After so much Texas, it's finally time to visit a new state. We still are in the deep south but moving gradually to the east, along the gulf of Mexico, where the state of Louisiana is waiting for us. It's another land of myths, stories and legends, marshes and slaves, rural landscapes alternating at big cities. Louisiana, and there is no point in trying to conceal this, is tremendously fascinating even if, at least in summer, you will have to deal with heat and humidity that could not be find elsewhere in the United States. The last Texas city before crossing the border is Orange, then it will be...Louisiana. The same goes for Texas, here we are not in a state like any others...

E allora, per poterne cogliere ogni sfumatura, occorre partire da lontano, e quindi dalla "Louisiana purchase", l'acquisto da parte degli Stati Uniti dei territori della Louisiana, anzi, come direbbero i francesi Louisianà, con l'accento rigorosamente sulla "a" finale. E non li nominiamo per caso i francesi, qui i nostri "cugini" sono davvero di casa. La Louisiana è stata terra francese per moltissimi anni prima che gli americani mettessero a segno uno dei due più grandi furti legalizzati della storia americana. Il primo quando acquistarono l'Alaska dai russi (e scoprirono che era piena zeppa d'oro), il secondo quando per 11 milioni di dollari acquistarono proprio la Louisiana da Napoleone Bonaparte. Da sempre dunque lo stato è un mix di culture, in particolare quelle creole (nati dall'incrocio fra bianchi e neri, vennero in Louisiana prima del suo acquisto da parte degli Stati Uniti dall'Europa Occidentale e dal Golfo di Guinea) e cajun (coloni francesi residenti nel Canada atlantico, che, dopo la vittoria inglese nella guerra dei sette anni, si trasferirono dalle province del New Brunswick e della Nuova Scozia verso la Louisiana e, precisamente si stabilirono nella regione intorno a Lafayette e Houma).
So, if you wanna be able to follow every twist and turn, you've to start from afar, and therefore from the "Louisiana purchase", the purchase by the United States of the territories of Louisiana, which the french would call Louisianà, with the accent strictly onto the final "a". And we do not name the french randomly, those territories have been their home for a long time. Louisiana has been, in fact, a French land for many years before the Americans scored one of the two biggest clever scam of their history. The first when they bought Alaska from the Russians (and then they found out that it was full of gold), the second when (for $ 11 million) they bought Louisiana from Napoleon Bonaparte. It means that the state has always been a mix of cultures, in particular the Creoles (born from the crossing between white and black people: they came to Louisiana before the "Louisiana purchase" from Western Europe and the Gulf of Guinea) and cajun (French colonists residing in Atlantic Canada, who, after the English victory in the seven-year war, moved from the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to Louisiana and precisely settled in the region around Lafayette and Houma).

LAKE CHARLES, LA "PICCOLA LAS VEGAS"
La città regina del southwest della Louisiana è Lake Charles. Con oltre 75 festival che si tengono ogni anno, Lake Charles è considerata la Capitale dei Festival della Louisiana ed è considerata una piccola Las Vegas, complici anche i tanti resort/casinò tipici della città del peccato (su tutti il Golden Nugget). La sua chicca è sicuramente il Charpentier Historic District, che copre 40 blocchi della downtown ed è da tempo iscritto nel National Register of Historic Places. E’ un viaggio nel tempo il camminare in mezzo ad alcune delle più belle case in stile vittoriano della Lousiana, risalenti alla fine del 1800 ed i primi anni del ‘900. Ma Lake Charles, insieme alla vicina Sulphur, è anche considerata la porta d'ingresso per il Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, la grande attrazione di giornata.
CREOLE NATURE TRAIL - UNA DELLE 43 ALL AMERICAN ROAD
Se vi state chiedendo "cosa visitare" nel southwest della Lousiana la risposta è molto semplice. Una delle principali attrazioni è il Creole Nature Trail, un viaggio nelle paludi del Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, dove poter ammirare uccelli (è una delle "top 10 destination" negli Usa per il birdwatching), alligatori e tutto il resto della wildlife che caratterizza questa strada panoramica lunga 180 miglia, una delle 43 scenic byway designate a livello federale come "All American Road".
LAKE CHARLES, THE "LITTLE LAS VEGAS"
The queen city of southwest Louisiana is Lake Charles. With over 75 festivals held every year, Lake Charles is the Festival Capital of Louisiana and is considered a small Las Vegas, thanks to the many resorts / casinos which are typical of the sin city (for example the Golden Nugget resort). Its highlight is certainly the Charpentier Historic District, which covers 40 blocks of downtown and has been registered in the National Register of Historic Places. It is a journey through time walking among some of the most beautiful Louisiana's Victorian style houses dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. But Lake Charles, along with the nearby town of Sulfur, is also considered the gateway to the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, the main attraction of this stage.
CREOLE NATURE TRAIL - ONE OF THE 43 ALL AMERICAN ROAD
If you are wondering "what to visit" in the southwest of Louisiana, the answer is very simple. One of the main attraction is the Creole Nature Trail, a trip to the marshes of the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, where you can admire birds (it is one of the top 10 destinations in the USA for birdwatching), alligators and all the rest of the wildlife that characterize the 180 miles-scenic byway, one of the 43 federal-designated All American Road.

