2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 23: Maui - West & Central Maui)

STOPS: Kepaniwai Heritage Garden, Iao Valley State Park, Nakalele Point, Napili Bay beach

L'esordio con l'isola di Maui è decisamente soft. Lasciamo quello che sulla carta dovrebbe essere il meglio dell'isola (la "road to Hana" e l'Haleakala National Park) per i giorni successivi e puntiamo dritti verso il nord ovest dell'isola, una sorta di loop su Lahaina che coinvolge un pezzettino della Maui centrale e tutta la costa a nord.

The first stage in Maui is quite soft. We will visit in the next two days which on paper should be the best of the island ("The Road to Hana" and the Haleakala National Park), now we're going straight towards the northwest of the island. This is a a sort of loop which starts and ends in Lahaina and involves a small piece of central Maui and the entire north coast.

La prima deviazione ci porta nel cuore della Iao Valley. Si sale di quota e si entra nella "Valle dei Re", Iao Valley appunto, che prende il suo nome dal Dio di tutti gli Dei, la Luce Suprema. Qui un altare naturale, la Iao Needle, si eleva a 365 metri sopra il ruscello che scorre ai suoi piedi. Prima di raggiungere lo Iao Valley State Park incrocerete il KepaniWai Heritage, una riserva naturale nella quale sono riprodotte case e giardini che rappresentano i maggiori gruppi etnici insediati a Maui. E quindi una casa coloniale del New England, una casa da tè giapponese, una capanna dal tetto di paglia ed una pagoda cinese.

The first deviation takes us into the heart of the Iao Valley, in the middle of the mountains. This is the "Valley of the Kings", Iao Valley, which takes its name from the God of all gods, the Supreme Light. A natural altar, the Iao Needle, rises 365 meters above the stream which flows under the needle. Before reaching the Iao Valley State Park we encounter the Kepaniwai Heritage, a nature reserve in which are reproduces houses and gardens that represent the largest ethnic groups settled in Maui: a colonial New England's house, a Japanese tea-house, a hut with a thatched roof and a Chinese pagoda.

Il gioiellino della Iao Valley è però il Iao Valley State Park anche se, almeno secondo noi, un po' sopravvalutato. Un loop trail di 500 metri permette, attraversando anche il torrente, di ammirare la valle ed in particolare il "needle".

The Jewel of the Iao Valley, however, is the Iao Valley State Park. Although, in our opinion, it is a bit overrated. A 0.3 loop trail allows to admire the valley, the river and especially the "needle".

Una volta raggiunta la costa si entra nella remota area delle Maui Mountains. L'unica strada percorribile (e che percorre l'intera costa) è la Kahekili Highway (Hawaii 340) che, per l'ultimo tratto, diventa poi Highway 30. La strada collega la regione di Maui Mountains con le località di Kapalua Kaanapali da una parte, e Kahului dall'altra. E ovviamente in sottofondo ci sarà sempre l'oceano.

Upon reaching the coast the remote area of ​​Maui Mountains appears in front of us. The only way to reach those places is the Kahekili Highway (Hawaii 340) which will then become Highway 30. The road connects the Maui Mountains region with the towns of Kaanapali  and Kapalua (west side) and Kahului (east side). The ocean is always in the background, of course.

E' proprio da Kahului che partiamo in direzione nord, lungo questa strada da cardiopalma, che ben poco ha da invidiare alla più famosa "Highway to Hana". Carreggiate strettissime e panorami incredibili caratterizzano i 32 chilometri della Hawaii 340: per percorrerla interamente impieghiamo due ore.

Starting from Kahului  we head towards north along this breath taking road, which is as beautiful as the most famous "Highway to Hana". Narrow roadways and incredible views characterize the 20 miles of the Hawaii 340: it takes two hours to complete the entire road.

