Se è vero che a rendere speciale il nord del Texas ed in particolare Amarillo è il Cadillac Ranch, c'è un luogo poco frequentato persino dagli americani stessi (figuriamoci dagli europei), ma che è in grado di offrire il primo vero antipasto di quella che sarà la natura che coloro che stanno viaggiando verso ovest si troveranno di fronte in New Mexico prima ed in Arizona poi. No, non stiamo parlando del Big Bend National Park, situato al bollente (in tutti i sensi) confine con il Messico, che è sin troppo famoso, ma del Canyon di Palo Duro State Park (ingresso 5 dollari a persona), 35 miglia a sud est di Amarillo.
It is true that what makes a trip to Northern Texas (and especially Amarillo) very special is the visit to the Cadillac Ranch. Anyway there is another very little known place (even the Americans ignore it) which is able to offer the first true welcome to the nature you will bump into , especially in New Mexico and Arizona. Well, we're not talking about Big Bend National Park, located on the hot border with Mexico, which is all too famous. The place we're going to visit is the Palo Duro Canyon State Park (admission fee $ 5 per person), 35 miles southeast of Amarillo.
Parliamo del secondo canyon per dimensioni degli interi Stati Uniti (120 miglia di lunghezza, 20 di larghezza), dietro solamente al Grand Canyon, ma nonostante ciò ancora sorprendentemente poco noto al turismo di massa per via della sua collocazione non proprio felicissima.
This is the second largest canyon of the entire United States (120 miles long, 20 wide): it just comes after the Grand Canyon, but nevertheless still surprisingly little known maybe because of its location not exactly perfect.
Il suo nome significa legno duro, in riferimento alle piante di ginepro che sono abbondanti in questa parte dello stato ed il colore rossastro è dovuto all'enorme quantità di ferro presente nel terreno.
Palo Duro Canyon (from the Spanish meaning "hard stick") has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas" both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to those in the Grand Canyon.
La visita comprende un loop di una trentina di chilometri: con la propria vettura sarà possibile scendere nel canyon e affrontare uno dei molti trail. Non sarà una natura maestosa ed affascinante come quella che trovereste in Arizona, ma vale ampiamente la deviazione.
The visit includes a loop of about twenty miles. You will be able to descend with your car into the canyon and hike one of the many trails. It may be not as majestic and fascinating as the nature you would find in Arizona, but it definitely worth a visit.
We have to come back to Amarillo and take the "mother road" again towards Vega, one of those typical towns of the route 66, reminiscent of days gone by. We won't forget the kindness of the lady who works at the Magnolia Gas Station, one of the oldest route 66 gas station. She was about to leave with her car when, as soon as she noticed us, came back specifically to allow us to take some pictures and tell some stories.
Distante una cinquantina di metri scorgerete un auto nera: sì, è proprio lei: Lizzie di cars. mentre qualche isolato più in la, un po' nascosto, c'è Dot's Mini Museum, una delle roadside attraction della route. Un museo del 1944 contenente cimeli della strada madre.
You will notice a black car just thirty meters far from the gas station: yes, it's cars' Lizzie! Few blocks far, a bit hidden, there's Dots Mini Museum, one of the roadside attraction of the route 66. A museum established in 1944 containing relics of the mother road.
Ontario e Glenrio (che vanta il "first and last motel" in Texas a seconda da quale direzione si stia arrivando) sono in sostanza due Ghost Town, lo stesso non si può dire di Adrian, che nel corso degli anni è riuscita a mantenersi viva soprattutto per il fatto di essersi conquistata il ruolo di "midpoint" della route 66. I calcoli, complici i tratti più o meno nuovi della route 66, non sono facili, ma qui siamo "halfway", a metà strada. 1139 miglia, infatti, ci separano sia da Chicago che da Los Angeles.
Ontario and Glenrio (home of the "first and last motel" in Texas depending on which direction you're coming from) are basically ghost towns, Adrian has rather stayed alive especially because it got the role of "midpoint" of the route 66. Calculations are not so easy to make, but... yes, we're definitely halfway! 1139 miles, in fact, separates us both from Chicago and Los Angeles.
