DUE CUORI PER VIAGGIARE: Visit Big Island, Hawaii - Five day itineraries around the Island (day 5: Hilo and its sorroundings)

Se gli amanti delle spiagge bianche e sabbiose, delle cittadine da cartolina e dei resort extralusso avranno sicuramente apprezzato maggiormente Kona ed i suoi dintorni, quelli da "zaino in spalla" e amanti dell' "aloha spirit" non potranno non avere un debole per Hilo ed i suoi dintorni. Intendiamoci, Hilo non è una città turistica e non è neppure tanto bella: se dovessimo fare un paragone (molto, molto forzato) con l'isola di Maui, Kona e Lahaina, Hilo è Kahului. Ma quello che troverete nei pressi del più importante centro abitato dell'isola non lo troverete nel versante ovest.

If lovers of white and sandy beaches, picture-perfect destinations. and ultra-luxury resorts will better appreciate Kona and its surroundings, backpackers and lovers of the "aloha spirit" will have a soft spot for Hilo and its surroundings. Mind you, Hilo is not a tourist city and it is not even so beautiful: if we were to make a comparison (forced) with the island of Maui, Kona looks like Lahaina, Hilo looks like Kahului. Even if Hilo is the most important city of Big Island, it offers a lot of things to do and see.

E probabilmente ve ne sarete già accorti nella giornata precedente quando, per poter visitare tutte le bellezze del nord dell'isola, sarebbe stata necessaria una giornata da 48 ore. E anche la quinta sull'isola di Big Island non è da meno. Ci concentriamo su Hilo e sul versante sud-est dell'isola, quello più selvaggio, nonchè la zona hippie dell'isola. Dimenticatevi hotel, resort, città: chi passa da queste parti è in cerca di tranquillità....

You probably have already noticed reading the post about the previous day, if you wanna visit all the beauties of the north of the island, a 48-hour day would be needed. And also the fifth day on Big Island is not far behind. We would like to focus on Hilo and on the southeast side of the island, the wildest one, as well as the hippie area of the island. Forget about hotels, resorts, cities: those who pass through this area are looking for tranquility ....

IL SUD EST DELL'ISOLA, TRA LAVA E... HIPPIE

Una volta raggiunta Pahoa, considerate almeno tre ore circa per percorrere il loop composto dalla "130", la "132" e la costiera "137", un percorso che tuttavia noi non abbiamo potuto percorrere interamente a causa della lava presente sulla strada. Il primo stop è nel cuore della zona hippie, all'Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmers Market. Al mattino vi attenderà un farmers market dove potrete assaggiare le prelibatezze hawaiane, alcune delle quali davvero strane come il Tulsi, una bevanda alcolica e... ricca di zenzero. Al pomeriggio si aprono le danze: si balla, si canta... e si beve, nel più genuino degli spiriti hippies.

THE SOUTH EAST OF THE ISLAND, BETWEEN LAVA AND ... HIPPIES

Once you get to Pahoa, reckon at least 3 hours for the visit of this area: visitor could, in fact, travels the loop composed of the roads number "130", "132" and the coastal "137", a road that however we haven't been able to travel entirely due to the lava on the road. The first stop is in the heart of the hippie area, at Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmers Market. In the morning there's a small farmers where people can taste Hawaiian delicacies, some of which are really strange like Tulsi, an alcoholic drink ... rich in ginger. In the afternoon it's showtime: dancing, singing ... and drinking, in the most genuine hippies spirits.

La 137, ovvero la Kalapana-Kapoho road, è stupenda. Segue l'andamento della costa sino al punto più a est dell'isola dove ad attendervi, una volta riaperta la strada, troverete il Cape Kumukahi Light (State Hwy 132, Pāhoa, HI 96778, Stati Uniti).

The road 137, called Kalapana-Kapoho road, is gorgeous. It follows the trend of the coast to the easternmost point of the island where, once the road is reopened, visitors will find the Cape Kumukahi Light (State Hwy 132, Pāhoa, HI 96778, United States).

