The last day of the quick on the road in Georgia, Northern Florida and South Carolina, which on paper should have been just a transfer from Charleston to Charlotte, gave us many surprises (and unusual places) despite the bad weather that forced us to change our plans. Yes, because there was so much things to see and to do in the schedule (even a national park!), buti it was just too freezing to be in nature. Now, first things first, also because we've already learned that America always knows how to give something special. This was confirmed as soon as we left Charleston. We are in Summerville, about fifty miles east of South Carolina's main city, in a place renowned for its historical character, with 700 buildings registered in the National Register of Historic Places. But if you visit Summerville the reason is basically one and only one: its name is Mason ...
Mason chi? Il più grande tè dolce al mondo, the "World Largest Sweet Tee", che non poteva non trovarsi nella cittadina che il tè dolce l'ha inventato, Summerville, appunto. No, non siamo impazziti, Mason è ancor più di una religione nel profondo sud del South Carolina, soprattutto il National Iced Tea Day del 10 giugno del 2016, in seguito del quale Mason è stato inserito nel Guinness World Record non solo per la sua altezza (15 piedi), ma anche per la quantità di tè che può contenere al suo interno, ben 2524 galloni. Il suo nome, Mason, è un diminutivo di "mason jar", che in italiano possiamo tradurre con "barattolo", e pensate che per preparare 2524 di tè dolce sono stati impiegati SCE & G Natural Gas, 210 libbre di tè raccolte nella vicina piantagione di Charleston e 1700 libbre di Dixie Crystal, lo zucchero prodotto nel sud degli Stati Uniti.
Mason who? The world largest sweet tea, which is hosted by the town that invented the sweet tea, Summerville (South Carolina). No, we're not crazy. Mason is a kind of religion in the deep South of South Carolina, especially after the National Iced Tea Day held on June 10, 2016, the day when Mason was included in the Guinness World Record not just for his height (15 feet), but also for the amount of tea that can contain (2,524 gallons). Its name, Mason, is a diminutive of "mason jar". So what does it take to brew 2,524 gallons of sweet tea? The recording holding tea was brewed using SCE&G Natural Gas, 210 pounds of local tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation, 1,700 pounds of Dixie Crystals– the sugar of the south and a lot of local support.
Il problema è che Mason, non riusciamo a trovarlo. Le indicazioni raccolte su internet ci portano davanti al bellissimo "town hall", il municipio, ma dell'enorme bicchiere di tè nemmeno l'ombra. Non abbiamo altra alternativa che entrare negli uffici, impauriti, e chiedere di lui, il mitico Mason. "Mi scusi, non vorremmo disturbare, ma noi staremmo cercando... Mason". "Non preoccupatevi, arrivo subito, intanto potete tenere queste due tazze". I dubbi aumentano, vuoi vedere che Mason è una leggenda e l'unico tè è quello che berremo? No, Mason esiste. Eccome se esiste.
The problem here is that we are not able to find Mason! The indications collected on the internet take us in front of the beautiful "town hall", but we cannot see even a trace of the huge cup of tea. We have no alternative but to enter the offices, a little scared, and ask for the legendary Mason. "Excuse me, we don't want to bother you, but we are looking for ... Mason". "Do not worry, I'll be right there in a minute, in the meantime you can keep these two cups". And our doubts grow all the more intense, is Mason a legend? No, Mason does exist and we're about to meet him!

Nascosto in una piccola vietta a destra del municipio. Nel 2018 il festival si terrà il terzo giovedì di settembre (20). L'America non smette letteralmente mai di sorprenderci.

