4 days in New York City - the best itinerary and tips (day 2)

Se la prima delle quattro giornate alla scoperta di New York City è stata decisamente intensa e ricca di luoghi iconici della Grande Mela, la seconda giornata tutta newyorchese è se vogliamo addirittura più piena e, forse ancor più del giorno precedente, potreste trovarvi a compiere delle scelte a volte anche dolorose. Con ancora negli occhi la splendida vista di Manhattan dal Brooklyn Bridge Park, è già tempo di "day 2", che nel mio itinerario cade di domenica e non a caso. E' la giornata, infatti, della messa ghospel, ormai diventata un appuntamento imperdibile per ogni turista che passi dalle parti di Harlem. Ghospel ma non solo, perchè nel primo pomeriggio ci attendono due luoghi iconici, uno decisamente storico come il Metropolitan Museum of Art, uno dei musei più apprezzati al mondo e, a seguire, l'ultimo arrivato (almeno nel momento in cui scrivo) tra i grattacieli panoramici della Grande Mela, lo stupendo Summit One Vanderbilt. E poi il magnifico Central Park, che attraverseremo per la prima volta...

If the first of the four days discovering New York City has been decidedly intense and full of the Big Apple's iconic sights, the second all-New York day is fuller and you may find yourself making sometimes painful choices probably even more than  you did in the previous day. With the iconic view of Manhattan from Brooklyn Bridge Park still in our eyes, it is already time for the day 2, which in my itinerary falls on a Sunday and not by chance. It is the day, in fact, of the ghospel service, which has now become a must-attend event for every tourist passing through the Harlem area. Ghospel and much more, because in the early afternoon two iconic places await us, one as decidedly historic as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's most esteemed museums and, next, the latest addition (at least at the time of writing) among the Big Apple's scenic skyscrapers, the stunning Summit One Vanderbilt. And then the magnificent Central Park, which we are about to cross for the very first time....

ITINERARIO DI 4 GIORNI A NEW YORK - DAY 2

Highlights: Columbia University, messa Ghospel, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Summit One Vanderbilt

1) Columbia University e Messa Ghospel

Sì, di carne al fuoco oggi ce n'è davvero tanta ed il primo consiglio giornaliero è, semmai doveste avere il quinto giorno a disposizione per la visita di New York, di "pescare" tra le tante attrazioni odierne e relegarle all'ultima giornata, in modo tale da non dover correre per rispettare i tempi. E, a proposito di tempi, cercate di cominciare la giornata di buon mattino e, dalla solita fermata metro da cui comincereo ogni giornata newyorkese, prendere la metro rossa fino a Columbia University. Qui, in attesa di dirigervi ad Harlem, potrete fare due passi per una delle più famose e prestigiose Università newyorchesi, la più antica dello stato e la quinta negli interi Stati Uniti. Da qui sono passati quattro presidenti, 34 capi di stato, due segretari generali delle Nazioni Unite, 10 giudici della Corte Suprema, 103 Premi Nobel, 23 medaglie olimpiche, 33 vincitori di premi Oscar e 125 di Premio Pulitzer. Se la vostra intenzione è di fare semplicemente una breve passeggiata per il campus, potrete visitare la Low Library e la St. Paul’s Chapel. Da qui, una camminata di 20 minuti vi porterà nel cuore di Harlem. Come anticipato, ormai assistere la domenica alla messa Ghospel nel quartiere di Harlem è diventato un "must" ed il rischio è quello di venire "rimbalzati" (come è successo a me questa la terza volta in cui ho scelto di assistere alla messa) se non arrivate per tempo, a prescindere dalla chiesa che sceglierete. La mia preferita è la Salem United Methodist Church (2190 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd) di cui ho parlato in un precedente post (https://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/search/label/NEW%20YORK%3A%20LA%20MESSA%20GOSPEL). Se deciderete per il brunch post messa, un altro classico di Harlem la domenica, i tre ristoranti da non perdere sono Corner Social, Red Roosters (specializzato sul pollo) e Musette Winebar (enoteca all'europea).

2) Metropolitan Museum of Art

Proprio fuori la United Salem Methodist Church passa la linea M2 (blu) del bus che in venti minuti vi porterà alla destinazione successiva, lo splendido Metropolitan Museum of Art. E' un autentico tempio dell'arte grazie alle sue circa cinquecentomila opere d'arte e documenti storici. Ecco, se siete appassionati di arte, dedicherete molto più del tempo che gli ho dedicato io, probabilmente anche una  giornata intera (ricordatevelo in fase di organizzazione della giornata) a causa delle sue dimensioni, davvero clamorose. 

4-DAY ITINERARY IN NEW YORK - DAY 2

Highlights: Columbia University, Ghospel Mass, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Summit One Vanderbilt

1) Columbia University and Ghospel Mass

Well there is a lot on your plate today and the first daily tip is, if you ever have the fifth day to spend in New York City, to choose among today's many attractions and relegate at least one of them to the last day, so that you don't have to rush to keep on schedule. And, speaking of timing, try to start the day early in the morning. Fom the usual subway stop where I start visiting New York City every day, take the red subway to Columbia University. Here, while waiting to head to Harlem, you can take a stroll through one of New York's most famous and prestigious universities, the oldest in the state and the fifth oldest in the entire United States. Four presidents, 34 heads of state, two secretaries-general of the United Nations, 10 Supreme Court justices, 103 Nobel Prize winners, 23 Olympic medalists, 33 Academy Award winners and 125 Pulitzer Prize winners did come through here. If your intention is to simply take a short walk around campus, you can visit the Low Library and St. Paul's Chapel. From here, a 20-minute walk will take you into the heart of Harlem. As anticipated, attending Sunday Ghospel services in the Harlem neighborhood has become a must for many visitors and the risk is to get bounced back (as happened to me this the third time I chose to attend the service) if you do not arrive very early, no matter which church you choose. My favorite is Salem United Methodist Church (2190 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd) which I mentioned in a previous post (https://duecuoriperviaggiare.blogspot.com/search/label/NEW%20YORK%3A%20LA%20MESSA%20GOSPEL). If you decide on post-service brunch, another Harlem classic on Sundays, the three restaurants not to be missed are Corner Social, Red Roosters (specializing on chicken) and Musette Winebar (European-style wine bar).

2) Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Just outside the United Salem Methodist Church runs the M2 (blue) bus line that connects Harlem to your next destination, the amazing Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a veritable temple of art because of its some five hundred thousand works of art and historical documents. If you are an art lover, you could spend here much more time than I did, probably even a whole day (remember this when planning your day) because of its size, which is truly resounding.

