Euro 2013 championship: Israel (part 5, Masada & Dead Sea)

La terza ed ultima escursione è stata senza dubbio la più affascinante, Masada ed il Mar Morto, un'esperienza (soprattutto la seconda...) davvero incredibile. A differenza delle precedenti due "gite", il tragitto da compiere è piuttosto lungo e, lungo il deserto della Giudea, incontrerete parecchi qualche villaggio e altrettanti accampamenti di beduini. La guida ce ne fa conoscere uno e, chi come me, se lo immaginava nomade e povero rimarrà deluso. Nomade si, ma era proprietario di un'azienda di pullman...

The third and final excursion was also the most fascinating, Masada and the Dead Sea, an experience (especially the second one ...) really incredible. Unlike the previous two "trips", the trip is quite long and, along the desert of Judea, we see  few villages and many Bedouin camps. The guide let us meet one of them, and those who, like me, had imagined Bedouins as nomadic and poor were surprised when he revealed that this man is the boss of a buses company.

Avvicinandosi al Mar Morto non poteva mancare una sosta nell'azienda di prodotti per la cura del corpo più famosa d'Israele, Ahava, con relativo costosissimo shopping nel Factory Store.

Non è il Sandia Peak del New Mexico ma, vuoi per il vuoto (ma vuoto davvero) sottostante, qualche brivido lo regala... Ah l'alternativa sarebbe stata quella di compiere a piedi il sentiero del serpente (1 ora e mezza in un'autentica fornace), "un percorso talmente impervio, tortuoso, sinuoso e ripido da impedire ad un soldato romano di poggiare contemporaneamente entrambi i piedi" così racconta Giuseppe Flavio in merito a quanto accadeva nell'antichità. Tutto sommato, meglio la funivia, anche se qualche coraggioso (pazzo?) tenterà l'impresa...

This it is not the Sandia Peak, New Mexico, but it's still awsome. Oh, the alternative would have been the trail of the snakes (1 hour and a half in a furnace!), "a steep path, winding, winding and steep that prevents a Roman soldier to rest both feet at the same time" as Giuseppe Flavio tells about what happened in ancient times. All in all, the cable car is better, although a few brave (crazy) people attempt the climbing...

Eccoci in cima. Che dire di Masada? Innanzitutto che il caldo è opprimente, ma nel deserto è tutto abbastanza normale (in cima ci sono comunque diverse fontane con acqua potabile). Masada era un'antica fortezza situata sua una roccia a 400 metri di altitudine rispetto al Mar Morto, le cui mura, alte più di cinque metri, la rendevano inespugnabile. La fortezza divenne nota per l'assedio dell'esercito romano durante la prima guerra giudaica e per la sua tragica conclusione...

Here we are at the top. What about Masada? First, the heat is oppressive, but in the desert it's all pretty normal (at the top there are still several fountains with drinking water). Masada was an ancient fortress located on a rock at 400 meters above sea level compared to the Dead Sea, the walls of which, more than five meters tall, made it impenetrable. The fortress became famous for the siege of the Roman army during the First Jewish War and for its tragic conclusion ...

Nel I secolo A.C. la fortezza era il palazzo di Erode il Grande che  la fece fortificare. La cittadina era arroccata su tre diversi livelli verso lo strapiombo sul lato nord della rupe, dotato di terme con caldaia centrale, magazzini sotterranei ed ampie cisterne per la raccolta dell'acqua.

During the first century before Christ the fort was the palace of Herod the Great.

Successivamente s'insediò la comunità ebraica dei sicarii. Dopo un lungo assedio i Romani riuscirono alla fine a costruire una imponente rampa di accesso. Tuttavia, poco prima che ciò avvenisse, nell'anno 74 gli assediati misero in atto un'azione rimasta unica nella storia; quando i soldati romani vi entrarono senza trovare resistenza davanti ai loro occhi trovarono solo una orrenda ecatombe: il suicidio collettivo della comunità.

Then the Jewish community called "Sicarii" settled there. After a long siege, the Romans managed in the end to build an imposing entrance ramp. However, shortly before that, in the year 74 the Jewish community did something unique in history: when Roman soldiers entered without any resistance they found only a horrendous massacre: the collective suicide of the community.

Lasciata Masada ci dirigiamo verso la grande attrazione della giornata, il Mar Morto, situato nel punto più basso della terra (415 metri sotto il livello del mare).

Leaving Masada we head towards the big attraction of the day, the Dead Sea, located at the lowest point on earth (415 meters below sea level).

Affrontiamo la strada che lo costeggia sino ad arrivare ad una sorta di centro turistico in mezzo al nulla. Un'autentica oasi nel deserto che ogni giorno riceve centinaia di turisti o persone che si affidano scelgono il Mar Morto per curarsi.

We face the road along the sea until we reach a sort of tourist center in the middle of nowhere. An authentic oasis in the desert that every day receives hundreds of tourists or people who chose the Dead Sea for treatments.

La guida ci ricorda le fondamentali linee guida: non state più di quindici minuti a bagno e non giocate perchè anche un solo schizzo d'acqua negli occhi "vi garantirà un brutto quarto d'ora...".

The guide reminds us of the fundamental guidelines: we do not stay more than fifteen minutes into the water and do not play because even a single splash of water in your eyes makes them burn.

Sapevo che "sarebbe stato impossibile affondare", ma viverlo di persona è un qualcosa di unico. La quantità salina presente permette a chiunque di galleggiare senza alcuno sforzo, più difficile invece risulta nuotare.

I knew that "it was impossible to sink," but the experience is unique. The amount of salt allow everyone to float without any effort, but it's impossible to swim.

Ah, dopo dieci minuti immersi nelle sue acque (e dopo l'obbligatoria doccia una volta usciti dall'acqua) si avrà la pelle come quella di un bambino per qualche oretta buona. Una sensazione unica.

After ten minutes into the water (and after the shower) your skin is like that of a child.