L'attrazione probabilmente principe dell'intera area è Nakalele Point, un incredibile paesaggio di lava che si affaccia sul mare. Quando l'oceano si scaglia sulle rocce, un getto di geyser esplode sino a raggiungere anche i 15 metri di altezza.

The most important attraction of the entire area is Nakalele Point, an incredible landscape of lava overlooking the sea. When the ocean rushes over the rocks, a geyser explodes.

Incrociamo anche qualche negozietto sperduto tra le montagne prima di tornare alla civiltà e quindi anche alle spiagge, tra le più belle dell'isola. Per il pomeriggio scegliamo quella di Napili Bay, nella città di Kapalua. Il "The Gazebo", situato proprio a Kapalua, pare offra le migliori colazioni di tutte le isole delle Hawaii, ma le code interminabili ci hanno sempre fatto desistere. L'appuntamento che invece non mancheremo è quello con l'ormai leggendario tramonto di Lahaina. La tranquillità, i colori e l'atmosfera di quella piccola cittadina sono diventati sin da subito una calamita. 

We  also encounter some little shops lost in the mountains before returning to civilization and therefore also to the beaches: Here you'll find some of Maui's most beautiful beaches. We stop at Napili Bay, in the town of Kapalua. "The Gazebo", located right in Kapalua, seems to offer the best breakfast of all the Hawaiian Islands, but you'll have to be ready to wait for a table. The apointment we won't miss is the one with the legendary sunset of Lahaina. Tranquility, colors and atmosphere make Lahiana a special place.

2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 24: Maui - "Road to Hana")

Natura incontaminata e selvaggia, pochissima civiltà ed una strada che simboleggia il rifiuto allo sviluppo di una città, Hana, i cui abitanti mantengono un deciso distacco verso il mondo moderno della parte restante dell'isola. Oggi siamo diretti ad Hana, profondo sud dell'isola, percorrendo una delle strade più celebri d'America, per alcuni addirittura la più bella: la "road to Hana" (o Highway 360 to Hana), gli 85 chilometri più tortuosi delle intere Hawaii che vanno da Kahului ad Hana appunto, ultimo baluardo delle Hawaii più selvagge. 617 curve e 60 ponti caratterizzano una strada ad unica corsia che attraversa foreste pluviali e cascate lungo i dirupi costieri. 

Wild, unspoiled nature, very little civilization and a road that symbolizes the rejection to the development of a city, Hana, whose inhabitants maintain a strong detachment from the modern world of the remainder of the island. We are going to Hana, very deep south of the island, along one of the most popular streets of America, for some even the most beautiful: the "Road to Hana" (or Highway 360 to Hana), the 85 kilometers mort tortuous of the whole Hawaii ranging from Kahului to Hana, the last bastion of the wildest Hawaii. 617 curves and 60 bridges characterize a single lane road running through rainforests and waterfalls along the coastal cliffs.

Se è vero che i chilometri non sono molti, per percorrerla impiegheremo diverse ore anche perchè, una volta raggiunta Kaupo la strada diventa sostanzialmente impraticabile. Qualche coraggioso deciderà comunque di proseguire e rientrerà dal versante ovest, ma le stesse agenzie di noleggio auto saranno le prime a "consigliarvi" di ripercorrere nuovamente la "road to Hana" in senso contrario. Ed è ciò che faremo anche noi. 

It is true that not there are not so many kilometers to travel, anyway it will take us several hours to complete the road (and back) also because, once achieved Kaupo the road becomes unpavel and dirty. Nonetheless a few brave decide to continue and will return from the west side of the island. Car rental agencies always "advise" to drive again the "road to Hana" in the opposite directiont and that's what we'll do.

La "road to Hana" va preparata con accortezza. Le attrazioni sono moltissime e quasi mai ben segnalate e probabilmente servirebbero due giorni per poter ammirarle tutte. Noi ci siamo focalizzati sull'Oheo Gulch (Pipiwai trail), posizionato proprio alla fine della highway, una ventina di minuti dopo aver superato la città di Hana. Il Pipiwai Trail è situato nel versante sud dell'Haleakala National Park, lontanissimo dalle altre attrazioni del parco (ingresso al parco nazionale: 20 dollari). 

