Quando si parla di Stati Uniti è sempre difficile dire quale sia stato il viaggio più bello. Ogni luogo è particolare, ogni stato è diverso dall'altro. E poi, come possiamo compararlo alla route 66, la madre di tutti i viaggi? Eppure, i poco più di venti giorni spesi tra Kauai, Northern California e Oregon non li dimenticheremo facilmente, in quel paradiso chiamato "ovest statunitense" che continua a regalarci emozioni incredibili. No, non faremo classifiche, ma la maschera dobbiamo gettarla subito: l'on the road 2017 è stato sicuramente il più avventuroso e adrenalinico di sempre. Kauai, la terza isola delle Hawaii che abbiamo visitato, ci ha letteralmente catapultati in un'altra dimensione, abbiamo conosciuto una California meno turistica, ma decisamente affascinante... e poi l'Oregon, semplicemente il più bel stato americano, Hawaii escluse ovviamente. Sì, stiamo correndo troppo. Andiamo con ordine. Sfruttando un "errore prezzo" sul volo per gli Stati Uniti (300 euro a/r) facciamo tappa a San Francisco provenendo da Nizza (il volo di andata, ma soprattutto quello di ritorno, saranno un calvario, ma a quel prezzo...), dove spenderemo un giorno pieno prima di volare nuovamente verso l'Aloha State.
When it comes to the United States, it's always difficult to say which has been the most beautiful trip. Every place is particular, each state is different from the other. Well, then, how can we compare this trip to the Route 66, the mother of all the travels? Anyway, we will not easily forget the twentytwo days spent in Kauai, Northern California and Oregon, in a paradise called the "american west" which keeps giving us amazing emotions. No, we will not rank it, but we have to tell immediately the truth: the 2017 on the road has been definitely the most adventurous and adrenaline ever. Kauai, the third island of Hawaii we have visited, has literally catapulted us into another dimension, we have been to the less touristy and natural California, and then... the great state of Oregon, simply the most beautiful american state (Hawaii are obviously excluded). Yes, we're running too far. Let's start with a flash back: taking advantage of a "price mistake" on the flight from Nice to San Francisco (300 euros roundtrip) we stop in "Frisco" for a full day before flying back to the Aloha State.

San Francisco la conosciamo bene. E' proprio a "Frisco" che, nel lontano 2011, scattò la scintilla con gli Stati Uniti. Era il quinto giorno del primo viaggio negli Usa e, a dirla tutta, volevamo tornarcene a casa, sopraffatti da quell'immensità che solo il west statunitense può offrire. Poi arrivammo a San Francisco e cambiò letteralmente tutto. E ovviamente ci "ammalammo d'America". Tutto sommato, di acqua sotto i ponti da quel giorno ne è passata...
We know San Francisco pretty well. Right in "Frisco", in 2011, we felt in love with the United States of America. It was the fifth day of the very first trip to the US and, just to be clear, we wanted to go home, overwhelmed by the immensity that only the american west can offer. Then we arrived in San Francisco and everything literally changed. We immediately "got sick of America". All in all, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge...

We can just spend one day in San Francisco. This means that we have to run. We will see some of the "sacred" places of the most important city in Northern California and add a few goody that we missed during the first trip. The time zone helps us and, despite the usual cold (morning and evening) that makes San Francisco special, we are already ready to walk along the city hills towards Alcatraz Landing, not far from the famous Pier 39, the tourist pier of the city. In una quindicina di minuti buoni il ferry ci porta sulla minuscola isola di Alcatraz, distante due chilometri da San Francisco. E' la nostra prima tappa dei sette luoghi che visiteremo a San Francisco. Nonostante l'immancabile nebbiolina sia lo skyline di "Frisco" che il "bay bridge" si riescono intravedere.
The ferry will take you to the island in about fifteen minutes. Alcatraz is a very small island located 1.3 miles north of San Francisco. That's the first stop of the seven places we are going to visit in San Francisco. Despite the unmistakable fog, both the skyline of "Frisco" and the "bay bridge" can be seen from the island.
Ah, Alcatraz, intesa come isola, mette davvero i brividi. Il solo pensiero che le famiglie delle guardie vivessero qui, a pochissimi metri dalla prigione, al freddo e avvolti nella nebbia, è un qualcosa di ancor più inquietante.
Well, Alcatraz, as a island, really makes you the shivers. Just thinking about the families of the prison's guard who used to live there, just a few yards from the prison, the cold, the fog, is something even more disturbing.