Se invece sarete di corsa perchè "volete vedere più cose possibili", allora scegliete in base ai vostri gusti personali tralasciando le altre aree per eventuali future visite. Trovate però cinque minuti (anzi facciamo anche dieci minuti perchè non sarà facile trovare l'ascensore "giusto") per salire sul rooftop e godervi una splendida vista dello skyline di Manhattan.

If, on the other hand, you are in a hurry because you “want to see as much as possible,” then choose according to your personal tastes while leaving out other areas for possible future visits. However, take at least 5 minutes (actually ten minutes because it won't be easy to find the “right elevator") to go up to the rooftop and enjoy a great view of the Manhattan skyline.

3) Central Park

Se non è il parco più famoso al mondo poco ci manca, uno di quei luoghi in cui non vi stancherete mai di tornare anche se magari per soli pochi minuti. Ecco, il Metropolitan Museum of Art si trova proprio a ridosso di Central Park e quindi quale occasione migliore per cominciare ad esplorarne una piccola parte (quella a sud, la più "famosa") anche se il consiglio è quello di tornarci ogni volta che potete e anzi di visitare anche le zone meno turistiche (a nord) per stare davvero a contatto con la popolazione newyorkese. Le grandi attrazioni però, come detto, sono situate soprattutto a sud e, una volta usciti dal Metropolitan Museum of Art, potrete cominciare ad esplorare il meglio della parte sud. Cominciando dalla statua di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie (una donazione del filantropo George Delacorte) e passando poi per le altre grandi attrazioni. 

3) Central Park

If it's the most famous park in the world, one of those places you'll never get tired of... you'll just want to come back as soon as you can, even if for only a few minutes. Lo and behold, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is located right next to Central Park and so what better time to start exploring a small part of it (the one to the south, the most “famous”) although the advice is to go back there whenever you can and maybe visit the less touristy areas (to the north) if you want to really get in touch with the New York population. The big attractions, however, as mentioned, are located mostly in the south, and once leaving the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can start exploring the best of the south side. Beginning with the Alice in Wonderland statue (a donation from philanthropist George Delacorte) and then moving on to the other great attractions.

Nell'ordine, troverete la Bethesda Terrace e Fountain, la piazza più famosa del parco con la fontana forse ancor più famosa perchè disegnata da Emma Stabbins, prima donna newyorchese ad aver ottenuto un appalto. Successivamente incrocerete l'iconico e fotogenico Bow Bridge, conosciuto anche come il Ponte degli Innamorati, situato nel cuore del The Lake, il lago. Qui potrete anche noleggiare una barca a remi e fare un giretto per il lago. 

Do not miss the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, the park's most famous plaza with the fountain perhaps even more famous because it was designed by Emma Stabbins, the first New York woman to be awarded a contract. Next you will cross the iconic and photogenic Bow Bridge, also known as the Lovers' Bridge, located in the heart of The Lake. Here people are uaed to rent a rowboat and relax around the lake.

Ci stiamo spostando verso ovest (Central Park è una sorta di "rettangolo") e quindi verso Strawberry Fields, una piccola area dedicata alla memoria di John Lennon, che proprio a pochi passi da questo memoriale fu assassinato nel 1980. Scendendo verso l'entrata sud del parco, infine, noterete il Carousel, la storica giostra del 1951 e, per chi ama la fotografia, due luoghi dai quali scattare bellissime foto dello skyline di Manhattan. Il primo è Umpire Rock che vi regalerà la miglior vista possibile sui grattacieli ed il secondo è The Pond e Gapstown Bridge, uno stagno ricco di uccelli e tartarughe.

COME RAGGIUNGERE IL SUMMIT ONE VANDERBILT: dall'uscita sud di Central Park (angolo sud-est per l'esattezza, dove ritroverete la Fifth Avenue), salite a bordo del bus M1 o M4 (blu) che in 10 minuti dalla fermata 5 AV/ W 59 St vi porterà ai piedi del Summit One Vanderbilt (fermata 5 AV/W 41 ST)

We are moving westward (Central Park is a kind of “rectangle”) and then to Strawberry Fields, a small area dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, who just a few steps from this memorial was assassinated in 1980. Finally, as you descend toward the park's south entrance, you will notice the Carousel, the historic 1951 merry-go-round, and, for those who love photography, two places from which visitors can take beautiful photos of the Manhattan skyline. The first is Umpire Rock that will give you the best possible view of the skyscrapers and the second is The Pond and Gapstown Bridge, a pond full of birds and turtles.

HOW TO REACH THE SUMMIT ONE VANDERBILT: From the south exit of Central Park (southeast corner to be exact, along the Fifth Avenue), board the M1 or M4 (blue) bus (stop 5V/W 59 st) that will take you to the foot of Summit One Vanderbilt in 10 minutes (stop 5 AV/W 41 ST stop).

4) Summit One Vanderbilt

L’ultima grande novità tra gli osservatori della Grande Mela (2021) è il Summit One Vanderbilt che non ho dubbi troverà il suo spazio tra i "giganti di Manhattan" e darà filo da torcere agli storici Empire State Building, Top of The Rock, The Edge e One World Observatory. Il motivo è molto semplice: se negli altri casi ci si va "solo" per la vista, qui si viene per vivere un'esperienza e, soprattutto se viaggiate con bambini, questo grattacielo alto 397 metri è davvero da non perdere. Quali sono le attrazioni del Summit One Vanderbilt? La prima è Air, un’installazione permanente creata da Kenzo Digital, che consente al visitatore di vivere due esperienze particolari: Trascendence (I e II) e Affinity. 

4) Summit One Vanderbilt

The latest big thing among the Big Apple's observatories (2021) is Summit One Vanderbilt, which I have no doubt that will find its place among the "giants of Manhattan" and give the historic Empire State Building, Top of The Rock, The Edge and One World Observatory a run for their money. The reason is very simple: if in other cases, visitors go there “just” for the view, here you come for an experience and, especially if you are traveling with children, this 397-meter-tall skyscraper is really not to be missed. What are the attractions at Summit One Vanderbilt? The first is Air, a permanent installation created by Kenzo Digital, which allows visitors to have two special experiences, Transcendence (I and II) and Affinity.

