2011 trip: sognando California (day 2, Grand Canyon)

Ci eravamo lasciati con l'impatto, parecchio forte, con la realtà americana. Siamo a Barstow, nel cuore della California, lungo la route 66 che ci farà compagnia per un'altra giornata ancora. Il fuso orario ci obbliga a svegliarci alle 4.30 del mattino e, nonostante l'ora, il caldo desertico è già tremendo. Dobbiamo aspettare almeno le 6.30 per poter scendere a far colazione e quindi ne approfittiamo per compilare sia il diario di viaggio che il quadernino con tutte le spese fatte sino a quel momento. Ogni uscita era calcolata al centesimo. Terribile.

We were talking about the impact, quite strong, with the American reality. We are in Barstow, in the heart of California along the Route 66. The jet lag forces us to wake up at 4:30 in the morning and, despite the time, the desert heat is already tremendous. We have to wait 6.30 a.m. to be able to go down and have breakfast and so we take the opportunity to fill in both the journey travel and the little book with all the costs. Each penny was calculated. Terrible.

Usciamo, quasi di soppiatto dalla camera e, al mattino, Barstow sembra quasi una città. Anche la piscina fa meno paura... (p.s. è la solita città nel deserto americano come mille altre ne troveremo, nulla di sconvolgente eh...ma quando non sei abituato, la prima fa sempre un certo effetto)

Outside our room Barstow, in the morning, looks like a city. Also the pool is less scary... (p.s. Barstow is the typical town of the american desert, nothing against it...but when it's your first time...)

Una volta appurato che la macchina c'è ancora, siamo pronti per il tappone odierno. Destinazione Grand Canyon.

The car is still in the parking, we are ready to go! Grand Canyon is waiting for us...

400 miglia, più di 600 chilometri nel deserto del Mojave. Potete immaginare dopo due-tre ore in cui tutto sembra affascinante cosa si possa provare alla quinta...

400 miles in the Mojave desert. You can imagine, after two to three hours when everything is fascinatin,g the fourth, fifth and the sixth hours...

Attraversiamo sostanzialmente tutta la California (da ovest a est)...

fino ad entrare in  Arizona, dove ci aspetta (moooolto in la...) il Grand Canyon. P.s. Fossimo atterrati a Vegas il parco lo avremmo avuto a tre ore di distanza. Fenomeni.

E' mezzogiorno e siamo ancora lontani dal parco, ne approfittiamo per mangiare il primo (di una lunga serie) dei tipici Hot Dog americani in una delle poche aree di servizio che troviamo. Tra l'altro l'hot dog te lo devi costruire da solo e impieghiamo non meno di dieci minuti a trovare il pane, fino a quando finalmente un motociclista si avvicina a noi con lo stesso sorriso del controllore all'aereoporto e ne prepara uno. Salvi.

It's midday and we are still far from the park. We take the opportunity to eat the first typical American Hot Dog. You have to build it alone and after ten minutes we are still looking for the bread. Finally a motorcyclist approaches us with the same smile of the controller at the airport and prepares one for himself. Safe.

Avvicinandoci al Grand Canyon non solo cambia il paesaggio intorno a noi, decisamente meno desertico, ma addirittura pioviggina, impensabile fino ad un centinaio di miglia prima.

Approaching the Grand Canyonnot only changing the landscape around us, but also the weather. No more heat, but a lot of rain... unthinkable a hundred miles before .

Alle 14 arriviamo finalmente al parco, il cui costo è come spesso accade "per veicolo" (25 dollari) e vale 7 giorni.

At 2 pm we finally arrive at the park. The enter fee is 25 dollar (by car) and it lasts for seven days.

Dormiamo direttamente nel parco e, dopo aver lasciato i bagagli nella nostra camera a due passi (nel vero senso della parola) dai canyon...

We sleep inside the park and our room is really close to the canyon. 

...decidiamo di bere qualcosa al bar prima di avventurarci nel parco. Il nostro inglese era lontano dall'inglese che parliamo (o almeno ci proviamo...) oggi e chiediamo ad una cameriera del ristorante con una pronuncia molto "italica" dove sia il bar "Where is the bar": lei non capisce e chiama un paio di colleghi con la faccia da "ma questi due cosa vogliono?... E noi, ancora, "where is the bar", sempre pronunciato con la "a" italiana, "bar"... alla fine arriva una terza persona ed esclama "oh, bar", pronunciando la "a" quasi come se fosse una "o"... Per la seconda volta in due giorni ci troviamo a dire... "ma dove siamo finiti?" Da quel momento però la pronuncia di "bar" non la sbaglieremo più...

We decide to drink something before going to the canyons. Our English was far from the english we speak (or at least we try to speak ... ) today and while we were looking for the bar we see a waitress. "Excuse me, where is the bar" we say with the "italian pronunciation"... she doesn't understand and call two colleagues... Nobody undestand us. finally a waiter realizes that we were looking for the "baaaaar" (american pronunciation).  From that moment, however, we haven't forgotten the pronunciation of " bar"...

Sono le 4, è tempo di visitare il parco e approfittiamo della navetta messa a disposizione dei visitatori per raggiungere i vari punti d'interesse.

It's 4 pm. It's time to visit the park, the shuttle is waiting for us...

 Un luogo incredibile, secondo probabilmente solamente alle White Sands e al pari della Monument Valley tra quelli che abbiamo visitato.

An amazing place, it is at the second place with the Monument Valley after the White Sands National Park in our personal ranking.

A volte sembra di essere sospesi nel vuoto (tipica foto dell'Ale)

e da certe posizioni si riesce addirittura a vedere il Colorado River...

 e riusciamo, grazie alla bontà dell'autista della navetta, a vedere nello stesso tempo tramonto (super) e arcobaleno, ma purtroppo la fotocamera aveva deciso di abbandonarci sul più bello...

and, thanks to the kindness of the driver of the shuttle, we can see at the same time the sunset and the rainbow, but unfortunately the camera had decided to abandon us...

Concludiamo la serata nel "nostro" bar, l'unico del parco, con musica country live...

We finish  the evening in "our " bar, the only one in the park, with live country music ...

e il primo burger americano di sempre, con la testa già a Las Vegas...

CONSIDERAZIONI SUL GRAND CANYON: la prima da fare è che, se volete pernottare all'interno del parco è importante prenotare per tempo. Capitolo "tempo da dedicare": noi abbiamo speso un pomeriggio nel parco e la mattina successiva eravamo già in viaggio. In questo modo non abbiamo avuto la possibilità di vivere tre esperienze "da Gran Canyon" come il camminare sullo Skywalk (cercate su google le immagini) perchè dall'altra parte rispetto a dove eravamo noi o ancora, fare rafting lungo il Colorado o ancora visitare il Canyon in elicottero. Premesso che non sappiamo i costi né del rafting e neppure del giro in elicottero perchè abbiamo scartato a malincuore le due avventure a priori (così come le camminate, che non fanno per noi), diciamo che, se non fossero tali costi proibitivi e verificata la reale possibilità che sia "per tutti", prendetevi un giorno in più nel parco e avventuratevi.

REMARKS ON THE GRAND CANYON : If you want to sleep inside the park you need to book in advance.  We spent an afternoon in the park and the next morning we were already on the road. In this way we did not have the possibility to live three amazing experiences: to walk on the Skywalk because it was at the other side of the Rym, ratfing in the Colorado River and visit the canyon with the elichopter.
