Se durante la progettazione del vostro viaggio in Islanda avrete seguito il nostro percorso, beh... Akureyri rappresenterà di certo un bel crocevia del vostro itinerario. Qui, a seconda dei giorni che avrete a disposizione, della vostra voglia di continuare ad esplorare il paese islandese, ma anche della probabile stanchezza (fisica, di certo non mentale!) che avrete accumulato, potrete decidere se chiudere immediatamente il cerchio e completare il percorso in 10 giorni dirigendovi verso Reykjavik (quasi 400 km), spingervi verso la bellissima costa ad ovest che fa a capo all'altrettanto splendida Grundafjordur (il tour diventa di 12 giorni) oppure fare le cose davvero in grande stile. Come? Non facendovi mancare nulla ed esplorando anche gli impervi e lontani fiordi del nord, rendendo il vostro viaggio in Islanda un tour di almeno due settimane (14-16 giorni). Cosa abbiamo scelto noi? Siamo stati indecisi fino all'ultimo, perchè nulla divide l'opinione del turista che visita l'Islanda come i fiordi del nord-ovest. Per qualcuno sono un must, per altri è il più classico dei "visti uno, visti tutti": noi ci siamo fidati dei secondi e deciso di scegliere l'opzione "B", quella che prevede Grundafjordur ed il parco nazionale Snæfellsjökull prima di raggiungere Reykjavik...
If you followed our travel diary when planning your trip to Iceland, well ... Akureyri will certainly be a nice crossroads on your itinerary. Here, depending on the days available, on your desire to continue exploring the Icelandic country, but also on the probable fatigue (physical, certainly not mental!) accumulated, you can decide whether to close immediately the loop and complete the route 1 in 10 days heading towards Reykjavik (almost 400 km), push yourself towards the beautiful west coast that is headed by the equally splendid Grundafjordur (it's a 12 days tour) or do things really in style. How? Exploring the rugged and distant northern fjords, making your trip to Iceland a tour of at least two weeks (14-16 days). What did we choose? We were undecided until the end, because nothing divides the opinion of the tourist who visits Iceland like the fjords of the north-west. For some, they are a must, for others it is the most classic "If you've seen one, you've seen them all": we trusted the latter and decided to choose the option "B", the one that includes Grundafjordur and the Snæfellsjökull national park before reaching Reykjavik ...
JOLAHUSID, LA CASA DI BABBO NATALE
L'opzione B, di cui abbiamo parlato nel paragrafo precedente, vi obbligherà ad un lungo, lunghissimo tappone di oltre 400 km lungo la "road 1" in direzione Grundafjordur. E' il prezzo, pesante, da pagare per accorciare i tempi in un'area, l'unica del paese, che offre veramente poco a livello di bellezze naturali. E allora come addolcire la pillola e prepararsi mentalmente alle 6 ore abbondanti spese nel nulla più assoluto del centro nord dell'Islanda? Semplice, scendere 10 km a sud di Akureyri ed entrare nel mondo magico di Jólahúsið - The Christmas House, la casa di Babbo Natale.
JOLAHUSID, THE HOUSE OF SANTA CLAUS
Option B, which we talked about in the previous paragraph, will force you to experience a long, long stage of over 400 km along the "road 1" towards Grundafjordur. It is the heavy price to pay to shorten the time in an area, the only one in the country, which offers very little in terms of natural beauties. Sowhat is the way to mentally prepare for the abundant 6 hours spent in the absolute nothingness of north central Iceland? Simple, go down 10 km south of Akureyri and enter the magical world of Jólahúsið - The Christmas House, the home of Santa Claus.
Aperto nel lontano 1996, Jólahúsið è il luogo in Islanda dove meglio si respira l'atmosfera natalizia. Anche in estate, anche con venti gradi. All'ingresso troverete un piccolo farmers market con prodotti freschissimi e buonissimi (soprattutto i dolci), ed un negozio dall'atmosfera nordica con prodotti tipici del territorio. Dalle marmellate alle salse, dalle tazze alle tovaglie.
Opened back in 1996, Jólahúsið is the place in Iceland where you can experience the most authentic christmas atmosphere. Even in summer, even with twenty degrees celsius. At the entrance you will find a small farmers market with very fresh and delicious products (especially sweets), and a shop with a Nordic atmosphere with typical local products. From jams to sauces, from cups to tablecloths.
Ma il meglio arriva quando si varca l'effettivo ingresso alla "casa di Babbo Natale": sulla sinistra troverete lo storico Eplakofinn - the Apple Shed dove poter assaggiare il tipico dolce, sulla destra una piccola porticina vi condurrà nei due piani magici della casa, fatta di oggetti natalizi provenienti da tutto il mondo (17 paesi), ma anche molti oggetti d'artigianato natalizio islandese.