Il primo è Trascendence I, al piano 91: vi ritroverete in un'enorme stanza coperta di specchi, con un gioco di riflessi che vi farà perdere il senso dell'orientamento, dandovi l'impressione di trovarvi in un luogo privo di confini. Affinity è invece il successivo "spazio gioco": qui vi attendono centinaia di sfere da lanciare in alto e con cui far divertire anche i vostri bambini. Ah, lo sfondo è sempre l'incredibile Skyline newyorchese...

The first is Transcendence I, on floor 91: you will find yourself in a huge room covered with mirrors, with a play of reflections that will make you lose your sense of direction, giving visitors the impression of being in a place without boundaries. Affinity, on the other hand, is the next “play space”: here hundreds of spheres can be thrown up and definitely entertain your children as well. Well, the background is always the incredible New York Skyline....

Finita qui? Macchè. Salendo al piano 92 troverete Trascendence II, un'altra esperienza labirintica che si affaccia sul piano inferiore (Trascendence I), tra riflessi davvero stranissimi che vi faranno dire "Beh, ma la persona che sto vedendo è qui accanto a me o al piano inferiore?". E poi c'è Levitation, che metterà a dura prova coraggio e... vertigini. Siamo sempre al piano 92, dove gli "Only the brave" riusciranno a posizionarsi sulle due terrazze trasparenti che sporgono dalla struttura principale. Volete sapere l'altezza in cui vi troverete? Davvero? Detto fatto: 324 metri! Ad una tariffa maggiorata rispetto al biglietto base potrete inoltre accedere ad Ascent, la più incredibile esperienza possibile all'interno del Summit One Vanderbilt: due ascensori esterni (tra i più grandi al mondo e con le pareti trasparenti), portano il visitatore ad un'altezza di addirittura 368 metri. Da qui si domina davvero tutta New York!

COME RAGGIUNGERE IL CHELSEA MARKET: metro grigia (S) fino a Times Square. Da qui raggiungete a piedi la stazione di Port Authority dove prenderete la linea blu (A, C oppure E) fino a 14 st/ 8 AV.

Is that the end of it? Of course not! Going up to floor 92 you will find Transcendence II, another labyrinthine experience that overlooks the lower floor (Transcendence I), amidst really weird reflections that will make you say: “Well, is the person I'm seeing here next to me or downstairs?” And then there is Levitation, which will test your courage and ... vertigo. We're still on floor 92, where only the brave will be able to cposition theirselves on the two transparent terraces that protrude from the main structure. Do you wanna know the height? Really? You said it: 324 meters! For an additional fee, visitors can also access Ascent, the most incredible experience inside Summit One Vanderbilt: two outdoor elevators (among the largest in the world and with transparent walls), take the visitor to a height of 368 meters. From here you can truly overlook all of New York City!

HOW TO REACH THE CHELSEA MARKET: gray subway (S) to Times Square. From here, walk to  Port Authority subway station and take the blue line (A, C or E) to 14 st/ 8 AV.

5) Chelsea Market e Little Island at Pier 55

Dopo una breve sosta al Chelsea Market, il più famoso mercato al coperto di Manhattan, dirigetevi a piedi verso il fiume Hudson per ammirare una delle ultime attrazioni create a Manhattan anche se, come potrete immaginare, non c'è luogo negli Stati Uniti che cambia così tanto aspetto da un anno all'altro come Manhattan. Mi riferisco a Little Island at Pier 55, il nuovo "parco galleggiante" di Manhattan che devo dire mi è piaciuto moltissimo. 

5) Chelsea Market and Little Island at Pier 55

After a brief stop at Chelsea Market, Manhattan's most famous indoor market, head on foot to the Hudson River to admire one of the latest attractions created in Manhattan although, as you might imagine, there is no place in the United States that changes so much from one year to the next as Manhattan. I am referring to Little Island at Pier 55, the new “floating park” in Manhattan: i must admit I enjoyed this park so much.

Sicuramente ha influito l'orario (tramonto) o forse il fatto che non sia ancora così pubblicizzato, ma da qui sono riuscito a scattare bellissime foto allo skyline, alla natura che circonda il pier ed al fiume Hudson. Con il New Jersey sullo sfondo. Cos'è Little Island? E' una struttura sospesa proprio sul fiume Hudson, un'oasi naturale costruita su 132 colonne di cemento a forma di tulipano. Siamo all'interno dell'immenso Hudson River Park (lungo 4 miglia), lungo il Pier 55, in mezzo a oltre 350 specie di fiori, piante e alberi, volutamente variegate per esaltare l'ambiente a seconda delle stagioni. Ed in autunno i colori erano davvero incredibili. Al suo interno troverete anche un anfiteatro all’aperto da quasi 700 posti.

The time of the day (sunset) has undoubtedly played a part or perhaps the fact that it is not so hyped, but from here I was able to take beautiful photos of the skyline, the nature surrounding the pier, and the Hudson River. With New Jersey in the background. What is Little Island? It is a structure suspended right over the Hudson River, a natural oasis built on 132 tulip-shaped concrete columns. We are inside the huge Hudson River Park (4 miles long), along Pier 55, amid more than 350 species of flowers, plants and trees, deliberately varied to enhance the environment according to the seasons. And in the fall, the colors were truly incredible. Inside you will also find a nearly 700-seat outdoor amphitheater.

6) Meatpacking District

Con le luci che vanno via via accendendovi, vi consiglio di restare nel Meatpacking District per cena. Situato tra Chelsea ed il "Village", il Meatpacking District, il cui nome deriva dagli stabilimenti di lavorazione della carne che caratterizzavano il quartiere, è stato completamente riqualificato ed ora è una delle aree più trendy di Manhattan. 

6) Meatpacking District

With the lights gradually going up, I recommend staying in the Meatpacking District for dinner. Located between Chelsea and the Village, the Meatpacking District, named for the meat-processing plants that used to characterize the neighborhood, has been completely redeveloped and is now one of the trendiest areas in Manhattan.

Dove c'erano gli stabilimenti, infatti, ora ci sono locali e ristoranti, boutique prestigiose e nel complesso un'atmosfera molto giovanile. La via principale del Meatpacking District è Gansevoort Street, che mantiene quasi inalterato l’aspetto retrò delle sue origini ottocentesche grazie alla presenza di depositi che un tempo erano usati per la produzione della carne, ma che oggi ospitano gallerie d’arte, caffè, negozi e ristoranti di lusso. E, a proposito di ristoranti, io ho optato per il... thailandese di Sappe (uno dei migliori a Manhattan), ma sono molto interessanti anche John's of Bleecker Street (pizza), Dos Caminos (messicano), The Standard Biergarten, Market Table e Blind Tiger Ale House.

