The third and final day of exploration of Palm Springs and its surroundings leads us to one of the most underrated National Park by tourists, but undoubtedly also one of the most fascinating of all the North American continent, the Joshua Tree National Park. A park that, since our first visit in 2016, it has always been in our hearts. The main thing to do when visiting Palm Springs is definitely enjoy the incredible Joshua Tree National Park

I MIGLIORI TRAIL DEL JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK
Vogliamo raccontarvi dei tre trail più belli del Joshua Tree National Park, tre escursioni non difficili che permetteranno ai visitatori di cogliere le più belle sfumature di un parco molto più sorprendente di quanto possiate immaginare. Ma prima di avventurarvi nel parco, fermatevi nel carinissimo Joshua Tree Store, situato accanto al visitor center dell'entrata nord-ovest del parco, nella città di Joshua Tree.
We want to tell you about the three most beautiful trails in Joshua Tree National Park, three easy walks that will allow visitors to capture the most beautiful shades of a park that is much more wondrous than you can fathom. Well, but before venturing into the park, stop and visit the nice Joshua Tree Store, located next to the visitor center at the north-west entrance to the park, in the town of Joshua Tree.
1) HIDDEN VALLEY NATURE TRAIL

In quello che una volta fu un leggendario nascondiglio per bovini si snoda uno dei trail più famosi del Joshua Tree National Park, l'Hidden Valley Nature Trail. Situato a nord ovest del parco, in un'area famosa anche per l'arrampicata su roccia, l'Hidden Valley Nature Trail riunisce in un solo trail piante ed animali che non è possibile trovare insieme in altre sezioni del Parco.
1) HIDDEN VALLEY NATURE TRAIL
LENGTH: 1 mileDIFFICULTY: easy
In what was once a legendary hideout for cattle runs one of the most famous trails in Joshua Tree National Park, the Hidden Valley Nature Trail. Located in the north west of the park, in an area also famous for rock climbing, the Hidden Valley Nature Trail combines in a single trail plants and animals trail that cannot be found together in other sections of the Park.
A dominare il percorso saranno sia Joshua Tree, che dà il nome al parco, il pinyon ed il ginepro che condividono lo spazio con mesquite, yucca, nolina e vari cactus. L'attacco del sentiero si trova ad una quindicina di minuti di auto dall'entrata ovest del parco e dal centro visitatori (l'area di parcheggio è "Hidden Valley").
Along the trail you'll see both Joshua Tree, which gives its name to the park, pinyon and juniper that share the space with mesquite, yucca, nolina and various cacti. The beginning of the trail is located about fifteen minute drive from the park's west entrance and visitor center (the parking area is "Hidden Valley").
L'AFFASCINANTE STORIA DELLA HIDDEN VALLEY
Anno 1936, il pioniere Bill Keys, deciso a migliorare l'accesso all'area per le sue mandrie di bestiamo fa saltare con la dinamite una buonissima parte delle pareti della Hidden Valley. Proprio l'esplosione creò il varco che ancora oggi i turisti provenienti da tutto il mondo utilizzano per visitare una valle che la naturalista Peggy Larson non esitò a definire il mosaico dei mondi in miniatura, una frase che potrete notare scritta anche all'inizio del sentiero.
THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF HIDDEN VALLEY
Year 1936, the pioneer Bill Keys, determined to improve access to the area for his herd of cattle, dynamited a very good part of the walls of the Hidden Valley with. Just the explosion created the breach that tourists from all over the world still use to visit a valley that the naturalist Peggy Larson did not hesitate to call it a mosaic of miniature worlds”, a phrase that you will notice written even at the beginning of the trail.
The trail, which is 1.2 miles long, begins in a path bordered by two large rock walls leading up to the real valley surrounded by incredible rock formations that only Joshua Tree National Park can offer.
2) BARKER DAM TRAIL

