Euro 2013 championship: Israel (part 1, Tel Aviv)

Lo so, non si dovrebbe raccontare il viaggio in Israele perchè solamente uno dei due "bau" era presente (Marco), ma erano davvero troppi gli elementi per cui ci è sembrato giusto parlare anche della settimana spesa tra Tel Aviv e dintorni, in un luogo, Israele, tra i più controversi, particolari, se vogliamo anche strani, ma soprattutto affascinanti al mondo...

We know that we should not tell about the trip to Israel because only one of the two "bau" was there Marco), but there are really too many things to say so it seems right to speak about the week spent in a place, Israel, one of the most controversial, special, even weird, but also fascinating in the world ... 

Ma andiamo con ordine, perchè Israele? La premessa è che mai mi sarei immaginato di finirci, essendo i paesi del medio oriente (o sud est europeo, fate voi) una meta che non mi ha mai affascinato più di tanto. Fortunatamente è arrivata la "convocazione" da parte del fratellino che ha voluto la famiglia (o almeno chi ha potuto venire e quindi io, la mamma, la fidanzata Marija e l'amicone "Potat") con sé per l'avventura agli Europei Under 21 (maggio-giugno 2013) con la nazionale azzurrra di Devis Mangia. Ho deciso di parlare di questa settimana spesa in Israele perchè, con mia vivissima sorpresa, ho realizzato che sono tantissimi gli italiani che visitano questo paese. In pellegrinaggio o in vacanza. Potrebbe dunque essere motivo di spunto per qualcuno che volesse intraprendere l'avventura verso questa terra...

Why Israel? The first thing to say is that i don't countries of the middle east (or southeast European) and i would never been there without Luca's call (my brother) that wanted his family close ho him for the important European Under 21 soccer Championship held in Tel Aviv (may-june, 2013). I decided to talk about the week spent in Israel because, with my surprise, I realized that many Italians visit this country. On pilgrimage or on vacation. It may therefore be a source of inspiration for anyone who wants to go to this land ... 

Va però detto che, per la prima volta, non ho dovuto organizzare il viaggio: le tre escursioni erano già stabilite (effettuate con tutto il grande gruppo dei parenti) e, senza l'assillo dell'organizzazione, il viaggio è stato molto "take it easy", senza preoccuparmi più di tanto del dove/come/quando e perchè delle cose. Spiaggia, mare e partite nei giorni "free" e tre escursioni una più bella dell'altra.

It should be said that, for the first time, I did not organize the trip: the three excursions were already established (and done with the whole large group of relatives). The trip was very "take it easy " for me, without worrying too much about where / how / when and why of things. Beach, sea and soccer matches in the "free" days, and three amazing excursions in the other days.

Tel Aviv è sorprendente. E' una città completamente diversa dal resto d'Israele ed in particolare da Gerusalemme. E non soltanto per il mare e l'aria vacanziera che si respira al suo interno. Tel Aviv è la città dei giovani, del divertimento, dello sport praticato anche di notte sulla spiaggia, o ancora il luogo in cui le ragazze possono tranquillamente passeggiare sul lungo mare anche in orari notturni senza temere alcunché. Vi è inoltre una forte comunità gay... insomma, concettualmente molto lontani da Gerusalemme che pure dista meno di 70 chilometri.

Tel Aviv is amazing. It 'a completely different city from the rest of Israel, and especially Jerusalem. And not just for the "vacation air" you breathe inside this area. Tel Aviv is the city of youth, entertainment, sport played at night on the beach, or where girls can walk along the beach also at night without fear. There is also a strong gay community ... well, conceptually very distant from Jerusalem, which is  less than 50 miles far.

soprattutto se si è di buon umore dopo la partita...

especially if you are in a good mood after the match...

