L'ultima giornata a Reykjavik è destinata a tutto quello che non siamo ancora riusciti a visitare, una sorta di giorno jolly nel quale inserire tutte quelle cose, pur interessanti, che non avevano trovato spazio nei giorni precedenti. E, col senno di poi, questa scelta si è rivelata davvero vincente, non tanto per il Thingvellir National Park, che tra tutti i bellissimi luoghi islandesi si è rivelato esser tra i meno interessanti in assoluto, e neppure se vogliamo per Reykjavik, la capitale. molto carina ma meritevole di non più di un paio d'ore, bensì per quella gemma assoluta della Sky Lagoon, senza ombra di dubbio il centro termale più bello d'Islanda...
The last day in Reykjavik was destined to all the things we hadn't visited yet, a sort of "wild card day" where we could add all those things that we've missed during the previous days. And, in hindsight, this choice turned out to be a really good one, not so much for the Thingvellir National Park, which of all the beautiful Icelandic places turned out to be one of the least interesting, and not even for Reykjavik, the capital. It's very nice but you can just spend a couple of hours visiting the downtown... This choice ended up to be so good because of that absolute gem called the Sky Lagoon, without a doubt the most beautiful spa in Iceland ...
Thingvellir, che significa pianure dell’assemblea, è il sito storico più significativo per tutta la cultura islandese, perchè qui nel 930 i vichinghi vi fondarono l’Alþingi, il più antico parlamento del mondo, che ha continuato a svolgere il suo ruolo fino al 1798. Ogni importante decisione veniva discussa qui, si approvavano nuove leggi ed è questo il luogo in cui si decise di adottare il cristianesimo come religione nazionale. Sempre all’interno del parco venne proclamata l’indipendenza dell’Islanda il 17 giugno 1944. Thingvellir è speciale però anche dal punto di vista geologico, perchè qui è presente la faglia Sifra.
Come visitare Thingvellir National Park? Innanzitutto scegliete se lasciare la vostra vettura a sud del parco, al "Thingvellir Parking n.1", dove è presente anche il visitor center (consigliato), oppure un po' più a nord, nel parcheggio 3: da qui, una volta abbracciato il sentiero, potrete andare alla caccia delle bellezze del parco. Se come noi avrete parcheggiato al visitor center, uno stretto corridoio circondato dal canyon sarà il vostro primo stop: è la grande faglia di Almannagjá lunga 5 km, dove i numerosi pannelli esplicativi vi racconteranno ogni singolo dettaglio della placca eurasiatica ed americana. Il secondo stop è Althing, non lontano da Almanagjà, ovvero il luogo in cui venne trasferito il Parlamento islandese, dopo la conversione alla fede cristiana.
How to visit Thingvellir National Park? First of all, visitors have to choose whether to leave the car south of the park, at the "Thingvellir Parking n.1", where there is also the visitor center (option recommended), or a little further north, in parking lot 3: from here, once embraced the trail, you can go hunting for the beauties of the park. If, like us, you have parked at the visitor center, a narrow corridor surrounded by the canyon will be your first stop: it is the great fault of Almannagjá (5 km long), where the many explanatory panels tell about every single detail of the Eurasian and American plates. The second stop is the Althing, not far from Almanagjá, the place where the Icelandic Parliament was transferred after the conversion to Christianity.
Una deviazione sulla sinistra conduce invece alle Oxarafoss, create dal fiume Oxara da cui le cascate prendono il nome. Non lontano non potrete poi non notare Logberg, la roccia della legge, e soprattutto Drekkingarhylur, una piscina naturale nota per la sua storia decisamente triste. Qui, infatti, venivano gettate le donne che si macchiavano di reati come l'aborto e l'adulterio.
A detour on the left leads instead to Oxarafoss, created by the river Oxara from which it takes its name. Not far from the falls, you can not miss Logberg, the law rock, and especially Drekkingarhylur, a natural pool known for its history decidedly sad. Here, in fact, women who were guilty of crimes such as abortion and adultery were thrown into them.
