Hilo will be the starting point for exploring the island for the last two days on Big Island. The leitmotiv is always the same: we'll need to wake up very early in the morning because all the trip's stages are very long in relation to where we are (today's stage is 300 km) and there are, as usual, many, many things to see and do in Big Island. So, just like us, leave Hilo very early and immerse yourself into the east coast of Big Island, then head to the deep north and at the end flank the two great peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.

LA SCENOGRAFICA HAWAII BELT ROAD E... I MIGLIORI COOKIES DI SEMPRE
La Hawaii Belt road, conosciuta come Mamaloa Highway o Highway 19 vale da sola il prezzo del biglietto. E' la strada che collega Hilo con Waimea attraverso la costa: qui piove parecchio e la natura regna incontrastata. Il primo imperdibile stop è a una trentina di miglia a nord di Hilo, in una bakery davvero d'altri tempi, quella di Donna's Cookies (42-1019 Hawaii Belt Rd, Paauilo).
THE SCENIC HAWAII BELT ROAD AND ... THE BEST COOKIES EVER
The Hawaii Belt road, known as Mamaloa Highway or Highway 19 alone is worth the trip to the north-east of Big Island. It is the road that joins the towns of Hilo and Waimea across the coast: it rains a lot and nature reigns. The first unmissable stop is about thirty miles north of Hilo, in a truly old-time bakery, that of Donna's Cookies (42-1019 Hawaii Belt Rd, Paauilo).

Entrando nella bakery non troverete il classico shop bensì una vera piccola cucina dove vengono preparati i cookies semplicemente più buoni delle Hawaii. Li troverete al gusto di biscotto al burro-scozzese, stracciatella, noce di macadamia, burro di arachidi, canditi, mandorla cinese, farina d'avena, uvetta, cereali e noce di cocco. Non fatevi intimorire dall'aspetto spartano, le signore che lavorano all'interno della bakery saranno gentilissime e vi offriranno anche qualche taste (orari di apertura: dal lunedì al venerdì sino alle ore 13).
While entering the bakery, you will not find the typical shop but a real small kitchen where the best Hawaiian cookies are prepared. There are many flavors: shortbread, chocolate Chip, macadamia nut, peanut butter, candied sprinkles, Chinese almond, oatmeal, raisins, corn flake and coconut. Do not be intimidated by the fact that this bakery is spartan in its appearance: the ladies who work there are very kind and will probably also offer you some tastes (hours of operation: Monday to Friday until 1 pm).

La cittadina di Honokaa rappresenta il primo baluardo di civiltà dopo lungo tempo. Gli amanti del cioccolato non mancheranno di visitare la Honoka'a Chocolate Co at Kahi Mau Farm, una farm specializzata soprattutto nella produzione di cioccolato (orari di apertura: dalle 14 alle 16 tranne la domenica).
The town of Honokaa represents the first outpost of civilisation after a long time. Chocolate lovers will certainly not miss the Honoka'a Chocolate Co at Kahi Mau Farm, which carefully handcrafts bean-to-bar chocolate from their picturesque farm on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island (hours of operation: from 2 pm to 4 pm except on Sundays).

Ma, solitamente, chi si spinge sino a qui è perché sta per proseguire dritto dopo aver attraversato la città, spingendosi sino al Waipi'o Valley Lookout, nel cuore dell'omonima valle. Qui la strada s'interrompe e la civiltà lascia interamente spazio alla natura. Dal parcheggio, una brevissima passeggiata conduce al Lookout: dalla terrazza si gode una fantastica vista della valle sottostante.
But, usually, whoever goes this far, he does so because he is going to go straight after crossing the city: he just wants to get to the Waipi'o Valley Lookout, in the heart of the homonymous valley. Here the road ends and civilization gives way entirely to nature. From the parkimg lot, a very short walk leads to the Lookout: from the terrace visitors can enjoy a fantastic view of the valley below.

