Com'era quella storia che l'Islanda regala una bellezza via l'altra? Ecco, se anche la tappa odierna, che sulla carta durante lo studio ci era sembrata "normale", si è rivelata esser incredibilmente bella, vuol proprio dire questo clamoroso paese è un qualcosa di incredibile a livello naturale. E' la giornata dei ghiacciai, dei canyon e delle immancabili cascate, ma anche di un bellissimo cafè scoperto per caso e della prima notte passata davvero nel nulla, in una fattoria, lontanissimi dalla civiltà. Lasciata Reykjavik da ormai un paio di giorni, stiamo scoprendo un'Islanda completamente diversa...
What was that story about Iceland giving one beauty over another? Here, even if today's stage, which seemed to be just "normal" while studying, turned out to be incredibly beautiful... wellm it means that this sensational country is something incredible at a natural level. It is the day of glaciers, canyons and the inevitable waterfalls, but also of a beautiful cafe discovered by chance and above all of the first night really spent in nowhere, on a farm, very far from civilization. We are discovering a completely different Iceland...

L'avvio di giornata è soft, perchè il clou è situato quasi tutto nella parte centrale della tappa. E allora abbiamo tempo per fermarci alla Hjörleifshöfði, una grotta decisamente particolare (conosciuta anche come Yoda), diventata famosa da quando qui furono girate scene del film Star Wars Rogue. La grotta di Hjorleifshofdi è sostanzialmente una roccia gigante di 221 metri che si creò durante diverse eruzioni vulcaniche nell'era glaciale. La troverete deviando sulla destra 14 km circa dopo aver lasciato Vik, ovviamente in direzione Hofn.
The beginning of the day is soft, because the highlights are almost all located in the central part of the stage. And then we have enough time to stop at the Hjörleifshöfði, a very particular cave (also known as Yoda), which became famous since scenes from the movie Star Wars Rogue were shot here. Hjorleifshofdi Cave is basically a 221-meter giant rock that was created during several volcanic eruptions in the Ice Age. You will find it by turning right about 14 km after leaving Vik, obviously in the direction of Hofn.

Poco lontano dalla grotta, si aprirà davanti a voi uno stranissimo campo di lava. Il suo nome è Laufskálavarða, una cresta lavica, circondata da tumuli di pietra, nel deserto Myrdalssandur. La curiosità sono le tante pietre posizionate per formare un tumulo, rimasuglio di un passato lontano durante il quale i primi viaggiatori che attraversavano il deserto decisero di accumularle come segnale di buon auspicio per il prosieguo del loro viaggio. Dalla cima della collinetta si apre un'ampissima veduta sul deserto e sui cumuli, regalandovi un interessante scatto fotografico.
Not far from the cave, a strange lava field opens in front of you. Its name is Laufskálavarða, a lava ridge surrounded by stone mounds in the Myrdalssandur desert. The curiosity are the many stones positioned to form a mound, a remnant of a distant past during which the first travelers who crossed the desert decided to accumulate them as a good omen for the continuation of their journey. From the top of the hill there is a very wide view of the desert and the mounds, giving you an interesting photographic shot.

FJADRARGLJUFUR CANYON, UN GIOIELLINO NASCOSTO
Poco prima di raggiungere la piccola cittadina di Kirkjubæjarklaustur, ovvero il primo baluardo di civiltà dopo aver lasciato Vik, una deviazione sulla sinistra vi condurrà ad un canyon poco famoso ma non meno affascinante di quelli rinomati, Fjaðrárgljúfur. Profondo 100 metri e lungo circa 2 km, al suo interno vede scorrere il fiume Fjadrà e la sua caratteristica è quella di possedere pareti a strapiombo e di essere stretto e tortuoso.
FJADRARGLJUFUR CANYON, A HIDDEN JEWEL
Just before reaching the small town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, which is the first bastion of civilization after Vik, a quick detour to the left leads visitors to a little-known canyon but no less fascinating than the renowned ones, Fjaðrárgljúfur. It is 100 meters deep and about 2 km long, and it was created by the Fjadrà river: its main characteristic is that it has sheer walls and it's also narrow and tortuous.

Il sentiero che si snoda ai bordi del canyon consente con una passeggiata di 30-40 minuti (andata e ritorno) di raggiungere il view point posizionato al termine del trail, dal quale ammirare anche una piccola cascata oltre ovviamente al bellissimo canyon.
The path that winds along the edge of the canyon allows with a walk of 30-40 minutes (round trip) to reach the view point located at the end of the trail, from which you can also admire a small waterfall as well as the beautiful canyon.

