C'è una zona della costa orientale degli Stati Uniti ormai famosa anche in Europa grazie ad un apprezzato reality show che prende il nome proprio dalla lingua di terra che rappresenta la costa del New Jersey, il Jersey Shore. Non tutti sanno però che il Jersey Shore, le cui cittadine più famose sono sicuramente Atlantic City (La Las Vegas dell'est) e Cape May, è ancora oggi una delle mete estive preferite del turismo americano grazie a spiagge interminabili, infiniti lungomare ricchi di attrazioni e ricettività di altissimo livello. E, non poteva esserci miglior posto per concludere un viaggio incredibile, con le ultime due giornate a spasso per i 349 km di costa (e 210 spiagge!) che compongono la penisola di Sandy Hook, per l'ultimo stato del road trip, il più "italiano" di tutti, the Great State of New Jersey.

There is an area of the East Coast of the United States that is now famous even in Europe thanks to a popular reality show named after the very tongue of land that represents the New Jersey shore. Not everyone knows, however, that the Jersey Shore, whose most famous towns are surely Atlantic City (The Las Vegas of the East) and Cape May, is still one of the favorite summer destinations of American tourism, thanks to endless beaches, beautiful waterfronts full of attractions and top-notch accommodations. And, there could be no better place to end an incredible trip, with the last two days wandering the 20 miles of coastline (and 210 beaches!) that make up the Sandy Hook Peninsula, to the last state of the road trip, the most "Italian" of them all, the Great State of New Jersey.
CAPE MAY, TRA STORIA, VINO E... SPIAGGE
LA DESTINAZIONE NUMERO UNO DEGLI STATI UNITI PER CHI AMA IL MARE
Una volta superati uno dei due immensi ponti, il Commodore Barry Bridge oppure il Delaware Memorial Bridge che sovrastano il fiume Delaware, si saluta Wilmington e lo stato del Delaware per abbracciare il New Jersey, lo "Stato Giardino" per via del tantissimo "verde" che lo caratterizza. La meta finale è il profondo sud del Jersey Shore, la costa del New Jersey, e quindi Cape May, il punto più basso dell'intero stato. Ma, prima di parlare nel dettaglio della città di Cape May e della sua "sorellina", la vicinissima Wildwood, Poco dopo aver lasciato il Delaware, assicuratevi di far visita al Cowtown Farmers Market, un vero e proprio mercato agricolo bisettimanale (martedì e giovedì) aperto addirittura dal 1926 e capace di ospitare fino al 2007 anche un'autentica asta del bestiame. Se invece amate il vino, in una terra in cui si produce del buonissimo vino (e ne parleremo anche in conclusione di post) l'indirizzo da non perdere è quello della Auburn Road Vineyard & Winery. Oltre ad assaggiare il loro vino, potrete acquistare diversi prodotti alimentari e, se capitate da queste parti il venerdì sera, anche cenare in un contesto scenografico impareggiabile. Ma non è finita qui, perchè tra le grandi attrazioni dell'area che fa capo a Cape May c'è sicuramente L'East Point Lighthouse, conosciuto fino al 1913 come Maurice River Light. Costruito nel 1849, è il secondo faro più antico dello stato del New Jersey ed è stato restaurato nel 1999 (ed arredato) per permettere ai visitatori di ammirarlo anche dall'interno.