Where there used to be factories, in fact, now there are clubs and restaurants, prestigious boutiques, and overall a very youthful atmosphere. The main street in the Meatpacking District is Gansevoort Street, which retains almost the retro look of its nineteenth-century origins thanks to the presence of warehouses that were once used for meat production but now house art galleries, cafes, stores and upscale restaurants. And speaking of restaurants, I opted for Sappe's Thai (one of the best in Manhattan), but John's of Bleecker Street (pizza), Dos Caminos (Mexican), The Standard Biergarten, Market Table and Blind Tiger Ale House are also very interesting.

4 days in New York City - the best itinerary and tips (day 3)

New York, o meglio Manhattan, è una città allegra, vivace, dove rumori e colori si confondono tra lo skyline dall'alba al tramonte. E a volte persino di notte. E poi c'è un luogo, a sud-ovest, non lontano dal fiume Hudson dove tutto questo si annulla. Dove non si sentono più i clacson, dove gli odori dei ristoranti si perdono nell'aria, dove (e sembra stranissimo dirlo quando si parla della Grande Mela...) regna il silenzio. No, World Trade Center, non è un luogo come un altro, ed è per questo che ho scelto di lasciarlo per la terza giornata, per darvi il tempo di cominciare a "dare del tu" alla città e prepararvi ad un pezzo di Manhattan che può essere visitato solamente in un modo. In silenzio. E, mio consiglio, subito al mattino, quando il museo 9/11 non è ancora affollato (ricordatevi che è chiuso al martedì) e tutta l'area di World Trade Center assomiglia ancora di più ad un teatro che mette in scena una ferita che non si è mai suturata. E forse mai lo farà...

New York City, or rather Manhattan, is a cheerful, vibrant city where noise and color merge across the skyline from dawn to dusk. And sometimes even at night. And then there is a place, to the southwest, not far from the Hudson River where all this is cancelled out. Where you can no longer hear the horns, where the smells of restaurants are lost in the air, where (and it seems very strange to say this when talking about the Big Apple...) silence reigns. No, World Trade Center, is not a place like any other, which is why I chose to leave it for the third day, to give you time to become familiar with the city and prepare you for a piece of Manhattan that can only be visited one way. In silence. My advice is to visit it right away in the morning, when the 9/11 museum is not yet crowded (remember it is closed on Tuesdays) and the whole World Trade Center area looks even more like a theater enacting a scar that never completely healed. And perhaps never will...

ITINERARIO DI 4 GIORNI A NEW YORK - DAY 3

Highlights: World Trade Center, Tribeca, Chinatown, Little Italy, Times Square ed Empire State Building.

1) World Trade Center

Con la linea della metro blu (A, C ed E) si raggiunge il distretto finanziario di Ground Zero - World Trade Center, il luogo di Manhattan che ormai tutto il mondo associa ai tragici eventi dell'11 settembre 2001 e quindi al più grande e grave attentato all'occidente della storia. Qui si viene per rendere omaggio a quel maledetto giorno e lo si fa nel silenzio di un'area dove l'unico rumore che sentirete è quello delle due fontane (enormi) che sorgono dove un tempo c'erano le due torri gemelle. Sopra il memoriale dell’11 settembre svetta l'altissima (541 metri) One World Trade Center, nota anche come Freedom Tower, alta ben 541 e la bellissima struttura dell'Oculus, realizzata da Santiago Calatrava. 

4-DAY ITINERARY IN NEW YORK - DAY 2

Highlights: World Trade Center, Tribeca, Chinatown, Little Italy, Times Square and Empire State Building.

1) World Trade Center

Take the blue subway line (A, C and E) to the financial district of Ground Zero - World Trade Center, the place in Manhattan that the whole world now associates with the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and thus with the greatest and most serious attack on the West in history. Here you come to pay tribute to that cursed day and do so in the silence of an area where the only noise you can hear is that of the two (huge) fountains that stand where the twin towers once stood. Towering above the 9/11 memorial is the (541 meters) One World Trade Center tower, also known as the Freedom Tower, a full 541 meters tall, and the beautiful Oculus structure, designed by Santiago Calatrava.

2) 9/11 Museum

Il 9/11 Museum è il museo dedicato alla tragedia dell’11 settembre, situato proprio là dove si trovavano un tempo le torri gemelle. Sfruttate il fatto che il museo apra già alle 9 del mattino (e ricordatevi sempre, è bene ripeterlo, che salvo rare circostanze il martedì rimane chiuso) per evitare lunghe code e, soprattutto per godervi il museo in relativa tranquillità. Il 9/11  Museum non è soltanto un museo, con reperti, immagini e scene dell’attentato terroristico, ma un vero e proprio luogo per mettere in contatto diretto i visitatori con chi ha vissuto in prima persona gli attentati dell’11 settembre 2001 o del 26 febbraio 1993, o con chi ha perso parenti e amici a causa di questi sanguinosi eventi. 2) 9/11 Museum

The 9/11 Museum is the museum dedicated to the 9/11 tragedy, located right where the twin towers once stood. Take advantage of the fact that the museum opens as early as 9 a.m. (and always remember that it's closed on tuesday except in rare circumstances) to avoid long lines and, most importantly to enjoy the museum in peace. The 9/11 Museum is not just a museum, with artifacts, images and scenes from the terrorist attack, but a real place to put visitors in contact with those who experienced firsthand the attacks of September 11, 2001 or February 26, 1993, or with those who lost relatives and friends to these bloody events. Behind the museum, shopaholics will be able to find their fill at Century 21.

3) Brookfield Place

Se a sud del 9/11 il luogo da non perdere per gli amanti dello shopping è il grande magazzino Century 21, a nord (al confine con il quartiere di Tribeca di cui parlerò a breve) c'è invece un shopping center decisamente più completo e dall'aspetto davvero imponente. Sto parlando di Brookfield Place, che spicca non solo per le grandi marche presenti, ma per la scenografica location in cui sono collocate, con vista sul fiume Hudson. 

3) Brookfield Place

If south of 9/11 the must-see place for shoppers is the Century 21 department store, to the north (bordering the Tribeca neighborhood which I will discuss shortly) there is instead a decidedly more complete and truly impressive-looking shopping center. I'm talking about Brookfield Place, which stands out not only for the big brands present, but for the scenic location in which they are located, overlooking the Hudson River.

