"Route 66. Solo il nome è magia". Scriveva così Michael Wallis, storico giornalista-scrittore che più di ogni altro ha saputo raccontare storie e vicissitudini di quella che gli americani chiamano "The Mother Road". Quella magia che ha inevitabilmente contagiato anche me, non una ma ben due volte, perchè il richiamo della "strada più famosa al mondo" è un qualcosa a cui è davvero difficile resistere. La prima nel 2016, la seconda nel 2025, nove anni dopo, proprio nell'anno in cui la Route 66 compie 99 anni. Tante cose sono cambiate da quella prima volta in cui ho percorso la prima storica strada asfaltata capace di collegare l'est con l'ovest, nella mia vita come lungo i suoi 3940 km. Non avrei mai immaginato, quasi 10 anni fa, di ritrovarmi ripercorrerla nuovamente e con un'altra persona al mio fianco, Roberta, che al suo primo "road trip" non ha avuto alcun dubbio su quale avrebbe dovuto essere la meta. "Portami sulla Route 66, fammi scoprire l'America più vera" mi ha detto poco meno di un anno fa, un viaggio che non sapevo avrebbe segnato profondamente entrambi. Perchè, e parlo per me, nonostante i 24 viaggi negli Stati Uniti, non avevo ancora realizzato che la Route 66 è molto più simile al percorso della propria vita più di quanto si possa pensare. Già, perchè ti obbliga a fermarti e goderti il viaggio, senza pensare alla meta finale (Los Angeles e l'oceano), ad accettarne l'imprevedibilità ed a trovare una soluzione quando le cose non vanno come te le eri immaginate. E per uno come me abituato a guardare sempre avanti non è stato facile da accettare.
“Route 66. The first time was in 2016, the second in 2025, nine years later, the very year that Route 66 turns 99. Many things have changed since that first time I traveled the first historic paved road connecting the east with the west, both in my life and along its 3,940 km. Almost 10 years ago, I couldn't have imagined that I would be traveling it again with another person by my side, Roberta, who had no doubt about where her first road trip would take her. “Take me on Route 66, let me discover the real America,” she said to me just under a year ago: at that time i didn't know that this experience would have marked both of us. Because, speaking for myself, despite 24 trips to the United States, I still hadn't realized that Route 66 is much more like the journey of one's life than one might think. It definitely forces you to stop and enjoy the journey, without thinking about the final destination (Los Angeles and the ocean), to accept its unpredictability and to find a solution when things don't go as expected. And for someone like me, who is used to always looking ahead, it wasn't easy to accept.
Tante persone che avevo conosciuto nel 2016 non c'erano più. E' stato un colpo al cuore non trovare Elmer intento a sistemare gelosamente le sue bottiglie nel Forest of Bottle Tree Ranch in California, o vedere come alcune comunità si siano lasciate ancor di più andare, sopraffatte da quella "maledetta highway". Ma poi ho ritrovato l'amico George in Missouri, alla Gary's Gay Parita Gas Station, con il suo volto e la sua voce tipica americana che, mentre veniva intervistato da un giornalista pronto a scrivere un libro sulla Route 66, fermarsi per qualche secondo e dire allo scrittore... "Guarda, io potrei raccontarti mille storie, ma la Route 66 è delle persone...chiedi a lui perchè è di nuovo qui ed avrai le migliori risposte per il tuo libro". Li ho capito tutto. E allora ho rivisto cittadine rifiorire, realizzato che non avrei trovato la stessa "Mother Road" di quasi 10 anni prima, esattamenente come la mia vita.
Many people I had met in 2016 were no longer there. It was heartbreaking not to find Elmer jealously arranging his bottles in the Forest of Bottle Tree Ranch in California, or to see how some communities are now pretty much ghost towns, overwhelmed by that “damned highway.” But then I found my friend George in Missouri, at Gary's Gay Parita Gas Station, with his typical American face and voice, who, while being interviewed by a journalist ready to write a book about Route 66, paused for a few seconds and said to him... “Look, I could tell you a thousand stories, but Route 66 belongs to the people... ask him why he's back and you'll get the best answers for your book.” I understood everything. And then I saw towns flourish again, realizing that I wouldn't find the same “Mother Road” as almost 10 years earlier, just as my life.
