Reaching Pensacola and therefore Florida, coming from Mobile, can be a simple, boring but also a fast drive along the Interstate 10. But if you are looking for adventures, give up the idea of following it and, after leaving the Mobile Bay (where you can admire the USS Alabama), reroute along the "181" in the town of Malbis. The route stretches, but you will have the chance to discover the east coast of Alabama up to the border with Florida. Driving along the coast has still that charm that the four-lane highway will never offer.

L'unica attrazione degna di nota la troverete sostanzialmente subito, nella cittadina di Malbis, la Malbis Memorial Church, una delle sei chiese greco-ortodosse nello stato dell'Alabama. È nota per i suoi intricati e vasti mosaici e dipinti. Non ha mai avuto una congregazione attiva, ma si svolgono osservanze religiose, servizi speciali ed eventi, come i matrimoni. È stata inserita nel Registro dei punti di riferimento e del patrimonio dell'Alabama il 30 novembre 1977.
MALBIS, LOXLEY, FOLEY AND GULF SHORES. FARMERS MARKET AND CHEESECAKE!
The only attraction noteworthy is the Malbis Memorial Church, one of the six Greek Orthodox churches in the state of Alabama. It is known for its intricate and vast mosaics and paintings. It has never had an active congregation, but there are religious observances, special services and events, such as marriages. It was included in the Register of Alabama landmarks and heritage on November 30, 1977.
Proseguendo verso sud sempre lungo la "180" attraverserete prima Loxley e poi Foley, dove potrete effettuare un paio di soste nei golosissimi farmers market cittadini: il Burris Farm Market (3100 S Hickory St, Loxley) è "famoso" soprattutto per le pesche, il Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermans Market è invece semplicemente il più grande mercato agricolo e di pesce della contea. Gli amanti dello shopping potranno fare spese al Tanger Outlet di Foley (2601 S McKenzie St), noi invece abbiamo preferito fare una sosta a Gulf Shores nel piccolo Hope’s cheesecake (210 E 20th Ave), richiamati dal fatto che qui si servano "le migliori cheesecake dello stato". Non sappiamo se sono le migliori, ma sicuramente sono buonissime. Lo spuntino ideale prima di un brevissimo trail lungo il Shelby Lake (nulla di imperdibile) e del cambio di stato: si entra in Florida.
Shoppers will be able to shop at Foley's Tanger Outlet (2601 S McKenzie St), we preferred to stop at Hope's cheesecake (210 E 20th Ave) in Gulf Shores, triggered by the fact that they sell "the best cheesecake of the state ". GUIDA ALLA VISITA DEL NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NAVAL AVIATION
Non tutti forse avranno sentito nominare il National Museum of Naval Aviation a Pensacola, Florida, ma tutti o quasi hanno visto il celebre film Top Gun. E' proprio qui, infatti che si allenano e si esibiscono (in inverno e primavera, ore 11.30) i Blue Angels, i membri della U.S. Navy Flight. Se avete visto almeno una volta nella vostra vita il film (o anche se non lo avete fatto), il National Museum Of Naval Aviation è un must e raccoglie il meglio del meglio dell'aviazione militare americana. Come spesso succede, dovrete prima fermarvi ad una postazione di blocco e mostrare i vostri documenti prima di entrare nell'area militare e visitare il museo (gratuito).
GUIDE TO THE VISIT OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NAVAL AVIATION
Not everyone may have heard about the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida, but all or most have watched the famous movie Top Gun. It is precisely here, in fact, that the Blue Angels, the members of the U.S Navy Flight, train and perform (in winter and spring, at 11.30 am). Even if you've never seen the movie, the National Museum of Naval Aviation is a must and collects the best of American military aviation. As often happens, you will first have to stop at a military checkpoint and show your i.d. before entering the military area and visit the museum. Which is free.
