico dal Big Bend National Park. Il Port of Entry è aperto durante l'estate dal venerdì al lunedì (dalle 9 del mattino alle 6 di sera), durante l'inverno invece dal mercoledì alla domenica (dalle 8 del mattino alle 5 del pomeriggio). Troverete il Port of Entry svoltando a sinistra su una strada sterrata prima di arrivare al Visitor Center. L'ufficiale militare vi spiegherà alcune regole basilari e da quel momento entrerete in Messico. O meglio vi affaccerete sul Rio Grande. Avrete a disposizione due modi per attraversarlo: a piedi (a vostro rischio e pericolo), oppure sulla barca (costo 5 dollari) messa a disposizione dai messicani dall'altra sponda del fiume. Una volta attraversato il Rio Grande, che ora dovrete cominciare a chiamare... Rio Bravo, sarà nuovamente il momento delle scelte.
BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN, EVERYTHING THAT THERE IS TO KNOW
To this day, September 2018, these are the days and times when it is possible to cross the border and get to Mexico from the Big Bend National Park. In summer the Port of Entry is open from Friday to Monday (from 9 am to 6 pm), during the winter is open from Wednesday to Sunday (from 8 am to 5 pm). You will find the Port of Entry turning left onto a dirt road before arriving at the Visitor Center. The military officer will explain some basic rules and then.... it's Mexico. Or better yet, you will look out on the Rio Grande. there are two ways to cross it: by walk (at your own risk), or by boat (5 dollars per person) made available by the Mexicans on the other side of the river. Once you cross the Rio Grande, which should be called ... Rio Bravo now, it's time of "big" choices again.

Noi abbiamo scelto la più economica delle opzioni (5 dollari contro 8), ma allo stesso tempo la più affascinante, ovvero il mulo. Burro in spagnolo. Nel lungo (sotto il sole delle ore 13 di fine luglio) chilometro e mezzo che ci separava da Boquillas del Carmen abbiamo scelto anche i loro nomi: taco e burrito.
We chose the cheapest options (5 dollars against 8), but at the same time probably the most fascinating one: ride a mule. Burro in Spanish. At 1 pm, in the end of july, it can be a very long kilometer... so we had enough time to chose their name: taco and burrito.
In teoria, una volta approdati a Boquillas del Carmen, dovrete far dogana, ma il militare è a pranzo in uno dei due ristoranti. Fa un cenno con la mano in segno di riconoscimento e lo raggiungiamo in uno dei due ristoranti, il Jose Falcon's Restaurant (l'altro è il Boquillas Restaurant). Ci saluta e non ci chiede alcun documento, ma ci garantisce che qui avremmo trovato una fantastica guacamole. Diciamo pure la migliore di sempre.

