Quando si parla di Colorado e di montagne, il pensiero non può non andare alle Rocky Mountains, la catena delle Montagne Rocciose che si estendono per quasi 3000 miglia dalla British Columbia e dall'Alberta, in Canada, sino a raggiungere il New Mexico, negli Stati Uniti. Ed è proprio il nord ovest del Colorado uno dei tratti più affascinanti delle "Rockies", fatto di ben tre foreste (Roosevelt National Forest a nord-est, Routt National Forest a nord-ovest e Arapaho National Forest a sud-ovest), fiumi, laghi, una strada panoramica mozzafiato (la Trail Ridge Road) lunga 48 miglia e che raggiunge i 3.700 metri di altitudine (la più alta dello stato) ed ovviamente uno dei parchi nazionali più amati dagli americani, il Rocky Mountain National Park.

When it comes to Colorado and mountains, you can't help thinking about the Rocky Mountains, the mountain range that extends for nearly 3,000 miles from British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, to New Mexico, Usa. And it is precisely the north west of Colorado that is one of the most fascinating stretches of the "Rockies", made up of three National Forests (Roosevelt National Forest to the northeast, Routt National Forest to the north-west and Arapaho National Forest to the south-west), rivers, lakes, a breathtaking scenic byway (the Trail Ridge Road) that is 48 miles long and reaches a maximum elevation of 12,183 feet (highest in Colorado) and of course one of the most loved National Parks by Americans, the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Se esiste un paradiso per gli amanti della montagna negli Stati Uniti, non si va tanto lontano dal Rocky Mountain National Park. E' qui che sorge la Longs Peak, una cima alta addirittura 4346 metri, è qui che ci sono addirittura ben 578 km di sentieri per il trekking e qualcosa come 700 km di corsi d'acqua. Tra cui ovviamente il fiume Colorado. Numeri che mettono i brividi e che ogni anno richiamano milioni di turisti, il vero (e unico) grande problema del parco. In estate, infatti, è impensabile non solo godere della solitudine lungo i principali trail, ma spesso e volentieri anche l'accesso con la propria auto ai parcheggi dell'area di Bear Lake, l'area più famosa del parco.

If there is a paradise for mountain lovers in the United States, its name is definitely the Rocky Mountain National Park. It is one of the highest national parks in the nation, with elevations from 7,860 to 14,259 feet (2,396 to 4,346 m), the highest point of which is Longs Peak, this is where there are even 578 km of hiking trails and something like 700 km of waterways. E noi, che proprio dei migliori trail del Rocky Mountain National Park vogliamo parlare, ci siamo trovati in grande difficoltà nell'accedere ai percorsi che avevamo programmato di seguire, nonostante avessimo lasciato Estes Park alle 8 del mattino. Il primo e fondamentale consiglio che diamo è, dunque, quello di accedere alla zona di BEAR LAKE alle prime luci dell'alba durante il periodo estivo, oppure affidatevi alle navette messe a disposizione dal parco.

Our mission is to talk about the best trails in the Rocky Mountain National Park, but the truth is that we could not get to trails we planned to hike, even though we had left Estes Park at 8 am. The first and fundamental advice we give you is, therefore, to access the area of BEAR LAKE at dawn during the summer, or rely on the shuttles provided by the park.

CUB LAKE TRAIL LOOP, IL SEGRETO MEGLIO CUSTODITO DELLE "ROCKIES"

Questa volta non possiamo fare una classifica dei migliori trail del Rocky Mountain National Park, ma di una cosa siamo sicuri. Il segreto meglio custodito di un'area in cui è difficile trovare pace e solitudine come quella di Bear Lake, è senza dubbio Il Cub Lake Trail Loop, che è poi il trail che abbiamo scelto di percorrere e di raccontarvi minuziosamente. Dove siamo? A sud della Trail Ridge Road, nell'area di Bear Lake che, come abbiamo più volte, è la zona più affollata del parco, sia perché è facilmente raggiungibile da Estes Park sia perché è l’unica a rimanere aperta per tutto l’anno. CUB LAKE TRAIL LOOP, THE "ROCKIES" BEST KEPT SECRET

This time we cannot rank the best trails in Rocky Mountain National Park, but we are sure of one thing. The best kept secret of an area where it is difficult to find peace and solitude like that of Bear Lake, is undoubtedly the Cub Lake Trail Loop, which is then the trail that we decided to hike and to tell you about minutely. Where are we? South of Trail Ridge Road, in the area of ​​Bear Lake which, as we have repeatedly, is the most crowded area of ​​the park, both because it is easily accessible from Estes Park and also because it is the only one one that remains open all year round. Finding a parking space here is not difficult, but if you would like to get the free shuttle, take the Moraine Park Route (green) which stops at the Cub Lake Trailhead. The parking area of ​​the Cub Lake Trailhead is not very large: if it's full, leave your car in the second parking lot located 0.3 miles further back in the Fern Lake Bus Stop parking area and walk the loop trail clockwise. Just like we did.