Tel Aviv, o almeno l'area costiera della città (dove abbiamo soggiornato), può sostanzialmente essere suddivisa in tre sezioni. Quella del porto (nord), dove ristoranti e locali notturni la fanno da padrone, quella centrale dei grandi alberghi, delle spiagge e del divertimento e quella di Jaffa (sud), ovvero la città vecchia. Sia Jaffa che il porto sono raggiungibili dalle spiagge con una camminata di una ventina di minuti. (continua...)

Tel Aviv, or at least the coastal area of the city (where we stayed), can basically be divided into three sections. The harbor one (north), where there are a lot of restaurants and nightclubs, the middle one, with huge hotels, beaches and entertainment, and the last one, called Jaffa (south), or the old town. Both Jaffa and the port are accessible from the beach with a walk of about twenty minutes. (to be continued. ..)

Euro 2013 championship: Israel (part 2, Tel Aviv)

Ci eravamo lasciati sul lungomare di Tel Aviv: siamo a giugno, i primi di giugno, dello scorso anno. Raccontavo delle tre aree della zona costiera della città, la più interessante a livello storico è sicuramente Jaffa, la città vecchia, raggiungibile con una camminata (sul lungomare) di una mezz'oretta buona da dove soggiornavamo.

I left you on the waterfront of Tel Aviv: it's June, the first days of June, of 2013. I was talking about the three areas of the coastal zone of the city, the most interesting (historical) is definitely Jaffa, the old town, reached by a walk (on the waterfront) for a good half an hour from we where were staying.

non a caso le principali immagini che esaltano la città vengono spesso e volentieri scattate da questa posizione. E non mancheranno neppure ristorantini che vi consentiranno di cenare con la splendida visuale sulla vicina Tel Aviv.

It's not a coincidence that the main pictures about the city are often taken from this location. And there are even restaurants that allow you to dine with the beautiful view of the nearby Tel Aviv 

Se a sud, con Jaffa, il clima è più sobrio, a nord, nella zona portuale, è sostanzialmente "fiesta" ad ogni ora. Negozi, bar, pub, ristoranti e discoteche a pochi metri dal mare, l'ideale per coloro i quali vogliano divertirsi (anche qui non c'è bisogno di Taxi, basta una camminata di una ventina di minuti sul lungomare).

If in the south, in Jaffa, people are more calm, in the north (port area), is basically "fiesta" at any time. Shops, bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs just a few meters from the sea, ideal for those who want to have fun (even here there is no need to take a taxi, just a walk of about twenty minutes on the waterfront). 

Siamo anche fortunati, perchè il mister "regala" una serata libera alla squadra e riusciamo a cenare con loro.

We are also fortunate, because the coach gives a free evening to the team and we can have dinner with them. 

E il mare? Saranno in tanti, immagino, a porsi questa domanda. Già a giugno la temperatura supera i 30 gradi, il mare anche se non sempre calmo è caldo e il "diventare rosso-peperone" dopo sole un paio d'ore in spiaggia è scontato, scontatissimo.

And the sea? I suppose many of you are wondering about that. Even in June the temperature exceeds 30 degrees, the sea is not always calm, but it's always warm. You'll become "red-pepper" after only a couple of hours at the beach...

La seconda domanda che probabilmente vi starete ponendo è legata ai "pericoli" nel visitare un paese comunque sempre a rischio. La risposta è che non ce ne sono, se non in particolari momenti storici di tensione che ogni tanto purtroppo accadono. E' vero, troverete spesso zone autonome (lo racconterò parlando delle escursioni) con militari che effettuano i controlli del caso, ma nulla di sconvolgente. I controlli, quelli sì pesanti, spesso lunghissimi e con domande più o meno incalzanti, ve li dovrete subire in aereoporto sia in sede di partenza che di arrivo. Sarà l'unica scocciatura della vostra vacanza.

The second question you're probably asking is about the "dangers" of visiting a country that is always at risk. The answer is that there is no danger, except in particular historical moments of tension that occasionally unfortunatley happen. It 's true, you'll often find autonomous zones with soldiers who check everything, but nothing shocking. The controls, the heavy ones, often long and with insistent questions, you'll face at the airport. It will be the only nuisance of your holiday.

