L’avventura nel sud del New Mexico prosegue. La seconda giornata lontano dalla route 66 ci porterà a visitare per la seconda volta uno dei parchi più belli dell’intero sud ovest, talmente affascinante che… ci torniamo per la seconda volta dopo l’esperienza del 2013. Stiamo avvicinando a grandi falcate il sud dello stato attraverso la Mescalero Reservation in direzione Alamogordo e, ancor prima, Tularosa, per una veloce sosta alla chiesa missionaria St Francis Church, risalente al 1868.
The adventure continues in southern New Mexico. This is going to be the second day away from route 66 and the road will take us for the second time in our life (the first one in 2013) to one of the most beautiful parks in the whole southwest. We are approaching the deep south of the state through the Mescalero Reservation towards Alamogordo. There's a stop between the Mescalero Reservation and Alamogordo: the town of Tularos with its St Francis missionary church, dating back to 1868.
A nord di Alamogordo c’è invece un luogo che, per due “svalvolati” come noi due, è una sorta di paradiso. In un’area dello stato in cui i pistacchi sono una sorta di religione, ci fermiamo dal “re” del pistacchio, il McGinn’s Pistachio Tree Ranch. Ad accogliervi ci sarà niente meno che il pistacchio più grande del mondo.
In north of Alamogordo there's actually another place that two "acting nasty" like us can't really miss. In an area of the state where pistachios are a kind of religion, we are visiting the "king" of the pistachio, the McGinn's Pistachio Tree Ranch. Nothing less than the largest pistachio in the world will welcome you.
Lo shop è enorme. Sembra di essere stati catapultati in “Pistacchio Land”. Pistacchi di ogni tipo, alcuni inimmaginabili. E ovviamente anche la possibilità di testarli uno ad uno. Da quelli dolci, a quelli salati. E a quelli piccanti, essendo il Messico lontano poco più di cento chilometri. Avevamo segnato questa tappa come “tappa buchi” in attesa di arrivare alle White Sands, in realtà ci porterà via più di due ore.
The shop is huge. It seems to be at the "Pistachio Land." Pistachio nuts of all kinds. And of course also the possibility to taste them one by one. Sweet, salty and even spicy, because Mexico is just 100 miles far from here. We imagined this stage as a kind of "wasting time" before going to the White Sands National Monument. We were wrong. Actually it's a very funny place.
Fuori dal negozio, infatti, Marco nota un mini-trenino. C’è la possibilità con due dollari di visitare il ranch, un’occasione che non possiamo lasciarci sfuggire. La guida ci conduce prima nei vigneti e poi nelle immense piantagioni di pistacchi. Tra le tantissime curiosità che apprendiamo anche una del tutto particolare. C’è un solo “albero maschio” per centinaia e centinaia di alberi femmine.
Just out of the store, in fact, Marco notices a mini-train. You can visit the ranch (2 dollars fee), an opportunity that we can not miss. The guide takes us first in the vineyards and then in the vast plantations of pistachios. Among the many curiosities that we've learnt there's one completely unique. There is only one "male tree" for hundreds and hundreds of female trees.
Dopo aver pranzato con, ovviamente, il gelato… al pistacchio, riprendiamo la marcia verso il White Sands Missile Range Museum. Stiamo percorrendo la “70” in direzione Las Cruces, lasciando alla nostra destra il White Sands National Monument. Il confine è sempre più vicino e, in uno dei check point, siamo fermati dalla border patrol. Ci successe anche tre anni fa e, nel 2015, anche nel sud dell’Arizona. Passaporti e le solite domandine sul perché stiamo viaggiando nel sud del New Mexico, nulla ovviamente di cui temere.
After a quick lunch with, of course, pistachio ice cream, we are finally ready to leave the ranch and going to the White Sands Missile Range Museum. We are driving along the "70" towards Las Cruces, leaving to our right the White Sands National Monument. The border is getting closer and we are stopped by border patrol at one of the many check points. It happened also three years ago and, in 2015, also in southern Arizona. They ask for our passports and about our journey and why you are traveling in southern New Mexico.
Raggiungiamo il White Sands Missile Range, con il quale le cose andranno bene… ma non benissimo. Gli agenti che, previa consegna del passaporto e successivo rilascio di un permesso scritto, controllano le entrate ci prendono di mira, o almeno così a noi sembra. “Fate foto solo in una certa posizione, ovvero inquadrando l’ovest e mai l’est, l’auto rimane fuori. Si entra a piedi”. Obbligano poi Marco anche a cancellare una foto che aveva scattato al gate d’ingresso da molto lontano quando ancora eravamo nella nostra auto. E della quale si erano prontamente accorti. Su internet se ne trovano a centinaia scattate da turisti, ma l’ultima cosa che vorremmo fare è dar fastidio, intanto abbiamo capito che le regole qui sono chiare e severe.