Il Cub Lake Trail Loop (6 miglia, loop trail) non solo è una validissima alternativa agli "one way", ma permette in sole sei miglia di ammirare buona parte delle bellezze delle montagne rocciose, dal Windy Gulch Cascades al Big Thompson River, passando per The Pool ed ovviamente Cub Lake. E' possibile percorrere il trail sia in senso orario che antiorario, nel caso in cui scegliate come abbiamo fatto noi di effettuare l'hike in senso orario, troverete Cub Lake dopo circa 4 delle 6 miglia percorse.

CUB LAKE TRAIL LOOP - TRAIL'S DETAILS

The Cub Lake Trail Loop (6 miles, loop trail) is not only a valid alternative to the one way, but it allows you to admire most of the beauties of the rocky mountains in just six miles, from the Windy Gulch Cascades to the the Big Thompson River, from The Pool to the Cub Lake. It is possible to hike the trail both clockwise and counterclockwise, in case you hike clockwise like us, you will get to Cub Lake after about 4 miles.

Se state percorrendo il trail in senso antiorario, il primo miglio segue una strada sterrata sino all'ingresso del Fern Lake Trail. La prima attrazione è il Windy Gulch Cascades, quasi nascosto in una gola sopra la valle. In questa prima parte di percorso il Big Thompson River vi ha fatto compagnia e vi abbandonerà solamente dopo aver superato la passerella che scorre sopra di esso.

If you are hiking the trail counterclockwise, the first mile follows a dirt road to the entrance to the Fern Lake Trail. The first attraction is the Windy Gulch Cascades, almost hidden in a gorge above the valley. In this first part of the journey, the Big Thompson River is keeping you company.

La svolta a sinistra (a destra si prosegue prosegue verso Fern Lake), dopo il ponte, vi porterà a salire attraversando l'area di "The Pool" sino a raggiungere Cub Lake, un bellissimo lago ricoperto di ninfee. E' il tratto più impegnativo del percorso, ma anche il più affascinante. Subito dopo lo svincolo con l'Hollowell Park Trail (una deviazione che vi allontanerà dal vostro percorso), proseguite verso est costeggiando Cub Lake per poi scendere a valle, dove ad attendervi ci saranno altri piccoli laghetti e, se siete fortunati, anche qualche alce.

After crossing the bridge at The Pool, the trail splits. The right-hand trail makes its way up to Fern Falls and Fern Lake. The left-hand trail leads to the lake–this left-hand trail is the correct trail for completing the loop. This 1.2 mile segment from the Pool to Cub Lake is the most demanding part of the hike. Immediately after the junction with the Hollowell Park Trail (a detour that will take you away from your route), continue east along the beautiful Cub Lake and then descend to the valley, where other small lakes will be waiting for you and, if you're lucky, even some moose .

GLI ALTRI TRAIL DELLA BEAR LAKE AREA

La zona di Bear Lake è particolarmente ricca di sentieri adatti anche ai meno esperti. Il più gettonato è sicuramente lo Sky Pond Trail (dislivello: 60 metri), un percorso di 4.5 miglia sola andata che permette di ammirare le principali bellezze che circondano il lago Bear, tra cui le Alberta Falls, Loch Lake ed il gioiellino finale, il Pond Lake. Meritano una particolare menzione le Alberta Falls, che vi troverete di fronte dopo circa un km, una cascata di 30 metri che scorre lungo una piccola gola sul Glacier Creek e prende il nome da Alberta Sprague, la moglie di Abner Sprague, uno dei coloni originari nell'area di Estes Park. La grande bellezza del trail è tuttavia a metà strada, quando noterete sulla vostra sinistra Loch Vale, quello che tutti conoscono come "The Loch", un bellissimo lago subalpino, situato all'interno di uno dei bacini idrografici più studiati al mondo. Per oltre venti anni gli scienziati hanno monitorato gli input chimici al fine di distinguere tra impatti umani e processi naturali che si verificano in questo ambiente. La parte finale, altrettanto bella, conduce al Sky Pond ed al Glass Lake, entrambi stupendi. La parte finale è anche la più difficile dell'intero percorso. Per chi è invece alla ricerca di qualcosa di meno impegnativo ma comunque affascinante, consigliamo l'Emerald Lake Trail (3.5 miglia, dislivello 60 metri), considerato il più bel trail tra quelli di categoria "easy". Il trail parte a ridosso del Bear Lake Loop Trail, un trail di 0.8 miglia che segue i contorni del Bear Lake, e conduce direttamente al lago Emerald. Percorrere questo trail al mattino potrebbe darvi la possibilità di scattare splendide foto di Hallett Peak che si riflette sull'acqua.