The "Road to Hana" trip should be prepared with care. There are many attractions and almost never well marked and probably it would take two days to be able to admire all of them. We are going to hike the Pipiwai trail (Oheo Gulch), located at the very end of the highway, about twenty minutes after passing the town of Hana. The Pipiwai Trail is located in the south slope of Haleakala National Park, far from the other attractions of the park ($ 20 fee).

Qui siamo sul mare e l'intera area è famosa anche per le "seven sacred pools", sette piscine naturali con altrettante cascate, l'ultima delle quali proprio a ridosso del mare. Noi però siamo qui per percorrere le quattro miglia (due ore) del Pipiwai Trail, un percorso che si snoda all'interno di una foresta di bamboo e che culmina alle cascate Waimoku. 

We are close to the sea and the entire area is also famous for the "seven sacred pools", seven natural pools with many waterfalls, the last of which lies very close to the sea. Anyway we are were because of the very famous Pipiwai Trail (4 miles roundtrip, two hours), a path that winds through a bamboo forest and ends at the Waimoku waterfalls.

Di gran lunga l'esperienza più affascinante della nostra avventura nel cinquantesimo stato americano. A metà tragitto la pioggia irrompe, rendendo ancor più incredibile la camminata sotto le canne di bamboo.

By far the most fascinating experience of our adventure in the fiftieth American state. In mid-way the rain breaks, making the the walk under the bamboo canes even more amazing

Rientrando, tra i tanti stop possibili, abbiamo scelto la Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach, situata al mile marker 32.2. In questo tratto di costa lavica all'interno del Waianapanapa State Park l'oceano è violentissimo e la spiaggia, nerissima, è accompagnata da rocce enormi. Sono in tanti a fare il bagno nonostante le onde siano parecchio alte. 

Among the many possible stops, we chose the Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach, located at mile marker 32.2. In this stretch of lava coast a short, yet steep, path led us to the beach which started with large coal colored rock, followed by shiny black sand with descending sizes of pebbles

L'ultima fermata è decisamente "golosa": Huelo Lookout Fruit Stand (mile marker 4.5), per un gustosissimo smoothie dal nome e dal gusto decisamente hawaiano, il Tropical Vibe (banana, ananas e passion fruit).

The last stop is very "greedy": Huelo Lookout Fruit Stand (mile marker 4.5), for a tasty smoothie Hawaiian taste, the Vibe Tropical (banana, pineapple and passion fruit). This is Hawaii!

Avremmo voluto fermarci in almeno altri dieci luoghi, attratti da trail e cascate alcune ben visibili già dalla strada, ma il tempo è davvero tiranno. Ecco alcuni degli stop principali che abbiamo a malincuore dovuto saltare, per questioni di tempo o perchè non siamo riusciti a trovarli.

We wish we had visited at least ten other places, attracted by some waterfalls trail still clearly visible from the road, but time is really up. These are some of the major stops that we reluctantly had to skip, for reasons of time or because we were unable to find them.

Mile Marker 9.5 – Waikamoi Nature Trail

Il Waikamoi Nature trail è un trail molto semplice, tra alberi giganti e punti panoramici. I più avventurieri possono percorrere il trail più lungo e difficile.

The Waikamoi Nature Trail is an easy loop hike filled with ferns, tall trees and scenic overlooks. There are two hiking options; the long route and the short.


Mile Marker 10.6 – Garden of Eden

Il Garden of Eden è un arboretum perfetto per identificarsi con tutta la flora locale che poi si trova lungo i vari trail. Tuttavia è decisamente costoso (15 dollari). 

The Garden of Eden is one of those pricey, touristy arboretums which is a great stop for identifying all the local plants that you will see during your Hawaiian travels. Plus, they have a couple of waterfall lookouts.

