Deadwood, South Dakota, Dodge City, Kansas e Tombstone, Arizona. Se volessimo creare il podio delle tre città che più di altre hanno scritto le pagine più significative della storia del vecchio west beh... non si andrebbe troppo lontano dalle tre sopra citate. E proprio la terza il grande highlight di una giornata intensa, nella terra di frontiera per eccellenza. Perchè qui siamo davvero nel cuore del west e, una volta raggiunta la bellissima Bisbee, il confine con Naco e quindi con il Messico è distante solamente 20 km. A Tombstone, grazie anche alla sparatoria dell'Ok Corral che l'ha resa celebre, il turismo è stato negli ultimi 70 anni il carburante per tenere in vita una cittadina che altrimenti come altre qui vicino (su tutte Fairbank, che abbiamo visitato) sarebbe altresì diventata una ghost town. Ma questa è stata anche la giornata di luoghi particolari, come un'isolatissima prigione del vecchio west immersa nel nulla e soprattutto di un Monumento Nazionale tra i meno visitati ma tra i più affascinanti dell'ovest, il Chiricahua National Monument.
Deadwood, South Dakota, Dodge City, Kansas and Tombstone, Arizona. If we wanted to create a list of the three cities that have written the most significant pages in the history of the Old Wild West, well... we wouldn't go too far from the three mentioned above. And the third one is the great highlight of an intense day in the frontier land par excellence. Because here we are truly in the heart of the west and, once we get to the beautiful Bisbee, the border with Naco and Mexico is only 20 km away. In Tombstone, thanks also to the Ok Corral shootout that made it famous, tourism has been the fuel for the last 70 years in order to keep alive a town that otherwise, like others nearby (Fairbank, which we visited, above all), would have also become a ghost town. But this was also the day of special places, such as a very isolated jailof the old west in the middle of nowhere, and above all of one of the least visited but most fascinating national monuments of the west, the Chiricahua National Monument.
CHIRICAHUA NATIONAL MONUMENT
LE ROCCE PIU' BELLE DELL'ARIZONA MERIDIONALE
Ed è proprio da qui che cominciamo il racconto della giornata, ovvero da dove ci eravamo lasciati. Siamo a Willcox, la terra del vino e delle montagne, e ci spingiamo ancora più ad est dello stato, quasi a toccare con mano il confine con il New Mexico. Per raggiungerlo occorre imboccare la "186" e percorrere la Sulphur Springs Valley Loop, una strada che se seguita interamente (poi diventerà "181" ed infine "191") completerà una sorta di loop sulla città di Willcox. La Sulphur Springs non solo è la casa del Chiricahua National Monument, ma anche del Willcox Playa Wildlife Area, uno dei luoghi principali di questa parte dello stato per ammirare l'abbondante fauna selvatica della zona. Noi però siamo diretti al monumento nazionale, distante 50 km da Willcox, un tratto durante il quale la civiltà scompare lentamente per lasciar spazio alle montagne. Proprio le catene montuose del parco separano l'Arizona dal New Mexico e l'unica strada (decisamente suggestiva, ma non asfaltata!) che collega i due stati in questo tratto è la "42 Forest Road".
CHIRICAHUA NATIONAL MONUMENT
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROCKS OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA
This is where we begin our story of the day, right where we left off. We're in Willcox, the land of wine and mountains, and we're going further east in the state, almost touching the border with New Mexico. To get there, we need to take the "186" and drive along the Sulphur Springs Valley Loop, a road that if followed entirely (it then becomes "181" and finally "191"), completes a sort of loop over the town of Willcox. Sulphur Springs is not only home of Chiricahua National Monument, but also of Willcox Playa Wildlife Area, one of the premier places in this part of the state to view the abundant wildlife. However, we are here to visit the National Monument, 30 miles east of Willcox, a stretch of road lacking in civilization. The mountain ranges of the park separate Arizona from New Mexico, and the only road (definitely impressive, but not paved!) that connects the two states in this stretch is the "42 Forest Road".