L'avventura lungo il Creole Nature Trail solitamente la si comincia al Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point (2740 Ruth St), dove display interattivi ti invitano a dare un'occhiata alla fauna selvatica che si trova nelle baie e nelle paludi e ti permettono di prendere confidenza con gli odori ed i deliziosi aromi delle cucine creole e cajun (di cui parleremo nel prossimo post). Orario di apertura: dal lunedì al venerdì dalle 8.30 alle 17, il sabato e la domenica dalle 8.30 alle 16.
The adventure along the Creole Nature Trail usually begins at the Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point (2740 Ruth St), where interactive displays invite you to take a look at the wildlife found in bays and marshes and allow you to get familiar with the smells and the delicious aromas of creole and cajun kitchens (we will discuss about them in the next post). Hours of operation: Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 8.30 am to 4 pm.
IL CREOLE NATURE TRAIL STEP BY STEP
Sulphur to Hackberry - 17.1 miles
E’ la zona più industriale del Creole Nature Trail. Prima di arrivare nella città petrolifera Hackberry attraverserete l’intercoastal Waterway (che collega Brownsville con lo stato del New Jersey!).
Hackberry to Holly Beach - 19.4 miles
Lasciata Hackberry si entra nel vivo, con l'accesso al Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. Qui, tra un alligatore e l'altro, si pesca il granchio. Un trail molto interessante è il Blue Goose Trail (1 miglio), che troverete poco prima del Sabine Business Office. Purtroppo dopo solo qualche centinaia di metri, noi abbiamo abbiamo dovuto desistere perchè assaliti dalle zanzare che, in Louisiana, specialmente in estate, possono davvero "rovinarvi" il viaggio. Cinque chilometri dopo un altro bel trail da non mancare è il Wetland Walkway (1.5 miglia), che conduce nel cuore della palude. Non è raro incontrare alligatori durante il percorso.
THE CREOLE NATURE TRAIL STEP BY STEP
Sulfur to Hackberry - 17.1 miles
It is the most industrial area along the Creole Nature Trail. Before getting to the town of Hackberry (an "Oil City") you will cross the intercoastal Waterway (which connects Brownsville with the state of New Jersey!).
Hackberry to Holly Beach - 19.4 miles
As soon as you leave Hackberry the best part of the Creole Nature Trail begins. This is the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, where the fishery for crab is very popular. A very nice trail is the Blue Goose Trail (1 mile), which is located just before the Sabine Business Office. Unfortunately, after only a few hundred meters hiked, we had to desist because of the mosquitoes that, in Louisiana, especially in summer, can really "ruin" the journey. Five kilometers after the Blue Goose Trail, there's another beautiful trail: the Wetland Walkway (1.5 miles), which leads into the heart of the swamp. It is not uncommon to meet alligators on the way.

Continuing south you'll reach the town of Holly Beach, 26 miles of beaches in the Gulf of Mexico. Here you come to fish, surf or picnic, but for us it is an opportunity to admire the raised houses typical of the beaches along Gulf, decisive when the many hurricanes destroy the coast of Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and east Texas.
Holly Beach to Cameron (10.6 miles) and Oak Grove (14 miles from Cameron)
Proseguendo verso est da Holly Beach, inizierai a percepire la grandezza dei giacimenti petroliferi della Louisiana. Ad un certo punto la strada s'interrompe e l'unico modo per raggiungere l'altra sponda del Calcasieu Ship Channel è tramite il Cameron Ferry (gratuito), sul quale noi abbiamo incontrato uno dei personaggi più strani di sempre. Uno sceriffo davvero molto simpatico che ricorderemo per la sua ormai famosa frase "chi vi ama? Gesù!". Un idolo. Giunti sull'altra sponda sarete nella piccola Cameron.
Holly Beach to Cameron (10.6 miles) and Oak Grove (14 miles from Cameron)
Continuing east coming from Holly Beach, you will start feeling the magnitude of the Louisiana oil fields. At one point the road ends and the only way to reach the other side of the Calcasieu Ship Channel is through the Cameron Ferry (free of charge), on which we met one of the strangest characters of all time. A very nice sheriff that we will remember for his now famous sentence "who loves you? Jesus!". An idol. Once on the other side you will be in the small town of Cameron.

Creole (north) to Lake Charles (36.6 miles)
Appena a nord di Oak Grove, raggiungerai la comunità di Creole. Tra Creole e il Conway LeBleu Memorial Bridge passerai attraverso acri di paludi incontaminate. Da qui, una possibile deviazione di 3 miglia lungo la sterrata Pintail Wildlife Drive vi porterà a stretto contatto con alligatori ed il resto della fauna del Creole Nature Trail. Il loop sul boardwalk di mezzo miglio all'interno del Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge & Visitor Center (1428 HWY 27), invece, regala belle viste sulla palude. In particolare durante il periodo della migrazione degli uccelli acquatici.
Creole (north) to Lake Charles (36.6 miles)
Just north of Oak Grove, there's the Creole community. Between Creole and the Conway LeBleu Memorial Bridge you will pass through acres of pristine marshes. A quick 3 miles-detour along a dirt road, the Pintail Wildlife Drive, will take you in close proximity with alligators and the rest of the wildlife of the Creole Nature Trail. The half-mile boardwalk loop inside the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge & Visitor Center (1428 HWY 27), on the other hand, offers beautiful views of the marsh. Especially during the migration of water birds.