Mile Marker 16.8 – Ching’s Pond

Ching's Pond è una piscina naturale molto amata dai locali. Alcuni dei quali ci si tuffano dentro da una distanza di una decina di metri. 

Ching’s Pond is a popular swimming. The brave locals cliff dive from the bridge, a 25 foot drop. The less adventurous leap from the lower portions. 

Mile Marker 18.8 – Wailua Valley State Wayside

Per chi vuole ammirare splendidi panorami di Ke'anae Valley, Ko'olau Gap e del villaggio di Wailua.

Mile Marker 19.5– Upper Waikani Falls

Conosciuta anche come cascata dei tre orsi, la Upper Waikani è proabilmente la cascata più famosa di tutta la "road to Hana".

The Upper Waikani Falls is also known as Three Bear Falls and is one of the most popular waterfalls of all the Road to Hana stops.

2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 25: Maui - "Upcountry")

STOPS: Maui Tropical Plantation, Alii Kula Lavender Farm, Church of the Holy Ghost, Haleakala National Park

Il tempo a disposizione qui a Maui non è mai abbastanza. Nonostante due giornate decisamente intense ci rendiamo conto che da visitare c'è ancora moltissimo, tutta la zona orientale e la upcountry (la regione montana), dalla quale ci aspettiamo moltissimo. Oggi sulla carta dovrebbe essere il grande giorno dell'Haleakala National Park, il più grande vulcano inattivo al mondo, che domina sostanzialmente tutto il versante ovest e sud dell'isola. Prima di raggiungerlo (un'ora e mezza da Lahaina) però sono in programma alcune fermate in luoghi molto particolari dell'isola, partendo dalla Maui Tropical Plantation (entrata gratuita), una classica piantagione hawaiana.

Time here in Maui is never enough. Despite two very intense days we realize that there is still a lot to visit, the entire east region and the upcountry (the mountain region), from which we expect a great deal. Today we should visit the Haleakala National Park, the largest dormant volcano in the world, which basically dominates the east and south side of the island. Before reaching it (an hour and a half from Lahaina) however we've scheduled some stops in very special places on the island, starting from the Maui Tropical Plantation (free entry), a classic Hawaiian plantation.

Al suo interno sono presenti laghetti, un negozio di articoli regalo, agenzie che offrono escursioni (anche zip-line) ed un ristorante. E' anche possibile effettuare una visita della piantagione con il trenino, il cui costo è tuttavia eccessivo (20 dollari).

Inside the plantation you'll find ponds, a gift shop, agencies that offer tours (even zip-line) and a restaurant. You could also make a tour of the plantation by train (very expensive: $ 20).

La regione dell'Upcountry è splendida. Una sorta di Montana catapultato alle Hawaii, con il gioiellino dell'Haleakala National Park a renderla una delle mete più apprezzate dai visitatori. Qui si coltivano fragole, le famose cipolle delle Hawaii e tantissime specie di fiori, molte delle quali raccolte nel Floral Enchanting Garden. Noi però stiamo percorrendo una strada sterrata che sale ripidamente verso il Alii Kula Lavender Farm, dove 31 tipi di lavanda coltivati sui pendii dell'Haleakala ispirano i sensi.

The Upcountry region is amazing. A sort of Montana catapulted to Hawaii, with the jewel called Haleakala National Park which makes it one of the most popular destinations of Maui. Strawberries, the famous Hawaii's onion and many species of flowers, many of which are collected in the Enchanting Floral Garden, are cultivated in this area. Anyway we're driving along a dirt road that leads to the Alii Kula Lavender Farm, where 31 kinds of lavender grown on the slopes of Haleakala . This place really inspires senses.