Il Midpoint Cafè è probabilmente il Cafè più famoso della mother road. I suoi dolci, da soli, valgono una fermata, ma a dirla tutta è qui che abbiamo mangiato il burger più buono della route 66.
The Midpoint Cafe is probably the most famous cafè of the mother road. Cakes here are amazing, but honestly we got the most delicious burger of the entire trip.
Da quanto siamo entrati in Texas spesso è capitato che la route 66 corrisponda con la Highway. Come nel tratto che conduce all'entrata nel "Great State of New Mexico", che non abbiamo mai nascosto essere, tra quelli visitati, il nostro preferito insieme all'Arizona. Torniamo, finalmente, a tre anni di distanza nel Land of Enchantment. Siamo appena entrati ed il cielo sembra già più grande...
Once in Texas the route 66 often corresponds with the highway 40. As the stretch that leads to the the "Great State of New Mexico," which is our favorite (along Arizona) among all the states we've visited. It's "Land of Enchantment" again after three years: and the sky already looks bigger ...
Se doveste chiedere a chi ha percorso le 2500 miglia di route 66 quale sia la città più bella beh... saranno in parecchi a rispondere Tucumcari, New Mexico. Qui la route 66 è ancora viva, i motel sono tutti funzionanti e ce n'è uno che ancora oggi fa sognare ogni viaggiatore. Il motel per eccellenza, quello che "se lo scrivi su google e lo vedi illuminato la sera ti vien voglia subito di partire". Il Blue Swallow motel. E' semplicemente stupendo.
If you ask those who have traveled the 2,500 miles of Route 66 which is the most beautiful city of the mother road well ... many of them will answer Tucumcari, New Mexico. Here route 66 is still alive, motels are all on business: one of them still makes every traveler dreams. The Blue Swallow motel. It's just amazing. Writing its name on google means "i wanna go there. Immediately".
Non abbiamo soggiornato qui solo perchè Tucumcari è troppo vicino ad Amarillo. E noi avevamo scelto di fermarci per la notte nella città texana.
We did not stay there just because Tucumcari is too close to Amarillo. And we've chosen to spend the night in the texan city.
Purtroppo i titolari non ci sono, questa volta niente storie, ma semplicemente ammirare l'auto posizionata fuori dalla hall o le camere vintage posizionate sul retro ci fa sognare. Una cosa è certa. Semmai dovessimo pernottare un giorno dalle parti di Tucumcari, lo faremo al blue swallow motel, uno dei cinque luoghi da vedere assolutamente lungo la route 66

Dall'altro lato della strada un altro simbolo di Tucumcari ci sta "chiamando". Il Tee Pee Curios, un souvenir shop a tinte... indiane. La sua forma particolare (capanna indiana) lo rende davvero unica. E' qui che incroceremo ancora i "nostri amici" australiani...
Just across the street there's another symbol of Tucumcari: The Tee Pee Curios, a souvenir shop in with its very famous tee pee shape. That makes it truly unique. In here we meet our "australian friends" for the second time...
Prima di lasciare Tucumcari facciamo una brevissima sosta al monumento della route 66, poi via verso sud.
Before leaving Tucumcari we make a quick stop at the monument of the route 66, then straight to the south.
Già, lasciamo per un paio di giorno la route che, seguendola, vi porterebbe ad Albuquerque passando per Santa Rosa e la sua "blue hole". Sarà proprio ad Albuquerque che la riprenderemo. Ora, invece, siamo diretti verso il profondo sud, quasi al confine messicano, in un'area dello stato che avevamo visitato già tre anni fa e che ci è sin da subito entrata nel cuore. Ci eravamo promessi "una sola deviazione dalla route 66" ed il jolly che abbiamo scelto di giocarci si chiama (ancora) White Sands. Il tratto che va da Tucumcari a Fort Sumner lungo la 209 (che poi diventa 252) è un qualcosa di incredibile. Siamo noi e la strada. Ogni tanto fa capolino qualche ranch, ma in linea di massima saranno quasi 200 chilometri di solitudine nel solito incantevole land of enchantment.