A nostro modesto parere il più bel percorso escursionistico che offre il Joshua Tree National Park. Il Barker Dam Trail, di certo non secondo in termini di popolarità rispetto all'Hidden Valley Nature Trail, è indubbiamente uno di quei sentieri che meglio spiega la forza della natura.
2) BARKER DAM TRAIL

In our humble opinion the most beautiful hiking trail in the Joshua Tree National Park. The Barker Dam Trail is certainly as popular as the Hidden Valley Nature Trail and undoubtedly one of those trails that best explains the nature's majesty.
Perchè, che ci crediate o meno, in uno dei luoghi più caldi della California, c'è un laghetto permanente, di fatto la ciliegina sulla torta di un trail che difficilmente vi deluderà.
Because, believe it or not, in one of California's hottest places, there is a permanent pond, the icing on the cake of a trail that will hardly disappoint you.
Se state provenendo dall'Hidden Valley Nature Trail, percorrete pochissime centinaia di metri con la vostra auto ed imboccate la Barker Dam Road sino all'omonimo parcheggio.
If you are coming from the Hidden Valley Nature Trail, follow the Barker Dam Road till reaching the parking lot.
Da qui partono due trail, entrambi ben segnalati: il primo è il Barker Dam (nord -ovest), l'altro è il Wall Street Mill trail, che vi condurrà a quello che un tempo era un vecchio mulino. I quasi 3 km del loop del Barker Dam Trail è probabilmente il meglio che il Joshua Tree National Park può offrire a livello escursionistico (almeno tra i percorsi considerati "facili"), con cumuli di massi uno più bello dell'altro che lasceranno spazio ad un piccolo lago blu, creando uno splendido contrasto con il paesaggio circostante.
There are two trails that start right here, both well marked: the first one is the Barker Dam (north-west), the other is the Wall Street Mill trail, which will lead you to an old mill. The nearly 3 km loop of the Barker Dam Trail is probably the best trail that the Joshua Tree National Park can offer (at least among the "easy" trails), with piles of boulders one more beautiful than the other that will suddenly leave room for a small blue lake, creating a splendid contrast with the surrounding landscape.
Le foto più belle della vostra avventura nel parco nazionale dei Joshua le scatterete probabilmente qui, ma dovrete essere fortunati perchè durante la stagione secca potreste anche trovarlo prosciugato. Una volta raggiunto il piccolo lago ed ammirato il paesaggio, potrete tornare al punto di partenza a ritroso oppure proseguire nel loop che vi ricondurrà ad un'ambientazione desertica sino all'area di parcheggio.
The best photos of your adventure in the Joshua National Park will probably be taken here, but you will have to be lucky because during the dry season you might even find it drained. Once you reach the small lake, you can return to the starting point along the same path or continue the loop trail that will lead you back to a desert setting up to the parking area.
Prima di arrivarci troverete un bivio: mantenendo la sinistra arriverete al punto di partenza del Barker Dam Trail, a destra invece parte l'Echo Tree Trail. Poco male se doveste seguirlo, una volta raggiunta la strada asfaltata Barker Dam Road, svoltate a sinistra e seguitela per cinquecento metri sino all'area di parcheggio dove avrete lasciato la vostra auto.
Before you get there you will see a fork: just keep the left if you want to get to beginning of the Barker Dam Trail and to the parking lot. If you keep the right you'll follow the Echo Tree Trail. Never mind if you follow it, once you get to the Barker Dam Road, turn left and follow it for 0.4 miles till reaching the parking area where you left your car.
3) ARCH ROCK TRAIL
LUNGHEZZA: 0.3 migliaDIFFICOLTA': Facile
E' vero che Skull Rock ed il suo Skull Rock Nature Trail rimane una delle grandi attrazioni del parco (ne abbiamo parlato nell'altro post dedicato al Joshua Tree National Park), ma... gli archi son sempre gli archi ed è impossibile non subirne il fascino. Per questo il terzo trail che ci consentiamo di consigliare (anche perchè Skull Rock è ampiamente visibile dalla strada senza per forza di cose percorrere il trail) è l'Arch Rock Trail.
3) ARCH ROCK TRAIL
LENGTH: 0.3 milesDIFFICULTY: Easy
It is true that Skull Rock and its Skull Rock Nature Trail remains one of the park's highlights (we talked about it in the other post dedicated to Joshua Tree National Park), but ... arches are always arches and it's impossible not to visit the Joshua Tree National Park most famous arch. This is why the third trail that we recommend (also because Skull Rock is widely visible from the road without necessarily hiking the trail) is the Arch Rock Trail.
Il trail è brevissimo e per raggiungerlo dovrete percorrere un breve tratto del versante sud della strada a "y" che taglia il parco, la Pinto Basin Road, e poi svoltare a sinistra lungo la White Tank Campground Road. Da qui parte il brevissimo trail di 500 metri che conduce ad Arch Rock.
The trail is very short. You will have to take a short stretch of the south side of the "y" road that cuts through the park, the Pinto Basin Road, and then turn left along the White Tank Campground Road to reach the parking lot. From here the 0.3 miles trail leads to Arch Rock.
Non sarà famoso come quello di Arches National Park, ma anche Joshua Tree ha il suo Arch Rock. Il trail è molto semplice, la grande difficoltà sarà trovare un parcheggio libero...