Nonostante il meteo non prometta nulla di buono (e fa freddo, molto freddo!) non vorremmo più andarcene. Ci gustiamo uno scone con un bel thé caldo e acquistiamo diversi prodotti, prima di affrontare la salita sull'Haleakala. Vorremmo visitare anche la Church of the Holy Ghost, una chiesa del 1897, un dono ai primi abitanti portoghesi di Maui, ma non riusciamo a trovarla.

Despite a bad weather (it's cold, very cold!) we do not want to leave this place. We enjoy a delicious scone with a hot tea and buy different products, before facing the climb to the Haleakala. We would also visit the Church of the Holy Ghost, an 1897 church, a gift to the first Portuguese residents of Maui, but we're not able to find it.

64 chilometri ci porteranno in poco più di un'ora ai 3500 metri di Puu Ulaula, la cima più alta dell'Haleakala. Nonostante le condizioni avverse (piove e c'è nebbia) vogliamo comunque provarci. Non si vede nulla e le ripide pendici dell'Haleakala, avvolte nel bianco della nebbia, fanno anche paura.

A 40 miles road will take us to top of the volcano (3500 meters) called Puu Ulaula, the highest peak of Haleakala. Despite the adverse weather conditions (it's raining and foggy) we still want to try to reach the top. The steep slopes of Haleakala, shrouded in white mist, are impressive: we cannot see anything and it's really scary!

Arriviamo sino in cima, dove le condizioni climatiche sono anche peggiorate. Le temperature sono intorno agli 0 gradi, forse anche qualcosina in meno: insieme a noi un'altra decina di visitatori che, come noi, delusa decide di rientrare. Fortunatamente avevamo lasciato un giorno libero nel nostro programma di viaggio: ci riproveremo domani e ve lo racconteremo nel dettaglio.

Up to the top the climatic conditions are also worse. It's freezing. Temperatures are around 0 degrees, maybe even below. A dozen of visitors, like us, decided to come back: we are all very disappointed. Luckily we left a day off in our travel schedule: we'll try again tomorrow...

Come se non bastasse, mentre scendiamo verso valle scopriamo che la nostra Mustang ha un problema al motore, Questa non è la nostra giornata. Fortunatamente la Dollar impiega pochissimo a sbrigare le pratiche e a darci le chiavi di una nuova auto. Un'altra mustang, questa volta rossa...

What's more? as we descend into the valley we find out that our Mustang has an engine problem: this isn't definitely our day. We have to go to the rental car (Dollar) which immediately gives us a new car. Another Mustang, a red one...

2016 trip - Route 66, Hawaii, Seattle and much more (day 26: Haleakala National Park)

Chi l'ha dura... la vince. Se siamo a Maui è anche e soprattutto per l'Haleakala National Park e non possiamo davvero non riprovarci. Il momento migliore per visitare il parco nazionale rimane il mattino, anzi l'alba per l'esattezza, quando ammirandola dalla sommità del cratere (considerata da sempre sacra), sembra che il sole sorga direttamente dalla caldera per accendere non solo le isole hawaiane, ma tutto il mondo. Un fenomeno naturale senza eguali. Tuttavia le fatiche del quasi mese speso in giro per gli stati americani ci impediscono si svegliarci alle 4. Siamo davvero stanchissimi e, almeno per la prima parte della mattinata dell'ultimo giorno hawaiano, è la spiaggia a farci da fedele compagna.

The Haleakala National Park is the main attraction of Maui which we would like to visit. The best time to visit the national park is in the morning, when people can admire the sunrise from the top of the crater (always considered sacred by locals): it seems that the sun rises directly from the caldera and turns on not just all the Hawaiian Islands, but all the entire world. An amazing natural phenomenon. After one month spent around the United States we are not really able to wake up at 4 am: for the fist part of the day the beach is our faithful companion...

L'Haleakala però è sempre lì che ci aspetta e nel primo pomeriggio stiamo già salendo lungo la ripida Haleakala Highway (378). Salire dal livello del mare fino a 3048 metri in soli 64 chilometri è sostanzialmente come fare Messico-Alaska in due ore. Le nubi non ci hanno del tutto abbandonato, ma in confronto a ieri è davvero tutta un'altra musica.