Proseguendo nel loop trail che riporta al visitor center, gli ultimi stop da non mancare saranno Alþingi, l'antico parlamento, la Fessura di Peningagjá (detta anche "money chasm" per l'usanza di gettare al suo interno una monetina ed esprimere un desiderio), Þingvallabær (la fattoria) e la chiesa ed infine il lago Thingvallavatn, il più grande di tutta l'Islanda. E' profondo 100 metri ed è un autentico paradiso per chi ama fare snorkeling grazie alle sue temperature piuttosto miti.
Continuing on the loop trail that leads back to the visitor center, the last stops not to be missed are Alþingi, the ancient parliament, the Peningagjá Slot (also known as "money chasm" because people are used to throw a coin inside and make a wish), Þingvallabær (the farm) and the church and finally the Thingvallavatn lake, the largest in Iceland. It is 100 meters deep and is a real paradise for those who love snorkeling thanks to its mild temperatures.
REYKJAVIK, QUALCHE CHICCA DA NON PERDERE
Reykjavik non è grande, soprattutto se paragonata alle altre capitali europee. Per questo più che visitarla, è doveroso passeggiare tra le sue coloratissime vie del centro, tra gallerie e locali per poi fare una capatina al porto e magari assaggiare un hot dog da Baejarins bestu, che significa “Il migliore della città” e che è celebre per cucinare i migliori panini del paese. Se cercate un parcheggio gratuito, prendete come riferimento l'enorme Hallgrimskirkja church, che con i suoi 74.5 metri di altitudine è la più grande chiesa d'Islanda. Impossibile non notarla. Qui potrete prendere l'ascensore e salire sul campanile di Hallgrimskirkja, sulla collina Skolavorduhaed, da cui godere di una vista panoramica su tutto il centro di Reykjavík.
Se avrete lasciato l'auto nei dintorni della chiesa, avventuratevi per il centro storico, che poi significa anche e soprattutto Laugavegur, la più bella via di Reykjavik. La via è famosa per i suoi locali, per i cafe, per essere per larghi tratti pedonale, ma anche e soprattutto per le opere di urban art che decorano strada ed edifici. Qui, lungo "la via dell'acqua" (tradotto direttamente dall'islandese) troverete davvero di tutto, dai negozi di souvenir agli oggetti d'arte, dai cafè ai locali dove passare la serata.
If you have left the car in the vicinity of the church, you're ready to venture into the old town, which also means Laugavegur, the most beautiful street of Reykjavik. The street is famous for its bars, cafes and also for being pedestrian, but also and especially for the works of urban art that decorate street and buildings. Here, along "the waterway" (translated directly from Icelandic) you will find everything, from souvenir stores to art objects, from cafes to places where you can spend the evening.
Oltre ovviamente a ristoranti e molto altro. E non dimenticatevi dei suoi colori, in particolare il bellissimo arcobaleno di una via che si affaccia su Laugavegur e dalla quale si intravede in lontananza proprio la Hallgrimskirkja church. Da non perdere c'è poi la Domkirkjan cathedral, principale luogo di culto luterano di Reykjavík, sede del Vescovo d'Islanda e chiesa madre della Chiesa d'Islanda. Costeggiando il mare, anche la bellissima Icelandid Opera House e la Hofdi House, quest'ultima un po' lontanuccia dal centro storico. La Hofdi House, costruita nel 1909, è famosa per aver ospitato nel 1986 l'incontro tra l'allora Presidente americano Ronald Reagan e quello dell’Unione Sovietica Mikhail Gorbachev. un passo importante per la fine della Guerra Fredda.

And do not forget its colors, in particular the beautiful rainbow of a street that overlooks Laugavegur and from which you can see the Hallgrimskirkja church in the distance. Visitors shouldn't also miss the Domkirkjan cathedral, the main Lutheran place of worship of Reykjavík, seat of the Bishop of Iceland and mother church of the Church of Iceland. Along the sea, also the beautiful Icelandid Opera House and the Hofdi House, the latter a bit far from the doqntown. The Hofdi House, built in 1909, is famous for having hosted in 1986 the meeting between the American President Ronald Reagan and that of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev. an important step towards the end of the Cold War.