Lacassine Spur: Holmwood (east) to the Lacassine “Pool,” 18.2 miles
L’ultima deviazione, se vorrete, è in direzione Bell City. E’ possibile allungare la strada di 4 miglia e raggiungere la Lacassine Pool lungo la Illinois Plant Road, situata all’interno del Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge. Questa palude d'acqua dolce è meglio conosciuta per i 16.000 acri di quella che tutti chiamano “the pool”, dove si può osservare la fauna selvatica e fare birdwatching. La "piscina "è aperta dal 15 marzo al 15 ottobre.

The last detour is in the direction of Bell City. It is possible stretch a bit the path (4-mile) and get to the Lacassine Pool along the Illinois Plant Road, located within the Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge. This freshwater swamp is best known for the 16,000 acres of what everyone calls "the pool", where wildlife can be observed and go birdwatching. The "pool" is open from the 15th of March till the 15th of October.

Eastern Spur: Oak Grove (east) to Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge 31.1 miles
E’ l’ultimo tratto, completamente ad est, che noi non abbiamo percorso. Farlo, tuttavia, significa scoprire la comunità di Grand Chenier e, poco più in la, anche il Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. La più alta densità di alligatori negli Usa la si trova qui, lungo la Lake Nature Drive, dove è molto in voga anche la pesca del granchio.
COME VISITARE LA BAYOU RUM COMPANY
Il Creole Nature Trail, invece, noi l'abbiamo concluso nella piccola Iowa dove, non senza faticare (causa mancato aiuto da parte del gps), abbiamo raggiunto il Bayou Rum Company. La storia di Iowa parte da lontano, dai coloni del Midwest provenienti da Kansas, Illinois e Iowa, dai canadesi francesi (Cajuns) sino ai pirati di Jean Lafitte che arrivarono qui percorrendo l'Old Spanish Trail, attratti dalla possibilità di coltivare riso, allevare il bestiame e, in seguito, anche dedicarsi all'attività petrolifera. Ma il fiore all'occhiello della città è il Bayou Rum Company, la più grande distilleria di rum privata degli Usa, il cui rum è esportato in tutto il mondo (anche in Italia).
Eastern Spur: Oak Grove (east) to Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge 31.1 miles
It is the last stretch, completely to the east, that we have not traveled. Do that, however, means discovering the community of Grand Chenier and, a little further, the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. The highest density of alligators in the USA is found here, along the Lake Nature Drive where crab fishing is very popular.
HOW TO VISIT THE BAYOU RUM COMPANY
We ended the Nature Creole Trail trip in the small town of Iowa, where (with great difficulty due to lack of help from the gps), we reached the Bayou Rum Company. The story of Iowa starts from afar, from the Midwest settlers coming from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, from the French Canadians (Cajuns) up to the pirates of Jean Lafitte who arrived here along the Old Spanish Trail, attracted by the possibility to grow rice, rise the livestock and, later, also dedicate themselves to the oil business. But the pride of the city is the Bayou Rum Company, the largest private rum distillery in the US, whose rum is exported all over the world.
Il Rum Bayou viene distillato dalla canna da zucchero coltivata localmente nel sud della Louisiana: la loro "ricetta dello zucchero" consiste nell'utilizzare una miscela di canna da zucchero e melassa della Louisiana naturale al 100%, e quindi non raffinata. Ogni lotto di Rum Bayou è distillato in rame e imbottigliato a mano. La distilleria (aperta dal martedì al sabato) offre tour gratuiti e degustazioni, oltre ad un un grande negozio di souvenir.
Bayou Rum is craft distilled from locally grown sugarcane in Lacassine: their signature ‘sugarhouse’ recipe uses a blend of 100% natural, unrefined Louisiana sugarcane and molasses. Every batch of Bayou Rum is distilled in copper pots and bottled by hand. The Distillery & Visitor Center is open seven days a week from 9:00am to 5:00pm and offers free guided tours and tasting.
I tour (gratuiti) vengono effettuati ogni ora dalle ore 10 alle 4 e ad accompagnarvi all'interno della fabbrica sarà una preparatissima (e simpaticissima) guida che vi spiegherà ogni segreto del Bayou Rum Company. In conclusione, ovviamente, vi verrà offerto anche un taste di cinque rum. Onestamente uno più buono dell'altro. Un'esperienza davvero da non perdere...
Distillery tours (free of charge) are offered seven days a week at 10:00 am 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 4:00 pm: a very well prepared guide will accompany you into the factory and explain every secret of the Bayou Rum Company. At the end of the tour, of course, there will be a taste of five rums. Honestly one more beautiful than the other. It will definitely be worth experiencing.
