Negli undici giorni in Islanda ci siamo allontanati solo un paio di volte dalla "route 1", la strada madre, per un paio di deviazioni che non ci hanno assolutamente deluso. La prima, come vi avevamo anticipato già nel post introduttivo del viaggio, non è in realtà una deviazione poiché l'aeroporto di Keflavik si trova proprio nel cuore della penisola di Reykjanes, che nonostante la vicinanza alla capitale, Reykjavik, continua ad essere un'area poco battuta dal turismo di massa. Eccezion fatta ovviamente per un luogo, che di fatto è il più visitato dell'Islanda, la Blue Lagoon, di cui parleremo nella seconda parte del post.
During the eleven days in Iceland we only left a couple of times the "route 1", the mother road, for a couple of detours that did not disappoint us at all. The first one, as we told you in the introductory post, is not really a detour because the airport of Keflavik is located right in the heart of the Reykjanes peninsula, which despite its proximity to the capital, Reykjavik, is still an area not so beaten by mass tourism. Except of course for one and only place, which is in fact the most visited in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon. Anyway, we'll talk about it in the second part of the post.
Da Reykjanes si percorre un "semi loop" (si comincia dalla "44", si passa per la "425", per la "427" e si conclude con la "42") che vi lascerà di fatto alle porte di Reykjavik. Si costeggia per lunghi tratti il mare, tra lava, crateri (sono almeno 100), aree geotermali... e anche un ponte davvero speciale, il "bridge between continents", che in pochi secondi vi permetterà di passare dall'Europa al continente Nordamericano. E no, non è uno scherzo.
From Reykjanes you have to follow a "semi-loop" (it starts along the "44", pass through the "425", the "427" and ends with the "42") that will leave you at the outskirts of Reykjavik. It runs for long stretches along the sea, among lava, craters (there are at least 100 craters!), geothermal areas... and even a very special bridge, the "bridge between continents", which in a few seconds allows visitors to go from Europe to the North American continent. No, it's not a joke!
Se arrivate da nord, infatti, 21 km a sud di Reykjanes, una piccola deviazione sulla sinistra vi condurrà al parcheggio dal quale, con una brevissima camminata, raggiungerete il ponte lungo 15 metri che attraversa una spaccatura tra le placche tettoniche eurasiatica e nordamericana. Un esordio se vogliamo divertente, che volendo potrebbe proseguire con il ritiro del certificato di avvenuto attraversamento del ponte presso il Reykjanes Information Center.
If you come from the north, in fact, 21 km south of Reykjanes, a small detour on the left leads you to the parking lot from which, with a very short walk, visitors can reach the 15-meters-long bridge that crosses a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. An amusing beginning that could be continued if you go to the Reykjanes Information Center and get the official certificate attesting that you really crossed the bridge!
Scendendo di ulteriori 7 km lungo la strada "425", un'altra deviazione, questa volta verso sinistra, regala una splendida vista sul primo faro d'Islanda, il Reykjanes Lighthouse, risalente al 1878. In realtà questo è il secondo faro, perchè il primo andò interamente distrutto da un incendio all'inizio del '900.
7 km south, along the road "425", there's another detour, this time to the left, which offers a splendid view of the first lighthouse of Iceland, the Reykjanes Lighthouse, dating back to 1878. Actually this is the second lighthouse buolt, because the first one was completely destroyed by fire in the early 1900s.
Proseguendo lungo la sterrata, in direzione del mare, si raggiunge invece Valahnúkamöl, un insieme di scogliere formate da rocce laviche. Ecco, noi di dubbi che l'Islanda fosse stupenda non li avevamo mai avuti, ma dopo il primo stop fotografico ne abbiamo già la certezza: questo paese è incredibilmente bello.
Continuing along the dirt road, towards the sea, you'll see Valahnúkamöl, a set of cliffs formed by lava rocks. We never had any about the beauties of Iceland, but after the first photographic stop we are already certain: this country is incredibly beautiful.