Una volta lasciata l'auto nel parcheggio (piuttosto grande), potrete scegliere se seguire il percorso che segue i bordi del canyon oppure scendere verso il fiume: come al solito, quando si parla di Islanda, le possibilità di trekking sono infinite...
Once you leave the car in the parking lot which is pretty large, you can choose whether to follow the path that follows the edges of the canyon or go down towards the river: as usual, when it comes to Iceland, the possibilities for trekking are endless ...

Se a sud-est di Kirkjubæjarklaustur la grande attrazione è il canyon, a nord-ovest invece, a ridosso di un campo da golf e di un'area di campeggio, potrete ammirare le Stjórnarfoss, che come Fjaðrárgljúfur sono piuttosto nascoste e poco visitate ma decisamente fotogeniche. Lasciate l'auto nell'ampio parcheggio del camping Kleifar situato lungo la Road Nr. 203, strada Geirland ed attraversate la strada: vi troverete davanti alla cascata stessa, che di fatto si divide in due cascate alte 15 metri. Quella superiore vive all'ombra di quella inferiore poiché è visibile solo da una certa distanza. Quello inferiore è invece piuttosto spettacolare. Siamo all'inizio del parco nazionale del Vtnajokull (che comprende anche tutti i luoghi di cui vi parleremo nel prosieguo del post), sito unesco dal 2019, e scompare ogni traccia di civiltà.
If to the south-east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur the main attraction is the canyon, to the north-west instead, behind a golf course and a camping area, visitors can admire the Stjórnarfoss, which like Fjaðrárgljúfur are rather hidden and little visited but definitely photogenic. Leave your car in the large car park of the Kleifar campsite located along Road Nr. 203, Geirland road, and cross the road: the waterfall are just right there. Stjornafoss are actually divides into two 15 meters high waterfalls. The upper one lives in the shadow of the lower one since it is only visible from a certain distance. The lower one is rather spectacular. We are at the beginning of the Vtnajokull national park (which also includes all the places we will talk about later in the post), a unesco site since 2019, and all traces of civilization disappear...

LO SCONTRINO SPECIALE AL BELLISSIMO HAMRAFOSS CAFE
L'idea era quella di visitare le cascate Foss a Sidu, ma la verità è che più che le cascate a meritare una visita è il bellissimo Hamrafoss Cafe, situato dall'altra parte della strada rispetto alle cascate, circa 10 km dopo aver lasciato le Stjornafoss. Gestito dalla signora Eyrún, il cafè assomiglia tantissimo... alla casa della nonna ed è uno di quei posti dal quale non vorresti più andartene.
THE SPECIAL RECEIPT AT THE BEAUTIFUL HAMRAFOSS CAFE
The idea was to visit the Foss a Sidu waterfalls, but the truth is that more than the falls, the beautiful Hamrafoss Cafe is worth a visit. It's located across the road from the falls, about 10km after leaving the Stjornafoss. Run by Mrs Eyrún, the cafe looks a lot like ... grandma's house and it's one of those places you never want to leave.

Il menù è semplice, caffè (tanto caffè), una zuppa del giorno (sempre diversa e sempre buonissima) e molte torte fatte in casa, una più buona dell'altra. E poi lo scontrino, stupendo, che altro non era che la scritta a penna del prezzo su un post-it. Diteci voi se non sembra di essere dalla nonna?
The menu is simple: coffee (lots of coffee), a soup of the day (always different and always delicious) and many homemade cakes, one better than the other. Ah le cascate, perchè alla fine ci eravamo fermati per quelle. Foss A Sidù è in realtà una fattoria, menzionata addirittura nel "Libro degli insediamenti islandesi" e quindi presente sul territorio sin dal IX secolo. Noi abbiamo trovato l'accesso alla cascata sbarrato in quanto situata su una proprietà privata (Foss a Sidu, appunto), ma abbiamo letto in internet che le scogliere sono accessibili tramite un ripido sentiero vicino alla cascata e che ne vale davvero la pena camminare fin là in alto...
Well, the falls... eventually, we decided to stop right there because of them. Foss A Sidù is actually a farm, even mentioned in the "Book of Icelandic settlements" and therefore present on the territory since the 9th century. We found the access to the waterfall barred as it is located on a private property (Foss a Sidu, in fact), but we've read on the internet that the cliffs are accessible via a steep path near the waterfall and that it is really worth the walk up there ...