Noi però puntiamo dritto verso il Chiricahua National Monument (ingresso gratuito) ed alle 8 miglia della Bonita Canyon Drive che ci permetterà di ammirare alcune delle rocce più suggestive dello stato nonostante l'incredibile freddo (temperatura vicina agli zero gradi di fine dicembre). Creato dall'attività vulcanica risalente a millenni fa, il parco vanta montagne i cui picchi sono tra i più iconici della zona, alcuni dei quali visitabili grazie a 17 miglia di percorsi escursionistici.
However, we aim towards Chiricahua National Monument (free admission) and the 8 miles of the Bonita Canyon Drive that allows us to admire some of the most striking rocks in the state despite the incredible cold (0 degrees celsius in late December). Created by volcanic activity dating back millennia, the park boasts mountains whose peaks are some of the most iconic in the area, some of which can be visited thanks to 17 miles of hiking trails.
COSA VEDERE NEL CHIRICAHUA NATIONAL MONUMENT
1) Lungo la Bonita Canyon Drive, che prende il via appena dopo aver superato il "welcome sign" del parco, potrete immediatamente sgranchirvi le gambe con il piccolo loop (0.2 miglia) del Bonita Creek (sulla sinistra), dove con un po' di fortuna potrete anche ammirare i cervi dalla coda bianca.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO AT CHIRICAHUA NATIONAL MONUMENT
1) Along the Bonita Canyon Drive, which kicks off just after the park's "welcome sign," visitors can immediately stretch their legs with the small loop (0.2 miles) of Bonita Creek (on the left), where with any luck you'll also encounter the white-tailed deer.
2) Poco dopo aver lasciato il parcheggio, una deviazione sulla sinistra conduce sulla sinistra al Faraway Ranch Historic District. E' l'occasione per fare un passo indietro nel tempo e visitare il ranch della famiglia Erickson che possiamo tranquillamente considerare i fondatori del monumento nazionale di Chiricahua. Dall'altra parte della strada, proseguendo per qualche centinaio di metri, troverete anche il visitor center.
2) Shortly after leaving the parking lot, a detour on the left leads to the Faraway Ranch Historic District. This is your chance to step back in time and visit the ranch of the Erickson family, who we can safely consider the founders of Chiricahua National Monument. Across the street, continuing a few hundred yards, you will also find the visitor center.
3) Il primo vero viewpoint è l'Organ Pipe Formation, una bellissima formazione di rocce rosate che ricordano le canne di un organo. Sono situate sulla sinistra, poco dopo aver lasciato il visitor center lungo la Bonita Canyon Drive.
3) The first real viewpoint is the Organ Pipe Formation, a beautiful formation of pinkish rocks that resemble organ pipes. They are located on the left, shortly after leaving the visitor center along the Bonita Canyon Drive.
4) Da qui vi consigliamo di proseguire senza soste sino alla conclusione della Bonita Canyon Drive: è qui, infatti, che prendono il via i trail più belli del Chiricahua National Monument. Il percorso più semplice, ma anche tra i più suggestivi, è sicuramente il Massai Point Nature Trail, un loop di 0,8 km che offre belle viste sui pinnacoli rocciosi e sulle montagne circostanti.
4) From here, we recommend to continue unabated to the end of Bonita Canyon Drive: here, in fact, you can find the most beautiful trails in Chiricahua National Monument. The easiest trail, but also one of the most scenic, is the Massai Point Nature Trail, a 0.8km loop that offers beautiful views of the rocky pinnacles and surrounding mountains.
5) Echo Canyon Grottoes, situato non lontano dal precedente, è invece il percoso un po' più lungo ma ancor più bello rispetto al primo. Dovrete lasciare la vostra auto al parking lot del Echo Canyon e seguire l'Echo Canyon Grottoes trail (1,6 km andata/ritorno) che fa parte del più lungo Echo Canyon loop e conduce, passando per formazioni rocciose particolari, a grotte formate da archi scavati nella roccia e connessi fra di loro. Potrete percorrere solamente l'Echo Canyon Grottoes e tornare sui vostri passi, oppure completare il loop: in questo caso il trail diventerà di 3.3 miglia (loop trail). Il consiglio è di seguire il percorso in senso antiorario e di considerare almeno 2 ore per completarlo.
