Nw York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 17)

Siamo sempre più vicini alla conclusione del viaggio e, sarà per la stanchezza, sarà perchè finalmente  siamo in un hotel di qualità, ma non vogliamo davvero lasciare lo Sheraton. E con il check out a mezzogiorno, ci sono tutti gli ingredienti per restare un po' in piscina sotto il caldo sole dello Utah, ma prima dobbiamo mettere qualcosa sotto i denti e visto che la colazione in hotel è tutt'altro che economica usciamo a piedi alla ricerca di un bar. Cammina, cammina..ma caspita non c'è nulla di aperto! Eppure sono le 8.30! Ed ecco Marco che esclama: "E' vero! La domenica nello Utah è sacra, è tutto chiuso, la gente va in chiesa e basta! Pensa che non giocano neanche le partite dell'NBA di domenica!"..Optiamo quindi per il piccolissimo Starbucks che c'è nella hall dell'hotel!

We are getting closer to the end of the trip, and maybe because we are tired or because we finally are in a quality hotel, but we do not really want to leave the Sheraton Hotel. Check out is at noon, why don't we stay in the pool?? 
Before all, we need to have breakfast and not in the hotel because it is too much expensive, so we walk through the downtown looking for a bar. It's 8.30 am but everything is closed! Marco says: "uh oh..in Utah on Sunday people don't work! Also NBA doesn't play!". Fortunately there is a smallStarbucks in the reception of the hotel!

Il dovere però chiama, ci sono anche oggi piu di 300 chilometri da percorrere e da attraversare buona parte dello Utah con destinazione Moab, che per le prossime due notti ci ospiterà.

We have to go! There are more than 300km to do, crossing Utah with destination Moab, the town that will host us for the next two nights.

Il paesaggio che caratterizza lo Utah, soprattutto a sud, ormai lo conosciamo bene visti i lunghi trascorsi...

We well know the landscapes that characterizes Utah, especially in the south,..

Arriviamo a Moab intorno alle 16 e dopo aver fatto il check in nel nostro motel (son tutti cari, abbiam scelto il più "economico") siamo pronti per visitare le aree intorno alla città. Ovviamente l'attrazione principale è l'Arches National Park, ma avevamo già programmato di riservargli l'intera giornata di domani. Il tardo pomeriggio lo vorremmo invece dedicare a Canyonlands (è immenso, giusto una spruzzatina) e Dead Horse Point, dove abbiamo letto si gode di una splendida vista al tramonto.

We arrive in Moab around 4pm and after the check in at the motel (they are all quite expensive) we are ready to explore the areas around the town. Of course the main attraction is Arches National Park, but we had already planned to visit the park the day tomorrow. We would like to spend the late afternoon visiting Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point, where you can enjoy a beautiful view at sunset. 

I nostri piani vengono un pochino scombussolati quando scopriamo che si tratta di due cose differenti. Il Dead Horse Point non fa, infatti, parte di Canyonlands ma è uno State Park (10 dollari a vettura). E' tempo di scelte e, vista l'ora, optiamo per il solo Dead Horse...

Our plans are interrupted when we discover that they are two different parks. Dead Horse Point is a State Parl (10 dollar per vehicle). It's time to make a decision ande we choose to visit just the Dead Horse Point.

... anche perchè, a costo di far arrabbiare qualche purista, ma ricorda il Grand Canyon e quindi un qualcosa che, seppur bellissimo, è già stato visto in precedenza.

It reminds us to the beautiful Grand Canyon... something seen before in a previous trip.

Ecco, le cose sarebbero cambiate se avessimo avuto un 4x4 per poter attraversare la Potash Road all'interno del Canyon...

Well, if we had a 4x4 to cross the Potash Road inside the Canyon things would have been different.

o ancora aver detto "sì" ad una delle tante escursioni in jeep e non solo proposte dalle varie agenzie. Il problema è però che negli Stati Uniti, come abbiamo già ripetutamente detto, tutto quello che è "entertainment" si paga profumatamente (più di 100 dollari a persona)...

or maybe if we bought of the many excursions with jeeps sold in Moab. The problem is that in the United States if you want "entertainment" you have to pay (more than 100 dollars per person). 

Moab è la classica "città nel nulla" come le definiamo noi. C'è comunque tanta scelta a livello di cibo ed i negozietti caratteristici prima delle 10.30/11 non chiudono, dandovi la possibilità di riprendervi dalle fatiche e dal caldo che lì è davvero devastante. Il cibo? Quest'anno non è andata benissimo, niente o quasi locali di Man Vs Food, poche cene da ricordare, eccezion fatta per un paio di bistecche di bisonte e cervo. Ed è per questo che non ce la sentiamo di consigliarvi qualche ristorante in particolare... E' tutto, qui come nella zona di Yellowstone, un po' troppo turistico, non come in Texas e New Mexico dove davvero il nostro trip è stato anche e soprattutto culinario.

Moab is the classic town you find in Utah. However, there is so much choice in terms of food and little shops closed at 10:30 /11pm. So they give you the chance to recover from the fatigue and from the heat that is really strong. Food? This year we did not find unforgettable restaurants: no man vs food restaurants.... so, just a couple steaks (bison and deer) were very very good. This is the reason why we can not honestly recommend any restaurant in particular ... It was a touristic trip, not as in Texas and New Mexico where  our trip was also and especially culinary.