The Haleakala is still there waiting for us. It's afternoon and we're driving again the "378": from the sea level to 3048 meters high in just 64 kilometers is basically like doing Mexico-Alaska in two hours. Clouds are still there, but compared to yesterday it's definitely a good day! 

Persino le temperature sono decisamente più umane (intorno ai 13-15 gradi). Il primo view point è il Leleiwi Overlook, la pietra miliare, un brevissimo trail che prende il via dal lato opposto della strada rispetto al parcheggio e che permette di ammirare per la prima volta il paesaggio lunare dell'Haleakala.

Today it's definitely warmer. The first view point is the Leleiwi Overlook, a milestone, a very short trail which starts right across the street from the parking lot: you can admire for the first time the lunar landscape of Haleakala.

 E' qui che potrete provare l'esperienza dello "Specter of the Brocken", un fenomeno naturale del vulcano che consente di poter vedere la propria ombra in un'aura vaporosa dai colori dell'arcobaleno, che gli abitanti dell'isola chiamano Aka-ku-anue-nue, la "percezione dell'anima". Purtroppo  le nuvole sono molto basse (siamo ancora a 1500 metri) e la nostra anima decide di non venire allo scoperto.

In this place you can live the experience called "Specter of the Brocken", a natural phenomenon of the volcano that lets you see your own shadow in a fluffy rainbow-colored aura, which the islanders call Aka- ku-Anue-nue, the "perception of the soul." Unfortunately the clouds are very low and our soul decides not to come out.

Dopo un paio di tornanti incrocerete il Kalahaku Overlook, il luogo migliore per ammirare alcune delle forme di vita tra le più rare di tutta la terra. Come le oche delle Hawaii e soprattutto la "ahinahina", una particolarissima pianta che può restare sino a venti anni nella forma di una corona argentea dalle foglie appuntite per poi produrre uno stelo carico di fiori alto anche tre metri.

After a couple of bends you'll encounter the Kalahaku Overlook, the best place to see some of the forms of life among the rarest of all the earth. As the geese of Hawaii and especially the "ahinahina", a very particular plant that can live up to twenty years in the form of a silver crown with pointed leaves and then produce a flower stalk.

Il Puu Ulaula Overlook, nei pressi dell'Haleakala Observatory è l'ultimo view point. E' qui, a quasi 3500 metri di altitudine, che centinaia di persone ogni mattina si ritrovano per ammirare una delle albe più maestose al mondo.

The Puu Ulaula Overlook, near the Haleakala Observatory, is the last view point. Here, at almost 3,500 meters above sea level, hundreds of people gather every morning to admire one of the most majestic sunrises in the world.

Da qui prendono il via ben 57 km di trail che si avventurano all'interno del cratere e mai come questa volta riusciamo a comprendere le parole spese da Mark Twain nel 1970 ("E' come se fossi l'ultimo uomo, dimenticato dal Giudizio Universale e sospeso a metà del cielo, il relitto abbandonato da un mondo scomparso") a proposito dell'Haleakala. Un luogo fuori dal mondo.

From the top of the volcano you can hike 57 km of trails who venture inside the crater and we can really understand the words spent by Mark Twain in 1970 ( "It 's like you're the last man, forgotten by the Last Judgment and suspended in mid-air, the wreckage left by a vanished world ") about Haleakala. A place out of this world.

Percorriamo circa un km di trail, poi tra capogiri e mal di testa che diventano sempre più imponenti, intuiamo che forse è meglio tornare indietro. L'ultimo tramonto di Lahaina ci aspetta...

We hike the trail for just one mile, but as soon as dizziness and headaches become more impressive we decide to come back to the visitor center. The last Lahaina's sunset is waiting for us...