5) Echo Canyon Grottoes, located not far from the previous one, is a bit longer but even more beautiful than the first one. You will have to leave your car at the Echo Canyon parking lot and follow the Echo Canyon Grottoes trail (1,6 km round trip) that is part of the longer Echo Canyon loop and leads, passing through particular rock formations, to caves formed by arches carved in the rock and connected to each other. You can either only hike the Echo Canyon Grottoes and retrace your steps, or complete the loop: in this case the trail is 3.3 miles (loop trail). The advice is to follow the trail counterclockwise: it takes at least two hours.
VERSO TOMBSTONE. TRA GHOST TOWN E PRIGIONI DEL VECCHIO WEST
Delle tre città che compongono il grande trittico west del sud dell'Arizona (Tombstone, Bisbee e Benson), quest'ultima è decisamente quella che più si adeguata al cambiamento dei tempi. Benson, che fu fondata nel 1880 quando la Southern Pacific Railroad iniziò ad attraversare l'Arizona, visse il momento di massimo splendore agli inizi del secolo scorso, quando la città fungeva da snodo ferroviario importante e centro di smistamento per le vicine Tombstone, Bisbee, Fairbank e Contention City. Oggi la città è forse meglio conosciuta come la porta di accesso al Kartchner Caverns State Park, la grande attrazione dell'area, ma anche per un museo particolare, situato ad est della città stessa lungo la "Interstate 10", il "The Thing", una delle attrazioni più singolari dello stato, che collega l'estinzione dei dinosauri con gli alieni. Poco più a sud, in direzione Tombstone, una piccola deviazione sulla destra (circa 6 miglia lungo la "82") conduce alla ghost town di Fairbank. La storia della città fantasma è sostanzialmente simile a tutte le altre: fondata nel 1882, era il principale (e più vicino) punto di rifornimento per Tombstone, ma serviva inoltre i numerosi mercantili che trasportavano il materiale delle miniere di Tomsbstone ai mulini di Contention City e Charleston. In quegli anni, oltre ai 100 residenti, avreste trovato un ufficio della Wells Fargo, un negozio, un mercato della carne, un ristorante, un saloon ed un mulino. Ora l'edificio più visibile è la scuola del 1920.
TOWARDS TOMBSTONE. AMONG GHOST TOWNS AND OLD WEST JAILS
Of the three towns that make up the great western triptych of southern Arizona (Tombstone, Bisbee and Benson), this last is the one that has adapted over time. Benson, which was founded in 1880 when the Southern Pacific Railroad began crossing Arizona, experienced its heyday in the early part of the last century, when the town used to serve as a major railroad hub and sorting center for nearby Tombstone, Bisbee, Fairbank and Contention City. Today, the town is perhaps best known as the gateway to Kartchner Caverns State Park, the area's main attraction, but also for a particular museum, located east of the town itself along "Interstate 10," "The Thing," one of the state's most unique attractions, linking the extinction of dinosaurs with aliens. A little further south towards Tombstone, a small detour on the right (about 6 miles along the "82") leads to the ghost town of Fairbank. The ghost town's history is basically similar to all the others: founded in 1882, it was the main (and closest) supply point for Tombstone, but it also served the many freighters that transported material from the Tomsbstone mines to the mills in Contention City and Charleston. In those years, in addition to 100 residents, you would have found a Wells Fargo office, a store, a meat market, a restaurant, a saloon and a mill. Now the most visible building is the 1920's schoolhouse.
Con la chiusura delle miniere e complice un alluvione del fiume San Pedro, la città di Fairbank divenne ben presto una ghost town, ma non prima di essere entrata nei libri del vecchio west grazie a Billy Stiles e Burt Alvord, entrambi vice sceriffi, che nel 1900 si unirono ai fratelli Owen, Bravo Juan Yaos, Bob Brown e “tre dita” Jack Dunlap per rapinare il treno della Wells Fargo. Una missione finita malissimo grazie all'intervento dello sceriffo Milton.