Se doveste avere più tempo a disposizione, la ripidissima discesa (in un solo miglio si scende di 900 metri, per cui la risalita sarà tremenda!) conduce alle Hilawe Falls, semplicemente quelle che un tempo erano le cascate più alte delle Hawaii. A seconda di a chi lo chiediate, gli abitanti del luogo vi risponderanno che sono alte da 365 metri a 480 metri. Le cascate si trovano all'interno di una proprietà privata e non sono così facilmente visitabili: il nostro consiglio è di chiedere informazioni al ranger che troverete al parcheggio del Waipi'o Valley Lookout. Sulla via del ritorno fermatevi al Lilinoe Fruit Stand per gustarvi il favoloso e cocco (e l'acqua di cocco) hawaiiano.
If you have a little more time available, the very steep descent leads to Hilawe Falls, simply the former highest waterfalls in Hawaii. Depending on who you ask, the locals will reply that they are from 365 meters to 480 meters high. Even though the road is paved, it is steep enough to require four-wheel drive to ensure the brakes don’t fail and to help with the traction on the slippery surface of the road. It's definitely better if you get ther by walk! The waterfalls are located on a private property and it's really not so easy to get there: our advice is, once you get to the Waipi'o Valley Lookout Parking Lot, to ask the ranger for information and directions. On the way back, stop at the Lilinoe Fruit Stand to enjoy the fabulous Hawaiian coconut (and coconut water).

WAIMEA, LA TERRA DEI COWBOYS HAWAIIANI E DEGLI HIGHLANDER SCOZZESI
No, le Hawaii non sono soltanto spiaggia, mare e natura incontaminata. A Big Island, ma non solo qui, sono diversi i territori ancorati all'allevamento del bestiame e su tutti spiccano quelli a ridosso della bella Waimea, rinomata per i suoi ristoranti e per i centri commerciali. Ma la sua anima è quella dei cowboys e non c'è posto migliore alle Hawaii per una passeggiata a cavallo di qualche ora o anche di intere giornate, avventurandosi nel cuore della valle. I due ranch più famosi che effettuano questo tipo di escursioni sono la Paniolo Adventures ed la Dahana Ranch.
WAIMEA, THE LAND OF HAWAIIAN COWBOYS AND SCOTLAND HIGHLANDERS
No, Hawaii is not just beaches, sea and unspoiled nature. On Big Island, but not only, there are several territories anchored to cattle breeding: above all, those located around the beautiful Waimea, which is renowned for its restaurants and shopping centers. But its soul is that of cowboys and there is no better place in Hawaii for a horseback ride (morning rides, afternoon rides, sunset rides...), venturing into the heart of the valley. The two most famous ranches that offer this type of excursion are the Paniolo Adventures and the Dahana Ranch.

Qui a Waimea potrete visitare diversi farmers market: il Kamuela Farmers Market (sabato dalle 7.30 alle 13, il Waimea Town Market (sabato dalle 7.30 alle 12), il Waimea Homestead Farmers Market (sabato dalle 7 alle 12) ed il Waimea Midweek Farmers Market (mercoledì dalle 9 alle 14), ma soprattutto spendere un po' di tempo al ranch più famoso dell'isola, l'immenso Parker Ranch, situato pochi km a sud-ovest della città (66-1304 Mamalahoa Hwy, Waimea). Il ranch fu fondato da un uomo del Massachusetts, John Palmer Parker, che giunse alle Hawaii nel 1809 e fu addirittura incaricato dal re Kamehameha di controllare i capi di bestiame allo stato brado. Da lì a poco, tale terra diventò il ranch più grande di tutti gli Stati Uniti e produttore di 4530 tonnellate di carne all'anno. All'interno del ranch potrete ammirare pezzi della collezione d'arte privata e l'antica casa originaria del ranch.
Here in Waimea you may stop by several farmers markets: the Kamuela Farmers Market (Saturday from 7.30 am to 1 pm, the Waimea Town Market (Saturday from 7.30 am to 12 pm), the Waimea Homestead Farmers Market (Saturday from 7 am to 12 pm) and the Waimea Midweek Farmers Market (Wednesday from 9 am to 2 pm), but above all you may spend some quality time at the most famous ranch on the island, the immense Parker Ranch, located a few km south-west of the city (66-1304 Mamalahoa Hwy, Waimea). The ranch was founded by a Massachusetts man, John Palmer Parker, who arrived in Hawaii in 1809 and was even commissioned by King Kamehameha to check cattle in the wild. Soon, this land became the largest ranch of all the United States and producer of 4530 tons of meat per year. While visiting the ranch visitors can admire pieces from the private art collection and the original ranch house.
Dopo la foresta pluviale, i grandi ranch ed una delle cittadine più iconiche dell'isola, la svolta a destra lungo la Kohala Mountain Road vi condurrà nuovamente in un'altra dimensione: vi sembrerà davvero di essere in Scozia. Nel passato, infatti, diversi scozzesi si sono insediati qui per controllare le piantagioni di zucchero e la zona prese il nome di “scottish coast”.
After the rainforest, the huge ranches and one of the most iconic towns on the island, the right turn along the Kohala Mountain Road will take visitors back to another dimension: you will really seem to be in Scotland. In the past, in fact, several Scots settled there to control sugar plantations and the area took the name of "Scottish coast".