CAPE MAY, AMONG HISTORY, WINE AND... BEACHES
THE NUMBER ONE DESTINATION IN THE USA FOR THOSE WHO LOVE THE SEA
Once past one of the two huge bridges, either the Commodore Barry Bridge or the Delaware Memorial Bridge overlooking the Delaware River, it's time to say goodbye to Wilmington and the state of Delaware to embrace New Jersey, also knowed as the "Garden State" because of the many green areas that characterize the state. The final destination is deep south of the Jersey Shore, and then Cape May, the lowest point in the entire state. But, before talking in detail about the town of Cape May and its "little sister," the very nearby Wildwood, Shortly after leaving Delaware, be sure to pay a visit to the Cowtown Farmers Market, a real biweekly farmers' market (Tuesdays and Thursdays) that opened open in 1926 and capable of hosting even an authentic cattle auction until 2007. If, on the other hand, you love wine, in a land where some very good wine is produced (i will also discuss this in the conclusion of this post), the address not to be missed is the one that lead to the Auburn Road Vineyard & Winery. In addition to tasting their wine, you can buy a variety of food products and, if you happen to be in these parts on a Friday night, also dine in an unparalleled scenic setting. But that's not the end of the story, because among the great attractions of the Cape May area, there is definitely The East Point Lighthouse, known until 1913 as Maurice River Light. Built in 1849, it is the second oldest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey and was restored in 1999 (and furnished) to allow visitors to admire it from the inside as well.
Se invece avrete voglia di conoscere nel dettaglio la storia di questa zona del Jersey Shore, nulla può battere l'Historic Cold Spring Village, in cui potrete rivivere le attività quotidiane degli abitanti del South Jersey tra il 1789 ed il 1840 (ingresso: 14 dollari), mentre gli appassionati di trekking e di natura si dirigeranno sicuramente al Cape May Point State Park e Lighthouse. Sia per salire i 199 gradini del faro di Cape May, che per percorrere i tre sentieri (red, blue e yellow) che compongono il parco e consentono al visitatore di raggiungere le aree paludosi (e quelle delle dune costiere) che compongono il bellissimo parco statale. Pensate che all'interno dello State Park potrete ammirare anche la Torre di Controllo del Fuoco (Fire Control Tower 23), ultima torre risalente alla seconda guerra mondiale rimasta intatta nello stato del New Jersey. Il consiglio è quello di seguire il blue trail e percorrerlo interamente fino all'intersezione con lo Yellow, seguirlo per una piccola porzione e poi chiudere il loop con l'ultimo tratto lungo il Red Trail.
If, on the other hand, you will want to learn in detail about the history of this part of the Jersey Shore, nothing can beat the Historic Cold Spring Village, where visitors can relive the daily activities of South Jersey residents between 1789 and 1840 (admission: $14), while hiking and nature enthusiasts are sure to head to Cape May Point State Park and Lighthouse. Either to climb the 199 steps of the Cape May Lighthouse or to hike the three trails (red, blue and yellow) that make up the park and allow visitors to reach the marshy areas (and those of the coastal dunes) that are the most fascinating part of the state park. Just think that inside the Cape May State Park and Lighthouse, visitors can also admire the Fire Control Tower (Fire Control Tower 23), the last remaining intact World War II tower in the state of New Jersey. The advice is to follow the Blue Trail and walk it entirely to the intersection with the Yellow one, follow it for a small portion and then end the loop with the last stretch along the Red Trail.

Se quelle che ho menzionato sono solo alcune delle tantissime attività che caratterizzano i dintorni di Cape May, pensate a quanto possa essere intrigante la piccola città di 3500 anime che è una delle più antiche e famose stazioni balneari degli interi Stati Uniti, capace con i suoi piacevoli viali alberati e i deliziosi cottage vittoriani, di essere una delle mete preferite del turismo a stelle e strisce. Oltre alla sua splendida architettura del 19° secolo (sono oltre 600 le case vittoriane, molte delle quali diventate oggi rinomati bed and breakfast), Cape May vanta uno scenario naturale mozzafiato.

If what i have mentioned are just a few of the many activities around Cape May, just think of how intriguing may be the small town (3,500 inhabitants) which is one of the oldest and most famous seaside resorts in the entire United States, capable with its pleasant tree-lined boulevards and delightful Victorian cottages, of being a favorite destination for many and many americans. In addition to its stunning 19th-century architecture (there are more than 600 Victorian houses, many of which have become renowned bed and breakfasts), Cape May also boasts breathtaking natural scenery.