Al suo interno, infatti, troverete anche diverse piante, un giardino invernale al chiuso, installazioni artistiche e diverse terrazze da cui godere di una vista bellissima vista sull’Hudson River.

In fact, inside you will also find various plants, an indoor winter garden, art installations, and several terraces from which to enjoy beautiful views of the Hudson River.

4) Il quartiere di Tribeca

Appena sopra World Trade Center sorge uno dei quartieri più affascinanti di Manhattan, se vogliamo anche più glamour visto che sono molti i vip del cinema americano ad aver fatto di Tribeca la loro dimora. Acronimo di Triangle Below Canal Street, Tribeca è un quartiere ricco di palazzi storici e negozi particolari ed in generale un'atmosfera completamente diversa da quella che troverete in altre aree di Manhattan. Cominciate l'esplorazione di questo quartiere da Washington Market Park ed in particolare non perdetevi il Giardino delle Farfalle, la biblioteca gratuita ed il Court Mural, dove ammirare a rotazione opere di street art. Ah, dimenticatevi per un po' della metro: camminate per le vie di Tribeca sino a raggiungere gli stop successivi.

4) The Tribeca neighborhood

Just above World Trade Center rises one of Manhattan's most charming neighborhoods, if you will, even more glamorous since so many American movie celebrities have made Tribeca their home. An acronym for Triangle Below Canal Street, Tribeca is a neighborhood full of historic buildings and distinctive stores and in general a completely different atmosphere from what you would find in other areas of Manhattan. Start your exploration of this neighborhood from Washington Market Park and in particular don't miss the Butterfly Garden, the free library and the Court Mural, where you can admire rotating works of street art. Well, forget about the subway for a while: just walk the streets of Tribeca until you reach the next stops.

5) Pier 25 - Hudson River Park

Anche ieri avevamo visitato uno dei Pier che si affacciano sul fiume Hudson. Eravamo a nord, alla Little Island. Oggi siamo più a sud, in un altro molo, il più lungo di tutti quelli facente parte del Hudson River Park: il Pier 25. Qui ce n'è davvero per tutti: per i più piccoli che potranno giocare a mini-golf, per chi vuol fare sport (campi da beach volley ed arrampicata) e per chi ama la storia grazie alla Lilac (imbarcazione del 1933).

5) Pier 25 - Hudson River Park

Yesterday we visited one of the piers overlooking the Hudson River. We were to the north, at Little Island. Today we are further south, in another Pier, the longest of all those that are part of the Hudson River Park: Pier 25. Here there is something for everyone: for the little ones who can play mini-golf, for those who want to play sports (beach volleyball and climbing fields) and for those who love history thanks to the Lilac (boat from 1933).

6) Staple Street Skybridge e The Bean Sculpture

Dal Pier 25, una breve passeggiata vi condurrà lungo la via più stretta di tutta Manhattan, la Staple Street, lunga solamente due "blocchi", famosa per il ponte in ferro decisamente fotogenico. Non lontano, incastonato ai piedi di un grattacielo, non potrete non notare una scultura che vi rimanderà al mitico Cloud Gate del Millennium Park di Chicago, il famoso "fagiolo". Ecco, non aspettatevi lo stesso fascino dell'originale, ma anche il "The Bean Sculpture" merita una breve sosta mentre attraversate il quartiere di Tribeca in direzione Chinatown. La scultura creata da Anish Kapoor si trova proprio sotto il grattacielo 56 Leonard Street, considerato da molti l'edificio più bello (ed il più alto) di tutto il quartiere di Tribeca.     

    6) Staple Street Skybridge and The Bean Sculpture

From Pier 25, a short walk takes you down the narrowest street in all of Manhattan, Staple Street, only two blocks long and famous for its decidedly photogenic iron bridge. Not far away, nestled at the foot of a skyscraper, you can't fail to notice a sculpture that will remind you of the mythical Cloud Gate in Chicago's Millennium Park, the famous “bean.” Here, don't expect the same charm as the original, but “The Bean Sculpture” is also worth a brief stop as you walk through the Tribeca neighborhood towards Chinatown. The sculpture created by Anish Kapoor is located just below the 56 Leonard Street skyscraper, considered by many to be the most beautiful (and tallest) building in the entire Tribeca neighborhood.

7) Columbus Park

Se state provenendo da Tribeca, il Columbus Park, distante 500 metri dal The Bean Sculpture, sarà una sorta di "gate town" verso lo stupendo quartiere di Chinatown. Chiamato così in onore di Cristoforo Colombo, il parco si trova in quella che un tempo non era un'area propriamente "safe", anzi diciamo proprio uno dei ghetti più pericolosi di New York. Ora è frequentato dalla comunità cinese che lo utilizza come punto di ritrovo per fare giochi da tavolo. 

8) Chinatown

Con i suoi 90 mila abitanti la Chinatown di Manhattan è una delle più grandi comunità asiatiche fuori dall'Asia e ora casa anche di molti americani che, stanchi del caro affitti che affligge la Grande Mela, scelgono proprio il quartiere cinese per vivere. Ecco, mentre la vicina Little Italy è proprio "little", ovvero piccola, Chinatown è invece un quartiere da non perdere e ricco di luoghi da poter visitare, partendo da Canal Street, la via principale. Interessante anche Doyers, particolarmente amata dai fotografi per le sue insegne e la famosa "curva" che la caratterizza, una rarità a New York per via del Grid Plan del 1811 che imponeva la costruzione “a griglia”. Così come Pell Street, caratterizzata dagli edifici in mattoni rossi e ricca di... parrucchieri tanto da esser nominata "Barbershop Alley", il vicolo dei parrucchieri. Non lontano potrete scorgere la Edward Mooney House, famosa per essere la casa più antica della Grande Mela. 

7) Columbus Park

If you are coming from Tribeca, Columbus Park, 500 meters away from The Bean Sculpture, will be a sort of gate town to the wonderful Chinatown neighborhood. Named after Christopher Columbus, the park is located in what was once not exactly a safe area, well let's just say one of the most dangerous ghettos in New York City. It is now frequented by the Chinese community who use it as a gathering place to play board games.

