The "six miles of waterfalls", probably the most scenic part of the entire Oregon. Once we've reached the northern limit of the state and the Washington State border, it is time to follow the Columbia River course and drive west towards Portland, Oregon's "main city" and along with Seattle and Vancouver (Canada), reference point of the geographic area called Pacific Northwest.

Ogni curva è interessante e non mancano i view point da cartolina. A partire dal Rowena Crest View Point, situato ad ovest dell'omonima città. La strada s'inerpica all'interno della Tom McCall Preserve sino ad arrivare al Rowena Crest, il punto più alto. Parcheggiate l'auto nell'enorme piazzale ed avventuratevi in uno dei due trail nella riserva naturale. Il McCall Point Hike è considerato un "moderate trail", con i suoi 1070 piedi di dislivello ed le oltre 3.5 miglia. Più semplice invece il Rowena Plateau Trail, lungo un miglio con e con 100 piedi di dislivello. E' considerato un "easy trail".
Every curve is interesting and there are many view points on the road. Starting from the Rowena Crest View Point, located to the west of the homonymous city. The road climbs within the Tom McCall Preserve until you reach the Rowena Crest, the highest point. Park your car in the huge parking lot and venture into one of the two trails in the natural preserve. The McCall Point Hike is considered a "moderate trail" with its 1070 feet of elevation gain and it's 3.5 miles long. The Rowena Plateau Trail is definitely easier: just 1 mile long and 100 feet of elevation gain. It is considered an "easy trail".
Ma se, come noi, siete di corsa, basterà la visuale a disposizione per dare un senso alla deviazione. Da una parte il Columbia River, dall'altra la "Historic Columbia River Highway". Ah, il Rowena Crest View Point è uno dei luoghi preferiti dagli oregoniani che vogliono chiedere la mano alla propria futura moglie. E, tutto sommato, come dar loro torto?
But if you're in a rush like us, just the view point will worth the trip to Rowena. On one side the Columbia River, on the other one the "Historic Columbia River Highway". Well, the Rowena Crest View Point is one of the oregonian's favorite for proposals. All in all, they got a point there.
The way down will take you to what is definitely Oregon's hallmark, along with Crater Lake: the 6 miles of waterfalls, a series of picturesque waterfalls along the Columbia Gorge, a beautiful "corridor" along the Cascade Range. Forget the quiet we've talked about in the previous days, this place can just be compared to Yosemite National Park, especially during week end. It's really crowded. You'll have just to choose which your favourite falls is, and the stronger your desire to get into the wild nature (even hiking very long trails), the more you will be rewarded by natural shows with very few equal.

