La scelta, se vogliamo controcorrente, di far diventare Reykjavik la nostra base per 4 notti, ci ha permesso di esplorare a fondo i suoi dintorni. Solitamente, chi intraprendere un viaggio lungo la Route 1, spende nella capitale non più di mezza giornata e già dopo aver esplorato il "circolo d'oro", la principale attrazione dei dintorni di Reykjavik, si allontana lungo la costa alla ricerca delle altre bellezze islandesi. Noi abbiamo invece scelto di esplorare con calma quest'area e di ritornare ogni sera nella capitale, una decisione che se da una parte ci ha obbligato a fare qualche km in più, dall'altra ci ha permesso di non cambiare hotel ogni sera e, di poter visitare il maggior numero di luoghi possibili senza dover sempre rincorrere il tempo. E, motivo più importante, abbiamo scelto in base al meteo della giornata dove dirigerci. Durante la prima giornata abbiamo completato parte del circolo d'oro (rinunciando solo al Thingvellir National Park), nella seconda ci siamo dedicati all'entroterra, il Landmannalaugar, mentre nella terza ed ultima abbiamo visitato il Thingvellir, la città di Reykjavik e chiuso con quelle che fino ad ora ci sentiamo di considerare il centro termale più bello in cui siamo stati, la Sky Lagoon...
The choice, which is against the current, of making Reykjavik our base for 4 nights, allowed us to explore its surroundings in depth. Usually, those who embark on a journey along "Route 1", just spend no more than half a day in the capital, and after having explored the "golden circle" (the main attraction of the surroundings of Reykjavik) head off along the coast looking for of other Icelandic beauties. On the other hand, we chose to explore this area calmly and to return to the the icelandic capital every evening: this is a decision which, on the one hand, forced us to travel a few more kilometers every day, but on the other, we didn't have to change the hotel every evening and we've also been able to visit as many places as possible without any rush. But above all, we had the chance to choose what to do according to the weather conditions of that day. During the first day we completed part of the Golden Circle (we only skipped the Thingvellir National Park), during the second day we went to Landmannalaugar, while during the third and last day we visited Thingvellir, the city of Reykjavik and what we consider the most beautiful spa we have ever been to, the Sky Lagoon...
IL CIRCOLO D'ORO - UN'INCREDIBILE SEQUENZA DI BELLEZZE...
Possiamo dire tutto quello che vogliamo sul Circolo d'Oro, che è troppo turistico, troppo affollato, lontano dalla visione che abbiamo dell'Islanda, ma raramente ci è capitato (comprendendo anche i viaggi negli Stati Uniti) di trovare così tante bellezze una in fila all'altra. Ed onestamente anche una più bella dell'altra. Il circolo d'oro è il fiore all'occhiello dall'Islanda, un percorso ad anello di 250 km (con partenza e rientro da Reykjavik) che racchiude il meglio di questo splendido paese. Percorsi da trekking fantastici, geyser, pozze di acqua bollente, cascate, crateri e canyon: un luogo dove natura e storia si fondono regalando al visitatore un'impatto davvero splendido con la realtà islandese. Come vi abbiamo anticipato, per visitare al meglio il Circolo d'Oro occorrono due giornate e non una come invece si tende a pensare ascoltando anche i pareri che si trovano su guide turistiche ed internet. Per questo noi abbiamo momentaneamente lasciato da parte il Thingvellir National Park (50 km a nord est di Reykjavik) ed abbiamo proseguito per altri 50 km sino a raggiungere il parcheggio del primo grande appuntamento di giornata, le Brúarfoss falls.
THE GOLDEN CIRCLE - AN INCREDIBLE SEQUENCE OF BEAUTIES...
We can say whatever we want about the Golden Circle, we can say that it is too touristy, too crowded, far from the vision we have of Iceland, but we've never encountered (including all the trips to the United States) so many beauties one in a row. And honestly, one prettier than the other. The Golden Circle is Iceland's highlight, a 250 km loop road (starting and returning from Reykjavik) that encompasses the best of this beautiful country. Amazing trekking trail, geysers, boiling water pools, waterfalls, craters and canyons: a place where nature and history come together to give the visitor a truly wonderful impact with the Icelandic reality. As we have anticipated, if you want to visit the Golden Circle as its best you need two days and not just one as we tend to think listening to the opinions that are found on tourist guides and on the internet. For this reason, we temporarily skip Thingvellir National Park (50 km northeast of Reykjavik) and continue toward east for another 50 km until we get to the parking lot of the first big appointment of the day, the Brúarfoss Falls.