Migliaia di costa sabbiosa incontaminata si estendono lungo la costa, nascosta all'estremità meridionale del New Jersey, dove l'Oceano Atlantico incontra la baia del Delaware. La più famosa? Sicuramente la Diamond Beach, una delle spiagge più belle dell'intera east coast americana, famosa per i suoi diamanti, che in realtà sono cristalli di quarzo che si riversano a riva.
Thousands of pristine sandy shorelines stretch along the coast, tucked away at the southern end of New Jersey, where the Atlantic Ocean meets Delaware Bay. The most famous? Undoubtedly Diamond Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire U.S. East Coast, famous for its diamonds, which are actually quartz crystals that wash ashore.
Tra le cose da non perdere a Cape May c'è sicuramente il downtown, caratterizzato dal quartiere storico di Washington Street Mall (tra Ocean Street e Perry Street), che comprende tre isolati di allettanti negozi ed un'area pedonale che soprattutto in estate è viva da mattino a sera.
Among the things not to be missed in Cape Ma, there is definitely downtown, featuring the historic Washington Street Mall (located between Ocean Street and Perry Street), which includes three blocks of enticing stores and a pedestrian area that especially in summer is alive from morning to night.
Cosa fare a Cape May di sera? Il consiglio è in primis di cenare (non troppo tardi, ricordatevi gli "orari americani") alla stupenda Willow Creek Farm Winery, un'altra cantina (questa però molto più vicina alla città e quindi più comoda da raggiungere) di altissimo di livello. Situato nella pianura costiera esterna del New Jersey e circondato dall'oceano e dalla baia, il vigneto di 50 acri gode di un microclima unico che ricorda davvero da vicino quello di Bordeaux, in Francia, e che regala vendemmie eccezionali. Ma è il contesto in cui cenerete che è davvero mozzafiato, con una vista diretta sui vigneti e con piatti davvero di qualità. Se vi avanza tempo, sempre a Cape May (quindi prima di spostarvi per il resto della serata nella vicina Wildwood), fate una capatina anche al Nauti Spirits Distillery, che offre sia tour ma anche cocktail di qualità nel loro bar. E' una delle poche “farm to bottle distillery”, oltre ad essere tra le più antiche distellerie dello stato del New Jersey.
What to do in Cape May in the evening? First and foremost, the advice is to dine (not too late, just remember the "American opening hours"!) at the stunning Willow Creek Farm Winery, another amazing winery (this one, however, is located much closer to the town and therefore more convenient to reach). Located on New Jersey's Outer Coastal Plain and surrounded by the ocean and the bay, the 50-acre vineyard enjoys a unique microclimate that is truly reminiscent of that of Bordeaux, France, and boasts exceptional vintages. You're going to dine in a truly breathtaking setting, with direct views of the vineyards and truly quality dishes. If you have time to spare, still in Cape May (so before moving to nearby Wildwood for the rest of the evening), also drop in at Nauti Spirits Distillery, which offers both tours but also quality cocktails in their bar. It is one of the few "farm to bottle distilleries," as well as being among the oldest distilleries in the state of New Jersey.
Qualche chilometro a nord di Cape May c'è la meno affascinate, ma sicuramente più giovanile Wildwood. E' qui che vi consiglio di spendere la vostra serata (soprattutto quelle estive), partendo dalla pittoresca foto che non potrete non scattare al Wildwoods Beach Ball Sign, per poi percorrere le svariate centinaia di metri dello stupendo boardwalk (ricco di negozi a tema mare e fast food) che conduce al Morey's Piers & Beachfront Waterparks, un parco divertimenti situato proprio sul lungomare.
A few miles north of Cape May, don't miss the less charming but certainly more youthful town of Wildwood. I totally recommend you to spend the evening (especially the summer ones) right here, starting with the picturesque photo at Wildwoods Beach Ball Sign, and then walking the several hundred yards of the stunning boardwalk (filled with beach-themed stores and fast food restaurants) that leads to Morey's Piers & Beachfront Waterparks, an amusement park located right on the waterfront.