8) Chinatown

With a population of 90,000, Manhattan's Chinatown is one of the largest Asian communities outside Asia and now also home to many Americans who, tired of the high rents that plague the Big Apple, choose the very Chinese neighborhood to live in. Here, while nearby Little Italy is just “little,”, Chinatown is instead a neighborhood not to be missed and full of places you can visit, starting with Canal Street, the main thoroughfare. Also interesting is Doyers, particularly beloved by photographers for its signs and the famous “curve” that characterizes it, a rarity in New York due to the Grid Plan of 1811 that mandated “grid” construction. So is Pell Street, characterized by its red brick buildings and filled with... hairdressers so much so that it has been named “Barbershop Alley.” Not far away you can glimpse the Edward Mooney House, famous for being the oldest house in the Big Apple.

9) Little Italy

Quella che un tempo ospitava ben 10 mila italiani e che faceva una discreta concorrenza alla Italian Harlem è ormai un lontano ricordo. Già, perchè la Little Italy di oggi sta lentamente scomparendo a causa degli affitti sempre più elevati e dalla concorrenza della vicina Chinatown. Però val la pena passarci, perchè è da qui che è cominciato il sogno di molti italiani. Il cuore pulsante è la vivace Mulberry Street, ma non fatevi ingannare (soprattutto se siete veri italiani), dai tanti ristoranti presenti. Sono quasi tutti autentiche trappole per turisti. 

9) Little Italy

The one that was once home to as many as 10,000 Italians and provided a fair amount of competition to Italian Harlem is now a distant memory. That's right, because today's Little Italy is slowly disappearing due to rising rents and competition from nearby Chinatown. It's worth passing through, though, because this is where the dream of many Italians began. The beating heart is bustling Mulberry Street, but don't be fooled (especially if you are a real Italian), by the many restaurants there. They are almost all genuine tourist traps.

10) Times Square

Lo so, è impossibile resistere sino al terzo giorno nella Grande Mela prima di visitare la "piazza" principale della città e molti di voi ci saranno già passati anche solo come transito per raggiungere altri luoghi. Però, se non l'avete fatto, questo è il momento per visitare Times Square, perchè avrete a disposizione buona parte del tardo pomeriggio prima di recarvi all'Empire State Building ed ammirare il tramonto newyorchese. Ciò che la contraddistingue è la confusione ed il gioco di luci proveniente dai grattacieli: enormi insegne, schermi luminosi e tabelloni pubblicitari sono quasi ipnotizzanti!

10) Times Square

I know, it's impossible to resist until your third day in the Big Apple before visiting the city's main “square,” and many of you have already been there even only during a stopover before reaching othere places in Manhattan. However, if you did not, this is definitely the time to visit Times Square, because you'll probably be able to spend a good part of the late afternoon there before heading to the Empire State Building and admiring the New York sunset. However, what distinguishes Times Square is the hustle and bustle and the play of lights coming from the skyscrapers: huge signs, light screens and billboards are almost mesmerizing!

11) Empire State Building

Il grattacielo più famoso di New York? Al Tramonto? E con le luci di Manhattan che vanno via via accendendosi? Ne è valsa davvero la pena aspettare per godere dell'Empire State Building nel momento migliore della giornata, quando il sole tramonta dietro l'Hudson River e... New York semplicemente si accende. 4 days in New York City - the best itinerary and tips (day 4)

Ci siamo. E' l'ultima giornata tra le strade della "Grande Mela", tra grandi musei che hanno fatto la storia della città, quartieri iconici e un parco tra gli ultimi arrivati, ma non per questo meno affascinante del più famoso Central Park. E poi la via forse più famosa di tutta New York City, la mitica Fifth Avenue, tra grandi marche e luoghi inquadrati in centinaia e centinaia di pellicole. Già, perchè anche l'ultimo giorno saprà farci sognare, forse anche più degli altri...

This is it. It's the last day through the streets of the Big Apple, among great museums that have made the city's history, iconic neighborhoods, and a park among the latest arrivals, but no less fascinating than the more famous Central Park. And then perhaps the most famous street in all of New York City, the legendary Fifth Avenue, where visitors can just admire brand names and places framed in hundreds and hundreds of movies Yes, because even the last day will make us dream, perhaps even more than the others....

ITINERARIO DI 4 GIORNI A NEW YORK - DAY 4

Highlights: MoMa museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Highline Park, Greenwich Village, Soho and 5th Avenue

1) MoMa museum of Modern Art

Una camminata di 10 minuti buoni da Times Square vi regala l'ingresso in uno dei templi (anzi, forse "Il tempio") dell'arte moderna, il MoMa Museum of Modern Art. La sua collezione è semplicemente impareggiabile, si parla infatti di 200.000 opere tra quadri, sculture, fotografie e arte multimediale. Il museo apre le sue porte alle 10.30 del mattino, per cui se siete piuttosto mattinieri il consiglio è quello di recarvi prima a visitare un'altra Mecca, legata a 360 gradi al mondo dell'arte, della danza, del teatro e della musica. Sto parlando ovviamente del Lincoln Center, casa tra le altre anche della mitica Julliard, che dal 1905 fornisce un’educazione artistica di altissimo livello a musicisti, ballerini e attori provenienti da tutto il mondo.

COME RAGGIUNGERE IL GUGGENHEIM: mezz’ora a piedi oppure linea blu (M1) del bus (5th avenue/E 65th Street fino a 5th avenue/E 90 st).

4-DAY ITINERARY IN NEW YORK - DAY 4

Highlights: MoMa museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Highline Park, Greenwich Village, Soho and 5th Avenue

1) MoMa museum of Modern Art

A good 10-minute walk from Times Square leads visitors to one of the temples (or rather, perhaps “The Temple”) of modern art, the MoMa Museum of Modern Art. Its collection is simply unparalleled; in fact, we're talking about 200,000 works including paintings, sculptures, photographs and multimedia art. The museum opens its doors at 10:30 a.m., so if you are quite an early riser, the advice is  to visit first another Mecca, which is totally related to the world of art, dance, theater and music. I'm talking, of course, about Lincoln Center, home among others to the legendary Julliard, which has been providing the highest level of arts education to musicians, dancers and actors from all over the world since 1905.

HOW TO REACH THE GUGGENHEIM: A half-hour walk or blue (M1) bus line (5th avenue/E 65th Street to 5th avenue/E 90 st.).