VISITARE PIOONERTOWN, UN SET CINEMATOGRAFICO DEL VECCHIO WEST
Ogni visita al Joshua Tree National Park che si rispetti non può prescindere da una breve sosta a Pioneertown, una deviazione di circa 10 km dalla strada principale che conduce a Yucca Valley, una delle gate town del parco nazionale insieme a Joshua Tree e Twentynine Palms. Imboccate la Pioneertown road che s'inerpica tra le montagne sino a raggiungere la pittoresca cittadina che fu fondata nel 1946 da un gruppo di investitori di Hollywood (tra cui gli attori Roy Rogers e Gene Autry) e per anni fu un set cinematografico per i film western.
VISIT PIOONERTOWN, A OLD WEST CINEMATOGRAPHIC SET
Any self-respecting visit to the amazing Joshua Tree National Park certainly requires a stop in the iconic town of Pioneertown, a detour of about 8 miles from the main road leading to Yucca Valley, one of the national park's gate towns along with Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. Take the Pioneertown road that climbs up into the mountains until you reach the picturesque town that was founded in 1946 by a group of Hollywood investors (including actors Roy Rogers and Gene Autry) and for years was a set for western movies.
LA STORIA DI PIONEERTOWN
L'idea era quella di creare un set in stile "Old West" che avesse la doppia funzione di set cinematografico e città vera e propria, visitabile anche dai turisti. Gli esterni dunque erano repliche fedeli di edifici degli anni '80 del diciannovesimo secolo: c'erano dunque stalle, prigioni, banche, gli immancabili saloon che all'interno poi erano pronte ad ospitare gelaterie, motel, etc. L'idea fu vincente.
THE HISTORY OF PIONEERTOWN
The original idea was to create an "Old West" style set that would have had a double function: a movie set but also a real town, which could also be visited by tourists. The exteriors were therefore faithful replicas of buildings dated back to the 80s of the nineteenth century: there were stables, prisons, banks, the inevitable saloons that housed ice-cream shops, motels, etc. That was a winning idea.
A cavallo tra gli anni '40 e '50 del secolo scorso furono girate più di 50 pellicole a Pioneertown. Ora sono pochi i film a passare da queste parti, ma non per questo Pioneertown ha perso il suo fascino. La via principale è Mane Street, il locale più vivace è tuttavia il Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace dove ogni giorno si suona musica dal vivo.
In the late '40s, early '50s of the last century more than 50 movies were shot in Pioneertown. Nowadays just few movies are shot here, but Pioneertown has not lost its charm. The main street is Mane Street, but the most lively place is Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace where live music is played every day.