With the closing of the mines and aided by a flood of the San Pedro River, the town of Fairbank soon became a ghost town, but not before being entered the books of the old west thanks to Billy Stiles and Burt Alvord, both deputy sheriffs, who in 1900 joined the Owen brothers, Bravo Juan Yaos, Bob Brown and "three-fingered" Jack Dunlap to rob the Wells Fargo train. A mission that ended badly thanks to the intervention of Sheriff Milton.
Prima di visitare Tombstone tuttavia, vi consigliamo un'altra deviazione, questa volta verso sinistra proprio a sud della città simbolo del west. Percorrete la Gleeson Road che nell'ultimo tratto diventerà sterrata per 16 miglia sino a raggiungere l'incrocio tra West Gleeson e High Lonesome Roads. Qui non potrete non notare un'attrazione singolare, nel cuore del deserto, la Gleeson Jail. Qui, ancora una volta, bisogna andare indietro nel tempo e ripercorrere la storia di Gleeson, un tempo dimora della tribù Chiricahua Apache.
Before visiting Tombstone, however, we recommend another detour, this time to the left, just south of the town that is a symbol of the west. Take the Gleeson Road, the last stretch of which becomes a dirt road for 16 miles until you reach the intersection of West Gleeson and High Lonesome Roads. Here you will not fail to notice a unique attraction in the heart of the desert, the Gleeson Jail. Here, once again, you must go back in time and trace the history of Gleeson, once home to the Chiricahua Apache tribe.
Dopo che i membri della tribù furono uccisi o trasferiti, i cercatori continuarono a scavare alla ricerca del turchese, ma fu quando John Gleeson scoprì un grande deposito di rame, che la città esplose. Durante il suo periodo di massimo splendore, Gleeson raggiunse una popolazione di oltre 1.000 abitanti, un numero che stona con i soli 5 abitanti dei giorni nostri. Eppure, a ricordo dei tempi che furono, svetta ancora oggi la prigione risalente al 1910, visitabile il primo ed il quarto sabato di ogni mese previo appuntamento. All'interno, troverai manufatti, cimeli e una mappa per un tour a piedi attraverso il cimitero ed i resti della scuola e dell'ospedale.
After members of the tribe were killed or relocated, seekers have continued to dig looking for turquoise, but it was when John Gleeson discovered a large copper deposit that the town exploded. During its heyday, Gleeson reached a population of more than 1,000, a number that clashes with the 5 inhabitants of the modern day. Yet, as a reminder of those times, the prison dating back to 1910 still stands today, and can be visited on the first and fourth Saturday of each month by appointment. Inside, you'll find artifacts, memorabilia and a map for a walking tour through the cemetery and the remains of the school and hospital.

Di Tombstone, tradotto letteralmente (la Pietra Tombale) ne abbiamo parlato già in lungo ed in largo. Perchè l'abbiamo già visitata (era il 2014) e perchè qui, anche se in maniera a volte un po' artificiale, si respira l'aria del vecchio west. TOMBSTONE, THE... "TOMBSTONE" OF THE WEST
We have already talked about Tombstone far and wide. Because we have already visited it (2014) and because here, even if in a bit artificial way, you can breathe the air of the old west. Come l'abbiamo ritrovata a distanza di otto anni? Beh, sempre piena di fascino. E' vero, i puristi storceranno il naso perchè un po' troppo turistica, ma quella strada polverosa, quelle comparse vestite come ai tempi del vecchio west e, soprattutto, quegli edifici che hanno fatto la storia beh, no, non possono lasciare indifferenti.