LA SKY LAGOON - RIANIMA I TUOI SENSI AL CONFINE DEL MONDO
No, non fatevi ingannare dalla sua posizione lontana dalle luci di riflettori. E' vero, Reykjavik è distante una decina di km e la zona portuale di Karsnes non è delle migliori, fatta di edilizia suburbana e aree industriali. Come quella che dovrete superare per arrivare alla fine della strada, la Vesturvör, e raggiungere questo autentico e nuovissimo (ha aperto nel 2021) paradiso, la Sky Lagoon. Il suo fiore all'occhiello è sicuramente l'infinity pool di 75 metri che si affaccia direttamente sull'oceano, ma è tutto il contesto a rendere la vostra giornata in questa laguna geotermica davvero speciale. L’esterno di questa laguna ha l’aspetto delle tipiche Torfbæir, le case ricoperte di torba che visiteremo nelle giornate successive, ma al suo interno vanta uno stile moderno di indubbia qualità.
THE SKY LAGOON - REVIVE YOUR SENSES AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD
No, don't be fooled by its location away from the spotlight. It's true, Reykjavik is about ten kilometers away and the port area of Karsnes is not one of the best areas, made up of suburban construction and industrial zones. Like the one you'll have to pass to get to the end of the road, the Vesturvör, and reach this authentic and brand new (it opened in 2021) paradise, the Sky Lagoon. Its crowning glory is definitely the 75-meter infinity pool that directly overlooks the ocean, but it's the whole setting that makes your day at this geothermal lagoon truly special. The exterior of this lagoon has the look of the typical Torfbæir, the peat-covered houses that we will visit in the following days, but inside it boasts a modern style of undoubted quality.

La grande novità che presenta la Sky Lagoon è un percorso in sette fasi, "seven-step Sky Ritual" che "rianimano i tuoi sensi". Ad ognuno corrisponde un proprio spazio, partendo proprio dalla laguna, calda ed enorme, che si affaccia sull'oceano, che sarà anche il settimo ed ultimo step del percorso. Qui si rallenta e si ammira il panorama, ci si rilassa insomma. Il secondo passaggio è un tuffo nell'acqua gelata, che stimolerà il sistema immunitario, diminuirà il flusso sanguigno nel corpo e stringerà la pelle, mentre il terzo è quello di avventurarsi nella "tufa", le tipiche case islandesi, dentro le quali sono stati creati nell'ordine una sauna panoramica con una doccia sensoriale fredda, uno scrub termale e un bagno turco.

Il pacchetto che comprende anche i "seven steps" è il Pure Pass che, oltre ad offrire l'ingresso alla laguna (come nel Pure Lite Pass), consente l'accesso all'area della sauna, del bagno turco, degli scrub e della doccia sensoriale dove completare il percorso dei sette steps. Il costo del Pure Pass è di 9.990 corone islandesi (circa 65 euro).
The package that also includes the "seven steps experience" is called Pure Pass which offers entrance to the lagoon (like the Pure Lite Pass) but also allows visitors to enter the sauna, the Turkish bath, the scrubs and sensory shower area where you can complete the seven steps ritual. The cost of the Pure Pass is 9,990 Kr (about 65 euros).
Per la cena siamo tornati nel cuore di Reykjavik, al Brewdog, situato in una delle vie parallele alla Laugavegur. Qui è possibile bere birra di ottima qualità (e fare anche tasting di 4 birre) e cenare in stile americano, con hamburger, alette di pollo (tutto davvero buono), ma anche con qualche piatto più ricercato. La nota dolente se vogliamo è il prezzo, un po' più alto dei già alti standard islandesi.
We went back to the heart of Reykjavik for dinner. We opted for the Brewdog, located in one of the parallel street to Laugavegur. Here you can drink good quality beer (and also go for a tasting of 4 beers) and dine in American style, with burgers, chicken wings (everything was really good), but also with some more sophisticated dishes. The sore point is the price, a bit higher than the already high Icelandic standards.
