Solitamente quando si visitano British Columbia ed Alberta il "fly and drive" prevede quasi sempre la tratta Vancouver-Calgary, un viaggio nel cuore delle stupende "rockies" canadesi. In tanti, anzi troppi, però una volta giunti a Calgary, mentre le montagne ormai sono ormai soltanto visibili in lontananza, decidono di concludere il loro "on the road" e tornare a casa. Nulla di più sbagliato, perchè questa parte di Alberta è davvero stupendo ed insolita, diverso da tutto quello che a cui vi eravate abituati nelle precedenti tappe del vostro viaggio. Non dimenticatevi dunque in fase di organizzazione, di considerare qualche giorno (2-3) per la visita delle praterie dell'Alberta e, nel caso ne aveste qualcuno in più (5), spingetevi fino ad Edmonton. Fatelo e non ve ne pentirete, perchè l'area di Drumheller vale da sola il viaggio...
Usually, when visiting British Columbia and Alberta, the fly and drive often involves the Vancouver-Calgary route, a journey into the heart of Canada's amazing rockies. However, many, too many in fact, as soon as they are in Calgary, while the mountains are now only visible in the distance, decide to end their on the road and return home. Nothing could be more wrong, because this part of Alberta is truly stupendous and unusual, different from everything you were used to. So, while planning the schedule of your trip, don't forget to consider a few days (2-3) for visiting the Alberta prairies and, in case you have a few more days (5), push on to Edmonton. Do it and you will not regret it, because the Drumheller area alone is worth the trip....
DALLE MONTAGNE ALLE "BADLANDS" IN POCO PIU' DI 100 KM...
Calgary e Drumheller distano solamente 136 km ma, mentre nella "città olimpica" si respira ancora l'aria di montagna (anche se ormai s'intravedono solamente guardando verso ovest), a Drumheller beh...sembra di essere davvero in un altro mondo. Solo percorrendo la Highway 9, circondati da enormi praterie, s'intuisce che tutto è cambiato. Ed anche molto in fretta. Fa caldo, molto caldo e le "Badlands canadesi" sono sempre più vicine.
FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE "BADLANDS" IN JUST OVER 100 KM....
Calgary and Drumheller are only 136 km apart, but while in the "Olympic city" you can still breathe the mountain atmosphere (even if you can now just glimpse them looking westward), in Drumheller well...it really feels like being in another world. Just driving down Highway 9, surrounded by huge prairies, you get a sense that everything has changed. And very quickly, too. It is hot, very hot, and the "Canadian Badlands" are getting closer and closer.
Se chiudete gli occhi vi sembrerà di essere nel South Dakota, di fronte al Badlands National Park, uno dei parchi nazionali statunitensi più belli. Invece siamo alle porte di Drumheller e ad ogni angolo c'è qualcosa per cui vale la pena fermarsi. Tanto da far diventare la giornata davvero intensa (e questo lunghissimo post è qui a testimoniarlo!) ed impegnativa. Ma assolutamente fantastica.
If you close your eyes, you will feel like you are in South Dakota, across from Badlands National Park, one of the most beautiful U.S. national parks. Instead, we are on the outskirts of Drumheller and at every corner there is something worth stopping for. So much so that the day gets really busy (and this very long post is here to witness it!) and demanding. But absolutely fantastic.
Ma cosa sono le Badlands? Per capirlo meglio dobbiamo tornare indietro al 1743, quando gli esploratori canadesi francesi François e Louis Joseph de la Verendrye coniarono il termine "Badlands" ("les mauvaises terres" in francese) non appena si trovarono davanti queste "terre cattive" durante il loro peregrinare lungo le praterie dell'Alberta Centrale. Ora, nonostante siano ancora decisamente inospitali, sono un paradiso per gli amanti della natura, della geologia e della storia. Qui, ovunque vi giriate, sarete a contatto con una terra ricca di carbone e fossili, questi ultimi scoperti per primi dal popolo delle Prime Nazioni, convinti peraltro che fossero tracce di giganteschi antenati del bisonte, che i calanchi fossero invece un gigante cimitero per questi animali e che gli Hoodos (di cui parleremo) fossero infine i protetori degli spiriti dei bisonti.