Il museo si estende oggi su uno spazio espositivo di 28000 mq ed ospita 130 aereoplani, cui si aggiungono 40 ulteriori veivoli parcheggiati all'esterno di fronte agli hangar. All'ingresso del museo troverete la scultura "Lo Spirito dell'Aviazione Navale", che rappresenta i piloti della Marina nei cinque conflitti più significativi per la storia americana (prima e seconda guerra mondiale, guerra di Corea, guerra del Vietnam e guerra del Golfo), per poi approdare in quello che è il vero e proprio museo. Ad attendervi la replica del celebre Curtiss A-1 Triad, il primo aereo della marina statunitense, ed anche un immenso idrovolante, il Nc-4, il primo aereo ad aver transvolato l'oceano atlantico nel 1919. Dal punto di vista puramente storico si tratta del pezzo più importante dell'intero museo. Dietro ai jet è presente una ricostruzione di Hanoi Hilton, un campo di prigionia vietnamita, mentre nello splendido Blue Angel Atrium troverete di tutto e di più sulla famosa pattuglia acrobatica della marina americana, i Blue Angels.
The museum nowadays extends over an exhibition area of 28,000 square meters and houses 130 airplanes, plus 40 additional vehicles parked outside, facing the hangars. At the entrance of the museum you will find the sculpture "The Spirit of Naval Aviation", which represents the Navy pilots in the five most significant conflicts in American history (first and second world war, Korean War, Vietnam War and Gulf War ), then you'll move forward to the real museum. You'll see the replica of the famous Curtiss A-1 Triad, the first aircraft of the US Navy, and also an immense seaplane, the Nc-4, the first plane which transvolted the Atlantic Ocean in 1919. From a purely historical point of view, this is the most important piece of the entire museum. Behind the jets there is a reconstruction of Hanoi Hilton, a Vietnamese prison camp, while in the beautiful Blue Angel Atrium you will find everything and more about the famous acrobatic team of the American Navy, the Blue Angels.
Nell'area dedicata alle portaerei non potrete non notare la replica del ponte di volo di una portaerei leggera, la Uss Cabot (la scala è reale, eccetto che per la lunghezza), un bombardiere Douglas Sbd ed un caccia Grumman F4F6.
In the area dedicated to the aircraft carriers you can not miss the replica of the flight deck of a light aircraft carrier, the Uss Cabot (the scale is real, except for the length), a Douglas Sbd bomber and a Grumman F4F6 fighter.
L'ultima parte della visita è dedicata alla galleria, dove troverete un modello in scala della portaerei Uss Enterprise, una riproduzione dell'hangar di una portaerei, un'altra di un avamposto del pacifico durante la seconda guerra mondiale ed una ricostruzione ambientale della vitta cittadina in Usa nel 1943. E' possibile nel Flight Adventure Deck sperimentare le sensazioni di un volo attraverso i simulatori ma, come spesso succede in America, a prezzi non proprio popolari.
The last part of the visit is dedicated to the gallery, where you will find a scale model of the aircraft carrier Uss Enterprise, a replica of an aircraft carrier's hangar, another replica of an outpost of the Pacific during the Second World War and an environmental reconstruction of a city town in the USA in 1943. It is possible to experience the sensations of a flight through the simulators at the Flight Adventure Deck but, as often happens in America, at quite high prices.
Prima di lasciare l'area militare tornare sui vostri passi (noi siamo entrati da S. Blue Angel Parkway e da lì siamo dovuti uscire anche le nostre intenzioni erano di procedere verso est) e fermatevi ad ammirare il Pensacola Light (2081 Radford Blvd). Salite i 177 gradini dello storico faro per uno dei panorami più belli della costa del Golfo (7 dollari).

A CACCIA DI... UFO A PENSACOLA BEACH
D'accordo stiamo scherzando, ma il premio di edificio più strano fotografato lungo i quasi 8.000 km di on the road va sicuramente alla Futuro UFO Spaceship House (1304 Panferio Dr) scovato a Pensacola Beach. L'uragano Ivan, l'uragano Dennis, un tornado... l'UFO House ha resistito a tutti questi tremendi eventi naturali. Una sorta di astronave capace di resistere a qualsiasi intemperia, voluta e creata nel 1968 dall'architetto finlandese Matti Suuronen.