But the best comes when you cross the actual entrance to the "house of Santa Claus": on the left there's the historic Eplakofinn - the Apple Shed where you can taste the typical dessert, on the right a small door leads visitors to the two magical floors of the house, made of Christmas items from all over the world (17 countries), but also many Icelandic Christmas crafts.
I più piccoli, ma non solo, avranno anche la possibilità di scrivere la "famosa" letterina a Babbo Natale, un'occasione più unica che rara che non ci siamo di certo lasciati sfuggire. All'esterno della casa continua la magia, con le piccole casette degli aiutanti di Babbo Natale, la torre che contiene al suo interno il calendario dell'avvento più grande al mondo e molto, molto altro.
The little ones, but not only them, would also have the opportunity to write the "famous" letter to Santa Claus, a more unique and rare opportunity that we certainly did not miss. The magic continues outside the house, with the little houses of Santa's helpers, the tower that contains the largest advent calendar in the world and much, much more.
NEL REGNO DELLE FOCHE: LA PENISOLA DI VATNSNES
La road 1, solitamente sempre affascinante, in questo tratto a nord è decisamente monotona. Poca civiltà, ma se vogliamo anche poca natura affascinante. L'unica piccola ma meritevole deviazione è quella che abbiamo effettuato 100 km dopo aver lasciato Akureyri, quella che ci ha condotto alle Reykjafoss. Prendete come riferimento la piccola comunità di Varmahlíð, una delle poche presenti in questo lungo tratto di trasferimento, e dirigetevi verso sud sulla "752": una deviazione breve (sulla sinistra) lungo una sterrata condurrà ad un parcheggio all'interno di una proprietà privata. Superate il cancello e percorrete qualche centinaio di metri sino a raggiungere le Reykjafoss.
IN THE KINGDOM OF SEALS: THE VATNSNES PENINSULA
The Road 1, which is always fascinating, is decidedly monotonous in this northern section. Few towns, but also few natural beauties. The only quick but worthwhile detour is the one we made 100 km after leaving Akureyri, the one that led us to Reykjafoss. Take as a reference the small community of Varmahlíð, one of the few communyties present in this long stretch of road 1, and head south on "752": a short detour (on the left) along a dirt road leads to a parking lot located inside a private property. . Go through the gate and walk a few hundred meters until you reach the Reykjafoss.
Non lontano, dopo aver attraversato il piccolo ponticello sulla sinistra delle cascate, inizia il breve percorso che conduce alle Fosslaug Hot Spring. Spulciando su internet, tuttavia, non abbiamo trovato grandi informazioni (né sulla lunghezza del percorso, né sulla bellezza delle hot springs stesse), per cui ci siamo accontentati della vista sulle cascate.
Not far away, after having crossed the small bridge to the left of the falls, the short path that leads to the Fosslaug Hot Spring begins. Sifting through the internet, however, we haven't found much information (neither on the length of the route, nor on the beauty of the hot springs), so we just enjoyed the view of the falls.
Proseguendo, invece, consigliamo la deviazione verso la penisola di Vatnsnes. E' vero che il percorso, già lungo di suo, diventerà ancor più pesante (i chilometri diventano 433), ma nessun fiordo islandese del versante nord è così comodo da visitare come questo. Prendendo come riferimento le Reykjafoss, dovrete aver percorso altri 100 km circa lungo la "1" prima di trovare la deviazione, sulla destra, che conduce alla penisola di Vatnsnes. La strada sterrata (ma adatta ad ogni tipo di vettura) da seguire è la "716" che poi diventa 711 o 717 (entrambe le alternative sono valide), due strade che costeggiano il lago Vesturhopsvatn. Da qui, comincia l'effettiva penisola di Vatnsnes (strada 711), il regno delle foche in Islanda.
Continuing along the road, however, we recommend the detour to the Vatnsnes peninsula. It is true that the route would become even longer (433 km), but no Icelandic fjord on the north side is as comfortable to visit as this one. Taking the Reykjafoss as a reference, you will need to travel another 100 km along the "1" before you find the detour, on the right, which leads to the Vatnsnes peninsula. The dirt road (but suitable for any type of car) to follow is the "716" which then becomes 711 or 717 (both alternatives are valid), two roads that run along the Vesturhopsvatn lake. From here begins the actual Vatnsnes Peninsula (road 711), the kingdom of seals in Iceland.
