E' lo stato dell'Oklahoma a svolgere il compito di fedele compagno di viaggio nella giornata di oggi, una tappa non elettrizzante come lo era stata quella del giorno precedente, ma che ci ha regalato nel finale probabilmente una delle emozioni più grandi dell'intero viaggio. Siamo nella parte centrale, nel cuore dello stato e stiamo viaggiando in direzione Oklahoma City, la città principale del "native american State" mentre incontriamo il primo historical bridge della giornata, l'Historic Pryor Creek Bridge a Chelsea.
The great state of Oklahoma will be our faithful travel companion today. This isn't an exciting stage as the previous one, but will give us in the end probably one of the biggest emotion of' the entire trip. We are in the heart of the state and traveling toward Oklahoma City (the main city of the "native american State") when we encounter the first historical bridge of the day, the Historic Pryor Creek Bridge in Chelsea.
Il legame tra lo stato dell'Oklahoma ed i nativi americani è molto forte. Ed è proprio a Foyil, circa 3.5 miglia fuori dal tracciato della route 66, che l'artista Ed Galloway tra il 1937 ed il 1961 costruì alcuni totem dedicati proprio agli indigeni. Ora è diventato il Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park. L'ingresso è gratuito e potrete ammirare i totem progettati e costruiti dall'artista dell'Oklahoma, alti addirittura quasi 30 metri.
The connection between the state of Oklahoma and the Native Americans is very strong. In Foyil, about 3.5 miles off the route 66, the artist Ed Galloway (between 1937 and 1961) built some totems dedicated precisely to the natives. Now it has become the Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park. Admission is free and you can admire the totem designed and built by the artist, some of them 90 feet tall.
Poco più in là, a Claremore, visitiamo (ingresso gratuito), la Belvidere Mansion, una casa in stile vittoriano dove, già al solo ingresso, si viene catapultati indietro nel tempo. Non solo per la sala da ballo all'ultimo piano, ma anche per la possibilità di gustarsi un thè mentre le gentilissime signore vi racconteranno la storia della casa.
A little farther on, in Claremore, we visit (admission free), the Belvidere Mansion, a Victorian style house where you're really back in time. Not only because of the ballroom on the top floor, but also for the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea while the nicest ladies tell you the story of the house.
Siamo un'area storica della route 66, almeno per quanto riguarda l'Oklahoma. Prima il Totem Pole Park ed ora Catoosa, una città da sempre simbolo della route per via della sua "balena", un ex parco divertimenti da tempo abbandonato, diventato luogo culto dei viaggiatori lungo la route 66.
This is an area where you can find many historical route 66 places. Totem Pole Park just few mileas ago and now Catoosa, a city which has always been one of the masterpieces of the mother road, especially because of the "whale", a former amusement park now abandoned, which has become a must stop for every travelers along the Route 66.
Parliamo di uno dei primi cinque luoghi da visitare lungo le oltre 2700 miglia di tracciato, ma quello che troverete è soprattutto un senso di decadenza e di abbandono. "Non perdete troppo tempo dalla balena, ci sono cose molto più interessanti in questa area da visitare" ci hanno detto diversi abitanti del posto. Avevano ragione.
Let's talk about one of the top five most visited attractions along the 2,700 miles of the mother road, but what you really discover is sense of decay and neglect. "Do not waste too much time at the whale, there are things much more interesting in this area to visit" we have been told several times by locals. They were right.
Ma, c'è un ma. Nel piazzale davanti al laghetto che contiene la "balena", abbiamo mangiato uno dei tacos migliori della spedizione. Il food truck di "Molly" è inconfondibile e non deluderà la vostra voglia di cucina tex mex.
But there is an exception. Located in the square just in front of the pond that contains the "whale", Molly serves one of the best taco we've ever had.
Route 66 in Oklahoma goes not only through Oklahoma City, but also through the second largest city in the state, Tulsa. Actually also one of the most ugly of the North American continent. You won't visit it unless you're traveling along the mother road or going to visit one of the most interesting museums in the United States (which will be discussed in the Notes). Well, we are not interested in museums, so what do we do? Certainly the Golden Triller, the huge statue of an "oil worker", is not enough to make a trip to Tulsa, even if oil here, like football, is a kind of religion ...
... Il guizzo vincente tuttavia non tarda arrivare. Per dare un senso alla sosta in quel di Tulsa andiamo alla caccia del "center of the Universe". Già, proprio quello. Situato non lontano da downtown, Center of the Universe è un luogo del tutto particolare, unico al mondo. In un preciso punto (ben segnalato) la tua voce rimbomba. We are here because of the center of the universe. Yes, you understood well. Located not far from downtown, the "center of Universe" is a very particular place, unique in the world. Attraversiamo le città di Sapulpa e Stroud (dove potrete visitare il Route 66 interepretive center) sino ad arrivare ad Arcadia dove attenderci ci sono due luoghi del tutto particolari. Il primo è il round barn, l'enorme granaio rotondo che, come la route 66, ha vissuto il suo momento di massimo splendore parecchi anni fa
We go through Sapulpa, Stroud (where you can visit the Route 66 interepretive center) and then Arcadia where we encounter two special places The first is the old round barn which, as the route 66 too, has lived its moment of greatest splendor many years ago
E poi "Pops". Se doveste aver sete e voglia di una bibita gassata, questo è il vostro posto. Ne troverete di 500 tipi, una diversa dall'altra. Alcune sono introvabili. Al suo interno vi è anche un ristorante.