Prima di tornare sulla "425", sempre all'interno del Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark che comprende buonissima parte della penisola di Reykjanes, incrociamo la prima area geotermale della nostra spedizione e, come d'incanto, veniamo catapultati indietro nel tempo, esattamente al 2014, quando visitammo lo Yellowstone National Park nel Montana. Oggi, da buoni "american lover" ci sentiamo davvero a casa. La Gunnuhver Hot Spring è davvero particolare, perchè è l'unica sorgente termale di acqua di mare, ma anche e soprattutto per il fatto che sia molto "nervosa". Qui, infatti, pare che aleggi lo spirito di una ragazza, Gunna, che secondo la leggenda islandese, trovò la morte proprio qui.
Before returning to the "425", still within the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark that includes a good part of the Reykjanes Peninsula, we notice the first geothermal area of our roadtrip and, as if by magic, we are catapulted back in time, exactly to 2014, when we visited the Yellowstone National Park in Montana. Today, as a good "American lover" we feel really at home. The Gunnuhver Hot Spring is really special, because it is the only seawater hot spring, but also and above all for the fact that it is very "nervous". Here, in fact, it seems that hovers the spirit of a girl, Gunna, who according to Icelandic legend, met her death right here.
E' un susseguirsi di view point e di attrazioni uno via l'altro. E troviamo sempre cartelli esplicativi che rendono ancora più facile la visita, anche se il programma preparato non è minuzioso e ricco di particolari. E' un qualcosa a cui non siamo abituati, perchè nei nostri viaggi "americani" le distanze tra una bellezza e l'altra sono sempre importanti: qui invece, ogni 6-7 km, c'è un qualcosa che vi lascia a bocca aperta. Il prossimo è Brimketill lava rock pool (parcheggio sulla destra, 7 km dopo aver lasciato l'Hot Spring), il "calderone d'acqua bianca", una sorta di piscina sul mare formatasi dall'erosione costiera. Se la si visita con la bassa marea (noi non ci siamo riusciti), sarà impossibile non notare la piscina naturale che, sempre secondo le leggende (ogni luogo qui è legato ad una leggenda), era in passato il luogo in cui il troll Oddny si faceva il bagno e lavava i suoi vestiti.
It's a succession of viewpoints and attractions one after the other. And there're also many explanatory signs that make it even easier to visit a place, even if you haven't prepared a meticulous schedule. It's something we're not used to, because in our "American" trips, we have to drive a lot of kilometers before reaching another attraction. Here in Iceland, instead, there's something new every 10 km that leaves you speechless. Next one is Brimketill lava rock pool (parking lot on the right, 7 km after the Hot Spring), the "white water cauldron", a sort of pool on the sea formed by coastal erosion. If you visit it during a low tide (we didn't make it), it will be impossible not to notice the natural pool that, according to the legends (every place here is linked to a legend), was once the place where the troll Oddny used to bath and wash his clothes.
IL VULCANO FAGRADALSFJALL, L'ATTRAZIONE DEL 2021
Per visitare la penisola di Reykjanes basta una singola giornata, durante la quale potrete ammirare le bellezze naturali e spendere anche qualche ora di relax alla Blue Lagoon. Ma se state viaggiando nel 2021 dovrete essere molto bravi nel gestire la giornata senza dover rinunciare a qualcosa. Già, perchè la penisola di Reykjanes sta ospitando il secondo luogo più gettonato dell'Islanda, diventato un "must" al pari della celebre Blue Lagoon: stiamo parlando ovviamente del vulcano Fagradalsfjall, la grande attrazione naturale del 2021. Il vulcano ha, infatti cominciato ad eruttare (dopo un "sonno" durato 9 secoli) il 19 marzo e non ha ancora completato la sua attività nel momento in cui scriviamo (agosto, 2021). Tutti vogliono visitarlo, tutti vogliono ammirare la lava che fuoriesce dal vulcano. E sono tanti gli Islandesi che addirittura si sono sposati qui.