Sono due gli stop principali lungo la 711, una strada ad anello che copre l'intero fiordo permettendovi di guidare quasi sempre con vista sul mare. Il primo lo troverete poco dopo aver intrapreso il viaggio sulla 711. Non appena avrete superato il Farfuglaheimili hostel and cafe, una piccola deviazione sulla destra conduce a Hvítserkur, un faraglione di origine basaltica sulla costa orientale. There are two main stops along the 711, a loop road that covers the entire fjord and runs close to the sea. The first one is located shortly after thr beginning of the journey on the 711. As soon as you pass the Farfuglaheimili hostel and cafe, a small detour on the right leads to Hvítserkur, a stacks of basaltic origin on the east coast. Its name comes from the color of the guano of the birds (seagulls and fulmars) that nest in large numbers on the rock formation. The spur is about 15 meters high and the two holes at the base give it the appearance of a dragon drinking.
Secondo la tradizione locale, Hvítserkur era un troll che, esasperato dal suono delle campane del convento di Þingeyrarklaustur, decise di distruggere le campane stesse calcolando tuttavia male la distanza dal campanile. L'alba lo sorprese prima che gli fosse possibile raggiungere un rifugio e i raggi del sole lo pietrificarono per sempre. Il sentiero che scende verso il mare consente di raggiungere la spiaggia nera dove, in base alla marea, potrete ammirare anche le foche.
According to local tradition, Hvítserkur was a troll who, exasperated by the ringing of the bells of the Þingeyrarklaustur's convent, miscalculated the distance from the bell tower while he was trying to destroy the bells. He was surprised by the dawn before he could reach a refuge and the sun's rays petrified him forever. The path that descends towards the sea allows you to reach the black beach where, depending on the tide, you can also admire the seals.
Nell'altro versante della penisola, l'altra colonia di foche è la Illugastaðir Seal Colony. Qui, una volta raggiunto il parcheggio (sulla sinistra) situato all'interno di una vecchia fattoria, dovrete seguire un sentiero di circa 1 km a ridosso del mare che conduce al view point. Li troverete una piccola casetta grazie alla quale ripararvi dal freddo mentre ammirate le foche.
GRUNDAFJORDUR, UN GIOIELLINO CON L'HOTEL PIU' BELLO
Prima di raggiungere Grundafjordur, se non sarete troppo stanchi (e noi lo eravamo), potrete deviare dalla "54" e visitare le Selvallafoss (Sheep's waterfall), la cascata delle pecore, oppure spingervi direttamente verso Grundafjordur, attraversando bellissimi campi di lava. Grundafjordur è decisamente carina, ma la menzione speciale qui è per le cabins (distanti circa una decina di km dal paese) dove abbiamo pernottato: Dis Cottage. Stupenda la cabin, eccezionale la vista sul fiordo. Non osiamo immaginare cosa possa diventare questo luogo in inverno quando da questa posizione privilegiatissima potreste ammirare l'aurora boreale...
On the other side of the peninsula, the other seal colony is the Illugastaðir Seal Colony. Here, once you reach the parking lot (on the left) located inside an old farm, just follow a path of about 1 km near the sea that leads to the view point. There you will find a small house thanks to which you can shelter from the cold while admiring the seals.
GRUNDAFJORDUR, A JEWEL WITH THE NICEST HOTEL
Before reaching Grundafjordur, if you are not too tired, make a detour from the "road 54" and visit the Selvallafoss (Sheep's waterfall), or go directly to Grundafjordur, crossing beautiful lava fields. Grundafjordur is very cozy, but the special mention here is for the cabins (about ten km from the town) where we stayed: Dis Cottage. The cabin is wonderful, the view of the fjord is exceptional. We do not dare to imagine what this place will become in winter when from this privileged position you could admire the Northern Lights ...
Dove cenare a Grundafjordur? Ecco, qui dovrete giocare d'astuzia, perchè l'unico ristorante della città è sempre, sempre pieno. Per questo consigliamo di effettuare una prenotazione qualche giorno prima, per non rischiare di rimanere senza cena, visto e considerato che anche il supermercato chiude molto presto. Il Bjargarsteinn Mathús è un ristorante di qualità, con un menù ristretto ma molto, molto interessante. Ed una vista davvero speciale. Se non doveste trovare posto qui, l'unica alternativa è il 59 Bistro Bar.

Where to dine in Grundafjordur? Well, here you will have to play smarter because the only restaurant in the city is always, always full. This is why we recommend making a reservation a few days in advance, so as not to risk running out of dinner, given that the supermarket also closes very early. Bjargarsteinn Mathús is a quality restaurant, with a limited but very, very interesting menu. And a very special view. If you can't find a seat here, the only alternative is 59 Bistro Bar.