And then "Pops". If you are thirsty and want a soda, this is your place. You will find 500 types of soda. Some are impossible to find elsewhere. Inside Pops there is also a restaurant.
Vi abbiamo detto in apertura di post che sarebbe stato il finale a regalarci le più grandi emozioni, in una tappa che di per sé non ha offerto alcunché di imperdibile. Siamo ad Oklahoma City, non lontani dalla downtown (due isolati) e l'atmosfera è già cambiata. Stiamo per visitare l'Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, il museo-memoriale del primo grande attentato terroristico all'interno degli Stati Uniti. La rilevanza mediatica non è stata ovviamente pari a quella dell'11 settembre 2001, ma tutto l'Oklahoma (ed in particolare la sua città regina) è ancora oggi segnato dai fatti accaduti il 19 aprile 1995.
We told you at the beginning of this post that in the end of the day we would have had a great experience. We are in Oklahoma City, not far from downtown (two blocks) and the atmosphere has already changed. We are going to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, the memorial museum of the first major terrorist attack within the United States. The media coverage was obviously not equal to that of September 11, 2001, but all Oklahoma (and in particular its Queen City) is still marked by the events that took place on April 19, 1995.
Siamo fortunati perchè in teoria il museo sta per chiudere, ma la gentilissima signora dopo aver visto la delusione sui nostri volti non solo fa uno strappo alla regola facendoci entrare, ma ci permette di farlo gratuitamente (il prezzo del biglietto sarebbe di 15 dollari).
We are lucky because even if the museum is about to close, the nice lady after seeing the disappointment on our faces not only makes an exception to the rule letting us enter into the museum, but even without any charge (the ticket price would be $ 15).
A day like any other day. This sentence appears as soon as you enter in this museum which recounts in detail the tragic events that occurred on April 19, 1995. It was 9:01 a.m. when a bomb containing more than 2,300 kg of ammonium fertilizer nitrate exploded in front of the Federal Building: 168 people died (including 19 children) and 680 were hurt. McVeigh and Nichols were the perpetrators although, as often happens, there are still conspiracy theories...
All'esterno del museo sorge il memoriale. Sono ricordate tutte le vittime, mentre l'orologio è fermo sulle 9.01. Esattamente l'ora in cui Oklahoma City cambiò per sempre.
The memorial stands just outside the museum. They shall remember all the people who fell, while the clock is stopped on 9.01. Exactly the time when Oklahoma City changed forever.
Poi, come ci insegnano le storie americane, c'è sempre quel qualcosa che rende romantiche anche vicende tristi come l'attentato al Federal Building. L'esplosione, che si sentì fino a 60 km di distanza, non solo rase al suolo l'edificio, ma danneggiò anche tutto quello che vi fosse vicino. Tutto tranne questo albero, posizionato all'esterno del Federal Building e ora dal museo, che resistette. Da qui la città di Okhaoma è ripartita.
Then, as the American stories often tell, there is always something that makes a little bit romantic also a sad event like the Federal Building bombing. The explosion, which was heard up to 40 miles away, not only destroyed the building, but also damaged all the buildings which were located close to it. Anything but a tree, placed outside the Federal Building, which resisted. That symbolizes the Oklahoma City's restart.

Avremmo voluto visitare anche il National Western Heritage Museum (il più bel museo dedicato al west e ai cowboy), ma ormai è tardissimo. Raggiungiamo Bricktown, una sorta di fratello minore del "riverwalk" di San Antonio, un piccolo canale d'acqua con ristoranti e pub.
We also would like to visit the National Western Heritage Museum (the most beautiful museum dedicated to the west and cowboys), but it is very late. We reach Bricktown, a sort of San Antonio "riverwalk" younger brother, a small water canal with restaurants and pubs.
La prova definitiva che amiamo alla follia gli Stati Uniti è che anche Oklahoma City, come San Antonio ci è piaciuta. E non sono propriamente né Chicago e neppure New York.
The ultimate proof that we are absolutely in love with the United States Of America is that we even like cities like Oklahoma City or San Antonio. Well, they're not exactly neither Chicago nor New York
Dobbiamo sollevare il morale e l'unico modo è andare nel locale del cantante country preferito di Marco, "Toby Keith i love this bar". E' il classico sports bar americano e le sue alette di pollo con salsa ranch sono la fine del mondo.
We need to change our mood and the only way is to go to Marco's favourite country singer restaurant: "Toby Keith i love this bar". This is a classic American sports bar and its chicken wings with ranch dressing are definitely amazing.