La storia di Boquillas del Carmen è stata decisamente travagliata. Sino al 2002 era sostanzialmente piena di turisti che, come noi, volevano attraversare il confine in tutta tranquillità, ma dopo i tragici eventi del settembre 2001 tutto è cambiato. Il Border è stato chiuso e Boquillas è diventata una sorta di ghost town.
The story of Boquillas del Carmen has been decidedly troubled. Until 2002 it was essentially full of tourists who, like us, wanted to cross the border in peace: everything changed after the tragic events of September 2001. The Border was closed and Boquillas has become a sort of ghost town.
Solo nel 2013, quando ha riaperto, la piccola cittadina messicana è tornata alla vita. Al ritorno, prima di uscire dal Border Crossing, dovrete affrontare la parte più difficile dell'escursione, quasi come se fosse un trail. L'ufficiale vi inviterà a prendere la cornetta ed avvicinarla all'orecchio. Dall'altra parte della linea c'è un altro ufficiale che vi chiederà di mostrare il passaporto davanti alla telecamera e vi farà moltissime domande. In 2013 the Border reopened and the small Mexican town came back to life. When you come back, just before leaving the Border Crossing, you will have to face the most difficult part of the excursion. The officer will invite you to take the phone and bring it closer to your ear. On the other side of the line there is another officer who asks you to show the passport in front of the camera and asks many other questions. Those are not the very simple ones you are used to when you land in your favourite American airport. We did not expect it and it was quite traumatic but, after all, also very funny. LA ZONA CENTRALE - LE CHISOS MOUNTAIN
Si sale vertiginosamente per raggiungere l'unica area dove l'uomo ha potuto insediarsi nel Big Bend National Park. E' l'area centrale del parco, situata in altura, in un contesto naturale con pochi eguali. Il trail, bellissimo, che non dovrete mancare se avrete più di un giorno da spendere nel parco è il Lost Mine Trail (7.7 km), che vi porta davvero nel cuore delle Chisos Mountain.
THE CENTRAL AREA - THE CHISOS MOUNTAINS
The road rises vertiginously till reaching the only area where the mankind was able to settle in Big Bend National Park. It is the central area of the park, located on the middle of the Chisos Mountains, in a natural setting with few equals. The beautiful trail that you should not miss if you can spend more than a day in the park is the Lost Mine Trail (7.7 km), which really takes you into the heart of the Chisos Mountain.
Se invece di tempo ne avrete poco non perdetevi, a ridosso del Chisos Mountain Lodge e del visitor center, il Window View Trail, una passeggiata di 0.5 km su un sentiero pavimentato. Il percorso offre un bel panorama sulla "window", ovvero quell'apertura tra le montagne da cui ammirare un panorama mozzafiato. Soprattutto al tramonto. Ah, lo sapevate che il Big Bend è il miglior luogo del Nord America per ammirare le stelle? IL territorio del Big Bend, infatti, è quello che risente meno dell’inquinamento visivo. Il cielo stellato è così vivido che stenterete a credere ai vostri occhi. If you're staying just one night, don't miss the Window View Trail, a 0.5 km paved trail located just next to the visitor center. The trail offers a beautiful view on the "window", that opening in the mountains which gives breathtaking views. Especially at sunset. Well, did you know that Big Bend is the best place in North America to admire the stars? The territory of Big Bend, in fact, is the one that is less affected by visual pollution. The starry sky is so vivid that you will hardly believe your eyes. And even if no pictures can ever do justice to this park, we assure you that you will never want to leave that magical place called Big Bend National Park. We know what you're wondering: the answer is "yes". The very long detour was certainly worthwhile!
A differenza di altri National Park, non ci sono moltissimi view point lungo la Gand Springs, la strada principale del parco. Per avventurarsi tra le bellezze del Big Bend bisogna seguire la Maxwell Scenic Drive, una strada panoramica che conduce alla sezione ovest del parco, sicuramente la più scenografica. Di cose da fare e da vedere in questa particolare area del parco ce ne sono diverse. Non mancate il Soto Vista Overlook poi, successivamente, anche il Mule Ears view Point e soprattutto, Castolon. Con il suo Harmonia Store, è un toccasana per una sosta. Quest’area del parco è sicuramente una delle più significative per quello che riguarda gli insediamenti. Abitata fin dagli inizi del 1900 da contadini che qui avevano edificato le loro fattorie, divenne base per i militari che difendevano la zona dai fuggiaschi messicani. Lo store vendeva cibo, vestiti, equipaggiamento. Fungeva anche da ufficio dello sceriffo. Il National Park Service ha acquistato La Harmonia nel 1961 e ora offre snacks, souvenir e bevande. Castolon e l'Harmonia Store sono aperti solamente in alta stagione, da novembre ad aprile
WHAT TO SEE IN THE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Unlike other National Parks, there are not many view points along the Gand Springs, the park's main road. In order to explore the beauties of the Big Bend, follow the Maxwell Scenic Drive, a scenic road that leads to the west section of the park, certainly the most scenic. There are several things to do and see in this particular area of the park. Do not miss the Soto Vista Overlook, shortly after the Mule Ears view Point and above all, Castolon. With its Harmonia Store, it is a panacea for a break. This area of the park is certainly one of the most significant as regards settlements. This area has been occupied since the early 1900s by peasants who built their farms right here: it then became a base for the military who defended the area from Mexican fugitives. The store sold food, clothes, equipment. It also served as the sheriff's office. The National Park Service bought La Harmonia in 1961 and now offers snacks, souvenirs and drinks. Castolon store is open november through april.