But what are the Badlands? To better understand it, we have to go back to 1743, when French Canadian explorers François and Louis Joseph de la Verendrye coined the term "Badlands" ("les mauvaises terres" in French) as soon as they encountered these "bad lands" during their wanderings along the prairies of Central Alberta. Now, although they are still decidedly inhospitable, they are a paradise for lovers of nature, geology and history. Here, wherever you turn, you will be in touch with a land rich in charcoal and fossils, the latter first discovered by the First Nations people, who were convinced, moreover, that they were traces of giant bison ancestors, that the badlands were instead a giant graveyard for these animals, and that the Hoodos were ultimately the protectors of bison spirits.
Guardando le Badlands ora, è difficile immaginare che i dinosauri ed altri animali enormi una volta vivessero qui, ma milioni e milioni di anni fa queste terre erano ricoperte di giungle e fiumi. Le attuali Badlands si sono invece formate circa 10 mila anni fa, quando inondazioni crearono di fatto la Red Deer Valley.
Looking at the Badlands now, it is hard to imagine that dinosaurs and other huge animals once lived here, but millions and millions of years ago these lands were covered with jungles and rivers. Instead, today's Badlands were formed about 10,000 years ago, when floods effectively created the Red Deer Valley.
Il nostro viaggio nelle Badlands comincia quando siamo ancora lungo la highway 9 e Drumheller dista ancora circa 20 km. Dal nulla, infatti, davanti a noi compare l'Horseshoe Canyon, una "U" (da qui il nome, ferro di cavallo appunto) circondata da una prateria dorata. Le pareti dell'Horseshoe Canyon, fatte di strisce marroncine, riportano al periodo Cretaceo, quando i dinosauri vagavano in un lussureggiante habitat subtropicale. Ora sono un paradiso per i fotografi o per chi abbia voglia di camminare, seguendo il sentiero circolare di 4 km (peralto non semplicissimo da seguire, soprattutto nella parte centrale) che conduce attraverso i calanchi.
Our trip to the Badlands begins while we are still along Highway 9 and Drumheller is still about 10 miles away. Out of nowhere, in fact, the Horseshoe Canyon appears before us, a kind of "U" (hence the name, horseshoe precisely) surrounded by golden prairie. The walls of Horseshoe Canyon, made of brownish stripes, harken back to the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs roamed in a lush subtropical habitat. Now they are a paradise for photographers or for those who feel like walking, following the 4-kilometer circular trail (however, not the easiest to follow, especially the middle part) that leads through the gullies.
LA HOODOO DRIVE ED IL LAST CHANCE SALOON...STORIE D'ALTRI TEMPI
La Highway 9 termina alle porte di Drumheller ma, prima di addentrarci nella "città dei dinosauri", svoltiamo a destra, lungo la "10", conosciuta anche come Hoodoo Drive, una lingua d'asfalto lunga 25 km che conduce ad incredibili e fotogenici "hoodos", stranissime formazioni rocciose composte da sabbia e argilla dalla forma unica simile ad un fungo. Il luogo migliore per ammirarli è l'Hoodos Trail (dal 2022 si paga l'accesso al parcheggio), che troverete sulla sinistra lungo la "10".
HOODOO DRIVE AND THE LAST CHANCE SALOON...STORIES OF YESTERYEAR
Highway 9 ends at the outskirts of Drumheller, but before we enter the "dinosaur town," we turn right along "highway 10," also known as Hoodoo Drive, a 25-kilometer-long tongue of asphalt that leads to incredible and photogenic hoodos, very strange rock formations composed of sand and clay with a unique mushroom-like shape. The best place to admire them is the Hoodos Trail (since 2022, visitors have to pay for parking access), which is located on the left along "10."
L'Hoodoo Drive non è una "loop road", pertanto de doveste aver voglia di seguire strade diverse sulla via del ritorno verso Drumheller, il consiglio è di proseguire oltre l''Hoodos Trail e svoltare a destra una volta raggiunta la piccola comunità di East Coulee.