THE OTHER BEAR LAKE AREA'S TRAILS

The area of ​​Bear Lake is particularly rich in trails suitable even for the less experienced. The most popular is certainly the Sky Pond Trail (elevation gain: 60 meters), a 4.5 mile one way trail that features the main beauties surrounding Bear Lake, including the Alberta Falls, Loch Lake and the final jewel, the Pond Lake. Worth mentioning are the Alberta Falls, which are located just after 1 mile: a 30-meter waterfall that runs along a small gorge on Glacier Creek and is named after Alberta Sprague, Abner Sprague's wife, one of the original settlers in the Estes Park area. The great beauty of the trail, however, is halfway: you'll notice on your left the Loch Vale, what everyone knows as "The Loch", a beautiful subalpine lake, located within one of the most studied river basins in the world. For over twenty years scientists have monitored chemical inputs in order to distinguish between human impacts and natural processes that occur in this environment. The final part, equally beautiful, leads to the Sky Pond and the Glass Lake, both beautiful. The final part is also the most difficult of the entire trail. For those looking for something less demanding but still fascinating, we recommend the Emerald Lake Trail (3.5 miles, elevation gain: 60 meters), considered the most beautiful trail among the easy trails. The trail starts near the Bear Lake Loop Trail, a 0.8 mile trail that follows the contours of Bear Lake, and leads directly to Emerald Lake. GLI STOP LUNGO LA TRAIL RIDGE ROAD

I 77 km della Trail Ridge Road sono l'unico modo di attraversare il parco da est a ovest o viceversa. Capace di raggiungere i 3700 metri di altitudine, questa strada panoramica offre degli scorci fenomenali sulle montagne circostanti e, in alcuni tratti, non è esattamente adatta ai deboli di cuore. THE STOPS ALONG THE TRAIL RIDGE ROAD

      Driving along the 77 km of the Trail Ridge Road is the one and only way to cross the park from east to west or viceversa. The Trail Ridge Road is the highest paved through road in Colorado and it is also the highest paved road in Colorado that crosses the continental divide (Cottonwood Pass at 12,126 feet is the second highest, and Colorado State Highway 82 at 12,095 feet going through Independence Pass is the third highest. It offers phenomenal views of the surrounding mountains and, in some places, is not exactly suitable for the faint of heart. Here are all the stops not to be missed, starting from the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center, located close to the town of Estes Park (east side of the park).

- FOREST CANYON OVERLOOK Questo piccolo trail di 0.3 miglia ad oltre 3000 metri permette di avere una vista sulla valle sottostante, che crea una sorta di "U". Il Continental Divide, la spina dorsale che separa gli spartiacque dell'Atlantico e del Pacifico, è sospeso su tutta la valle. Le sue vette più alte includono il Monte Ida, la Terra Tomah Mountain e la Sprague Mountain, mentre l'iconica Longs Peak di 14.259 piedi si trova a sud.

Its highest peaks include Mount Ida, Terra Tomah Mountain and Sprague Mountain, while the iconic 14,259-foot Longs Peak lies to the south.

      - GORE RANGE OVERLOOK The Gore Range Overlook (3600 meters) offers spectacular views of the entire Gorge Range, the Never Summer Mountains and other peaks (among the highest) in the park. The Gore Range Overlook is the highest point on the Trail Ridge Road: the name comes from Mr. George Gore, an Irish aristocrat who left for a hunting expedition in these areas in 1854

- ALPINE VISITOR CENTER Il visitor center situato nel cuore del parco è raggiungibile sia attraverso la Trail Ridge Road, sia attraverso la sterrata Old Fall River Road che per 9 miglia sostituisce la strada principale e vi riporta, di fatto, indietro nel tempo. Essa fu, infatti, la prima strada automobilistica ad attraversare il parco (1920). Lungo la Old Fall River Road puoi seguire gli stessi sentieri che percorsero i nativi americani e i coloni per attraversare il Continental Divide. 

- MEDICINE BOW CURVE Situato subito dopo aver superato l'Alpine Visitor Center, questo scenografico tornante offre splendide vedute sulla catena montuosa Medicine Bow, che noi oggi conosciamo come Never Summer Mountains.

- ALPINE VISITOR CENTER The visitor center located in the heart of the park can be reached either through the Trail Ridge Road, or through the dirt road called Old Fall River Road, which for 9 miles replaces the main road and takes you back in time. It was, in fact, the first road to cross the park (1920). Along the Old Fall River Road you can follow the same paths that Native Americans and settlers used to travel in order to cross the Continental Divide.

- MEDICINE BOW CURVE Located just after passing the Alpine Visitor Center, this scenic switchback offers stunning views of the Medicine Bow mountain range, which we now know as the Never Summer Mountains.

- ADAM FALLS TRAIL Una volta raggiunta l'estremità occidentale del parco e quindi la cittadina dalla tipica atmosfera western di Grand Lake, percorrete il brevissimo sentiero (0.5 km) che conduce alle Adams Falls. Un'avventura ancor più lunga (altre 8 miglia) ma decisamente più eccitante vi consentirà di raggiungere ben quattro laghi: Lone Pine Lake, Lake Verna, Spirit Lake e Fourth Lake.