CASCATE E GHIACCIAI. LO SVARTIFOSS TRAIL E... MOLTO ALTRO
Siamo ormai nel cuore del Parco nazionale Skaftafell, il regno dei ghiacciai. Prima però c'è ancora un appuntamento con una cascata, questa volta davvero imperdibile, a due passi dal Skaftafell Visitor Center (dove è presente anche un cafe), lungo la 998. Dopo circa 150 km di nulla, sia a livello di civiltà ma anche di turisti, l'atmosfera cambia in un amen: tra campeggiatori, hikers e semplici visitatori, l'area delle Svartifoss trail che consente anche l'accesso al ghiacciaio Svínafellsjökull è davvero affollata ma altrettanto splendida.
WATERFALLS AND GLACIERS. THE SVARTIFOSS TRAIL AND... MUCH MORE
We are now in the heart of the Skaftafell National Park, the kingdom of glaciers. First, however, there is still an appointment with a waterfall, but this time it's really unmissable, a few steps from the Skaftafell Visitor Center (where there is also a cafe), along the road 998. After about 150 km of nothing, both in terms of civilization and tourists, the atmosphere changes in an instant: between campers, hikers and visitors, the Svartifoss trail area that also allows access to the Svínafellsjökull glacier is really crowded but just as beautiful.

Dal visitor center parte il sentiero che conduce alle Svartifoss (la "cascata nera"), una delle cascate più famose ed eleganti d'Islanda, grazie al suo salto di 20 metri da una scogliera a forma di mezzaluna, composta da colonne di basalto nero.
Starting from the visitor center, the trail leads to the Svartifoss (the "black waterfall"), one of the most famous and elegant waterfalls of Iceland, thanks to the 20 meters jump from a crescent-shaped cliff, composed of columns of black basalt.

Sono le acque del vicino ghiacciao Svínafellsjökull ad alimentare le cascate che si trovano in un'area verde dove crescono betulle e sorbi e dove la fauna è abbondante grazie alle volpi artiche, topi, visoni, corvi e altri uccelli. Il sentiero, un loop di 5.5 km che conduce alle cascate è ben segnalato e comincia proprio a ridosso del visitor center.
It is the waters of the nearby Svínafellsjökull glacier that feed the falls, which are located in a green area where birch and rowan trees grow and where wildlife is abundant: there are arctic foxes, mice, mink, crows and other birds. The trail, a 5.5 km loop that leads to the falls, is well marked and begins right next to the visitor center.

I primi 250 metri attraversano il campeggio ma il sentiero poi vira a destra e sale. Salendo incrocerete prima la "cascata dei vichinghi" e poi il punto panoramico Sjonarsker ed infine le Svartifoss. Una volta raggiunta la cascata potrai tornare dal sentiero dal quale sei arrivato o attraversare il ponte in legno situato a ridosso delle cascate stesse. Il sentiero diventerà un loop di 5.5 km e se seguirete le indicazioni per Sel riuscirete anche ad ammirare le vecchie case di torba.
The first 250 meters of the trail cross the campsite but the path then turns right and goes uphill. Going uphill visitors will cross first the "Viking waterfall" and then the panoramic point called Sjonarsker and finally the Svartifoss waterfall. Once you reach the waterfall you can return from the same path or cross the wooden bridge located near the Svartifoss. The path will become a 5.5 km loop and if you follow the signs to "Sel", you can't miss the old peat houses.

Una volta tornati al visitor center, un altro trail di 3.7 km (andata e ritorno) conduce invece al ghiacciaio Skaftafellsjökull. E' il meno affascinante dei tre ghiacciati che vedrete in successione, per questo consigliamo di visitarlo solo se state provenendo da Vik e state viaggiando in direzione Hofn.
Once back at the visitor center, there's another 3.7 km trail (round trip) that leads to the Skaftafellsjökull glacier. It is the least fascinating of the three glaciers that you're about to see in succession, so we recommend visiting it only if you are coming from Vik and are traveling in the direction of Hofn.

JOKULSARLON E VATNAJOKULL, L'OLIMPO DEI GHIACCIAI
L La musica cambia qualche chilometro più in la, avvicinandosi notevolmente al mare. Uno via l'altro affronterete prima Fjallsárlón e poi Jokulsarlon, due famosissimi ghiacciai islandesi, anche e soprattutto per il fatto che sono davvero lì a portata di mano, senza fare troppa fatica. Qui vengono effettuati escursioni a piedi nel cuore del ghiacciaio e gite in barca che conducono il turista a strettissimo contatto con gli iceberg...ecco, qui c'è davvero la possibilità di spendere un'intera giornata ammirando una delle più famose bellezze naturali islandesi.
JOKULSARLON AND VATNAJOKULL, THE OLYMPUS OF GLACIERS
The music changes a few kilometers further on, as you approach the sea. One by one, visitors will first face Fjallsárlón and then Jokulsarlon, two famous Icelandic glaciers, also and above all for the fact that they are really at your fingertips, without putting in some considerable effort. Here you can take a tour into the heart of the glacier (by foot) or take part on a boat trip that bring the tourist in close contact with the icebergs... well, there is really the possibility to spend an entire day admiring one of the most famous natural beauties of Iceland.