Hoodoo Drive is not a loop road, so should you feel like following different roads on the way back to Drumheller, the advice is to continue past the Hoodos Trail and turn right once you reach the small community of East Coulee.
Una delle principali attrazioni dell'area è l'Atlas Coal Mine, una delle più grandi e longeve miniere dell'Alberta, che offre tour giornalieri che consentono (anche grazie al trenino che attraversa la miniera stessa) di vivere qualche ora come se foste dei minatori degli anni '30 del secolo scorso. Superata la Atlas Coal Mine, noterete la Danish Church Dalum, una chiesa costruita dai primi immigrati danesi: proseguite ancora dritto per poi svoltare ancora a destra ed immergervi nella "10 x Road". In realtà questa strada parallela alla Hoodos Drive comincia a sud come Range Road 195, poi diventare "10 x Road", una strada davvero... d'altri tempi.
One of the area's main attractions is the Atlas Coal Mine, one of Alberta's largest and longest-lived mines, which offers daily tours that allow visitors (thanks in part to the little train that runs through the mine itself) to experience a few hours as if you were a miner in the 1930s. Once you pass the Atlas Coal Mine, you will notice the Danish Church Dalum, a church built by the first Danish immigrants: go straight on again, then turn right and plunge into the "10 x Road." Actually, this road parallels to the Hoodos Drive begins in the south as Range Road 195, then becomes "10 x Road," a road truly ... of yesteryear.
E non solo per il Last Chance Saloon, il cui slogan è giustamente "non esiste un posto così remoto come questo". Il Last Chance Saloon è un ex bar-hotel trasformato in un punto di ritrovo per gli amanti dell'on the road ed in particolare delle Harley Davidson, un saloon stupendo con cimeli d'epoca, macchine fotografiche Brownie, vecchie scatole di latta per sigarette e band box ancora perfettamente funzionante.
And not just for the Last Chance Saloon, whose slogan is aptly "there is no place as remote as this." The Last Chance Saloon is a former bar-hotel turned into a hotspot for on-the-road enthusiasts and Harley Davidson lovers in particular, a stunning saloon with vintage memorabilia, Brownie cameras, old cigarette tins, and band boxes still in perfect working order.
E di fianco un negozio che vende prodotto locali ed il Rosedale Hotel, che accoglie con quello spirito western (nel vero senso della parola) gli avventurieri. L'economia locale, come potete immaginare, vive e muore con il saloon, anche perchè la piccola comunità di Wayne può vantare solamente su... 27 abitanti!
And next door there is a store selling local produce and the Rosedale Hotel, which welcomes adventurers with that Western (literally) spirit. The local economy, as you can imagine, lives and dies with the saloon, not least because the small community of Wayne can only boast on... 27 inhabitants!
La Highway 10X, che comincia proprio qui al Last Chance Saloon, è un tratto di 5.6 km che si stacca dalla Highway 10 e collega proprio Wayne con la strada principale. Segue il corso del fiume Rosebud all'interno di un canyon profondo circa 100-150 metri e solo grazie a 9 ponti (molto scenografici) permette di raggiungere il saloon.
Highway 10X, which begins right here at the Last Chance Saloon, is a 5.6-kilometer section that breaks off from Highway 10 and connects Wayne with the main road. It follows the course of the Rosebud River within a canyon about 100-150 meters deep and only thanks to 9 bridges (very scenic) allows people to reach the saloon.
DRUMHELLER, LA "CASA" DEI DINOSAURI
Di Drumheller si può dire tutto ed il contrario di tutto. Ma se siete appassionati di paleontologia, o almeno curiosi, non potete almeno una volta nella vita passare da queste parti. Ecco, non pensate però che di questa cittadina si parli poi tanto, tanto è sovrastata dalle vicine Calgary ed Edmonton e soprattutto dai parchi nazionali di Banff e Jasper. Eppure, come abbiamo già detto, da queste parti si "deve" passare nonostante sia snobbata dalla maggior parte degli itinerari turistici. Qua troverete due siti tutelati a livello storico e patrimonio Unesco (Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump ed il Dinosaur Provincial Park), un percorso in auto semplicemente stupendo (Dinosaur Loop Trail) ed un museo dedicato ai dinosauri tra i più importanti al mondo, il Royal Tyrrell Museum. Ovviamente, mentre un tempo l'intera economia era basata sul carbone, oggi tutto a Drumheller nasce e muore... con i dinosauri e le loro ossa. Ovunque guardiate troverete un dinosauro. E non è uno scherzo.