Non mancate di visitare la Kahena Black Sand Beach, il successivo Mackenzie state Recreation area e soprattutto la Pohoiki Black Sand Beach.

Non tanto per la spiaggia nera, comunque interessante, ma perchè qui potrete davvero entrate a stretto contatto con i danni dell'eruzione del 2018. La lava ha completamente danneggiato l'area e ad un certo punto vi troverete davanti a voi un enorme blocco nero: la colata lavica, infatti, vi impedirà di proseguire oltre...

La grande attrazione dell'area è il Lava Tree State Monument (ingresso gratuito) lungo la 132. Nel 1790 un’intera foresta di alberi ohia prese fuoco dopo essere stata travolta dalla lava incandescente. Una volta raffreddatasi, la lava che aveva avvolto i tronchi, assunse la forma di colonne verticali pietrificate. In questo state park, il lava tree loop monument, un trail di 0.7 miglia in loop, vi farà ammirare da vicino questi alberi pietrificati.

The main attraction of the area is the Lava Tree State Monument (free admission) along the road 132. Lava Tree State Monument features a forest of lava trees-lava molds of the tree trunks that were formed when a lava flow swept through the forested area in 1790. In this state park, the lava tree loop monument, a 0.7 mile loop trail, will allow you to admire these petrified trees up very close.

Pahoa è la piccola città di riferimento dell'intera area, dove davvero vi sembrerà di immergervi nel 1960, la generazione dorata degli hippies. Non perdetevi il Maku'u Farmer's Marker la domenica mattina (8-14: Maku'u Farmer's Lot, Keaau-Pahoa Bypass Road, Pahoa), ma soprattutto il pranzo da Paoha Fresh Fish and Chips, un locale spartano che offre un deliziosissimo fish and chips.

Pahoa is the small town of reference of the entire area, where you really feel like immersing yourself in 1960, the golden generation of hippies. Do not miss the Maku'u Farmer's Marker on Sunday morning (8 am - 2 pm: Maku'u Farmer's Lot, Keaau-Pahoa Bypass Road, Pahoa), but above a quick lunch at Paoha Fresh Fish and Chips, a restaurant with a spartan atmosphere that offers a delicious fish and chips.

Risalendo verso nord, gli amanti del caffè potranno visitare la Hilo Cofee Mill (17-995 Volcano Rd, Mountain View) che produce caffè coltivato nella foresta pluviale di Puna, Hamakua e Kau ed offre tour gratuiti della piantagione. Chi invece come noi ama le noci di macadamia non potrà non visitare anche l'altra principale azienda produttrice di questa prelibatezza. Anzi, a dirla tutta, la principale azienda, ovvero la Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory (orari dei tour: 8-17. Indirizzo: 16-701 Macadamia Road, Hilo). Per arrivarci attraverserete una distesa di frutteti lunghi 5 km e vi renderete immediatamente conto di quanto sia importante sull'isola la coltivazione delle noci di macadamia. Big Island, infatti, ospita circa il 90% di tutti gli alberi di macadamia delle Hawaii e dà lavoro ad oltre 4000 persone.

Going north, coffee lovers won't miss the Hilo Cofee Mill (17-995 Volcano Rd, Mountain View) which produces coffee grown in the rainforest of Puna, Hamakua and Kau and offers free tours of the plantation. Those who (like us) love Macadamia nuts will certainly visit the other main company that produces this delicacy. Indeed, to be honest, the main company, the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory (tour hours: 8 am - 5 pm. Address: 16-701 Macadamia Road, Hilo). Visitors have cross a 5 km stretch of orchards to get there and they immediately realize how important the cultivation of macadamia nuts is on the island. Big Island, in fact, is home to about 90% of all Macadamia trees in Hawaii and employs over 4000 people.