N Noi abbiamo preferito ammirarlo dai view point posizionati sul lago Fjallsárlón, dove brevissimi sentieri conducono direttamente lago stesso. Essendo più piccolo del suo vicino, meno conosciuto, quindi meno affollato, non mancano gli iceberg che spuntano dall'acqua, rendendolo un luogo davvero magico.
We preferred to admire it from the view points located on the lake Fjallsárlón, where short paths lead directly to the lake. Being smaller than its neighbor, less known, therefore less crowded, there is no shortage of icebergs emerging from the water, making it a truly magical place.
Come altrettanto magico è il vicino Jokulsarlon, che possiamo definire come il "Wimbledon dei ghiacciai". Jökulsárlón è una laguna di origine glaciale che costeggia il Parco nazionale del Vatnajökull, dove gli iceberg sono ancora più visibili. Ah, tranquilli, non potrete non notarlo perchè è situato subito dopo il ponte poco dopo aver lasciato Fjallsarlon. E, se anche foste distratti, sarà la quantità enorme di visitatori (e auto) a ricordarvi che siete in uno dei luoghi più famosi d'Islanda.
Just as magical is the nearby Jokulsarlon, which we can define as the "Wimbledon of glaciers". Jökulsárlón is a lagoon of glacial origin that runs along the Vatnajökull National Park, where the icebergs are even more visible. Well, don't worry, you just cannot miss it because it's located just after the bridge shortly after leaving Fjallsarlon. And, even if you are distracted, it will be the huge amount of visitors (and cars) to remind you that you are in one of the most famous places in Iceland.

Gli iceberg che si staccano dal ghiacciaio e finiscono nella laguna, si sciolgono lentamente e confluiscono nell'oceano. Qui vengono levigati dalle onde prima di essere riportati a riva sulla nerissima spiaggia Breidamerkursandur, meglio conosciuta come Diamond Beach. Gli iceberg che riempiono la spiaggia, fanno da netto contrasto con il nero della sabbia vulcanica, rendendola una delle aree più fotogeniche del sud del paese. Anche gli appassionati di fauna selvatica frequentano il sito come molte foche che chiamano la spiaggia casa, ed è uno dei posti migliori del paese per vedere le orche dalla riva.
The icebergs that break off from the glacier and end up in the lagoon, slowly melt and flow into the ocean. Here they are smoothed by the waves before being washed ashore on the black Breidamerkursandur beach, better known as Diamond Beach. The icebergs that fill the beach make a stark contrast to the black volcanic sand, making it one of the most photogenic areas in the south of the country. Wildlife enthusiasts also frequent the site as many seals that call the beach home, and it's one of the best places in the country to see killer whales from the shore.

BREKKA I LONI FARM STAY, UN GIOIELLINO A 30 KM DA HOFN
Hofn è la città di riferimento quando si proviene da Vik e si visita l'area dei ghiacciai. I prezzi degli hotel però sono abbastanza altini ed è per questo che abbiamo deciso di proseguire per altri 30 km e pernottare in un gioiellino chiamato Brekka í Lóní Farm Stay. Se siete alla ricerca di un'area viva questo non è il posto che fa per voi (non ci sono ristoranti, benzinati, cafe... niente di niente e dovrete arrangiarvi anche per la cena), ma se invece come noi siete alla ricerca di un posto caratteristico, con una padrona di casa fantastica, con una vista incredibile e gli animali a farvi compagnia (gattini, cavalli...), beh... questo è davvero un B&B da non perdere.

BREKKA I LONI FARM STAY, A LITTLE GEM 30 KM FROM HOFN
Hofn is the reference town for visitors coming from Vik and from the area of the glaciers. However, the hotel prices are quite high and that's why we decided to continue for another 30 km and spend the night in a little gem called Brekka i Loni Farm Stay. If you're looking for a lively area, this is not the place for you (there are no restaurants, no gas stations, no cafes... nothing at al!), but if, like us, you're looking for a quaint place, with a fantastic landlady, an incredible view and animals that keep you company (kittens, horses...), well... this is really a B&B not to be missed.