E, se non vi fossero bastati sia i view point che i trail, il Rocky Mountain National Park, offre altri sentieri escursionistici adatti a chi potrà spendere almeno un paio di giorni all'interno del parco. Tra questi segnaliamo il Deer Ridge Junction Trailhead (http://www.protrails.com/trail/96/rocky-mountain-national-park-deer-mountain), un anello di 6,1 miglia (9,8 km), situato non lontano dall'entrata est del parco. Sempre nell'area di Estes Park, molto battuto è il Lumpy Ridge Trailhead (11 miglia) mentre chi ama la pace dei laghi alpini non può perdersi il trail verso Crystal Lake (7,7 miglia - solo andata) e verso l'Ypsilon Lake, 4,5 miglia solo andata. 

- ADAM FALLS TRAIL Once you reach the western end of the park and then the small town (with the typical western atmosphere) of Grand Lake, follow the very short trail (0.5 km) that leads to the Adams Falls. An even longer adventure (another 8 miles) but definitely more exciting will allow you to reach four lakes: Lone Pine Lake, Lake Verna, Spirit Lake and Fourth Lake.

THE OTHER TRAILS OF THE PARK

And, if that wasn't enough, the Rocky Mountain National Park offers other hiking trails suitable for those who can spend at least a couple of days inside the park. These include the Deer Ridge Junction Trailhead (http://www.protrails.com/trail/96/rocky-mountain-national-park-deer-mountain), a 6.1 miles (9.8 km) loop trail located not far from the east entrance of the park. Also in the Estes Park area, the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead (11 miles) is very popular, while those who love the peace of the alpine lakes cannot miss the trail to Crystal Lake (7.7 miles - one way) and to the Ypsilon Lak , 4.5 miles one way.

Solitamente, chi visita il Rocky Mountain National Park si dirige verso ovest, verso le rocce rosse dello Utah ed in particolare dell'area, splendida, che circonda Moab. Troppo spesso i tempi sono stretti e l'ovest del Colorado diventa, purtroppo, solamente una lunga tappa di passaggio lungo la "I70", oltre 300 miglia di... occasioni mancate. Già, perchè tra le aree più sottovalutate dell'ovest americano c'è proprio l'ovest del Colorado, fatto di cittadine splendide come Georgetown, località rinomate come Vail ed Aspen, sorgenti termali e parchi divertimento come quelli di Glenwood Springs e poi tanta, tantissima natura, con Hanging Lake ed uno dei National Monument più belli degli interi Usa, Il Colorado National Monument.

Too often time is short and the west of Colorado becomes, unfortunately, only an intermediate stage along the "I70", over 300 miles of ... missed opportunities. Yes, because among the most undervalued areas of the American west, there is just the west of Colorado, made up of splendid towns like Georgetown, famous places like Vail and Aspen, thermal springs and amusement parks like those of Glenwood Springs and then lots and lots of nature, with Hanging Lake and one of the most beautiful National Monument of the entire USA, the Colorado National Monument.

Ci eravamo lasciati a Winter Park, alle porte del Rocky Mountain National Park, un'oretta a nord della "I70" che taglia l'ovest del Colorado in due e conduce in Utah. Prima di raggiungerla, ai piedi del Berthoud Pass, potrete fare una breve tappa ad Empire, il cui nome la dice davvero lunga. Questa piccola cittadina era, infatti, ai tempi delle miniere d'argento e d'oro il fulcro dell'intero distretto minerario del Colorado. Ora è una meta rinomata per gli amanti dello snowboard, che si ritrovano per un caffè alla mitica Redman Hall ed al Colorado Country General Store & Souvenirs (6 Park East Ave, Empire), un bellissimo general store dove sono esposti tantissimi oggetti legati al Colorado.

We had left each other in Winter Park, at the gates of the Rocky Mountain National Park, an hour north of the "I70" that cuts the west of Colorado in two and leads to Utah. GEORGETOWN, UNA CITTADINA FIABESCA

Ma la cittadina che non vorrete perdere, una tra le 15 più belle secondo noi tra le "meno famose" negli Stati Uniti, è Georgetown, lungo la I70. Fu proprio Georgetown a far “morire” Empire, attraendo sin dalla metà del 1800 coloro che avevano immediatamente intravisto le potenzialità di questa cittadina fiabesca. Al tempo fu la magia dell'oro e dell'argento, ora è la bellezza e l'atmosfera di questa pittoresca cittadina circondata dalle montagne rocciose.

GEORGETOWN, A FAIRYTALE TOWN

Very well, but the town that you won't want to miss, one of the 15 most beautiful among the "less famous" cities in the United States, is definitely Georgetown, located along the I70. It was Georgetown who made Empire "die", attracting those who immediately glimpsed the potential of this fairy-tale town since the mid-1800s. At the time it was the magic of gold and silver, now it's the beauty and the atmosphere of this picturesque town surrounded by the rocky mountains.

Tra le tante cose che si possono fare A Georgetown c'è la visita di una miniera, la Capital Prize Gold Mine Tours, la salita a  bordo di un treno panoramico (Georgetown Loop Railroad, di 5 km) o ancora ammirare lo storico Hotel de Paris, che durante il boom dell'oro e dell'argento fungeva da ristorante francese di altissimo livello, showroom per venditori ambulanti e hotel di lusso.