COME VISITARE IL PANAEWA RAINFOREST ZOO

Siamo ormai alle porte di Hilo ma, prima di raggiungerla, vi consigliamo uno stop al Panaewa Rainforest Zoo (800 Stainback Hwy, Hilo: ingresso gratuito ma sono apprezzate le donazioni). Difficilmente ci sentirete consigliare la visita ad uno zoo, ma qui gli animali sono davvero coccolati. Dove siamo? In una piccola area di 12 acri, in uno zoo che di fatto è l'unico ad essere situato in una foresta pluviale per quanto riguarda gli Stati Uniti. E' possibile, se volete, anche "adottare" gli animali stessi...

HOW TO VISIT THE PANAEWA RAINFOREST ZOO

We are now at the gates of Hilo but, before reaching it, we recommend a stop at the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo (800 Stainback Hwy, Hilo: admission is free but donations are appreciated). We hardly recommend a visit to a zoo, but here all the animals are truly pampered. Where are we? In a small 12-acre (4.9 ha) zoo which is the only one in the United States located in a rainforest. It is operated by Hawaii County and receives its funding from the county and from private donations.

Al suo interno troverete un'importante varietà di animali tipici della foresta pluviale ed altrettanti tipici delle Hawaii (in via di estinzione) come scimmie, lemuri, oche nene (l'uccello dello stato hawaiano) e oltre 80 altre specie animali tra cui la grande attrazione, la tigre bianca del bengala. Lo zoo di Pana’ewa è anche un giardino botanico ed è pieno di orchidee, bambù, 100 varietà di palme e un giardino acquatico. Un must per i bambini è la fattoria didattica (solo il sabato).

Inside, you can find a variety of rainforest animals and endangered Hawaiian animals such as spider monkeys, lemurs, nene geese (the Hawaiian State bird), and over 80 other animal species. The Pana’ewa zoo is also a botanical garden and is filled with orchids, bamboos, 100 varieties of palms, and a water garden. One must-do for kids is the petting zoo available only on Saturday.

ALLA RICERCA... DELL'ARCOBALENO - LE RAINBOW FALLS

Ad ovest di Hilo spicca una cascata incredibile. Non tanto per la sua potenza o la maestosità, ma per il fatto che, se visitate nel momento giusto della giornata, tale cascata è costantemente accompagnata dall'arcobaleno, un'altra delle icone hawaiiane. Non a caso il loro nome è Rainbow Falls, all'interno del più grande Wailuku River State Park (2 Rainbow Drive, Hilo. Ingresso gratuito).

IN SEARCH OF... RAINBOW - THE RAINBOW FALLS

To the west of Hilo stands an incredible waterfall. Not so much for its power or majesty (80 ft), but for the fact that, if you visit it at the right time of day, this waterfall is constantly accompanied by the rainbow, another of the Hawaiian icons. It is no coincidence that its name is Rainbow Falls, inside the largest Wailuku River State Park (2 Rainbow Drive, Hilo. Free admission).

Quando visitare le Rainbow Falls? Al mattino presto o nel tardo pomeriggio quando le colonne d’acqua, che si tuffano in un laghetto, sono attraversati da numerosi arcobaleni. Il nome hawaiiano delle Rainbow Falls è "Waiānuenue". A poca distanza dalle Rainbow Falls (1.5 miglia) e qualora non foste in ritardo nella vostra tabella di marcia, potrete effettuare un veloce stop anche alle Pe'epe'e Falls, meno belle e di conseguenza meno visitate rispetto alle cascate arcobaleno (99 Peepee Falls Road, Off Kaumana Drive, Hilo).

When to visit the Rainbow Falls? In the early morning or late afternoon. You can only see a rainbows that is caused by sunlight when you are standing with your back towards the sun. This is because rainbows are caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets. The Hawaiian name of the Rainbow Falls is "Waiānuenue". A short distance from the Rainbow Falls (1.5 miles) and only if you are not late in your roadmap, make a quick stop at the Pe'epe'e Falls, less beautiful and consequently less visited than the Rainbow Falls (99 Peepee Falls Road, Off Kaumana Drive, Hilo).