DRUMHELLER, THE "HOME" OF DINOSAURS
Everything and the opposite of all can be said about Drumheller. But if you are fond of paleontology, or at least curious, you must at least once in your life visit this town. However, Here, don't think that this small town is talked about all that much, because it's overlooked by nearby Calgary and Edmonton and especially the national parks of Banff and Jasper. Yet, as we have already mentioned, you must pass through these lands despite being snubbed by most tourist itineraries. Here you will find two historically protected and Unesco World Heritage sites (Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump and Dinosaur Provincial Park), a simply stunning driving trail (Dinosaur Loop Trail) and one of the most important dinosaur museums in the world, the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Of course, while at one time the entire economy was based on coal, today everything in Drumheller lives and dies with dinosaurs and their bones. Everywhere you look, you will find a dinosaur. And this isn't a joke.

O ancora volete godervi la vista di alcune delle case più carine della cittadina? Nel giardino non troverete il solito cagnolino, ma un bel brontosauro.
Or still want to enjoy the view of some of the prettiest houses in town? In the garden you will not find the usual little dog, but a nice brontosaurus.
Non vi basta? Non c'è problema. Nel cuore della città, non lontano dal downtown, c'è anche il dinosauro più grande al mondo, un T-Rex che è addirittura comparso nel guinness dei primati. Già, perchè con i suoi 26 metri di altezza (ed i 46 di lunghezza), è davvero gigantesco. Ok, forse questo è un po' troppo (pensate che si può anche salire in cima attraverso 106 scalini ed il ticket costa 4 dollari), anche perchè la cosa migliore di questo enorme parcheggio è il bel giardino con stranissime fontane che rinfrescano nei mesi più caldi.
Not enough for you? No problem. In the heart of the city, not far from downtown, there is also the world's largest dinosaur, a T-Rex that has even appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records. Yeah, because he is 26 meters tall (and 46 meters long). it's really gigantic. Okay, maybe that's a bit much (think that you can even climb to the top via 106 steps and the ticket costs $4), also because the best thing about this huge parking lot is the beautiful garden with weird fountains that cool off in the warmer months.
A nord della città è situato invece il Royal Tyrrell Museum, che vanta numerosi scheletri di dinosauri e possibilità di divertenti escursioni guidate. Vi sembrerà di essere dietro le quinte di Jurassic Park solo che qui è tutto vero. Una delle sale più popolari è la “Dinosaur Hall” (“sala dei dinosauri”), con oltre 40 scheletri di dinosauri ricostruiti: sono esposti esemplari di Tyrannosaurus rex, Albertosaurus, Stegosaurus e Triceratopos. Troverete anche il Triassic Giant” (“Gigante del Triassico”), un fossile lungo ben 21 metri del più grande rettile marino conosciuto al mondo, lo Shastasaurus. Una finestra aperta sul “laboratorio di preparazione” consente infine ai visitatori di osservare i tecnici mentre preparano i fossili per la ricerca e l’esposizione. Proprio fuori dal Museo, prende il via il Badlands Interpretive Trail, un viaggio di 1.4 km all'interno delle Badlands. Il sentiero fa parte del Midland Provincial Park, un parco provinciale istituito nel 1979 per conservare un capitolo significativo della storia delle miniere di carbone dell'Alberta.