Mentre Silverthorne è la città dello shopping, grazie al Outlets at Silverthorne (246 V Rainbow Dr, Silverthorne) e degli Ice Castle, bellissimi slot canyon fatti completamente di ghiaccio visitabili durante il periodo invernale, Vail è invece una famosa località sciistica dove si svolge anche la Coppa del Mondo di sci alpino. Discorso diverso invece per Glenwood Springs, città nella quale non mancano le attrattive: grandi e piccoli, escursionisti e persone che cercano il relax... tutti avranno di che sbizzarrirsi. Il gioiellino, ormai neanche più troppo nascosto, è il bellissimo Hanging Lake, la più bella tra le escursioni ad ovest delle montagne rocciose.

The gem, which is no longer hidden, is the beautiful Hanging Lake: its trail is the most beautiful west of the rocky mountains.

COME VISITARE HANGING LAKE

Prima di raccontare nel dettaglio le bellezze del lago, occorre partire dall'inizio. Come si raggiunge Hanging Lake? Gli ingressi ad Hanging Lake sono diventati, da poco tempo, contingentati. Ciò significa che non è più possibile raggiungere con la propria auto il parcheggio del trail, situato all'uscita 125 della I70 (provenendo da ovest), ma occorre raggiungere il parcheggio situato nel cuore di Glenwood Springs, al 110 di Wulfsohn Road. Qui, uno shuttle messo a disposizione dal Forest Service, vi condurrà con un viaggio di una ventina di minuti all'inizio del sentiero. HOW TO VISIT HANGING LAKE

Before telling in detail the beauties of the lake, it is necessary to start at the beginning. How to get to Hanging Lake? Access to Hanging Lake is limited. This means that it is no longer possible to reach the trailhead parking lot located at exit 125 of the I70 (coming from the west) with your own car: you need to get to another parking lot which is located in the heart of Glenwood Springs, at 110 Wulfsohn Road. Here, a shuttle provided by the Forest Service will take you in 20 minutes to the beginning of the trail. GUIDE TO THE HANGING LAKE TRAIL

Named National Natural Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior in 2011, Hanging Lake has been for many years the best kept secret in the Glenwood Springs area. However, its popularity has literally exploded in the last ten years, enough to oblige the Forest Service to restrict access to protect this natural wonder which receives over 131,000 visitors per year.

Il sentiero, roccioso, di 2 km (dislivello di 300 metri, da non sottovalutare durante l'andata) costeggia prima il fiume Colorado e poi un ruscello: sarete costantemente accompagnati dal rilassante mormorio dell'acqua. La salita verso Hanging Lake è faticosa ma assolutamente affrontabile in circa un'ora da parte anche di persone non particolarmente allenate. Troverete, in ogni caso, ogni 1/4 di miglio, panchine sulle quali sostare.

The rocky and steep 1.2 miles trail trail (elevation gain: 300 meters) shouldn't be underestimated, especially during the outward. It runs along the Colorado river and then a stream: you will be constantly accompanied by the relaxing murmur of the water. The climb to Hanging Lake is tiring but also absolutely affordable by people that are not particularly fit in about an hour. Anyway, you will find benches every 1/4 of a mile.

Una volta raggiunta la fine del sentiero ad attendervi ci sarà il maestoso Hanging Lake che, con le sue acque caraibiche, le splendide cascate e la sua posizione sulla scogliera, sembra uscito direttamente da un libro delle favole. In questo caso possiamo proprio dire che la fatica verrà ripagata.

Once you get to the end of the trail, you'll see the majestic Hanging Lake which, with its Caribbean waters, the splendid waterfalls and its position on the cliff, seems to come straight out of a storybook. In this case we can really say that it worth the effort!

Insieme a voi non ci saranno più di 10-15 persone, il che renderà ancor più suggestivo uno scenario davvero con pochissimi eguali. E non preoccupatevi se vorrete spendere più tempo al lago e non farete in tempo ad essere a valle per l'orario stabilito. Potrete prendere la navetta successiva, a patto ovviamente che ci sia posto.

Se c'è un luogo imperdibile, soprattutto se viaggiate con bambini al seguito, è proprio il Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, addirittura in principio commercializzato come l'ottava meraviglia del mondo dall'ufficio marketing del parco. Esagerato, ovviamente, ma questa è una di quelle attrazioni che non andrebbero perse quando si visita Glenwood Springs.

Se non fosse per le sue acque davvero calde (circa 40 gradi), parleremmo di terme tra le più belle in assoluto. Con i suoi altopiani rocciosi ed i canyon ripidissimi, il Colorado National Monument è indubbiamente il più bello tra i gioiellini naturali spesso snobbati dello stato del Colorado. No, non stiamo esagerando. Il bellissimo National Monument situato alle porte della città di Grand Junction, soprannominato “Tour of the Moon” dai ciclisti che hanno attraversato il suo circuito ondulato durante l’edizione 1983 della Coors Classic, non ha nulla da invidiare ai ben più famosi canyons delle vicine Arizona e Utah, ed è uno dei pochi parchi nazionali che non necessitano di particolari escursioni a piedi per goderne appieno il suo panorama.