LO SPETTACOLO NATURALE PIU' BELLO DI BIG ISLAND, LE AKAKA FALLS

Hawaii significa natura selvaggia ed anche Big Island non poteva essere da meno. Uno degli spettacoli più belli dell'isola sono le Akaka Falls, all'interno dell'Akaka Falls State Park (ingresso: 5 dollari a vettura. Indirizzo: End of Akaka Falls Road, Off Hwy 220, Hilo), situate a nord ovest di Hilo. Un sentiero breve e circolare, chiamato Akala Falls Loop Trail (0.4 miglia) permette di avvicinarsi a queste maestose cascate, considerate le più belle dello stato. A metà del tragitto, una piccola deviazione conduce ad un piccolo view point che si affaccia sulle cascate Kahuna.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NATURAL SHOW IN BIG ISLAND, THE AKAKA FALLS
Hawaii means wild nature and even Big Island could not any less. One of the most beautiful shows on the island are the Akaka Falls, within the Akaka Falls State Park (admission: $ 5 per car. Address: End of Akaka Falls Road, Off Hwy 220, Hilo), located northwest of Hilo. A short loop trail called the Akala Falls Loop Trail (0.4 miles) allows you to get close to these majestic waterfalls, which are the most beautiful in the state. In the middle of the trail, a quick detour leads to a small view point overlooking the Kahuna falls.

LA PEPEEKO SCENIC DRIVE E L'AFFASCINANTE DONKEY TRAIL

Rientrando dall'Akaka Falls State Park, vi consigliamo, prima di raggiungere definitivamente Hilo, dimenticatevi per un attimo della Mamaloa Highway e percorrete la scenografica Old Mamaloa Highway, conosciuta anche come Pepeekeo Scenic Drive. E' una deviazione di sole 6 miglia dalla strada principale che vi porterà ad attraversare ruscelli, giungle, l'incantevole villaggio di Papa'ikou, il bellissimo Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (20 dollari) ed un incredibile fiume, la cui acqua sembra fluire da un tubo di lava.

PEPEEKO SCENIC DRIVE AND THE FASCINATING DONKEY TRAIL

Coming back from Akaka Falls State Park and before finally reaching Hilo, we suggest you to skip the Mamaloa Highway and take the scenic Old Mamaloa Highway, also known as Pepeekeo Scenic Drive. It is a 6 miles detour from the main road that leads visitors to streams, jungles, the enchanting village of Papa'ikou, the beautiful Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (admission: 20 dollars) and to an incredible river, whose water seems to flow from a lava tube.

Ma, ciò che ci è piaciuto maggiormente di questa piccola deviazione, è stata la bellissima baia di Onomea, che nell'800 era un villaggio con un porto e nel 900 aveva anche ospitato un grande zuccherificio. Qui abbiamo percorso le 1.2 miglia round trip del Donkey Trail, un trail non semplice tra trovare ma che saprà regalarvi grandi soddisfazioni. Avrete due possibilità per il parcheggio, visto che non esistono lungo questa strada aree di parcheggio designate.

But, what we liked most about this small detour, was the beautiful bay of Onomea, which in the 19th century was a village with a port and in the 20th century also hosted a large sugar factory. Here we hiked the Donkey Trail (1.2 miles round trip), a trail which is not so easy to find but that definitely fives great rewards. There are two parking options, as there are no designated parking areas along this road.

Se arrivate da nord, lasciate la vostra vettura nei pochissimi spazi disponibili (sulla sinistra) prima di raggiungere il parcheggio del Botanical Garden (destinato solo ai possessori del ticket per il giardino botanico), se arrivate invece da sud parcheggiate lungo la strada (destra) circa 500 metri prima di raggiungere il giardino. Se comincerete il trail dal versante sud, la prima parte sarà interamente in discesa (sentiero asfaltato) fino al litorale di Onomea Bay.

If you are coming from the north, leave your car in the very few spaces available (on the left) before reaching the parking lot of the Botanical Garden (available only for the botanical garden ticket holders). If you're coming from the south, just leave your car along the road (on the right) about 500 meters before reaching the gardens. If you start the trail from the south side, the first part is entirely downhill (paved path) to the coast of Onomea Bay.