BRUARFOSS, SE QUESTO E' L'INIZIO...
In molti di voi non l'avranno neppure sentita nominare, eppure queste splendide cascate fanno parte del Circolo D'Oro. Come mai sono così sconosciute? Semplice, il Circolo D'Oro è perfetto per il visitatore che "non vuol far fatica", perchè il suo grande vantaggio è che le bellezze naturali sono tutte lì, davvero a portata di mano (e di fatica...). Non le Bruarfoss non sono "comode", c'è da camminare... e c'è anche da faticare per trovare parcheggio perchè non sono segnalate. Già, perchè da qualche tempo il proprietario del terreno su cui sorgono queste fantastiche cascate, ha chiuso la semplice via d'accesso al view point per colpa di diversi irrispettosi turisti ed ora occorre percorrere un sentiero di 7 km tra andata e ritorno per ammirarle. Il parcheggio non è segnalato, dovrete lasciare la vostra auto (sulla sinistra se provenite da Reykjavik) in un piccolo spiazzo subito dopo un ponte, 13 km ad est della piccola cittadina di Laugarvatn.
BRUARFOSS, IF THIS IS THE BEGINNING...
Many of you may not have even heard of it, yet these beautiful waterfalls are part of the Golden Circle. Why are they so unknown? The answer is simple, the Golden Circle is perfect for the visitor who "doesn't want to struggle": its great advantage is that the natural beauties are all right there, within a very short walk. The Bruarfoss are not "comfortable", you'll have to walk in a muddy terrain... and it's also not very easy to find the parking lot. Yes, because the owner of the land on which those fantastic waterfalls are located, for some time has closed the easy access road to the view point due to several disrespectful tourists and now you'llhave to walk a 7 km round trip trail if you want to admire them. The parking lot is not marked, you just have to leave your car (on the left if you are coming from Reykjavik) in a small lot just after a bridge, 13 km east of the small town of Laugarvatn.

BRUARFOSS TRAIL - TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE
Il percorso, come sempre in Islanda sempre ben segnalato, si sviluppa per circa due km accanto fiume Brúará, lungo una stradina sterrata ma semplice: l'unica decisione che dovrete prendere, nella fase iniziale del percorso, è se seguire il percorso che si snoda verso destra oppure verso sinistra. Mantenete la destra se volete accorciarlo di qualche centinaia di metri. La seconda parte si sviluppa invece nel bosco: qui, anche d'estate, troverete un terreno piuttosto fangoso ma non impegnativo, che vi condurrà alla prima cascata, la Midfoss Waterfall.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BRUARFOSS TRAIL
The trail, as always in Iceland well signposted, runs for about two kilometers close to the Brúará river, along a dirt but easy road: at the very beginning of the trail there's a fork, we suggest to follow the path on the right just because is shorter... The second part of the trail is in the woods: here, even in summer, you'll find a rather muddy but not difficult terrain, which leads you to the first waterfall, the Midfoss Waterfall.
L'ultimo tratto di sentiero tornerà a seguire il corso dell'azzurrissimo fiume Brúará (in leggera salita) sino a raggiungere il grande obiettivo dell'escursione, le Bruarfoss. Le potrete ammirare da più angolazioni, ma la vista migliore l'avrete sicuramente dal ponte di legno che le sovrasta. Nelle due ore trascorse in questa bellissima e remota zona del Circolo D'Oro, abbiamo incontrato solo cinque persone: nella parte restante della giornata saranno state almeno mille...
The last part of the path follows the course of the blue Brúará river (slightly uphill) until you reach the great goal of the excursion, the Bruarfoss falls. You can admire them from many angles, but the best view is surely from the wooden bridge above them. During the two hours we spent in this beautiful and remote area of the Golden Circle, we met only five people: the other thousand people we met that day were all at the geyser and at the Gullfoss...