La scelta non è facile, noi anche per questioni di tempo ci limitiamo a visitare "solo" tre delle tante cascate: le Multnomah Falls, le Oneonta Falls e, grazie al consiglio di un ranger, le Latourell Falls, che preferiamo alle Bridal Veil Falls. La prime che affrontiamo sono le Oneonta Falls. Non è così immediato intuire quale sia il sentiero da percorrere, anche perchè noi siamo diretti alle Lower Oneonta Falls, che per tutti sono "le cascate dove ci si bagna". Esatto, ci si bagna e non poco. Il percorso non è lungo (poco più di mezzo miglio), ma il sentiero è molto impegnativo (e scivoloso), tra alberi ammassati e rocce. Ma dopo le avventure di Kauai nulla ormai ci spaventa.
The choice is not easy and we have little time. This is why we decide to visit "only" three of the many waterfalls: the Multnomah Falls, the Oneonta Falls and, thanks to the ranger's advice, the Latourell Falls, which we prefer to Bridal Veil Falls. The first one we face is the Oneonta Falls. It is not so straightforward to guess which path we've to hike, also because we are heading to the Lower Oneonta Falls, which for all is where....you get wet! Exactly, you'll get soaked. The hike is definitely not very long (just half a mile), but the trail is very demanding (and slippery), between crowded trees and rocks. Anyway, after the Kauai's adventures nothing scares us anymore.
The hike into the Canyon is gorgeous, as well as getting across the stream and its high water, thanks to the exceptional amount of rain which has fallen over the last few days. An almost mystical experience, with the final gift called Lower Oneonta Falls which appear almost unexpectedly. If you want to reach the Upper Oneonta Falls, there's another trail, 4.9 miles long.
Il secondo stop sono le sin troppo inflazionate Multnomah Falls, un autentico spettacolo della natura che tuttavia perdono parecchio del loro fascino a causa dell'enorme mole di turisti che la prendono d'assalto. E' un'autentica caccia al parcheggio, che terminerà solo dopo mezz'ora ed in seguito ad un appostamento degno dei migliori film holliwoodiani.
The second stop is the too much of a scene Multnomah Falls, an authentic spectacle of nature that nevertheless loses a lot of its charm because of the many tourists which visit the falls every day. It's a real hunt for a parking lot, which will end only after half an hour and after a stakeout worthy of the best Hollywoodian movies.
Alte circa 187 metri, le Multnomah Falls sono caratterizzate dal Benson Bridge, posizionato tra i due salti. Il ponte, costruto nel 1914, permette ai visitatori di godere della bellezza delle cascate da una posizione ancor più privilegiata rispetto a quella iniziale, sul fondo della cascata stessa. Il trail, che attraversa il Benson Bridge, termina in cima dopo oltre due miglia di camminata (in salita) ed è considerato un "moderate trail".
About 59 feet tall, the Multnomah Falls are characterized by the Benson Bridge, located between the two waterfalls. The bridge, built in 1914, allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the falls from an even more privileged position than the original one, located at the bottom of the waterfall. The trail, which crosses the Benson Bridge, ends at the top after a 2 miles hike (uphill) and is considered a "moderate trail".
Il salto generato dalle acque dei fiumi che poi convergono nel Columbia è il più alto dell'Oregon e il secondo di tutti gli States. Nel momento in cui scriviamo (novembre 2017) l'intero trail è chiuso e molte delle aree delle "6 miglia delle cascate" sono chiuse a causa dei violentissimi incendi che nel periodo estivo hanno messo in ginocchio l'Oregon ed in particolare la "Columbia River Gorge".
The jump generated by river waters that converge into the Columbia River is the highest in Oregon and the second in all the States. By the time we write (November 2017), the whole trail is closed and many of the "6 miles of waterfalls" are closed due to the devastating fires occurred in Oregon (and in particular the "Columbia River Gorge ") in september.
La terza ed ultima cascata che visitiamo è la Latourell Falls. Un brevissimo trail della durata di dieci minuti conduce alla base della cascata, mentre un trail più impegnativo le circumnaviga permettendovi di ammirarle dall'alto. Nel caso in cui sceglieste di visitare le Bridal Veil Falls, il trail sarà altrettanto semplice (0.5 miglia). Ma entrambe le cascate, a nostro parere, non reggono il confronto con le Oneonta e le Multnomah.
The third and last waterfall we visit is the "Latourell Falls". A short ten-minute trail leads to the bottom of the waterfall, while a more challenging trail allows you to admire them from above. In case you choose to visit the Bridal Veil Falls, the trail will be also very easy (0.5 miles). But both falls, in our opinion, are not as fascinating as the Oneonta and Multnomah falls.
Before leaving the Historic Columbia River Highway do not miss the Crown Point Scenic Corridor with its Vista House. It was built in 1916 at the same time as Highway 30 (what is now the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, and the only way to reach Crown Point). The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of the Columbia Gorge. The octagonal building with its green ceramic tile roof houses a museum, gift shop and interpretive display of historic and geologic points of interest in the Gorge. The view of the Columbia River and the Columbia Gorge is amazing, but if you are looking for a beautiful view of the "Vista House", take your car and drive a mile toward Portland and stop at the Women's Forum view point.

La città di riferimento della "Columbia Gorge" è Troutdale, che vi accoglierà con il suo cartello di benvenuta che recita "Troutdale, Gateway to the Gorge", ma noi è a Portland che siamo diretti. Abbiamo (solo) mezza giornata da spendere nella "city of roses", perchè è vero che le "cose da vedere a Portland" non sono poi moltissime, ma città principe dell'Oregon rimane una città incantevole.
The reference town of the Columbia Gorge is Troutdale, "the gateway to the gorge". Anyway, we're heading to Portland to spend the second part of the day. Why only half a day in the city of roses? Well, because there aren't many things to see in Portland, altough Oregon's main city is still a lovely city.