LA VALLE PIU' BELLA: ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA POLOLU VALLEY
Praterie e ranch a non finire aprono le porte a profondo nord dell'isola. Una svolta a destra lungo la Hawi-Niulii Road (270) vi condurrà nella piccola cittadina di Kapaau, dove svetta la statua di re Kamehameha.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VALLEY: DISCOVERING THE POLOLU VALLEY
Endless grasslands and ranches open the doors to the deep north of the island. A right turn along Hawi-Niulii Road (270) will lead you to the small town of Kapaau, where the statue of King Kamehameha stands.

La strada, conosciuta anche come Akoni pule Highway, ha come meta conclusiva il la bellissima Pololu Valley dove, ancora una volta, la civiltà dà spazio alla natura. Dal Pololu Valley Lookout in poi non troverete né abitazioni, nè strade. Una lunga serie di scogliere segna l’inizio di Hamakua Coast e del bellissimo Pololu Valley Trail (1.4 km), un percorso in discesa (il ritorno, ovviamente, sarà in salita e quindi ben più faticoso) che conduce ad una immensa spiaggia nera.
The road, also known as Akoni pule Highway, has the beautiful Pololu Valley as its final destination. Here, once once again, civilization gives way to nature. From the Pololu Valley Lookout onwards there are neither houses nor roads. A long series of cliffs marks the beginning of Hamakua Coast and the beautiful Pololu Valley Trail (1.4 km), a downhill trail (the return, of course, will be uphill and therefore much more demanding) which leads to an immense black beach.

Il trail è piuttosto semplice, ma dovrete prestare attenzione al fondo sconnesso. Ad ogni curva si aprirà davanti a voi una splendida vista sulla valle e sul mare.
The trail is quite simple, but you will have to pay attention to the rough terrain. At every turn, a splendid view of the valley and the ocean opens in front of you.
TRA STORIA E NOCI DI MACADAMIA...
Il verde lussureggiante d'ora in poi lascia spazio ai territori aridissimi (e caldissimi) del versante occidentale del nord dell'isola, fatto di storia, national monument, parchi statali e, al termine della Akoni Pule Highway, anche di grandi resort che popolano l'area di Kohala. Gli amanti della storia hawaiiana troveranno pane per i loro denti sia al Lapakahi State Historical Park che poi al Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site. Il Lapakahi State Historical Park (ingresso gratuito), vi permetterà grazie ad un percorso di circa 0.75 km di esplorare l'antico villaggio di pescatori, consentendo di immaginare quali fossero le difficoltà degli abitanti del villaggio vissuti circa 700 anni fa. Potrete anche sperimentare i giochi hawaiiani seguendo le spiegazioni che si trovano al visitor center.
BETWEEN HISTORY AND MACADAMIA NUTS ...
From now on, the lush green from gives way to the very dry (and very hot) territories of the western side of the north of the island that are made of history, national monuments, state parks and, at the end of the Akoni Pule Highway, also of large resorts that populate the Kohala area. Lovers of Hawaiian history will get their teeth at the Lapakahi State Historical Park and then at the Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site. The Lapakahi State Historical Park (free admission) allows visitors, thanks to a a 0.75 km trail, to explore the ancient fishing village: you'll be able to imagine what the difficulties were in this village more than 700 years ago. Visitors can also experience Hawaiian games by following the explanations found at the visitor center.

Il Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (ingresso gratuito) custodisce le rovine dell'ultimo tempio hawaiano antico e altri siti storici di grande rilevanza per l'isola. Non tutte le aree del parco sono visitabili, poichè alcuni studi hanno dimostrato che, proprio in quella zona, sia ancora possibile trovare reperti e ossa non ancora rinvenuti durante gli scavi precedentemente effettuati. Annesso al parco c'è lo Spencer Beach Park, dove potrete rilassarvi dopo l'esplorazione dei due parchi.
The Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (free admission) houses the ruins of the last ancient Hawaiian temple and other historical sites of great significance for the island and its people. Not all the park areas can be visited, as some studies have shown that it is still possible to discover geological finds and bones not yet found. Limked to the park, there's the Spencer Beach Park, where you can relax and swim after exploring the two parks.