STROKKUR, IL GEYSER PIU' PRECISO AL MONDO
15 km ad est del parcheggio di Bruarfoss, avrete davvero il sentore di essere entrati nel Circolo d'Oro. Dal nulla compare un enorme parcheggio pieno di vetture e di bus, un ristorante, un gigantesco negozio di souvenir ed un hotel. Sono tutti qui per ammirare il geyser più preciso al mondo, Strokkur, che erutta ogni cinque-otto minuti e raggiunge anche i 35 metri di altitudine nonostante la sua media sia di 15-20 metri. Uno spettacolo incredibile, molto simile a quello ammirato all'Old Faithful geyser nel Parco Nazionale di Yellowstone. Fino a qualche tempo fa i geyser erano due, ma Geysir è ora inattivo per colpa dei visitatori che vi lanciavano pietre.
STROKKUR, THE MOST PRECISE GEYSER IN THE WORLD
15 km east of the Bruarfoss parking lot, you just feel like you have really entered the Golden Circle. A huge parking lot full of cars and buses, a restaurant, a giant souvenir store and a hotel appear Out of nowhere. All those people are just there to admire the most precise geyser in the world, Strokkur, which erupts every five to eight minutes and its usual height is 15–20 metres (49–66 ft), although it can sometimes erupt up to 40 metres (130 ft) high. An incredible show, very similar to the one admired at the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park. Until some time ago there were two geysers, but Geysir is now inactive due to visitors throwing stones at it.
Strokkur ha cominciato la sua attività nel lontano 1789 e, dopo circa 70 anni di pausa (tra il 1896 ed il 1963) ha ripreso la sua attività, che ora può essere ammirata da più angolazioni. In molti, infatti, scelgono di salire su una collina posizionata dietro il geyser per ammirarlo, dopo una camminata in salita di una ventina di minuti, da posizione davvero privilegiata.
Strokkur began its activity in the far 1789 and, after about 70 years of pause (between 1896 and 1963) it has resumed its activity, that now can be admired from more angles. Many visitors, in fact, choose to climb a hill located behind the geyser to admire it, after a 20 minutes uphill walk from a truly privileged position.
GULLFOSS, ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA "REGINA DELLE CASCATE"
Neppure il tempo di salutare l'area geotermale di Strokkur-Geysir, che è già tempo di scendere dalla propria vettura. E qui lo spettacolo è davvero imponente, grazie alle Gullfoss, una delle più scenografiche cascate d'Islanda, tanto da aver acquistato nel corso degli anni la nomea di "regina delle cascate islandesi". E tutto sommato, come dargli torto. Se oggi migliaia e migliaia di visitatori possono ancora ammirarla in tutto il suo splendore è grazie ad una signora del posto, che all'inizio del XX secolo si batté contro una società inglese intenzionata ad acquistare la cascata per costruirvi una diga. La signora, infatti, minacciò di buttarsi nella cascata nel caso il governo islandese avesse approvato il progetto della diga.
GULLFOSS, DISCOVERING THE "QUEEN OF THE WATERFALLS"
We don't even the time to say goodbye to the geothermal area of Strokkur-Geysir that is already time to get off our car. Here the spectacle is really impressive, thanks to Gullfoss, one of the most incredible waterfalls in Iceland, enough to be called the "Queen of Icelandic waterfalls. And all in all, can you blame it?. If today thousands and thousands of visitors can still admire this beautiful waterfall, it is just thanks to a local lady, who at the beginning of the twentieth century fought against an English company which wanted to purchase the waterfall and build a dam right there. The lady, in fact, would have jumped into the waterfall if the Icelandic government had approved the dam project.
Il risultato di cui godiamo ora è la possibilità di ammirarla da lontano, da vicinissimo grazie un breve sentiero che conduce il visitatore proprio a ridosso della cascata, ma anche da sopra, grazie ad un'altra semplice passeggiata. La portata media delle Gullfoss è di circa 140 m³/s in estate e 80 m³/s in inverno. Le acque tumultuose del fiume Hvítá, invece, compiono due salti di 11m e 21m di altezza che grazie ai sentieri costruiti in massima sicurezza, possono essere ammirati anche da distanza davvero ravvicinata.