With its rocky plateaus and steep canyons, the Colorado National Monument is undoubtedly the most beautiful among the often disregarded natural jewels of the state of Colorado. No, we're not exaggerating. The beautiful National Monument located at the gates of the city of Grand Junction, nicknamed "Tour of the Moon" by cyclists who crossed its undulating circuit during the 1983 edition of the Coors Classic, has nothing to envy to the much more famous canyons of the neighboring Arizona and Utah, and it is one of the few national parks that do not require particular demanding hikes to fully enjoy its panorama.

Merito della Historic Rim Rock Drive, una strada panoramica tra le più belle dell'ovest americano, di quelle che "ti vien voglia di fermarti ad ogni piazzola di sosta per scattare una fotografia". Le sue 23 miglia, fatte di dolci ed ondulate curve, furono fortemente volute nel 1930 dal Conservation Corp, un lavoro che seguì il già splendido compito svolto dal padre del Colorado National Monument, il signor John Otto, che dal 1907 e per più di 20 anni costruì miglia e miglia di sentieri che permisero ai visitatori di godere di uno spettacolo con pochissimi eguali non solo in Colorado, ma in tutto l'ovest. The credit for that is all of the Historic Rim Rock Drive, one of the most beautiful scenic roads in the American west, which "makes you want to stop at each lay-by to take a picture". Its 23 miles, made of gentle and undulating curves, were strongly desired in the 1930s by the Conservation Corp, a work that followed the already splendid task performed by the father of the Colorado National Monument, Mr. John Otto, since 1907 (and for more than 20 years). Ma ciò che rende unico il parco è che potrete godere della quasi totale solitudine sia nei view point che durante i trail. Un qualcosa di impensabile nei grandi parchi di Arizona e Utah.

In fact, the park is made of four canyons: from the inhospitable, and accessible only thanks to long trails or unpaved roads, No Thoroughfare Canyon to the most visible Red Canyon, Canyon Ute and Monument Canyon, the latter being the longest and richest in rock formations. But what makes the Colorado National Monument very unique is that you can enjoy an almost complete solitude, both in the view points and along the trails. Something unthinkable in the great parks of Arizona and Utah.

La Historic Rim Rock Drive collega le due estremità del parco, ovvero il versante a sud ovest di Grand Junction e quello a nord ovest della città. Se state provenendo da est (dal centro del Colorado), come è successo a noi, sarà la Monument Road la strada che dovrete seguire e che vi porterà direttamente all'entrata del parco. Al contrario. se state provenendo da Moab, seguite la Broadway sino alla deviazione verso la Rim Rock Drive. Partendo dal versante est del parco, ecco i  migliori 10 view point del Colorado National Monument:

HOW TO VISIT THE COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT

The Historic Rim Rock Drive connects the two ends of the park: the south-western slope of Grand Junction and the northwest of the city. If you are coming from the east (from the middle of the state of Colorado) just like us, you'll have to follow the Monument Road to get to the park. In reverse. if you are coming from Moab, follow the Broadway till the detour to the Rim Rock Drive. Starting from the east side of the park, here are the top 10 view points of the Colorado National Monument:

1) Cold Shivers point Overlook
E' il primo view point del parco, ma anche uno dei più spettacolari tra i panorami che può offrire il Colorado National Monument. Il view point posto sopra lo stretto Columbus Canyon si trova sul bordo di una scogliera di arenaria Wingate alta più di 300 piedi.

2) Red Canyon Overlook
Uno dei più suggestivi tra i view point, capace di regalare viste sul Red Canyon. Il belvedere, recintato da un muro di pietra, vi regala un'autentica lezione di geologia sull'erosione e sul clima. Gran parte dell'erosione qui avviene in inverno quando l'acqua si congela e si scioglie in fessure e crepe.

1) Cold Shivers point Overlook
It is the first viewpoint of the park, but also one of the most spectacular of the Colorado National Monument. The view point above the Columbus Canyon is on the edge of a 300-foot-high Wingate sandstone cliff.

2) Red Canyon Overlook
One of the most suggestive among all the view points: here you can admire the Red Canyon. The belvedere, enclosed by a stone wall, gives you an authentic geology lesson on erosion and climate. Much of the erosion occurs here in winter when the water freezes and melts into cracks and crevices.

3) Ute Canyon View
Ancora una scogliera a strapiombo e ancora una splendida vista sul lato orientale del Colorado National Monument. Una brevissima passeggiata (0.1 miglia) attraverso un bosco di ginepro conduce alla scogliera, alta 300 piedi. L'Ute Canyon Trail, un percorso di sette miglia, inizia sul lato opposto e segue il fondo del canyon verso nord.

4) Upper Ute Canyon View

4) Upper Ute Canyon View
The view point, located west of the Ute Canyon, allows you to admire, among others, Fallen Rock.

5) Artist Point
Di solito, quando nei parchi americani si parla di Artist Point View Point, vuol dire che si è di fronte ad uno dei più affascinanti punti di osservazione. E' così anche questa volta: guglie e pinnacoli che sembrano disegnati da artisti, caratterizzano il Monument Canyon e sono visitabili dai due punti panoramici dell'Artist Point View Point.