In contrast, to the north of town is the Royal Tyrrell Museum, which boasts numerous dinosaur skeletons and opportunities for fun guided tours. You'll feel like you're behind the scenes of Jurassic Park, but it's all real here. One of the most popular rooms is the "Dinosaur Hall", with more than 40 reconstructed dinosaur skeletons: specimens of Tyrannosaurus rex, Albertosaurus, Stegosaurus and Triceratopos are on display. You will also find the Triassic Giant", a fossil as long as 21 meters of the world's largest known marine reptile, Shastasaurus. Finally, an open window to the "preparation laboratory" allows visitors to observe technicians as they prepare fossils for research and display. Just outside the Museum, there's the Badlands Interpretive Trail, a 1.4-mile journey into the Badlands. The trail is part of Midland Provincial Park, a provincial park established in 1979 to preserve a significant chapter in Alberta's coal mining history.
IL DINOSAUR TRAIL, TRA TRAGHETTI, MARMOTTE E VISTE INCREDIBILI
A Drumheller prende il via (e si conclude) il Dinosaur Trail, un percorso ad anello di 48 km che si snoda in direzione sud-ovest seguendo due strade, la "837" e la "838", dove il fiume Red Deer e le Badlands faranno da sfondo ad un paesaggio davvero incredibile. E l'unico modo per attraversare il fiume sarà il traghetto Bleriot Ferry, un'altra esperienza nell'esperienza. Come si segue il Dinosaur Trail? Semplice, lasciate alle vostre spalle il Royal Tyrrell Museum e proseguite lungo la "838" sino a raggiungere il primo degli stop, la suggestiva "The Little Church" con il suo leggio ed i soli 6 posti a sedere. E' una piccola chiesa con la sottile guglia bianca e la classica forma delle chiese protestanti, costruita per la prima volta nel 1968 e poi ricostruita dai detenuti del Drumheller Institution nel 1991.
THE DINOSAUR TRAIL, FERRIES, MARMOTS AND INCREDIBLE VIEWS
The Dinosaur Trail kicks off (and ends) in Drumheller, a 48-mile loop trail that winds southwest following two roads, "837" and "838," where the Red Deer River and the Badlands provide the backdrop for some truly incredible scenery. And the only way to cross the river is the Bleriot Ferry, another experience within the experience. How do you follow the Dinosaur Trail? It's easy, leave the Royal Tyrrell Museum behind you and continue along "838" until you reach the first of the stops, the striking "The Little Church" with its lectern and only 6 seats. It is a small church with a slender white spire and the classic shape of Protestant churches, first built in 1968 and then rebuilt by Drumheller Institution inmates in 1991.
Proseguendo vi troverete di fronte il bellissimo Horsethief Canyon, che assomiglia molto all'Horseshoe Canyon di cui vi abbiamo parlato in precedenza. Con la differenza che qui abbiamo trovato tantissime marmotte che non volevano più lasciarci proseguire.
Continuing on, you'll notice the beautiful Horsethief Canyon, which looks very much like the Horseshoe Canyon we told you about earlier. The difference being that here we found so many marmots that did not want to let us continue.
Arrivati al Red Deer River, l'unico modo per passare all'altra sponda e salire a bordo dello storico Bleriot Ferry (gratuito), un traghetto a fune in servizio addirittura dal 1913. In poco meno di cinque minuti vi ritroverete sulla "837" per concludere il loop lungo il Dinosaur Trail.
When you get to the Red Deer River, the only way to cross it and get to the other side is to board the historic Bleriot Ferry (free of charge), a cable ferry that has been in service since as early as 1913. In just under five minutes you will find yourself on "837" to end the loop along the Dinosaur Trail.
L'ultimo stop è una deviazione sulla sinistra, quella che conduce all'Orkney View Point, dal quale potrete ammirare dall'alto il Red Deer River. In conclusione di questo lunghissimo post dedicato all'area di Drumheller, non dimenticatevi della possibilità di pernottare anche nella vicina Three Hills, più economica di Drumheller ma ovviamente meno fornita a livello di servizi.
The last stop is a detour to the left, the one that leads to Orkney View Point, from which you can admire the Red Deer River from above. In conclusion to this very long post devoted to the Drumheller area, don't forget the possibility of also staying overnight in nearby Three Hills, which is cheaper than Drumheller but obviously less well-stocked in terms of services.