L'emozione per la solita splendida gentilezza degli americani ci fa dimenticare per qualche minuto che oggi, con condizioni meteo diverse, sarebbe stato il grande giorno del Congaree National Park, l'unico parco nazionale del South Carolina. L'avevamo preparato nel dettaglio, per questo qualcosina sul parco vogliamo comunque raccontarvela, nella speranza che possa essere d'aiuto ai futuri viaggiatori che si avventureranno nel cuore delle due "Carolinas". Cosa vedere al Congaree National Park? Innanzitutto parliamo di quella che un tempo era la casa ed il terreno di caccia della tribù di indiani Congaree, dalla quale prende il nome, e che oggi è diventato un parco visitatissimo da chi ama camminare, fare bird watching o Kayak. Nonostante il disboscamento del 1900, questo parco ha conservato il suo fascino e la bellezza dei suoi paesaggi, dominati da alberi antichissimi e giganteschi, tra i più alti del Nord America. A dominare è la vegetazione, tra conifere e cipressi, con gli incantevoli fiumi (e ruscelli) che spesso straripano (in primavera ed autunno) a causa delle intense precipitazioni, ma nello stesso tempo aiutano le imponenti foreste ad auto-alimentarsi. Il più bel trail è sicuramente il "Boardwalk Loop Trail" (non segnalato), un percorso di 2.4 miglia su una passerella che prende il via al Harry Hampton Visitor Center.
The emotion for the usual splendid Americans' kindness makes us forget for a few minutes that today, with different weather conditions, was supposed to be the great day of the Congaree National Park, the only national park in South Carolina. We had prepared it in detail, so we want to tell you a little bit about the park, in the hope that it helps future travelers who will venture into the heart of the two "Carolinas". What to see at Congaree National Park? First of all, let's talk about what once was the home and hunting ground of the Congaree Indian tribe, from which the national park takes its name, that today has become a park visited by people who love hiking, bird watching or kayaking. Despite the deforestation of 1900, this park has retained its charm and the beauty of its landscapes, dominated by ancient and gigantic trees, among the highest in North America. The vegetation is amazing, between conifers and cypresses, with enchanting rivers (and streams) that often overflow (in spring and autumn) due to heavy rainfall, but at the same time help the imposing forests to self-feed. The most beautiful trail is definitely the "Boardwalk Loop Trail" (not marked), a 2.4 mile trail on a boardwalk that starts at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center.

Una volta giunti a Columbia, ad attenderci c'è un'altra particolare attrazione anche se, va detto, meno affascinante di Mason. Al 1400 di Taylor Street, non lontano dal downtown di una città decisamente più grande rispetto alla piccola Summerville, c'è Busted Plug, che altro non è che l'idrante più grande al mondo. Nel giro di poco più di 100 km abbiamo scomodato per ben due volte il libro dei Guinness World Record. Busted Plug è la creazione di un'artista locale non ha alcun significato particolare (o legame con la città) ed anche la posizione in cui è posto, ovvero a ridosso di un parcheggio, non lo rende così appetibile come invece è stato Mason. Però è decisamente grande!
Once we reach Columbia, there is another special attraction waiting for us, even if, it must be said, less fascinating than Mason. At 1400 Taylor Street, not far from the downtown of a city definitely bigger than Summerville, there is Busted Plug, which is nothing but the largest hydrant in the world. Within just over 100 km we have bummed the Guinness World Record book twice. Busted Plug is the creation of a local artist and has no particular significance (or link with the city) and is located close to a parking lot. It isn't definitely as appealing as Mason, but it's really really huge!
Nella risalita verso il North Carolina e dunque verso Charlotte, avrete la possibilità di avventurarvi nuovamente nella natura, spesso incontaminata, del South Carolina. Un esempio su tutti è la cittadina di Kershaw, un connubio tra storia e natura, grazie al Forty Acre Rock - Heritage Preserve. Un facile sentiero di 1.2 miglia vi condurrà in cima a questa roccia che occupa 11 acri e non 40 come il nome lascerebbe intendere. Attraverserete cascate, caverne ed anche una diga prima di raggiungere la cima, dove potrete ammirare una piscina naturale. Merita una sosta anche la piccola Lancaster, se non altro per ammirare il suo City Hall ed il Court House. Il municipio cittadino, uno dei più belli dell'intero stato, è situato in una dimora del 1830 ed è conosciuto anche come Leroy Springs House (angolo tra Catawba Street e Gay Street), il Lancaster County House (104 N Main St) è stato invece il sito di uno degli ultimi processi alle streghe negli Stati Uniti.
On the way back to North Carolina and then to Charlotte, you will have the chance to venture back into the often uncontaminated nature of South Carolina. An example is the town of Kershaw, a combination of history and nature, thanks to the Forty Acre Rock - Heritage Preserve. An easy 1.2-mile trail will lead you to the top of this rock that occupies 11 acres and not 40 as the name would imply. You will cross waterfalls, caverns and even a dike before reaching the top, where you can admire a natural pool. Also the town of Lancaster worth a quick stop, just to admire the City Hall and the Court House. The town hall, one of the most beautiful in the entire state, is located in an 1830s residence and is also known as Leroy Springs House (corner between Catawba Street and Gay Street), the Lancaster County House (104 N Main St) has been the site of one of the last witch trials in the United States.