FAGRADALSFJALL VOLCANO, THE MAIN ATTRACTION OF 2021
A single day is definitely enough to visit the Reykjanes Peninsula. You can admire the natural beauties of the land and also spend a few hours relaxing at the Blue Lagoon. But if you're traveling in 2021 you'll have to be very good at managing the day without having to give up something. Yes, because the Reykjanes Peninsula is hosting the current second most popular place in Iceland, which has become a "must" on par with the famous Blue Lagoon: we are obviously talking about the volcano Fagradalsfjall, the great natural attraction of 2021. The volcano started to erupt (after a "sleep" lasted 9 centuries) on March 19 and has not yet completed its activity at the time of writing (August, 2021). Everyone wants to visit it, everyone wants to admire the lava that comes out of the volcano. And there are even many Icelanders who got married there.
Non sappiamo per quanto durerà l'eruzione, ma siamo sicuri che nei prossimi anni avvicinarsi al vulcano per ammirare il "lavoro" svolto da questo incredibile vulcano resterà un qualcosa di imperdibile. Per questo abbiamo deciso di raccontarvi la nostra esperienza (seppur parziale), che comincia da uno dei tre parcheggi creati appositamente per i tanti turisti e curiosi che accorrono per ammirare il vulcano. E' impossibile non notarli. Noi abbiamo scelto il primo, dove un ranger gentilissimo ci ha spiegato come raggiungere il vulcano, mentre si gustava un bel panino dall'unico food truck presente. Ovunque parcheggiate, il sentiero (in questo caso abbiamo percorso il "c") vi condurrà nello stesso punto, ovvero il campo di lava, raggiungibile dopo circa mezz'ora di cammino (1.5 km). Qui abbiamo avuto il primo approccio con la lava, ancora calda, un'esperienza davvero incredibile.
We actually don't know how long the eruption will last, but we are sure that in the next few years approaching the volcano to admire the "work done" by this incredible volcano will still be something not to be missed. For this reason we are about to tell you about our experience (albeit partial), which begins from one of the three parking lots created specifically for the many tourists and curious. You can't just not notice them. We chose the first one, where a very kind ranger explained to us how to reach the volcano, while enjoying a nice sandwich from the only food truck located at the parking lot. Wherever you park, the path (in this case we took the "c" route) will lead you to the same point, the lava field, reachable after a 30 minutes walk (1.5 km). Here we had the first approach with the lava, still hot, a truly incredible experience.
In Islanda tuttavia abbiamo imparato dopo pochi secondi che occorre essere fortunati con il meteo. In questo caso, l'incontro con altri visitatori ha smorzato il nostro entusiasmo. "E' troppo nuvoloso lassù, non si vede niente e rischiate anche che inizi a piovere". Già, perchè il bello in teoria dovrebbe arrivare adesso, perchè una ripida salita che porterà il vostro trail a raggiungere i 4.5 km (almeno tre ore di cammino, tra andata e ritorno) e soprattutto a poter ammirare il vulcano mentre erutta. Ma si è davvero in alto e occorre "una mano" dal meteo, in particolare dalle nuvole. L'importante è trovare sempre il lato positivo di ogni vicenda: in questo caso, il non aver raggiunto la cima ma solamente il campo di lava, ci ha permesso di ammirare tutte le attrazioni della penisola, compresa la Blue Lagoon.