HUNTING ... UFO IN PENSACOLA BEACH
Okay, we're joking, but the award for strangest building photographed along the almost 5.500 miles of the 2018 on the road definitely goes to the Future UFO Spaceship House (1304 Panferio Dr) found in Pensacola Beach. Hurricane Ivan, Hurricane Dennis, a tornado ... UFO House has resisted all these terrible natural events. A sort of spaceship capable of resisting any weather, desired and created in 1968 by the Finnish architect Matti Suuronen.
DESTIN, TRA MARE E RELAX
Splendide spiagge bianche, campi da golf impegnativi e la pesca di fama mondiale definiscono la “Emerald Coast City of Destin”. Rannicchiata nel Golfo del Messico nel nord-ovest della Florida, Destin è giustamente famosa per le sue sabbie color zucchero candido e le sue acque color smeraldo. E’ stata inserita nei primi dieci posti del "Best in the US" per il 2017 da Lonely Planet; qui, chiaramente ci si passa se si è in cerca di mare e relax, soprattutto dopo tanti giorni di on the road. Tra le "cose da vedere a Destin" segnaliamo in primis il Destin Commons (4100 Legendary rd), un outlet all'aperto e poi l'Harborwalk village (10 harbor blvd), ricco di ristoranti e attività (sportive e non). Qui puoi trovare negozi sul lungomare, paddle board e kayak, jet ski, barche con fondo di vetro, crociere con delfini, concerti e musica dal vivo, fuochi d'artificio settimanali e una serie di ristoranti, soprattutto di pesce. Ma la chicca della città è sicuramente l'Henderson Beach State Park (17000 Emerald Coast Pkwy). L'ingresso nella riserva statale costa 6 dollari, ma vi troverete di fronte la spiaggia più bella di Destin.
DESTIN, BETWEEN SEA AND RELAXATION
Beautiful white beaches, challenging golf courses and world-class fishing define the "Emerald Coast City of Destin". Curled up in the Gulf of Mexico in northwest Florida, Destin is rightly famous for its sugar-white sands and emerald waters. It has been included in the first ten places of the "Best in the US" for 2017 by Lonely Planet. Well, you must visit Destin if looking for beaches and relaxation, especially after so many days spent on the road. Among the "things to see and do in Destin" we mention primarily the Destin Commons (4100 Legendary rd), an outdoor outlet shopping and then the Harborwalk village (10 harbor blvd), full of restaurants and activities.. Here you can find waterfront shops, paddle boards and kayaks, jet skis, glass bottom boats, dolphin cruises, concerts and live music, weekly fireworks and a range of restaurants, especially seafood restaurants. Raramente ci capita di parlare di un hotel, tantomeno di un resort. I nostri viaggi "on the road" lasciano pochissimo spazio al lusso, quasi inesistente, ma questa volta un'eccezione vogliamo farla. Non perchè ci siamo dedicati al lusso, ma perchè studiando con la consueta caparbia, ci siamo imbattuti in un resort davvero magico ad un prezzo accessibilissimo (periodo: agosto, 130 euro a notte): l'Embarc Sandestin nella cittadina di Miramar Beach, confinante con Destin.
WHERE TO STAY IN DESTIN: EMBARC SANDESTIN, A RESORT IN THE PARADISE
We rarely talk about a hotel, least of all about a resort. Our "on the road" travels leave very little room for luxury, almost non-existent, but this time we want to make an exception. No, we haven't devoted ourselves to the luxury. What happened was we came across a truly magical resort at an affordable price (period: August, 130 euros per night) while planning the summer 2018 trip: the Embarc Sandestin in the town of Miramar Beach, bordering with Destin.

Il resort di per sé si potrebbe catalogare di fascia medio-alta, ma è con gli extra che diventa un... paradiso. Almeno per noi. Con il soggiorno, avrete diritto, infatti, ad un'ora di tennis (noleggio di racchette e palline gratuito) al giorno sui campi in terra verde del circolo Sandestin Tennis Club, un'ora di kayak ed quattro di noleggio della bicicletta.
The resort, per se, can easily be classified as medium-high range, but with the extras it definitely becomes a ... paradise. At least for us. During the time here, you will be entitled, in fact, to play tennis one hour every day (rackets and balls rentals are free of charge) on the green clay courts of the Sandestin Tennis Club, kayaking one hour per day and ride a bike for four hours per day. In the most scenic bit.