2) Guggenheim 

Dalla passione di Solomon Guggenheim nasce questo museo che rappresenta il "mutamento dell'arte". Un must per gli appassionati anche se, ed è un parere del tutto personale, non ha nulla a che vedere per grandezza e bellezza con quello di Bilbao, nei Paesi Baschi. L'alternativa al Guggenheim potrebbe essere il Museo di Storia Naturale (American Museum of Natural History), un'altra icona della città di New York, che vi permetterà un autentico viaggio nel tempo come accadde ai protagonisti di "Una notte al museo".

2) Guggenheim 

From the passion of Solomon Guggenheim comes this museum that represents the “changing of art.” A must for enthusiasts even if, and this is a completely personal opinion, it does not compare in size and beauty with the one in Bilbao, Basque Country. The alternative to the Guggenheim might be the American Museum of Natural History (American Museum of Natural History), another New York City icon, which will allow you an authentic journey through time as happened to the protagonists of “Night at the Museum.” 

HOW TO REACH HIGH LINE PARK: green line 4, 5 or 6 from 86th street to Grand Central/42nd, from there take purple line 7 to 34 st/Hudson yards

3) High line Park

La maschera la getto subito. E' una delle aree che più preferisco di Manhattan, un'autentica oasi di pace in mezzo ai grattacieli. Già, l'High Line Park è proprio questo, una lunga ferrovia sopraelevata in disuso e trasformata in uno dei parchi più scenografici e suggestivi di tutta America. L'High Line, che un tempo era il nome della ferrovia sopraelevata inaugurata del 1934, nasce a ridosso del The Vessel, una delle ultime attrazioni costruite nel cuore di Manhattan, insieme al vicino The Edge, il ponte di osservazione all'aperto più alto dell'emisfero occidentale e la seconda piattaforma di osservazione più alta di New York. 

3) High line Park

I'm going to drop the mask off right now. It is one of my most favorite areas in Manhattan, a true oasis of peace in the midst of skyscrapers. High Line Park is just that, a long disused elevated railroad turned into one of the most scenic and striking parks in all of America. The High Line, which used to be the name of the inaugurated 1934 elevated railroad, was born close to The Vessel, one of the last attractions built in the heart of Manhattan, along with the nearby The Edge, the tallest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere and the second-highest observation deck in New York City.

Ecco, come vedete, in questa zona potrete spendere anche una mezza giornata buona, ma il mio consiglio è invece quello di percorrere l'intero High Line Park sino al quartiere di Chelsea. Sarà un'esperienza davvero indimenticabile.

Here, as you can see, visitors could spend even a good half day in this area, but my advice instead is to walk the entire High Line Park all the way to the Chelsea neighborhood. It will be a truly unforgettable experience.

4) Greenwich Village

Il quartiere popolare di Greenwich Village, che incrocerete non appena avrete lasciato l'High Line Park e superato Chelsea, è il simbolo dell'arte, della musica alternativa e della controcultura newyorchese. Insomma, un quartiere diverso dagli altri, fatto di strade e vicoli pittoreschi lontani dal caos tipico della Grande Mela. Il cuore pulsante del quartiere è Washington Square Park, dove artisti di strada, giocatori di scacchi e semplici curiosi s'incontrano ogni giorno rendendolo, di fatto, il simbolo di tutto il "Village". Nella parte centrale di Greenwich Village, non potrete non notare il "Friend's Apartment"... esatto, la casa di Friends, che troverete al 90 di Bedford Street.

4) Greenwich Village

The working-class neighborhood of Greenwich Village, which you will cross as soon as you leave High Line Park and pass Chelsea, is a symbol of New York's art, alternative music, and counterculture. In short, a neighborhood unlike any other, made up of quaint streets and alleys far from the typical chaos of the Big Apple. The beating heart of the neighborhood is Washington Square Park, where street performers, chess players and the merely curious meet every day making it, in fact, the symbol of the whole “Village.” In the central part of Greenwich Village, be sure you do not miss the “Friend's Apartment” -- that's right, the Friends' house, which is located at 90 Bedford Street.

5) SoHo

Manca ancora un quartiere da esplorare tra quelli che hanno fatto (e fanno ancora) la storia di Manhattan, ovvero SoHo, dove i palazzi in mattoni rossi con le scale antincendio all'esterno vi riporteranno alla mente i tantissimi film e serie tv che proprio qui sono stati ambientati. Se siete alla ricerca di una fotografia perfetta del quartiere, dirigetevi nel Cast Iron Disrtrict, che raggruppa moltissimi degli edifici di cui abbiamo parlato. Greene Street è la via principale, ma non perdetevi neppure Prince Street, Spring Street e West Broadway Street.

5) SoHo

There is still one neighborhood left to explore among those that have made (and still make) Manhattan history, namely SoHo, where the red brick buildings with fire escapes outside will bring to mind the many movies and TV series that were set right here. If you are looking for a perfect picture of the neighborhood, head to the Cast Iron Disrtrict, which groups together a great many of the buildings we have mentioned. Greene Street is the main thoroughfare, but don't miss also Prince Street, Spring Street, and West Broadway Street either.

6) Fifth Avenue

La Fifth Avenue è la strada simbolo di New York e tra le vie più conosciute in tutto il mondo. Corre lungo l'East Side di Manhattan, da sud a nord, ed è piuttosto lunga al contrario di quello che il comune visitatore possa pensare. E no, non l'ho lasciata per ultimo perchè non mi ha colpito particolarmente, ma perchè anche nei giorni scorsi ci siamo passati anche se solo per brevissimo tempo, o perchè di passaggio (la Fifth Avenue costeggia tutto Central Park) o perchè stavamo visitando alcuni dei musei che compongono il Museum Mile, un miglio ricco di... musei appunto! No, io semplicemente adoro la Quinta Strada" ed ogni mio viaggio newyorchese (siamo a cinque nel 2024), comincia sempre da qui, dalla Fifth Avenue e dal primo storico Shake Shack (la miglior catena di burger in assoluto) situato nel Madison Square Park, proprio di fronte allo scenografico Flat Iron Building, unico nel suo genere grazie alla sua forma triangolare. Vi consiglio di cominciarlo qui il vostro viaggio lungo l'infinita Fifth Avenue e di terminarla a ridosso di Central Park, non lontano dalla Trump Tower. Se mi state seguendo, vi attendono circa 3 km di Quinta Strada che diventeranno via via più ricchi di negozi, alcuni davvero suggestivi. I miei preferiti? Quello della M&M's e l'Nba Store ovviamente...