E' in crescita, estremamente vivibile, non è snob come Seattle,dove intenzionalmente gli abitanti non indossano la cravatta, ed è forse la città americana più adatta ad una vita di gruppo. La qualità della vita di Portland è una delle più alte degli interi Stati Uniti (dal punto di vista dei servizi sociali lo è di sicuro). Insomma, più che visitarla, a Portland ci si dovrebbe trasferire. Proprio partendo da questo presupposto abbiamo dedicato poco tempo alla città, cercando però di coglierne il più possibile le sfumature, comportandoci insomma con dei "Portlandiani". Dimenticatevi allora del "cosa vedere a Portland", perchè oggi la vivremo. E allora ve la raccontiamo come farebbe un abitante di Portland, portandovi non nei luoghi turistici (comunque pochini), ma in quelli dove "la gente del posto" spende le proprie giornate. Giornate che iniziano con un caffè da Dutch Bros, in sostanza lo "Starbucks" del Pacific Northwest. E, dopo una decina di minuti spesi in città era già scattata la scintilla. "E' la prima volta da noi? Bene, allora questo ve lo offriamo noi". Parole e musica del manager di Dutch Bros nel quale ci siamo fermati. Come fai a non amarli? Se cercaste invece un qualcosa di più "local" Stumptown coffee (128 SW 3rd Ave) oppure Random Order Coffeehouse & Bakery (1800 NE Alberta St) faranno al caso vostro.
Portland is a boomtown, it's extremely livable and not as snoby as Seattle, where locals intentionally do not wear a tie. Probably the best American city for a group social life, Portland's quality of life is also one of the highest in the entire United States. In short, rather than visit it, you should move to Portland! Starting from this assumption, we have't devoted a great deal of space picking up on the emotional nuances around here. Forget then about "what to see and do in Portland", because we haven't visited the city, we've just lived it, just like a local would do. We haven't been to the tourist places (very few), we went where locals spend their days. Days that in Portland begin with a coffee at Dutch Bros, basically the "Starbucks" of the Pacific Northwest. Well, just after a dozen minutes spent in the city, we can already feel the brotherly love "Is this the first time at Dutch Bros?". "Yes, it is". "Well, perfect. This coffee is on me". Words and music by the manager of Dutch Bros located at 2057 W Burnside St. If you are looking for something "local", stop at Stumptown coffee (128 SW 3rd Ave) or Random Order Coffeehouse & Bakery (1800 NE Alberta St).
Walking around downtown, you will be looking for something sweet that goes with coffee. What better way to get a delicious donut from the most famous donut seller of the entire Oregon? Well, of course we are talking about Voodoo Doughnut (22 SW erd Ave) with its famous bacon and maple bar donut. That's so good. Your other alternative is to go to Pip's Original Doughnut and don't forget to ask for the "secret menu". For those with the most discriminating of tastes, we recommend Pix Patisserie (2225 E Burnside St).

Siamo all'angolo tra W Burnside Street e la NW 10th Street, all'interno di quella che a tutti gli effetti è la città dei libri.
Leaving Pioneer Courthouse Square and then downtown, you will cross one of the "sacred" place for the people of Portland, the Powell's City of Books, the largest independent bookshop in the world. It's located on the corner between W Burnside Street and NW 10th Street: this is an authentic city of books.
E perdersi al suo interno non è soltanto un modo di dire, nonostante la segnaletica apposita che vi condurrà per i vari reparti. Troverete ben quattro piani, più di un milione di titoli e quasi 200 persone che lavorano al suo interno. E' talmente grande da occupare un intero isolato. Il catalogo è sempre aggiornatissimo, ma è la formula che ha permesso alla Powell's City of Books di attrarre oltre 10.000 visitatori al giorno.
Getting lost inside the Powell's city of books is not just a figure of speech, despite the signage that will lead you to the various departments. You will find four floors, more than one million titles and nearly 200 people working in it. An entire block is occupied by the Powell's City of Books. The catalog is always up to date, but it is the formula that has allowed Powell's City of Books to attract over 10,000 visitors a day.