Alla fine del sentiero asfaltato un piccolo ruscello d'acqua dolce sfocia nell'oceano: goditi l'incredibile panorama della baia. Poco prima avrai incrociato il trail del botanical garden, al quale non potrai accedere senza il regolare biglietto. Prima della risalita, dovrai attraversare il ruscello e bagnarti, altrimenti dovrai tornare sui tuoi passi e risalire da dove sei arrivato. Se invece sceglierai di proseguire, risalirai fino alla strada e la seguirai dal parcheggio del Botanical Garden sino all'inizio del sentiero per circa 500 metri.

At the end of the paved path, a small freshwater stream flows into the ocean: enjoy the incredible panorama of the bay. Shortly before, you have just crossed the botanical garden trail, which you will not be able to hike without the regular ticket. Before the ascent, cross the stream and get wet, otherwise retrace your steps and go back to where you came from. If you choose to continue, follow the trail till you get to the road again: it takes about 5 minutes to get from the Botanical Garden parking lot to the beginning of the trail.

COSA VEDERE A HILO? DOWNTOWN E LILI'UOKALANI PARK AND GARDENS
Siamo finalmente a Hilo, dove piove per ben 278 giorni all'anno ma solamente di notte, stando almeno agli abitanti. Un tour a piedi di Hilo e del suo downtown non può non cominciare dalla lunghissima ed enorme Kamehameha Avenue, di fronte alla bellissima Hilo Bay, tra negozi e ristoranti, gallerie d'arte e musei, ma anche edifici importanti come il Palace Theatre costruito nel 1925 e l'Hilo Farmers Market, che è aperto tutti i giorni sino alle 16. I due musei più apprezzati sono certamente il Pacific Tsunami Museum racconta le catastrofi naturali catastrofiche del 1946 e del 1960 e la Lyman Mission House & Museum, una casa costruita nel 1839 da missionari cristiani americani.

WHAT TO SEE IN HILO? DOWNTOWN AND LILI'UOKALANI PARK AND GARDENS
We are finally in Hilo, where it rains for 278 days a year but only at night, according to the inhabitants at least. A walking tour of Hilo and its downtown should start from the very long and huge Kamehameha Avenue, in front of the beautiful Hilo Bay, between shops and restaurants, art galleries and museums, but also important buildings such as the Palace Theater, built in 1925, and the Hilo Farmers Market, which is open every day until 4 pm. The two most popular museums are certainly the Pacific Tsunami Museum which tells of the catastrophic natural disasters of 1946 and 1960 and the Lyman Mission House & Museum, a house built in 1839 by American Christian missionaries.

Ma la grande attrazione di downtown Hilo è certamente Liliʻuokalani Park and Gardens, caratterizzato da bellissimi giardini giapponesi fortemente voluti da tre donne nel 1907. All'interno dei giardini troverete elementi tipici del giardino giapponese come un laghetto, ponti, stagni, statue etc. Il ponte pedonale vi permetterà di raggiungere Coconut Island da dove ammirare il lungomare ed autentico rifugio degli abitanti di Hilo.

But the main attraction of downtown Hilo is certainly the Liliʻuokalani Park and Gardens, characterized by beautiful Japanese gardens strongly desired by three women in 1907. Inside the gardens you will find typical elements of the Japanese garden such as a pond, bridges, statues etc. The pedestrian bridge will allow you to reach Coconut Island from where you can admire the waterfront. It's an authentic refuge for the inhabitants of Hilo.

Le spiagge qui non sono molte, le migliori le troverete a sud della città. Su tutte spicca quella del Kealoha Beach Park Hilo. L'acqua è splendida ma non esiste sabbia. Per questo consigliamo di indossare adatte all'acqua.

There aren't many beaches around Hilo. The best one are located south of the city. Above all, that of Kealoha Beach Park Hilo is the one we definitely recommend. The water is crystal clear but there is no sand. For this reason we recommend wearing water shoes.