6) Fifth Avenue

Fifth Avenue is the iconic street of New York City and among the most well-known streets in the world. It runs along the East Side of Manhattan, from south to north, and is quite long contrary to what the ordinary visitor might think. And no, I didn't leave it for last because it didn't particularly impress me, but because even in the past few days we have passed through it if only briefly, either because we were passing by (Fifth Avenue runs along the whole of Central Park) or because we were visiting some of the museums that make up the Museum Mile, a mile full of... museums! No, I simply adore Fifth Avenue” and every New York trip I take (5), always starts from here, from Fifth Avenue and the first historic Shake Shack (the best burger chain ever) located in Madison Square, Park right in front of the scenic Flat Iron Building, unique because of its triangular shape. I recommend that you begin your journey down the endless Fifth Avenue here and end it abutting Central Park, not far from Trump Tower. If you're following me, in the next two miles the Fifth Avenue will gradually become richer and richer with stores, some really striking. My favorites? The M&M's one and the Nba Store of course....

7) Bryant Park

Risalendo la Fifth Avenue verso nord, poco dopo aver superato l'Empire State Building, fermatevi nello stupendo Bryant Park che, grazie alla sua posizione davvero centrale, è chiamato dai locals anche Manhattan’s Town Square, ossia la piazza cittadina di Manhattan. Qui le attività si susseguono seguendo le varie stagioni: troverete mercatini o spettacoli, ma anche la possibilità di rilassarsi approfittando anche del wifi gratuito.

Going up the Fifth Avenue north, shortly after passing the Empire State Building, stop in the beautiful Bryant Park, which, thanks to its really central location, is also called Manhattan's Town Square by locals. Here, activities follow the various seasons: you will find markets or shows, but also the chance to relax while also taking advantage of the free wifi.

8) Diamond District

L'ultima parte della Fifth Avenue è caratterizzata dal Diamond District. Siamo nella zona più trafficata e turistica della Quinta Strada, dove non mancano attrazioni e luoghi iconici. Cominciate l'esplorazione dalla Cattedrale di San Patrizio, la più grande chiesa cattolica neogotica degli Stati Uniti, e poi dirigetevi verso il mitico Rockfeller Center, il complesso di 19 edifici che offre il suo miglior volto nel periodo natalizio quando, all'interno della Rockfeller Plaza, vengono allestite l'incantevole pista di pattinaggio e l'enorme albero di Natale. 

8) Diamond District

The last part of Fifth Avenue is characterized by the Diamond District. We are in the busiest and most touristy area of Fifth Avenue, where there is no shortage of iconic sights and attractions. Begin your exploration at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest neo-Gothic Catholic church in the United States, and then head to the legendary Rockefeller Center, the 19-building complex that puts on its best face at Christmas time when the enchanting ice rink and huge Christmas tree are set up inside Rockefeller Plaza.

Nei dintorni non perdetevi neppure il Radio City Music Hall, uno degli edifici più belli di New York, talmente significativo nella storia dello spettacolo americano da essere soprannominato The Showplace of the Nation. E, "last but not least", salite in cima al Ge Building, conosciuto nel mondo come Top of The Rock, una validissima alternativa all'Empire State Building.

E PER CHI AVESSE PIU' TEMPO...

... New York ha sempre qualcosa di alternativo da offrire. Vi avevo parlato durante la prima giornata della possibilità, visitando Brooklyn, di spingersi fino a Coney Island, la "spiaggia di New York". Qui, soprattutto nel periodo primaverile ed estivo, potrete passeggiare tra negozi di souvenir e le storiche giostre del quartiere, ed assaggiare l'hot dog nel luogo dove è... nato, ovvero da Nathan's. Oppure, da Manhattan, salite a bordo della Roosevelt Island Tramway (la corsa è compresa nella Metrocard) e dirigetevi a Roosevelt Island, lungo l'East River. Potete starci due minuti dopo aver fatto il giro sul tramway o girarla tutta, ammirando le sue attrazioni principali, ovvero il Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, l'Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, The Octagon, Blackwell Island Light ed il Lighthouse Park. Un'alternativa a Roosevelt Island (nel periodo estivo) è Governors Island. Al suo interno potrete praticare Kayak gratuitamente, noleggiare una bicicletta e recarvi a The Hills per una delle viste più belle su Manhattan e Statua della Libertà o semplicemente vivere una giornata nella natura lontani dal caos della città. C’è un servizio traghettamento ogni giorno che collega la Governors Island a Manhattan, il Governors Island Ferry. C'è una corsa ogni 30 o 40 minuti dal Battery Maritime Building che si trova al 10 di South Street e costa $4. Un'altra possibilità è quella di salire a bordo dello Staten Island Ferry e visitare Staten Island, oppure addentrarvi nel Queen's ed in particolare nel quartiere di Astoria, che vanta la seconda comunità greca più grande al mondo fuori dal Mediterraneo. Astoria è un quartiere multietnico, forse turisticamente meno rilevante di altri più acclamati dalle guide, ma è una zona dove si respira una New York un filo meno turistica e più vicina agli stili e alle abitudini dei newyorkesi residenti. Gli highlights a livello turistico sono Socrates Park, Astoria Park e la Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden.

I had told you during the first day about the possibility, while visiting Brooklyn, of going as far as Coney Island, the “beach of New York.” Here, especially in the spring and summertime, you can stroll among souvenir stores and the neighborhood's historic rollercoasters, and taste the hot dog at the place where it all began, which is at Nathan's. Or, from Manhattan, board the Roosevelt Island Tramway (the ride is included in the Metrocard) and head to Roosevelt Island, along the East River. You can stay there for few minutes after riding the tramway or go around the whole thing, admiring its main attractions, namely the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, The Octagon, Blackwell Island Light and Lighthouse Park. An alternative to Roosevelt Island (in the summertime) is Governors Island. Inside you can kayak for free, rent a bicycle and head to The Hills for one of the most beautiful views of Manhattan and Statue of Liberty, or simply experience a day in nature away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a ferry service every day that connects Governors Island to Manhattan, the Governors Island Ferry. There is a ride every 30 to 40 minutes from the Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street and costs $4. Another option is to board the Staten Island Ferry and visit Staten Island, or delve into Queen's and in particular the Astoria neighborhood, which boasts the second largest Greek community in the world outside the Mediterranean. Astoria is a multi-ethnic neighborhood, perhaps less touristically relevant than others more acclaimed by guidebooks, but it is an area where one breathes a New York that is a little less touristy and closer to the styles and habits of resident New Yorkers. Tourist-level highlights are Socrates Park, Astoria Park, and the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden.