Euro 2013 championship: Israel (part 3, Galilea)

La prima delle tre escursioni in ordine temporale, se vogliamo la meno eccitante tra quelle effettuate (ma comunque molto, molto bella), ci ha portato in Galilea, regione storica della Palestina oggi divisa amministrativamente tra Israele e Cisgiordania. Un'intera giornata dedicata alla visita della Galilea ed i luoghi evangelici, attraverso la valle del Giordano, il Lago di Tiberiade ed i luoghi sacri al Cristianesimo: Carfanao, Monte delle Beatitudini e Tabga. Ma non solo, anche il luogo della Moltiplicazione dei pani e dei pesci e Degania, primo kibbutz che celebra i 100 anni della fondazione.

The first of three excursions in chronological order, the less exciting but still very, very nice led us to Galilee, to the historic region of Palestine today administratively divided between Israel and the Jordan A whole day dedicated to the visit of Galilee and evangelical places through the valley of the Jordan River, Lake Tiberias and the sacred places of Christianity like Carfanao , Mount of Beatitudes and Tabgha. But not only that, also the site of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes and Degania , the first kibbutz, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the foundation.

Sono tantissimi gli italiani che troviamo, come tantissimi sono i pulman di pellegrini che affrontano questo emozionante percorso, strettamente legato alla religione. Il secondo step è il luogo dove Gesù moltiplicò i pani e i pesci...

There are a lot of italians. And mny are buses of pilgrims who face this exciting journey, closely linked to religion. The second step is the place where Jesus multiplied loaves and fishes ...

e riusciamo anche a vedere il luogo esatto dove avvenne.

e ancora Capharnaum (la città di Gesù) riempiranno mattinata e prima parte del pomeriggio. Tutti luoghi che, religiosi o meno, non possono lasciare indifferenti.

Finita? Macchè. Non siamo lontani dal confine con la Giordania (al di là del lago)

Non so se più incredibile l'atmosfera che si respira o l'enorme quantità di pescegatti che domina il fiume.

Euro 2013 championship: Israel (part 4, Gerusalemme)

Archiviata la Galilea ci tuffiamo su Gerusalemme. La seconda delle tre escursioni prevede, infatti, un'intera giornata spesa nella "Città Santa", una tappa non lunghissima a livello chilometrico (poco meno di un centinaio di chilometri), ma densa di significato. Perchè Tel Aviv è una cosa, Gerusalemme un'altra... La prima sosta è al complesso dello Yad Vashem, il memoriale ai 6 milioni di vittime dell'Olocausto. Un museo nel quale è possibile ricevere testimonianze, consultare video e foto sull'Olocausto, ma anche documenti sulla dittatura nazista, sui 12 anni di persecuzioni e sugli avvenimenti postbellici precedenti la nascita dello stato di Israele (ingresso gratuito).

After da day spent in Galilee, now it's Jerusalem time . The second of three excursions lead us the " Holy City" , a stage not very long  (less than a hundred kilometers ), but full of meaning. Because. The first stop is the complex of Yad Vashem, the memorial to the six million victims of the Holocaust. A museum where you can get testimonials, see videos and photos about the Holocaust , but also documents about the Nazi dictatorship ( free admission).

Che dire? Dopo aver visitato anche un campo di concentramento (Dachau) posso dire di aver completato il cerchio. Perchè se è vero che le emozioni che ti può dare un campo di concentramento è mille volte superiore a quello di un museo, è anche vero che un luogo di ricordo costruito in quella che è la casa dell'ebraismo è altrettanto toccante.

What can I say ? After visiting a concentration camp ( Dachau ) I can say that my circle is completed. It is true that the emotions that a concentration camp gives to you is a thousand times greater than a museum, but it is also true that a place of memory built in the home of Judaism is also touching.