Alcatraz, intesa invece come prigione, la si visita in un paio d'ore. All'ingresso riceviamo l'audio-guida in italiano che non solo fornisce tutte le indicazioni sulla storia della prigione, ma indica anche una sorta di percorso da seguire per visitarla al meglio. E' impressionante il silenzio che regna all'interno delle mura. Tutti sono intenti ad ascoltare la guida ed osservare i luoghi dove è stata scritta la storia della prigione, ciò che l'ha resa e leggendaria e portata sino ad Hollywood. Perchè in quello che a tutti gli effetti avrebbe dovuto essere il carcere di massima sicurezza più rigido al mondo, la fuga di Frank Morris e dei fratelli Anglin non ha fatto altro che alimentarne il mito.
Alcatraz, the prison, can be visited in a couple of hours. At the entrance we receive the audio guide (Italian language) that not only provides all the information about the history of the prison, but also indicates a kind of path to follow to visit it at its best. The silence that reigns inside the walls is impressive. Everyone is listening to the guide and watching the places where the story of the prison was written, what made it legendary and brought it even to Hollywood.

Una visita a San Francisco che si rispetti non può tuttavia prescindere anche da una passeggiata lungo il Pier 39, il molo turistico della città. Costruito nel 1978, ospita negozi anche stravaganti come quello "per i mancini", ristoranti (Bubba Gump su tutti), alcune giostre per bambini e... anche i leoni marini. Già, ci sono anche loro, spiaggiati proprio a ridosso del molo. Un po' troppo commerciale, a dir la verità, ma un must per i turisti sostanzialmente sin dal giorno della sua costruzione.
If you visit San Francisco, well, you can not miss a stroll along the world famous Pier 39, the city's tourist pier. Yeah, you can see them too, stranded just down the pier. A little too commercial, to tell the truth, but a must for tourists basically since the day of its construction.
We get a kind of tram right in front of the Pier 39 heading to the intersection between the 17th street and Castro street (45' minutes ride). This is the heart of Castro, one of the best neighborhoods of the city of San Francisco. We are in a location known as the heart of the gay community of the city. The biggest in the United States. Born as a Scandinavian and then Irish immigration district, Castro came to prominence during the 60's when the early hippie community and then the gay community have been attracted by the breath of freedom that has always distinguished the city on the bay.

Non lontano da Castro e raggiungibile con una camminata di una mezz'oretta, c'è un altro splendido quartiere, forse il più bello: Haight - Asbury, con le splendide case vittoriane. Noi siamo diretti ad Alamo Square, lungo Steiner Street: la serie di case colorate denominate "Painted Ladies" sono tra le più fotografate dell'intera città. Ed ammirarle dal piccolo parco posto di fronte le rende ancora più affascinanti. Più di 70 tra film e serie tv sono passati da qui e, per viverci, occorre disporre di un portafoglio molto largo. Sono, infatti, i manager delle grandi aziende che operano nella vicina Silicon Valley (google, microsoft...) ad essere i proprietari delle più belle case vittoriane in quel di San Francisco.
Not far from Castro and reachable by a half hour walk, there is another beautiful neighborhood, perhaps the most beautiful: Haight - Asbury, with the beautiful Victorian houses. We head to Alamo Square along Steiner Street: the series of colorful homes called "Painted Ladies" are among the most photographed of the whole city. In front of them there's a beautiful park and many people drink a coffee or read a book with a beautiful view: the "painted ladies". Il nostro viaggio nel cuore di San Francisco prosegue lungo Grove Street prima, dove incrociamo il Municipio, e poi Market Street. Siamo nella zona decisamente più commerciale e turistica della città. All'incrocio con Powell Street intravediamo un gran numero di turisti: sono tutti qui per il Cable Car. O meglio, per il Cable Car Turnaround, una piattaforma sulla quale i Cable Car, i famosi tram di San Francisco, ruotano e cambiano direzione. Se il Pier 39 l'abbiamo definito un po' troppo "commerciale", qui va anche peggio. Ma, tutto sommato, anche questa è San Francisco.Our trip to the heart of San Francisco continues along Grove Street, where we encounter the City Hall, and then Market Street. Il Dragon Gate, un altro dei simboli di San Francisco, significa che abbiamo raggiunto China Town. Non una China Town qualsiasi, ma la più grande al di fuori del "celeste impero". Sembra davvero di essere in Cina. Grant Avenue è la via turistica, condita da negozi su misura per i visitatori, mentre Stockton Street è decisamente più autentica: una sorta di "mini Hong Kong" con i suoi prodotti, i mercati del pesce, i negozi e i ristoranti.