IL SANTA HELENA CANYON
Ma se vi state avventurando nella sezione ovest del parco vorrete percorrere la Maxwell Scenic Drive interamente. Farlo significa raggiungere il Santa Helena Canyon Overlook, dal quale potrete godere di una prima significativa vista sul canyon che si spalanca davanti a voi. Qualche centinaia di metri dopo un ampio parcheggio segnala che la drive s'interrompe qui. Lasciate la vostra vettura ed avventuratevi lungo il Santa Helena Canyon Trail, il più bel percorso che il Big Bend National Park possa offrire.
THE SANTA HELENA CANYON
If you are venturing into the west section of the park you will want to drive the entire Maxwell Scenic Drive. That means reaching the Santa Helena Canyon Overlook, from which you can enjoy a first significant view of the canyon located in front of you. A few hundred meters later, a large parking lot means that the road ends here. Leave your car and venture along the Santa Helena Canyon Trail, the most beautiful trail that Big Bend National Park can offer.

Il trail di 2.5 km comincia proprio a ridosso del canyon, dove scorre il Rio Grande. Dall'altra parte c'è il Messico. E' uno dei percorsi più spettacolari, in virtù della stupenda vista sul fiume e sulle formazioni rocciose.
Santa Elena Canyon Trail is a 1.3 mile moderately trafficked round trip trail which starts at the very beginning of the canyon, where the Rio Grande runs. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. It is one of the most spectacular hikes, thanks to the wonderful views
E’ considerato un trail facile, ma sappiate che ci sarà da attraversare un torrente che confluisce nel Rio Grande (che a seconda della stagione può essere attraversabile oppure no) ed inerpicarsi sui gradini scavati nella parete del canyon.
It's good for all skill levels, but you'll have to cross a stream that flows into the Rio Grande (it can be crossed or not, depending on the water level and season) and climb the steps carved into the canyon wall.

If you hike the trail in the summer, of course, the water level will not be a problem (except for occasional flash flood, to keep always in mind), but do not forget about the high temperatures. It is recommended to hike the trail in the early morning or late afternoon.

Percorrendo il trail prima salirete quasi in cima al canyon e poi scenderete fino al fiume, immersi tra due pareti enormi che assomigliano moltissimo ai narrows di Zion. Il fatto, poi, che dall'altra parte del Rio Grande ci sia il Messico non fa altro che rendere ancora più magico il bellissimo trail.
Following the trail you will first climb almost to the top of the canyon and then descend to the river, surrounded by two huge walls that look like the Zion's narrows. Mexico is right on the other side of the Rio Grande and that's make this trail even more magical.