Each week, the company purchases 35,000 used books: a low-cost copy will be placed next to new books. Although most of the "Portlandians" work in technology, culture has always played a predominant role in the community. Drinking coffee in one of the city's many "cafes" and reading a good book can be considered as a local's typical afternoon.
I due quartieri più vibranti sono Pearl District e Nob Hill. La zona industriale del Pearl District è una delle aree più moderni di Portland. Antichi magazzini e fabbriche oggi ospitano boutique, negozi di designer e bistrò. In Pearl Distric è forte il contrasto tra passato e presente: il passato delle piattaforme di carico e le strade lastricate ed il presente delle aziende del nuovo millennio. No, qui non vi annoierete perchè nessun altro quartiere degli Stati Uniti possiede una così alta densità di caffetterie .Eppure il passato di Pearl District e tuttaltro che felice: fino ad una ventina di anni fa era, infatti, il "triangolo industriale", oggi la "gentrification" l'ha reso il quartiere più cool della città. E poi c'è Nob Hill (NW 21st e NW 23rd), con le sue case vittoriane e tanti locali alla moda. Un quartiere trendy ma allo stesso tempo sofisticato. I locali lo chiamano anche Northwest o "Trendy-first e Trendy-third". E' molto simile all'originale Nob Hill, quello di San Francisco, con le strade strette e splendide case vittoriane del 1900, alcune delle quali trasformate in boutique d'arte o negozi di abbigliamento.
The two most vibrant neighborhoods are Pearl District and Nob Hill. The industrial zone of Pearl District is one of the most modern areas in Portland. Old warehouses and factories today host boutiques, designer shops and bistro. In Pearl Distric you'll notice a strong contrast between past and present made by of loading docks and paved roads and the present made by the newest companies and brands. No, you'll never be bored, no other neighborhood in the United States has such this high density of cafes. Nob Hill is a sophisticated, yet trendy, neighborhood surrounding the very popular NW 21st and Northwest 23rd Streets. Locally, the area is also often called Northwest or "Trendy-first and Trendy-third". Similar to its sister neighborhood, the original Nob Hill in San Francisco, the narrow streets are lined with turn-of-the-century Victorian houses, some of which have been turned into artsy shops, trendy clothing boutiques and locally-owned book stores. Sprinkled in are a few of the more popular national chain stores.

Do not forget about food trucks. Portland, along with some particular areas in Canada is the world's capital of food trucks which offer food from around the world. Se viaggiate con i più piccoli non perdetevi l'Oaks Amusement Park, situato ad est del Willamette fiume, appena sotto Ross Island. Un parco divertimenti adatto a tutta la famiglia che comprende anche la bellissima pista di pattinaggio. Noi invece siamo a caccia del famoso "taste of Portland" una sosta andrebbe fatta ad una delle famosissime microbrewery, dette anche Brewvana. Due delle più importanti sono la crystal Ballroom (1332 W Burnside St, in centro) situata nel pearl district e la Cascade Barrel House (939 SE Belmont S). Noi tuttavia vogliamo combinare all'ottima birra anche dell'ottimo cibo e scegliamo allora la Rogue Distillery and Public House (1339 NW Flanders St.). Birre artigianali di grande qualità (con possibilità del solito taste di 4 birre) e cibo squisito. Tra le prime tre cene della spedizione c'è certamente quella di Portland...If you are traveling with children, do not miss the Oaks Amusement Park, located east of the Willamette River, just below Ross Island. That's an amusement park suitable for the whole family including the beautiful ice-skating rink. We are, however, hunting for the famous "taste of Portland", and we shouldn't miss one of the famous microbrewery, also known as Brewvana. Two of the most important "brewvana" are the Crystal Ballroom (1332 W Burnside St, in the center) located in the pearl district and the Cascade Barrel House (939 SE Belmont S). We still want to combine the excellent beer with excellent food and then we prefer to go to the Rogue Distillery and Public House (1339 NW Flanders St.). Great quality craft beers (you can taste 4 beers) and delicious food. One of the first three best dinners of the "on the road" is definitely the one we had in Portland...