When it comes to Big Island, in addition to beer and coffee, it is impossible not to refer to the macadamia nuts: the island is one of the main producer in the world. Needless to say we felt in love with them, so much so we visited the two main companies producing one of the Hawaiian icons: at this time we stopped by the less famous, but undoubtedly more beautiful macadamia nus factory (as often happens), the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory (61- 3251 Maluokalani St, Waimea - opening hours: 9 am to 5.30 pm).

I DUE "MOSTRI SACRI" DI BIG ISLAND
ALLA SCOPERTA DEL MAUNA KEA E DEL MAUNA LOA
La strada che vi riporterà ad Hilo attraversa due "mostri sacri" dell'isola hawaiiana. Qui vi troverete davvero sopra le nuvole e sono in tanti che sfidano il freddo e la pioggia per ammirare da posizione privilegiata il tramonto. Noi non li abbiamo visitati, proprio perchè faceva molto freddo, ma anche e soprattutto perchè era in corso una protesta, ma una visita di Big Island non può definirsi completa senza aver reso omaggio al Mauna Loa ed al Mauna Kea, situati rispettivamente a destra e sinistra della Saddle Road se state provenendo da est. Il Mauna Loa, alto ben 4170 metri, è il massiccio montuoso più esteso della terra ed il suo nome significa appunto "lunga montagna". La caldera posta alla sua sommità misura quasi 5 km di lunghezza e 183 metri di profondità. Il vulcano ha eruttato 37 volte dal 1832, l’ultima delle quali nel 1984. Con la vostra auto potrete spingervi sino ai 2039 metri percorrendo la Mauna Loa Road: in 17.5 miglia la strada asfaltata (percorribile da qualsiasi vettura seppur molto stretta) conduce all'osservatorio dove non troverete alcun visitor center ad attendervi, ma un paesaggio lunare fatto di colate laviche.
THE TWO "GIANTS" OF BIG ISLAND
DISCOVERING THE MAUNA KEA AND MAUNA LOA
The road that will bring you back to Hilo crosses two "giants" of Big Island. Here you really are above the clouds. Many people defy cold and rain to admire the sunset from a privileged position. We did not visit them, precisely because it was very cold, and also because there was a protest was underway, but a visit to Big Island cannot, however, be properly called complete without a trip to Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, located respectively on the right and left of Saddle Road if you are coming from the east. The Mauna Loa, 4170 meters high, is the largest mountain range on earth and its name means "long mountain". The caldera at the top measures almost 5 km in length and 183 meters in depth. The volcano has erupted 37 times since 1832, the last one in 1984. If you're driving your car, you can drive a paved road called Mauna Loa Road (17.5 miles) till the observatory, located at 2039 meters above the sea level. There's no visitor center waiting for you, but a lunar landscape made of lava flows.

Se il Mauna Loa è il più grande massiccio montuoso, dall'altra parte della strada troverete il più alto, il Mauna Kea: se ai 4207 metri di altezza aggiungiamo i 5993 sotto la superficie, il Mauna Kea, totalizzando 9995 metri è, infatti, più alto anche dell’Everest. Il suo nome significa “montagna bianca”, dal momento che la sua cima è sempre innevata e, a differenza del Mauna Loa, il Mauna Kea è inattivo da 3500 anni. All'Onizuka Center For International Astronomy 11 astronomi provenienti da tutto il mondo hanno posizionato i loro telescopi, incluso il più grande al mondo, il keck telescope: per arrivarci dovrete percorrere i 9 km della Mauna Kea Access Road (consigliamo un auto a quattro ruote motrici).
If the Mauna Loa is the largest mountain range, on the other side of the road you will find the highest, the Mauna Kea: Its peak is 4,207 m (13,803 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the volcano is underwater, and when measured from its underwater base, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring 10,200 m. Its name means "white mountain", since its summit is always covered with snow and, unlike Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea has been inactive for 3500 years. 11 astronomers from all over the world have positioned their telescopes at the Onizuka Center For International Astronomy, including the largest in the world, the keck telescope: if you want to get there, travel the 9 km of the Mauna Kea Access Road (we recommend a four-car driving wheels).