L'EAST SIDE DEL PARCO - VIVA MEXICO! COME ATTRAVERSARE IL CONFINE
Il view point Rio Grande Lookout (con relativo breve ed evitabile trail di 0.3 km) sancisce l'approdo nella zona east del parco. I due trail principali dell'area sono il Boquillas Canyon Trail e l'Hot Springs Trail. Il Boquillas Canyon Trail non è particolarmente lungo, 1,5 miglia tra andata e ritorno. Tuttavia dovrete "scollinare", quindi può essere impegnativo con il caldo, soprattutto al ritorno. Il trail conduce ancora una volta al Rio Grande. L'Hot Springs Trail è invece il trail di 1.2 km che conduce alle hot springs, la cui temperatura è di 40 gradi. Il percorso comincia a ridosso del visitor center. Ma se come noi doveste aver già camminato lungo il Santa Helena Canyon Trail ora avrete in mente soltanto una cosa, ovvero attraversare il confine ed approdare in Messico. Dovrete essere molto fortunati per poterlo fare. E noi lo siamo stati, visto che solo un cambiamento dei giorni in cui è possibile attraversare il confine ha fatto si che potessimo vivere questa avventura.
THE EAST SIDE OF THE PARK - VIVA MEXICO! HOW TO CROSS THE BORDER
The Rio Grande Lookout view point (with its short and avoidable 0.3 km trail) confirms that we're entering the east side of the park. The two main trails of the area are the Boquillas Canyon Trail and the Hot Springs Trail. The Boquillas Canyon Trail is not very long, just 1.5 miles round trip. However you will have to climb, so it can be strenous with the heat, especially when you come back. The trail leads once again to the Rio Grande. The Hot Springs Trail is a 1.2 km trail that leads to the hot spring, whose temperature is 40 degrees (celsius). The hike starts near the visitor center. Anyway, if you've already hiked the Santa Helena Canyon Trail just like us, there's only one thing your mind right now: cross the border and get to Mexico. We've been very lucky: we chose the right day to cross the border. During summer it's open from friday to monday, and today it's... monday!
BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN, TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE
Ad oggi, settembre 2018, questi sono i giorni e gli orari in cui è possibile superare il confine ed approdare in Messico dal Big Bend National Park. Il Port of Entry è aperto durante l'estate dal venerdì al lunedì (dalle 9 del mattino alle 6 di sera), durante l'inverno invece dal mercoledì alla domenica (dalle 8 del mattino alle 5 del pomeriggio). Troverete il Port of Entry svoltando a sinistra su una strada sterrata prima di arrivare al Visitor Center. L'ufficiale militare vi spiegherà alcune regole basilari e da quel momento entrerete in Messico. O meglio vi affaccerete sul Rio Grande. Avrete a disposizione due modi per attraversarlo: a piedi (a vostro rischio e pericolo), oppure sulla barca (costo 5 dollari) messa a disposizione dai messicani dall'altra sponda del fiume. Una volta attraversato il Rio Grande, che ora dovrete cominciare a chiamare... Rio Bravo, sarà nuovamente il momento delle scelte.
BOQUILLAS DEL CARMEN, EVERYTHING THAT THERE IS TO KNOW
To this day, September 2018, these are the days and times when it is possible to cross the border and get to Mexico from the Big Bend National Park. In summer the Port of Entry is open from Friday to Monday (from 9 am to 6 pm), during the winter is open from Wednesday to Sunday (from 8 am to 5 pm). You will find the Port of Entry turning left onto a dirt road before arriving at the Visitor Center. The military officer will explain some basic rules and then.... it's Mexico. Or better yet, you will look out on the Rio Grande. there are two ways to cross it: by walk (at your own risk), or by boat (5 dollars per person) made available by the Mexicans on the other side of the river. Once you cross the Rio Grande, which should be called ... Rio Bravo now, it's time of "big" choices again.

Only 1.5 km separate the port of entry from the first Mexican town, Boquillas del Carmen, but if you do not want to walk, there are three more options: a horseback ride, a mule ride, or a van ride.
Noi abbiamo scelto la più economica delle opzioni (5 dollari contro 8), ma allo stesso tempo la più affascinante, ovvero il mulo. Burro in spagnolo. Nel lungo (sotto il sole delle ore 13 di fine luglio) chilometro e mezzo che ci separava da Boquillas del Carmen abbiamo scelto anche i loro nomi: taco e burrito.
We chose the cheapest options (5 dollars against 8), but at the same time probably the most fascinating one: ride a mule. Burro in Spanish. At 1 pm, in the end of july, it can be a very long kilometer... so we had enough time to chose their name: taco and burrito.

Fa un cenno con la mano in segno di riconoscimento e lo raggiungiamo in uno dei due ristoranti, il Jose Falcon's Restaurant (l'altro è il Boquillas Restaurant). Ci saluta e non ci chiede alcun documento, ma ci garantisce che qui avremmo trovato una fantastica guacamole. Diciamo pure la migliore di sempre.