Ho ritrovato vecchi amici e ne ho conosciuti di nuovi, e grazie a Roberta ho spezzato i pregiudizi che portavo con me dopo il primo viaggio. Grazie alla sua insistenza ("Portami a vedere questo parco, anzi no... arriviamo fino al fiume") ho completamente stravolto il giudizio che avevo di Tulsa, in Oklahoma, che nel 2016 mi parve ancor più che anonima. E invece, come un libro che leggi per la seconda volta, non solo l'ho trovata molto interessante e con uno dei parchi più belli della nazione, ma con una qualità della vita decisamente alta. Tutto il contrario di quello che pensai nove anni fa. E che alla snob Santa Fe, New Mexico, che rimane comunque un gioiellino intendiamoci, preferisco l'Albuquerque di Breaking Bad, più "dura" , ma sicuramente anche più vera. Tutto è molto personale sulla Route 66, perchè a differenza dei parchi nazionali (qualcuno lo abbiamo visitato) che ti lasciano sempre a bocca aperta, qui scoprirete luoghi non molto turistici e parte del viaggio sarà crearvi un'opinione su luoghi che se non fosse per la Mother Road verrebberro bypassati da moltissimi viaggiatori. In mezzo a tutto questo, proprio come nella vita, anche disavventure (sono stato fermato dalla polizia per la prima volta, ho percorso un trail troppo complicato e sotto una pioggia battente...) ed errori. Uno su tutti? L'aver scelto di pernottare in motel iconici della Route 66 solo una volta, ed è stata l'esperienza più significativa di tutto il viaggio. Tornassi indietro, in barba alle comodità, rinuncerei alle solite, anonime e veramente tutte uguali catene di hotel per vivere qualche esperienza in più in luoghi che da quasi 100 anni fanno sognare intere generazioni di viaggiatori...
I reconnected with old friends and met new ones, and thanks to Roberta, I broke down prejudices I had carried with me after my first trip. Thanks to her repeated requests (“Take me to see this park, or rather... let's go all the way to the river,”) I completely changed my opinion of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which in 2016 seemed an anonymous city to me. Instead, just like a book you read for the second time, i found it very interesting and home to one of the most beautiful parks in the country, but also with a decidedly high quality of life. Quite the opposite of what I thought nine years ago. And I prefer the Albuquerque of Breaking Bad, which is tougher but certainly more authentic, to the snobbish Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is still a gem, mind you. Everything is very personal along the Route 66, because unlike national parks (we visited some), which always leave you speechless, here you will discover places that are not very touristy, and part of the journey will be forming your own opinion about places that, if it weren't for the Mother Road, would be bypassed by many travelers. In the midst of all this, just like in life, there are also misadventures (I was stopped by the police for the first time, I took a trail that was too complicated and in the pouring rain...) and mistakes. One above all? Choosing to stay in iconic Route 66 motels only once, and it was the most meaningful experience of the whole trip. If I could go back, in spite of comfort, i won't stay at usual, anonymous, and truly identical hotel chains: i will instead enjoy a few more experiences in places that have been inspiring entire generations of travelers for almost 100 years...

