Easter in Lyon (day 1, intro)

Se a Natale siamo in viaggio, figuriamoci a Pasqua e in un mese, quello di aprile, che ormai da anni per noi è sinonimo di viaggi. E anche se il tempo a disposizione non era molto la meta l'avevamo in mente già da parecchio tempo: facilmente raggiungibile in auto da Milano ed economica, il dito l'avevamo puntato sulla seconda città della Francia, Lione. Due giorni interi in quella che è anche la capitale transalpina del cibo ed uno nella caratteristica Annecy, preferita alla più grande Grenoble.

If we traveled during Christmas time, you can imagine what we have done during Easter time, especially in a month like april that means "travel" in our mind. Even if we had just couple of days, our goal was clear: we were looking for a place not far from Milan and economic, what's better than Lyon, south-east of France? Two full days in the french capital of food and one in the characteristic Annecy that has won the challenge against the largest Grenoble

475 chilometri ci separano da Lione e, a dirla tutta, molti dei nostri piani iniziali sono stati immediatamente disattesi. Ed è proprio da qui che partiamo con il nostro racconto, per sfatare immediatamente il mito del "vado a Lione in auto così risparmio". Con i passi alpini chiusi (Moncenisio su tutti, valida alternativa al costosissimo traforo del Frejus - 55 euro andata/ritorno, lo stesso per il Monte Bianco) ed il costo del tratto autostradale francese (25 euro per 130 chilometri) che porta a Lione siamo arrivati alla conclusione che "se fossimo andati in aereo sarebbe stato molto più conveniente". Anche perchè un incidente dentro il traforo del Frejus ci ha obbligati ad una lunga attesa (quasi due ore).

475 km separate us from Lyon and, to be honest, many of our initial plans have been immediately dismissed. We chose to travel with our car beacuse we wanted to save money but we were clearly wrong. Alpine passes were closed (Mont Cenis above all), Frejus Tunnel very expensive (55 euros, the same for Mont Blanc tunnel) and even the french highways were very expensive. Then at the Frejus tunnel we had to wait for almost two hours because of a car crash inside the tunnel. Definitely a bad idea, take the airplane would have been better!

Varchiamo il confine che è già tardi e per cena ci fermiamo a Chambery, dove approcciamo per la prima volta quella che è la cucina tipica del sud-est della Francia. Troppa qualità, a volte per noi anche troppo (foie gras, rognone...): ci fermiamo al Cafè du Lyon e l'Ale sceglie bene (stinco di agnello), meno bene Marco, perchè la tipica salsiccia della zona di Lione (anduillette) ha un gusto simile al cotechino, ma molto, molto forte.

It's already evening and we are still crossing the borderline. We have dinner in Chambery, one of the first french city, where we approach the typical cuisine of the south-east for the first time. Too sophisticated (foie gras, kidney...): we stop at Cafe du Lyon: lamb shank and very strong sausage (anduillette). That's the typical sausage of Lyon, it has a taste similar to pork sausage, but very, very strong and not so good.

Il day 1 diventa per forza di cose una presentazione del viaggio anche perchè, partiti alle 14.30, siamo arrivati a Lione in tarda sera. Ne approfittiamo allora per parlare anche dell'hotel che, a partire da questo racconto, diventerà una tappa fissa, cercando il più possibile di essere d'aiuto per chi come noi volesse intraprendere un viaggio ed è in cerca di una buona sistemazione a prezzi contenuti. Noi abbiamo scelto L'hotel Campanile, a sud della città, comodo perchè non lontano dalla metro (500. metri) e con il parcheggio gratuito. Nel complesso ci sentiamo di consigliarlo anche se lontano dal centro (quartiere di Oullins, non bellissimo la sera) e con la colazione non compresa. Tra i pregi il rapporto qualità-prezzo ed il ristorante a buffet economico (da 15 a 19 euro).

Day one becomes inevitably a kind of  presentation of the trip also because we arrived in Lyon very late in the evening. We take the opportunity then to talk about the hotel, trying as much as possible to be helpful for those who want to travel are looking for a good accommodation at reasonable prices in Lyon. We stayed at the Campanile, south of the city, convenient because not far from the subway(500 meters) and with free parking included. Overall we recommend it even if it's far from the city center (district of Oullins, not so beautiful in the evening) and with no free breakfast included. The main advantages are: good value and a nice buffet restaurant (15 to 19 euros).
