New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (Day 16)

In lontananza sentiamo un gorgoglìo che arriva dal lavandino... poco male, avevamo in programma di svegliarci presto e lasciare per sempre quel motel, anche perchè, anche oggi, i km sono tanti! Chiudiamo i bagagli, carichiamo la macchina e ci rechiamo alla reception dell'altro hotel per fare il check out e colazione, molto deludente anche quella: muffin secchi, yogurt (fortunatamente per l'Ale) e delle barrette ai cereali che prontamente infiliamo in tasca di nascosto: sarà la nostra merenda...

In the distance we hear a strange sound that comes from the sink ... not bad, we had planned to wake up early and leave for ever this motel, also because, even today, there are so many miles to do! We close our bags, load the car and then go to the reception of the other hotel for the check out and breakfast, even that very disappointing: dried muffin, yogurt and cereal bars which will be our snack in the afternoon... 

Da Jackson a Salt Lake City ci aspettano i consueti 500 chilometri, ma c'è molta curiosità nell'attraversare lo stato dell'Idaho, da molti raccontato come uno dei più affascinanti a livello naturalissimo. L'intenzione è quella di fermarci per pranzo e mangiare le famose patate, ma siamo ancora pienissimi dalla sera precedente e ci accontentiamo di un tipico diner dove mangeremo salmone affumicato e insalata di frutta.

From Jackson to Salt Lake City: we expect to drive for the usual 500 km, but there is a lot of curiosity in crossing the state of Idaho because many people told us that Idaho is one of the most fascinating state for its nature. The intention is to stop for lunch and eat the famous potatoes, but we are still full from the previous evening and we are chose a diner where we  eat smoked salmon and fruit salad.

Ci rimettiamo alla guida e a metà pomeriggio entriamo finalmente in Utah. Notiamo anche qualche incendio lungo il "nulla" che spesso contraddistingue questo stato: il primo stop è Antelope Island, una piccola isola, non molto distante da Salt Lake city, all'interno del famoso lago salato dello Utah (livello di salinità seconda solo al Mar Morto).

It's afternoon and finally we enter in Utah. We also note some fire along the "nothing" that often characterizes this state... the first stop is Antelope Island, a small island, not far from Salt Lake City, inside the famous salt lake of Utah (salinity level second only to Dead Sea). 

Isola che è collegata alla terra ferma da un ponte (ingresso $ 10.00 a veicolo).

Island which is connected to the mainland by a bridge (admission $ 10.00 per vehicle). 

L'Ale non vede l'ora di vivere la sensazione descritta da Marco dopo l'esperienza nel Mar Morto, ma, nonostante sia strano il galleggiare nell'acqua non riuscendo ad andare a fondo, le condizioni sono completamente diverse: l'acqua è stagnante, ci sono milioni di moscerini a riva e non c'è un buon odore. Quindi, come si dice dalle nostre parti "toccata e fuga"... ma almeno abbiamo provato! 

Ale cannot really wait to experience the sensation described by Marco after he went to the Dead Sea, but, even if floating in the water is really weird, the conditions are completely different: the water is stagnant, there are millions of flies to the shore and there is not a good smell. So, as we say in our country "hit and run" ... but at least wehave done this experience! 

Poco meno di 50 miglia e arriviamo al nostro "nuovo" hotel, ma questa volta ci siamo trattati per benino: Sheraton 4 stelle! Per il prezzo che abbiamo trovato non potevamo non sceglierlo, più ecomonico dei vari motel che abbiamo trovato lungo la "Real America". Il receptionist è gentilissimo, e dopo averci dato la mappa della città ci spiega che ad un blocco dall'hotel c'è una fermata del treno che gratuitamente ti porta in centro! Qui è tutto molto curato, molto... "mormone".

The last 50 miles and finally we arrive at our "new" hotel, but this time a marvellous hotel: Sheraton, 4 stars! For the price that we found we could not have choosen better, cheaper than various motel that we found along the "Real America." The receptionist is friendly, and after giving us a map of the city tells us that at one block from the hotel there is a train stop that takes you into downtown for free.

Ovviamente in primis si va a visitare la Energy Solutions Arena che ospita le partite degli Utah Jazz e, dove all'esterno ci sono le statue di John Stockton (al quale hanno dedicato anche una via) e Karl Malone, i due "arcinemici" di Michael Jordan.

Obviously the first place we go is the Energy Solutions Arena, home of the Utah Jazz and, where outside there are the statues of John Stockton and Karl Malone, the two "enemies" of Michael Jordan. 

E' ora di cena e di fianco alla ESA c'è un centro commerciale, il "The Gateway Mall" che prendiamo immediatamente di mira. Guardiamo qualche vetrina e mangiamo un panino dall'immancabile subway. Ah, ovviamente si perde 40 minuti da Victoria's Secret!

It's time for dinner and next to the ESA there is a shopping mall, "The Gateway Mall" which we immediately targeted. Let's look at some window and eat a sandwich at subway. Well, of course we waste 40 minutes at Victoria's Secret! 

Decidiamo di tornare all'hotel a piedi, così da poter visitare la città di sera. SLC è piccolina, ma veramente carina e pulita (almeno nelle zone del centro).

We decide to walk back to the hotel, then we can explore the city in the evening. SLC is very small, but really nice and clean (at least in downtown). 

Tutto qui nasce e finisce con loro, con i Mormoni. Arriviamo al famoso tempio ben consci che... il registro non s'ha da firmare. Sappiamo. infatti, che se lo fai, nel giro di due settimane il Mormone che vive nella tua zona si presenterà a casa "convertirti".. .la tentazione di fare uno scherzo al papà di Marco è tanta! Ma poi chi lo sente?! Il tempio è maestoso, purtroppo non siamo potuti entrare perchè c'era una cerimonia in corso.

Everything here is connected with the Mormons. We arrive at the famous temple without signing the register! In fact, if you do this, within two weeks, the Mormon who lives in your area will be at home and try to "convert" you. The temple is magnificent, unfortunately we could not get in because there was a ceremony in progress. 

 

Passeggiamo ancora per le vie di SLC e attraversiamo un altro Mall! Ma quanti ce ne sono?! 

We hit again the streets of SLC and visit another Mall! But how many mall are there?!

Finalmente però riusciamo a provare una cheescake della famosa Cheescake Factory.

Finally, however, we can taste one of the famous cheesecakes by Cheescake Factory.