The Dragon Gate, another San Francisco's symbols, means we've just reached China Town. This is not just a China Town, this is the biggest one outside Asia. It really seems to be in China. Grant Avenue is the tourist destination, with many shops and a lot of visitors, while Stockton Street is definitely more authentic: a kind of "mini Hong Kong" with its products, fish markets, shops and restaurants.
Abbiamo camminato parecchio e la fatica nel salire e scendere le ripidissime colline di San Francisco comincia a farsi sentire. Per l'ultimo dei sette luoghi che visiteremo a San Francisco scegliamo di sfruttare il bus. La linea è la 91, saliamo a Sutter St & Kearny St e scendiamo a North Point St & Larkin St. Sì, perchè prima di dirigerci a Russian Hill, abbiamo l'illuminazione. E' tardo pomeriggio ed il fuso italiano si fa sentire: qui serve un dolcino. Si va da Ghirardelli. Ghirardelli, una delle principali marche di cioccolato statunitense, ma di chiare origini italiane (Rapallo, Liguria). Proprio il signor Domenico Ghirardelli nel 1852 fondò l'azienda che, in Ghirardelli Square, a due passi dal mare, offre ora un carinissimo centro commerciale laddove fino agli anni sessanta sorgeva lo stabilimento. Ghirardelli per noi significa sin dal primo impatto con gli Usa "cioccolatini gratis". Anche stavolta non ci sbagliamo. All'entrata del negozio la gentile commessa ce ne regala uno a testa. Ah, ovviamente faremo anche il secondo giro, perchè saremo ormai "americani", ma il sangue è sempre... italiano. Intanto God bless Ghirardelli.
Walking along the San Francisco's hills is not easy. Definitely that's not easy! You'll end filling tired. This is why we take the bus (line 91, from Sutter St and Kearny St to North Point St & Larkin st) to get to the last stop of the day, Russian Hill. Anyway, before reaching the famous neighborhood there's another quick stop. It's late afternoon and we're getting hungry: which is the best thing to do? Going to Ghirardelli is the answer. Ghirardelli is one of the leading brands of American chocolate, but with clear Italian origins (Rapallo, Liguria). In1852, Mr Domenico Ghirardelli founded the company that, in Ghirardelli Square, a few steps from the sea, now offers a very beautiful shopping center where once the factory was established. Ghirardelli means to us (since the first impact with the United States) "free chocolates". At the entrance of the shop a nice lady is offering a free taste of a chocolate, we weren't wrong!Well, of course, a second round is a must. Because we're now "Americans", but our blood is still ... Italian. Meanwhile, God bless Ghirardelli.
Affrontare le ultime salite della giornata ora appare meno impervio. C'è ancora uno dei luoghi sacri di "Frisco", la mitica Russian Hill lungo Lombard Street, una delle strade più incredibili al mondo. Una serie di bizzarre e strette curve percorse in un solo senso di marcia (scendendo) l'hanno resa "the world’s crookedest street", la strada più tortuosa al mondo. La vegetazione e le bellissime case poste al suo fianco non fanno altro che renderla ancor più affascinante. Non a caso sono tantissimi i turisti che ogni giorno accorrono ai suoi piedi per ammirarla.
We can now handle the last climbs of the day. There is still one of the sacred places of "Frisco" to visit, the legendary Russian Hill along Lombard Street, one of the most amazing streets in the world. A series of bizarre and narrow curves that run in just one direction (going down) made it "the world's crookedest street". The street, the vegetation and the beautiful houses at its side call every day thousands of tourist.
In un amen è già sera. Domani mattina, molto presto, dovremo dirigerci ad Oakland: li ci aspetta il volo per Kauai. E' l'occasione giusta per sperimentare In-N-Out_burger, uno dei tanti fast food presenti negli Stati Uniti. In tanti ce ne hanno parlato molto bene e non possiamo che confermare. Anche se "5 Guys" e soprattutto "Shake Shack" restano in cima nel nostro ranking. Ah, mancherebbe ancora il "Golden Gate": l'appuntamento con il ponte più bello al mondo è rimandato di una ventina di giorni...
It's already evening. Tomorrow, early in the morning, we will have to head to Oakland, waiting for our flight to Kauai, Hawaii. That's the perfect opportunity to experience In-N-Out_burger, one of the many fast foods in the United States. We've been told that they offer a good burger and we can just confirm that. Although "5 Guys" and especially "Shake Shack" are still on top of our ranking. Well, we are not missing the "Golden Gate" bridge : the appointment with the world's most beautiful bridge is just postponed...