6) Coke Ovens Overlook
Le Coke Ovens sono formazioni rocciose del tutto particolari, a forma di cupola.

5) Artist Point
Usually, when we talk about Artist Point in the American National Parks, it means that we are facing one of the most fascinating observation points. Even then, the view is breathtaking: spiers and pinnacles that seem to be designed by artists, characterize the Monument Canyon and can be visited from the two panoramic points of the Artist Point View Point.

6) Coke Ovens Overlook
The Coke Ovens are very special dome-shaped rock formations.

7) Grand view Overlook
Se dovessimo dire quale sia la miglior vista possibile, tra le 10 che abbiamo citato, probabilmente sceglieremmo Grand View Overlook. Una interminabile vallata che fa letteralmente sognare!

Independence Monument è un monumento roccioso che emerge nella vallata.

Una passeggiata di 100 metri vi porta ad ammirare il Fruita Canyon, il più vicino all'ingresso ovest del parco. Il fondo del canyon è composto da rocce vecchie di circa 1,5 miliardi di anni, il residuo di un'antica catena montuosa.

10) Balanced Rock View
Proprio come nell'Arches National Park, anche qui c'è una roccia in... equilibrio!

A 100-meter walk takes you to the Fruita Canyon, the closest canyon to the park's west entrance. The bottom of the canyon is made up of rocks about 1.5 billion years old, the remnant of an ancient mountain range.

I MIGLIORI TRAIL DEL COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT

E' vero che il Colorado National Monument è un parco che non vi obbligherà a particolari ed impegnative escursione a piedi, ma se proprio non doveste riuscire a resistere... quello che fa per voi è il Serpents Trail, che gli abitanti di Grand Junction e dintorni chiamano "la strada più tortuosa al mondo". E' di gran lunga il più bel trail del Colorado National Monument. Costruito addirittura nel 1900, questo particolare trail situato immediatamente dopo l'ingresso est del parco, ha fatto parte sino al 1950 della strada principale che attraversava il parco. Il trail non è di per sé lungo ("solo" 3.4 miglia tra andata e ritorno), ma con i suoi 16 tornanti ed i quasi 250 metri di dislivello, non può essere catalogato come un "easy trail". Il percorso inizia e finisce sulla Rim Rock Drive, ovviamente in due punti ben distinti.

THE BEST THREE TRAILS OF THE COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT

It is true that the Colorado National Monument is a park that will not oblige you to go on special and demanding hikes, but if you really can't resist ...well, the Serpents Trail is what you need. The inhabitants of Grand Junction and its surroundings call it "the most tortuous road in the world". It is by far the most beautiful trail in the Colorado National Monument. Built even in 1900, this particular trail located immediately after the park's east entrance, was part of the main road through the park until 1950. The trail is not so long (just 3.4 miles round trip), but with its 16 hairpin bends and its strong elevation gain (1000 ft) cannot be categorized as an "easy trail". The trail begins and ends along the Rim Rock Drive, obviously in two distinct points.

Un altro bel trail è Otto’s Trail, che prende il nome da John Otto. Lungo poco più di 1 km, conduce ad uno scorcio panoramico molto suggestivo dal quale ammirare tra le altre formazioni rocciose anche Independence Monument e Pipe Organs. L’attacco del sentiero è situato non lontano dal belvedere di Independence Monument View. Il terzo trail che completa il nostro podio dei migliori sentieri escursionistici del Colorado National Monument è il Canyon Rim Trail, un brevissimo percorso (1 miglio tra andata e ritorno) situato a ridosso del visitor center (ad ovest del parco) che porta al bordo del canyon. Se siete degli avventurieri, potrete continuare il trail che si allaccia al Window Rock Trail.

Another nice trail is Otto's Trail, named after John Otto. It's a 1 mile trail that leads to a very suggestive panoramic view from which you'll be able to admire among other rock formations also Independence Monument and Pipe Organs. The trail begins not far from the Independence Monument View viewpoint. The third trail that completes our podium of the best hiking trails in the Colorado National Monument is the Canyon Rim Trail, a very short path (1 mile round trip) located near the visitor center (west of the park) leading to the edge of the canyon. If you are an adventurer, you can continue the trail that connects to the Window Rock Trail.

LA "128", LA STRADA SCENOGRAFICA CHE CONDUCE A MOAB

Lasciato il Colorado National Monument, l'ultima occasione di far rifornimenti (e benzina) prima di Moab è la piccola Fruita. Lasciato alle spalle l'ultimo avamposto del Colorado, il panorama cambia drasticamente. In una decina di miglia spariranno montagne e verde: tutto diventa deserto in un amen ed il caldo torna prepotentemente a fare breccia.

THE "128", THE SCENIC BYWAY THAT LEADS TO MOAB

Once you leave the Colorado National Monument, the last chance to get supplies and gas before Moab is the town of Fruita. Leaving the last Colorado outpost behind you, the landscape changes dramatically. In just a dozen miles, mountains and greenery have disappeared: it's all desert now and it's also really really hot. 