The result we enjoy today is the possibility to admire it from afar, from very close thanks to a short path that leads the visitor right next to the waterfall, but also from above, thanks to another simple walk. The average flow of the Gullfoss is about 140 m³/s in summer and 80 m³/s in winter. The tumultuous waters of the Hvítá river, however, create two jumps (11m and 21m high) that thanks to the paths built in maximum security, can be admired even from a very close range.
PILLOLE DAL CIRCOLO D'ORO - IL CANYON DI BRUHARLOD ED IL CRATERE KERID
Le cascate Gullfoss sono il punto più ad est del Circolo D'Oro. Da qui sarà una lento rientrare verso Reykjavik (nel nostro caso) o verso Sellfoss, dove solitamente il visitatore decide si spendere la notte prima di avventurarsi lungo la "route 1". Un piccolo tratto di sterrata (necessario se si vuole completare il loop del Circolo D'Oro senza allungare notevolmente la strada) vi conduce dopo 12 km ad un piccolo ma suggestivo canyon, situato sulla destra appena dopo aver superato uno dei tanti ponti a singola carreggiata che si trovano in Islanda. Il canyon di Brúarhlöð, che troverete appena dopo l'area pic nic, è stato modellato nel corso degli anni dal fiume Hvità, un altro luogo decisamente poco frequentato (eravamo in quattro...) ma capace di regalarvi splendidi scatti fotografici.
TIPS FROM THE GOLDEN CIRCLE - BRUHARLOD CANYON AND KERID CRATER
Gullfoss waterfalls are the easternmost point of the Golden Circle. From there, it will be a slow return to Reykjavik (this is our case) or to Sellfoss, where visitors usually decide to spend the night before venturing along "route 1". A small stretch of dirt road (it's necessary if you want to complete the Golden Circle loop without going out of your way) leads you after 12 km to a small but impressive canyon, located on the right just after passing one of the many single carriageway bridges that are found in Iceland. The canyon of Brúarhlöð, which is just after the picnic area, has been shaped over the years by the Hvità river and is definitely another place little frequented (there were just four of us...) but able to give you beautiful shots.
Proseguendo invece più spediti verso la civiltà, che sia quella di Reykjavik o di Sellfoss, non si può non mancare di visitare, lungo la "35", Kerid, un cratere formatosi circa 6500 anni fa la cui caldera è profonda 55 metri. Geologicamente parlando, Kerid è una delle caldere vulcaniche più giovani che si trovano in Islanda ed ha una profondità massima che varia tra i 7 e i 14 metri, a seconda delle piogge e di altri fattori. I minerali nel suolo gli conferiscono una colorazione acquamarina decisamente fotogenica. Dopo aver acquistato il ticket per la visita (400 isk, circa 2.50 euro) un percorso ad anello conduce sia alla sommità del cratere, sia al suo interno.
Continuing instead towards civilization, whether that of Reykjavik or Sellfoss, you can not miss along the "35" the Kerid crater, that was formed about 6500 years ago and whose caldera is 55 meters deep. Geologically speaking, Kerid is one of the youngest volcanic calderas found in Iceland and has a maximum depth that varies between 7 and 14 meters, depending on rainfall and other factors. Minerals in the soil give it a decidedly photogenic aquamarine coloration. After purchasing the ticket for the visit (400 isk, about 2.50 euros) a loop trail leads both to the top of the crater and to its interior.
E PER CENA? THE STEAK HOUSE PROMOSSA A PIENI VOTI
Dopo la parziale delusione del fish and chips del giorno precedente, il riscatto è arrivato con The Steak House (Tryggvagata 4-6, 101 Reykjavík), promossa a pieni voti sia per la qualità che per il prezzo, decisamente nella media (soprattutto per gli standard islandesi...). Una ribeye (250 gr), un filetto (200 gr), due contorni, una salsa chimichurri e due birre Einstock (più pane e burro compresi nel prezzo) sono costati 95 euro.
WHAT ABOUT DINNER? THE STEAK HOUSE PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS
After the partial disappointment experiecend the day before with the fish and chips, the ransom has come at The Steak House (Tryggvagata 4-6, 101 Reykjavík), promoted with full marks for both quality and the average price (especially if you consider the Icelandic standards ...). We got a ribeye (250 gr), a beef tenderloin (200 gr), two side dishes, a chimichurri sauce and two Einstock beers (plus bread and butter which were included) the bill was 95 euros.