However, here in Iceland we've learned that you have to be lucky with the weather. In this case, other visitors dampened our enthusiasm. "It's too cloudy up there, you can't see anything and it's also starting to rain." Well, you have to know that the best part of the trail is yet to come: a steep climb, in fact, extends the trail to a 4.5 km round trip (it takes at least 3 hours to complete it) and let you admire the volcano as it erupts. But you really need "a hand" from the weather, especially from the clouds. The important thing is to always find the positive side of every story: in this case, we just ended up the trail at the lava field, this allowed us to admire all the other attractions of the peninsula, including the Blue Lagoon
Poco dopo il parcheggio del vulcano, in direzione est e ad una manciata di km prima della svolta lungo la "42", una deviazione di 5.5 km lungo una dissestata ma affascinante sterrata, conduce al Krysuvikurberg Cliffs, il miglior luogo dell'Islanda per il bird-watching. Qui, ogni estate, 60.000 volatili nidificano lungo queste fotogeniche scogliere alte circa 40 metri, compresi i mitici "puffin".
Shortly after the volcano's parking lot, heading east (just before the "42" turn off), a 5.5 km detour along a bumpy but fascinating dirt road leads to the Krysuvikurberg Cliffs, Iceland's best bird-watching spot. Here, every summer, 60,000 birds nest along these photogenic 40-meter-high cliffs, including the legendary puffins.
Reykjavik è ormai molto vicina, abbiamo già svoltato lungo la "42" ma prima di raggiungere la capitale islandese mancano ancora due importanti stop. Il primo è Geothermal Place & Seltun Geothermal area, il "mini Yellowstone" della penisola di Reykjanes. Una passerella ci conduce lungo le diverse bocche vulcaniche e le piscine bollenti, con le montagne colorate della zona che fanno da sfondo perfetto per le sorgenti calde, capaci di raggiungereanche i 200 gradi.
Reykjavik is now very close and we have already turned along the "42", the road that leads to the outskirt of the Iceland's capital. However, there are still two important stops on our travel list, the first one is the Geothermal Place & Seltun Geothermal area, the "little Yellowstone" of the Reykjanes peninsula. A walkway leads us along the various volcanic vents and boiling pools, with the colorful mountains of the area that make a perfect backdrop for the hot springs, which are very very hot (200 degrees celsius).
Il percorso (15 minuti di camminata) è molto semplice ed adatto a tutti. L'odore, un po' come accade a Yellowstone, non è dei migliori, ma i colori sono davvero impressionanti.
The path (15 minute walk) is very easy and suitable for everyone. The smell, a bit like in Yellowstone, is not the best, but the colors are really impressive.
Il secondo ed ultimo stop, situato 4.5 km a nord, è Indjánahöfði, uno scenografico view point sul lago Kleifarvatn, che riempie una fenditura vulcanica è circondato da dirupi di lava plasmati dal vento e da spiagge di sabbia nera. Una leggenda narra che nelle sue acque vi sia un mostro dalle fattezze di serpente e dalle dimensioni di una balena. Meglio scattare una foto e prendere la via di Reykjavik, prima che il mostro esca dall'acqua...
The second and last stop, located 4.5 km to the north, is Indjánahöfði, a scenic viewpoint over Lake Kleifarvatn, which fills a volcanic fissure and is surrounded by lava cliffs shaped by the wind and black sand beaches. A legend says that in its waters there is a huge monster that looks like as big as a whale. Better just take a picture and take the road that leads to Reykjavik, before the monster comes out of the water ...

Distante una decina di km da Reykjavik, questo nuovo hotel diventerà la nostra base per 4 notti. Colazione ottima, possibilità di usufruire dell'ingresso alla palestra Reebok Fitness (situata a fianco dell'hotel) a prezzo scontato. Con i prezzi di Reykjavik, il Vellir Hotel è decisamente consigliato.

RESTAURANT: 100 street food (price range: low. rating: 5/10).
The tripadvisor position (number two) is just inexplicable. The price is the only good thing: quality of food is poor and the fast food (this is definitely not a restaurant) is not clean.
HOTEL: Vellir - Hafnarfjordur (100 euro per night, 4 nights: rating: 8/10)
About ten km from Reykjavik, this new hotel will become our base for 4 nights. Great breakfast, access to the Reebok Fitness gym (located next to the hotel) at a discounted price. If you consider Reykjavik's prices, Vellir Hotel is definitely recommended.