La parte dedicata ai bambini, con un percorso al buio (con tante stelline illuminate) ed una voce registrata che elenca tutti i nomi dei caduti difficilmente la dimenticherò. All'esterno scorgiamo anche un albero dedicato a Schindler (poco lontano c'è anche la sua tomba). Parliamo ovviamente dell'imprenditore tedesco Oscar Schindler che salvò 1100 ebrei durante il periodo nazista. Qualcuno di voi ricorderà anche il film Schindler's list.

The part dedicated to children, with a path in the dark and a recorded voice that lists all the names of the fallen is difficult to forget . Outside we see a tree dedicated to Schindler ( not far away there is also his grave). I am talking of course about the German entrepreneur Oscar Schindler who saved 1100 Jews during the Nazi period. Some of you will also remember the movie Schindler's List .

Ancora scombussolati dopo la visita al museo entriamo in Gerusalemme. Non è facile resettare, ma la città ti obbliga a farlo. Per prendere confidenza saliamo sul Monte degli Ulivi, che offre un bellissimo panorama...

Still disoriented after the visit to the museum we enter Jerusalem. It is not easy to reset , but the city forces you to do so. From the Mount of Olives an amazing view of the city.

Proviamo ad interagire con la fauna locale ma siamo respinti con perdite...

We even try to interact with the local wildlife but the camel is not so happy...

Entriamo nel quartiere ebraico e, seguendo la guida lungo le viette del luogo, tutto ad un tratto ci troviamo davanti il famosissimo Muro del Pianto...

We go into the the Jewish quarter and, following the guide along the narrow streets of the place, suddenly we are in front of the famous Wailing Wall ...

Scendiamo e finalmente scopriamo sulla nostra pelle la spiritualità di questo luogo.

We go down and finally we discover the spirituality of this place.

Lasciamo il nostro bigliettino e, dopo aver osservato tantissimi ebrei pregare, risaliamo per entrare nel quartiere arabo.

We leave our personal note on the wall and, after observing many Jews pray , we go up and go into the Arab quarter.

Ecco, passare in trenta secondi dal giorno alla notte sarebbe meno traumatico. Cambia davvero tutto: le persone ovviamente, ma anche gli odori, i rumori, i negozi. E abbiamo percorso solamente un centinaio di metri dal muro del pianto, luogo di culto dell'ebraismo.

Well, after 30 seconds it's everything completely different. Really everything changes: people of course, but also the smells, the sounds, the shops. And we've only covered a few hundred meters from the Wailing Wall, Judaism place of worship.

Pranziamo in un tipico locale arabo. Lo so, è strano detto da me, ma non ricordo con esattezza quello che la guida aveva ordinato per noi: mi ricordo solamente che sia io, che gli altri, abbiamo sbranato pane arabo, carne e salsine varie! Il nome dovrebbe essere Shawerma, ma non ci giurerei.

We have lunch in a typical Arabic restaurant. I know, it's strange coming from me , but I do not remember exactly what the guide told us about what we were eating : I only remember that i ate everything: Arabic bread, meat and various sauces ! The name should be Shawerma , but I'm really not sure.

Archiviato il pranzo rimaniamo di stucco quando, uscendo dal locale, leggiamo "Via Dolorosa" lungo una delle piccole viette che caratterizzano la città.

After lunch we feel stunned when, while we are coming out, we read " Via Dolorosa " along one of the small streets.

Sì, è proprio lei, la "via crucis", che ora è diventata una lunga via caratterizzata da negozietti arabi.

Yes, that's her, the " Way of the Cross " , which has now become a long street with arabs shops.

L'ultima tappa è il quartiere cristiano e tra le tante chiese c'è anche quella in cui Gesù è stato sepolto prima di ascendere al cielo. 

The last stop is the christian neighborhood and among the many churches there is also one in which Jesus was buried before ascending to heaven.

Dopo una giornata così estenuante non potevo che concludere così. Ah, questo lo so cos'era: 400 grammi di hamburger...

After an exhausting day so I could only finish it in this way. Oh, this time i know what it was: hamburger (14 oz!) ...