Yes, we are leaving the mother route for a couple of days. If you follow it, you will go straight to Albuquerque through Santa Rosa and its very famous "blue hole". We will resume the road righ in Albuquerque. Now we are heading to the deep south, close to the Mexican border, in an area of the state we had already visited three years ago. We promised "a single deviation from the route 66" and the wildcard we play is (again) the White Sands. The stretch from Tucumcari to Fort Sumner on the 209 (which becomes 252) is something amazing. It's just us, some ranch and the road: 200 kilometers alone in the land of enchantment.

Stiamo andando a Fort Sumner per un solo motivo. Il suo nome è Henry McCarthy, meglio noto come Billy The Kid. E' qui, infatti, che uno dei più grandi (probabilmente il più grande) fuorilegge della storia americana fu ucciso dallo sceriffo Pat Garrett in circostanze mai del tutto chiarite dopo essere fuggito dalla prigione in cui era rinchiuso dopo essere stato condannato all'impiccagione. Billy The Kid è l'unico ad essere stato nello stesso tempo sia fuorilegge che, incredibilmente, anche eroe popolare.
We're driving to Fort Sumner for one reason only. His name is Henry McCarthy, better known as Billy the Kid. In this town one of the most famous outlaws in American history was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in circumstances never fully clarified after escaping from the prison where he was held after being sentenced to hang. Billy The Kid is the only one that was at the same time both outlaws and even folk hero.
A Fort Sumner è visitabile il museo a lui dedicato e, soprattutto, la tomba, il vero "grave site", non quella che troverete all'interno del museo. Il Billy The Kid grave site è situato lungo Blly the kids road, tre miglia a est della città. Imboccate la "60", poi svoltate a sinistra lungo Billy the Kid Road e percorretela verso sud per tre miglia sino a raggiungere l'Old Fort Cemetery.
In Fort Sumner you can visit the museum dedicated to the outlaw, and especially the grave site, the "real grave site". There are, in fact, two grave sites, one located into the museum and the other one located in the Old Fort Cemetery. Billy The Kid grave site is located along the Billy the Kid road, three miles east of the city. Take the "60", then turn left down Billy the Kid Road and follow it south for three miles until you reach the Old Fort Cemetery.
Le ultime 84 miglia ci portano a Roswell, sede di tappa. Siamo nel sud est dello stato, in una città salita agli onori della cronaca il lontano 2 luglio 1947, quando un oggetto volante non identificato si schianta in un ranch distante settanta miglia a nord della città stessa. Il governo americano ha fornito almeno tre versioni dell'accaduto e la verità, con tutta probabilità, la sanno solo loro. Ma se mai gli alieni ci avessero fatto visita, this is the place. Nel 2007 il festival del sessantesimo anniversario dell'evento portò nella quinta città del New Mexico per numero di abitanti ben cinquantamila appassionati.
The last 84 miles lead to Roswell, south-east of New Mexico. It was the 2nd of July 1947, when an unidentified flying object crashed on a ranch located seventy miles north of the town. The US government has provided at least three versions of the incident and they it's the only one who knows the truth. Anyway, if ever aliens have visited us, this is the place. In 2007, the sixtieth anniversary festival brought in town fifty thousand fans.
Ah, se non siete particolarmente incuriositi da queste vicende o legati agli alieni in generale (nel cuore della città c'è l'Ufo Museum, imperdibile per gli amanti del genere), Roswell ha ben poco altro da offrire. Noi, infatti, siamo già con la testa al White Sands National Monument...
Well, if you're don't like aliens that much (in the heart of the downtown you'll find the world famous UFO Museum, a must for aliens' fan), Roswell has nothing more to offer. In fact we are already thinking about tomorrow: the White Sands National Monument ...