TUTTO QUELLO CHE C'E' DA SAPERE
A differenza di qualsiasi altro road trip sul territorio americano, facilmente organizzabile grazie alla miriade di informazioni reperibili su internet, quando si parla di Route 66 tutto diventa un po' più complicato. Il motivo è semplice: la Route 66, di fatto, non esiste più e quindi non ci sarà alcun gps che vi permetterà di seguirla. E percorrerla seguendo la highway puntando solamente alle sue attrazioni è la cosa peggiore che si possa fare. Anzi, il consiglio è proprio di non percorrerla affatto. Nel 2016 (a proposito, qui trovate il link per prendere spunto con la vostra organizzazione: ROUTE 66 - 2016) le cose erano ancora più difficili, perchè l'unico modo per seguire la "Mother Road" era grazie alle mappe cartacee "Here it is" unite al senso di orientamento ed ai cartelli stradali che, almeno nei primi stati (Illinois, Missouri ed Oklahoma) erano molto presenti. Ora le cose sono cambiate, fortunatamente. Esiste un'app (a pagamento: 19.99 dollari a settimana, 39,99 all'anno) che è a parer mio fondamentale perche permette di seguire la Route 66 passo dopo passo, curva dopo curva. Il suo nome è ROUTE 66 NAVIGATION (è di colore giallo). Io l'ho usata in questo viaggio e la consiglio vivamente. Come mi sono organizzato? Sul mio telefono la app è sempre rimasta aperta, su quello di Roberta invece utilizzavamo il google maps o waze per cercare le varie attrazioni una volta entrati nella città di riferimento. Non solo, Route 66 Navigation nella sua versione gratuita (nel caso non vogliate spender soldi per la sua versione gps) è utilissima anche nella fase organizzativa. HOW TO ORGANIZE A TRIP ON ROUTE 66
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Unlike any other road trip in the United States, which is easy to organize thanks to the wealth of information available on the internet, when it comes to Route 66, things get a little more complicated. The reason is simple: Route 66 no longer exists, so there is no GPS that will allow travelers to follow the path. And traveling along the highway, focusing only on Route 66's attractions, is the worst thing you can do. If you want to follow the highway, just forget about the Route 66 and plan another trip. In 2016 (by the way, here is a link to help you plan your trip: ROUTE 66 - 2016), things were even more difficult because the only way to follow the “Mother Road” was with “Here it is” paper maps, combined with a sense of direction and road signs, which are very present, at least in the first states (Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma). Fortunately, things have changed. There is an app (for a fee: $19.99 per week, $39.99 per year: update 2025) that I think is essential because it allows you to follow Route 66 step by step, curve by curve. Its name is ROUTE 66 NAVIGATION (it is yellow).

Non dimenticate però che la Route 66 è in costante evoluzione per cui vi capiterà sicuramente di trovare sul percorso attrazioni che il libro non menziona perchè nuovissime o di non trovarne più altre perchè ad esempio, come accade per ristoranti e diner, non più in attività. E poi c'è internet, dove troverete tante chicche sui luoghi da non perdere, cosi come i tanti siti gestiti da coloro i quali tengono in vita lo spirito della Route 66. Da quelli dei vari stati attraversati dalla strada, passando per i "nostri", come ad esempio quello di Franco Zefferi, un grandissimo appassionato della strada più famosa al mondo.

Per Roberta quello lungo la Route 66 era il primo vero viaggio negli Stati Uniti se escludiamo la città di New York. Per questo, una volta raggiunta l'Arizona, abbiamo deviato per qualche giorno verso nord per visitare i più importanti parchi dello stato e, successivamente, per visitare Las Vegas, una scelta che ci ha portato a dover davvero correre per completare le 6000 miglia previste (4000 di Route 66 più 2000 di "deviazioni") in poco più di due settimane. La verità è che due settimane abbondanti andrebbero dedicate solo alla Route 66, senza deviazioni, ma se partirete presto al mattino (intorno alle 7) il nostro percorso vi consentirà vi non perdervi nulla. This was the Route 66 was the first real trip to the United States, excluding New York City. For this reason, once we reached Arizona, we detoured north for a few days to visit the state's most famous parks and then to Las Vegas, a choice that forced us to really rush to complete the planned 6,000 km (4,000 on Route 66 plus 2,000 on “detours”) in just over two weeks.