The White Sands Missile Range appears in front of us. Thing, here, are not going very well. We have to show our passport to the agents and they will release a written permission. It seems that they are very strict with us. "You can just take pictures in certain position, framing the west and never the east, you can just go by walk and not with your car" agents says. They also force Marco to delete a photo he has just taken to the entrance gate from far away when we still were in our car. On the internet we've found hundreds of pictures taken by tourists to the gate, but the last thing we would do is to do or say something wrong. Rules here are clear and strict.
Il museo, che offre una parte esterna ed una interna, non è nulla di imperdibile anche se più “vero” rispetto a quanto trovammo a Cape Canaveral, in Florida. Dopo una ventina di minuti siamo già fuori. La verità è che l'abbiamo visitato perchè l'ingresso è gratuito...
The museum, which offers an outside section and an inside section, isn't one of the best museums we've ever seen even if it's more "real" than The Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Lasciato il Missile Range raggiungiamo finalmente il White Sands National Monument, il “land of enchantment” per eccellenza (ingresso 5 dollari, l’annual pass dei parchi è valido).
Left the Missile Range we finally reach the White Sands National Monument, the real "land of enchantment" (admission $ 5).
Il parco comprende un visitor center, dove potrete assistere alla proiezione di un filmato sulla storia delle White Sands e su come si sia formato questo deserto di gesso in un’arida area di 582 km2, un gift shop (dove poter noleggiare lo slittino per scendere dalle dune) e poi ovviamente il loop da percorrere in auto.
The White Sands National Monument includes a visitor center, where you can watch a movie about the history of the White Sands and how this gypsum desert has been created, a gift shop (where you can rent a toboggan to go down from the dunes) and then of course the loop.
Nothing has changed since we've been there three years ago: few tourists, and that feeling of being alone in the midst of these huge gypsum dunes. The only thing that has changed is the entrance fee (from $ 3 to $ 5). Also renting the toboggan ha become expensive ($ 18).
Scendere dalle dune con lo slittino (a dir la verità più un frisbee gigante che slittino) è un’esperienza da vivere all’interno del parco. E non preoccupatevi, non sarete gli unici: qui è un must.
Going down from the dunes on a sled is a truly unique experience. Don't worry, you will not be the only one: here is a must.
Il loop è facilmente percorribile con la propria autovettura, ovviamente a velocità moderata. I trail sono diversi, alcuni dei quali anche molto lunghi. Nel caso voleste farli vi consigliamo di avvisare il ranger dal visitor center delle vostre intenzioni.
The loop can be easily explored with your own car, just don't go fast. There are also many trails, some of them are very long and strenous. Please stop at the ranger station before hiking.
Two of the first trails you will encounter are the Playa Trail and Boardwalk interdune: the first is a short trail (0.3 miles) that leads to a small lake formed by rainwater. In summer it is obviously dry. The second one is a boardwalk through the dunes and the wild flowers: it will make you in touch with the White Sands life.
I trail più impegnativi sono il Dune Life Trail (1.5 km), ben segnalato da paletti arancioni ed il Blackcountry Camping (3.5 km), dove è inoltre possibile pernottare in tenda dopo aver ricevuto l’apposito pass dal ranger.
The most challenging are the Dune Life Trail (1 mile), well marked by orange posts and the Black Country Camping (2 miles), where you can also spend the night in your tent after receiving the appropriate pass from the ranger.
The Alikali Flat Trail eventually take visitors in the wildest section of the park, called The Heart (5.5 miles). The trail is marked by white posts. It 's very strenous and recommended to those who are in excellent physical condition.
Alle 19 prendiamo parte al Sunset Stroll insieme ad una trentina di turisti. Il Sunset Stroll è un trail che si effettua con il ranger a ridosso del tramonto per godere del cambio di luce sulle dune. Tanto per cambiare però il cielo nuvoloso (tre anni fa arrivò addirittura un flash flood), così anche questa volta dobbiamo rinunciare agli splendidi scenari del parco più bello del New Mexico.
The sunset stroll trail with the ranger starts at 7 pm. More than 30 visitors are following the ranger along the trail, waiting for the sunset. But today it's cloudy (it often happens at the White Sands), so we have to give up: we will never admire the sunset at the White Sands National Monument...