Sorprese finite? Macchè. Non lontano dal confine tra South e North Carolina sorge su una collinetta la cittadina di Fort Mill. No. Non siamo qui per il suo carinissimo downtown, delimitato da Main Street, ma per un altro motivo. E per la terza volta nell'arco di poche ore, è ancora il Guinness World Record ad ottenere la copertina della giornata.
Surprises ended? No, they don't! Not far from the border between South and North Carolina, there's the small town of Fort Mill. No. We're not here for its nice downtown, bordered by Main Street, but for another reason. For the third time in a few hours, it is still the Guinness World Record to get the cover of the day.

Dove siamo? All'interno di un piccolo negozio diventato una mecca per gli amanti del piccante, il Pucker Butt Pepper Company. E' la casa del Smokin Ed's Carolina Reaper un particolare peperoncino prodotto nella vicina Rock Hill dal fondatore, presidente, Mad-Scientist e Chef Smokin Ed Currie. Avrete intuito che non è un peperoncino come tutti gli altri, misura infatti 1.5 milioni nella Scoville Heat Unit Scale.
Where are we? Inside a small shop which have become a mecca for spicy lovers, called the Pucker Butt Pepper Company. It is the home of Smokin Ed's Carolina Reaper, which is a super hot pepper developed by Founder, President, Mad-Scientist & Chef Smokin' Ed Currie in his Rock Hill, South Carolina greenhouse.
Un qualcosa di neanche lontanamente immaginabile, basti pensare che il tabasco misura "solo" 50.000 SHUs. Ah, il Carolina Reaper nel 2013 è entrato nel World Guinness Book come il peperoncino più piccante al mondo e, nel 2018, dopo che era sceso al numero sei nella speciale classifica, è tornato ad essere il più piccante al mondo. Measuring over 1.5 million on the Scoville Heat Unit Scale, Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reaper was awarded the Guinness World Record in November of 2013. Something not even remotely imaginable. Just think that the tabasco measures "only" 50,000 SHUs. In 2018, The Carolina Reaper is again at number one in the special ranking. The taste of the various sauces is free of charge. We tried some of them, but we did not dare test the dead Squeez'n, the most spicy of them all.
Tuttavia un'idea di quanto possa essere piccante ce la siamo fatta e la conferma l'abbiamo avuta una volta rientrati in Italia, quando abbiamo assaggiato quelli che apparentemente sembravano dei normalissimi peanut al miele e peperoncino acquistati in negozio. Mai provata prima un'esperienza simile. Erano favolosi, ma per dieci minuti addirittura abbiamo sentito bruciore persino alle orecchie. Se doveste passare da Fort Mill, South Carolina, non mancate il Pucker Butt Pepper Company!
However, once in Italy, we immediately realized how spicy it can be. How? We tasted what apparently looked like normal honey and chili's peanuts bought at the Pucker Butt Pepper Company. We've never had an experience like that. They were amazing, but we felt a burning sensation in all our body ( even our ears were burning!) for at least ten minutes. If you are planning to go to Fort Mill, South Carolina, do not miss the Pucker Butt Pepper Company!
La giornata la concludiamo a Charlotte, dove il giorno successivo prenderemo il volo che ci riporterà a casa. La "città regina", come viene soprannominata, è la seconda degli Stati Uniti per numero di banche dietro solamente a New York, ed è uno dei principali poli finanziari del Nord America.
We end the day in Charlotte, where the next day we will take the flight that take us back home. The "queen city", as it is nicknamed, is the second largest in the United States by number of banks just after New York, and is one of the major financial centers in North America.
Ma è anche la città della Nascar, con la sua "Hall of Fame" e nel complesso ci è sembrata una di quelle metropoli da vivere più che da visitare. Anche se, tuttavia, il suo downtown (delimitato da Tryonn Street), ricco di grattacieli è decisamente carino e fotogenico. Un'altra di quelle città americane dove val la pena passare, un altro viaggio (il dodicesimo) che ci ha fatto innamorare di quel luogo magico chiamato Stati Uniti d'America...
But it is also the city of the Nascar, with its "Hall of Fame" and on the whole it looks like one of those metropolis "to live" more than "to visit". Although its downtown (bordered by Tryonn Street), full of skyscrapers, is decidedly cute and photogenic. Another of those American cities which worth a stop, another trip (the twelfth) that made us fall in love with that magical place called United States of America ...