Il cartello che sancisce l'addio allo stato del Colorado ci lascia un po' di nostalgia per uno stato che incredibilmente avevamo sempre sottovalutato durante i precedenti on the road negli Usa e che entra prepotentemente tra i nostri preferiti.

The sign confirms that we're about to leave the state of Colorado. We're already nostalgic, Colorado is a state that we've always incredibly underestimated during the previous on the road in the US. Well, it's now one of our favorites american states!

Il consiglio, se come noi state viaggiando verso Moab, è di lasciare il prima possibile la monotona autostrada "I70" e seguite la scenografica 128: impiegherete un po' più di tempo per raggiungere Moab, ma verrete ripagati da panorami splendidi, con il fiume Colorado a fare da sfondo.

The advice, if like us you are traveling to Moab, is to leave as soon as possible the monotonous highway "I70" and follow the scenic 128: it will take a little more time to reach Moab, but you will be rewarded by splendid panoramas, with the river Colorado as a backdrop.

(Castle Creek Winery)

Passerete per la ghost town di Cisco, poi per Dewey sino a raggiungere la Castle Creek Winery, situata proprio sulle sponde del fiume Colorado, di fatto la più grande azienda vinicola dello Utah. Produce Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay (tutti i suoi vini sono pluripremiati): il clima secco di Moab è ottimale per la coltivazione di uve sane, eccellente per produrre una importante varietà di frutta. La winery, che si trova all'interno dell'area in cui sorge anche lo splendido Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge, è aperta tutti i giorni tranne la domenica.

You will pass through the ghost town of Cisco, then through Dewey until you reach the Castle Creek Winery, located right on the banks of the Colorado River: this is the largest winery in Utah It produces Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay (all its wines are award-winning): the dry climate of Moab is optimum for growing healthy grapes, excellent for producing a variety of fruit, including. The winery, which sits on a historic working ranch called Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge, is open every day except Sunday.

LA SAL MOUNTAIN LOOP, UN'OASI RINFRESCANTE SOPRA MOAB

Moab è ormai dietro l'angolo, ma se voleste raggiungerla in "modo alternativo", abbandonate la 128 nei pressi della Castle Creek Winery ed allungate di una buona oretta il percorso seguendo i 90 km della La Sal Mountain Loop Road, una strada tortuosa di montagna che fa una sorta di "loop" su Moab attraversando le montagne circostanti e regalando scorci molto suggestivi. E' da sempre un'oasi per gli abitanti di Moab che durante la tremenda calura estiva abbandonano la città e percorrono la La Sal Mountain Loop Road per godersi il fresco della montagna: durante il loop attraverserete il passo La Sal, il Passo del Geyser, il Lago Oowah ed il Lago Warner. I quattro principali stop lungo la La Sal Mountain Loop Road sono i seguenti:

1) Castle Valley & Colorado River Scenic Byway

LA SAL MOUNTAIN LOOP, A REFRESHING OASIS OVER MOAB

Moab is now around the corner, but if you want to get there it in a very special way, just leave the 128 near the Castle Creek Winery and drive for an hour along the 90 km of the La Sal Mountain Loop Road, a winding mountain road that makes a kind of loop around Moab crossing the surrounding mountains and giving very suggestive views. It has always been an oasis for the inhabitants of Moab who leave the city during the terrible summer heat and drive along the La Sal Mountain Loop Road to enjoy the coolness of the mountain: you will cross the La Sal pass, the Geyser Pass, Lake Oowah and Lake Warner. The four main stops along the La Sal Mountain Loop Road are as follows:

1) Castle Valley & Colorado River Scenic Byway

2) Desert Overlook
Un'area desertica che regala grandi vedute su Moab e Canyonlands

3) Warner Lake and Campground
Circondato da alberi di pioppi a perdita d'occhio, questo campeggio è semplicistico e magico allo stesso tempo. Una breve passeggiata su un sentiero sterrato ti porterà al piccolo e affascinante Warner Lake. Per raggiungerlo deviare sulla sinistra lungo la 0063 subito dopo aver superato il Whispering Oak ranch.

4) Mill Creek Recreation Area
L'ultimo tratto della La Sal Mountain Loop Road è decisamente tortuoso. La strada sale, sale e poi sale ancora mentre si restringe. Al Mill Creek Recreation Area, dove avrete una bella vista sulla valle, potrete cimentarvi in uno dei tanti trail percorribili.

2) Desert Overlook

3) Warner Lake and Campground
Surrounded by poplar trees as far as the eye can see, this campsite is simplistic and magical at the same time. A short walk on a dirt path will take you to the charming little Warner Lake. If you want to get there, turn left onto 0063 immediately after passing the Whispering Oak ranch.

4) Mill Creek Recreation Area
The last stretch of the La Sal Mountain Loop Road is decidedly tortuous. The road rises, rises and then rises again as it narrows. At the Mill Creek Recreation Area you'll have a beautiful view of the valley and hike one of the many trails.