How did we find her again eight years later? Well, still full of charm. Partendo dall'Ok Corral, dove si sviluppò la sparatoria più famosa del west, passando per il Bird Cage Theatre, con ancora ben visibili i tavoli da gioco dove Doc Holliday si divertiva e le camere originali dove si esercitava il mestiere piu' vecchio del mondo. E poi il museo Gunfighter Hall of Fame, con gli oggetti che hanno scritto la storia di quel periodo ed alcuni donati da Clint Eastwood e John Wayne e l'Old Tombstone Western Theme Park, dove in un set del 1880 i cowboy mettono in scena uno spettacolo elettrizzante ricco di... sparatorie. Ovviamente.
Starting from the Ok Corral, where the most famous gunfight of the West took place, passing through the Bird Cage Theatre, where you can still see the gaming tables where Doc Holliday used to have fun and the original rooms where the oldest profession in the world was practiced. And then the Gunfighter Hall of Fame museum, with the objects that wrote the history of that period and some donated by Clint Eastwood and John Wayne and the Old Tombstone Western Theme Park, where in a set of 1880 the cowboys put on an electrifying show full of.... gunfights. Obviously.
E, per concludere, non dimenticatevi di fare un salto alla Tombstone Brewing Company, che produce birra artigianale (sei nuove birre in media ogni mese!) di grande qualità. Quando farà caldo e la polvere si alzerà lungo main street, sarà il vostro rifugio...
And finally, don't forget to stop by Tombstone Brewing Company, which brews great craft beer (six new beers on average every month!). When it gets hot and the dust kicks up along main street, it will definitely be your refuge....
BISBEE, RINNOVARSI SENZA DIMENTICARE LE PROPRIE RADICI
Inutile girarci intorno, Bisbee è proprio carina. E completamente diversa da tutte le città che hanno scritto le pagini principali della storia western. Sarà per i suoi edifici, oppure per le sue strade tortuose che l'attraversano, ma assomiglia davvero ad una cittadina europea. Eppure siamo a 20 km dal Messico, in una comunità nata nel 1880, tre anni dopo la nascita della fiorente Queen Mine, una delle più ricche miniere di rame della storia, capace di resistere per quasi 100 anni, sino al 1970. Ora Bisbee, conosciuta come "Old Bisbee", è la casa di una fiorente scena culturale, di un'architettura di livello, di case vittoriane e di un elegante tribunale in stile art decò. A partire da John Wayne, sono in tanti i personaggi famosi ad essere sempre stati attirati da Bisbee, tanto da permettere alla città di sviluppare diversi servizi come bar, ristoranti e teatri, ma anche le stesse case, il cui valore ora supera di gran lunga quello delle altre città del sud dell'Arizona.
BISBEE HAS BEEN ABLE TO INNOVATE WITHOUT FORGETTING ITS ROOTS
Needless to say, Bisbee is really nice. And it's completely different from all the towns that have written the main pages of western history. Maybe it's because of its buildings, or because of the winding streets that crisscross it, but it really does look like an European town. Yet we are 20 km far from Mexico, in a community born in 1880, three years after the birth of the flourishing Queen Mine, one of the richest copper mines in history, able to resist for almost 100 years, until 1970. Now Bisbee, known as "Old Bisbee," is home to a thriving cultural scene, level-headed architecture, Victorian homes and an elegant art deco courthouse. Starting with John Wayne, so many celebrities have been drawn to Bisbee: it has also been able to develop many amenities such as bars, restaurants and theaters, as well as the homes themselves. The value of which now far exceeds that of other southern Arizona cities.
A sud di Bisbee, non perdetevi una minuscola comunità, Lowell, e la sua particolarissima Erie Street. Già, perchè vi sembrerà di tornare per qualche secondo lungo la mitica Route 66. Troverete parcheggiate in strada alcune auto del passato, ed ammirerete negozi particolari in quella che fino al 1950 è stata una fiorente comunità. A ricordare, ancora una volta, dei tempi che furono, c'è questa via, che sa proprio tanto di America...
Just south of Bisbee, don't miss a tiny community, Lowell, and its very special Erie Street. That's right, because you'll feel like you're back along the legendary Route 66 for a few seconds. You'll find cars from the past parked on the street, and you'll admire unique stores in what has been a thriving community until 1950. As a reminder, once again, of the times that were, there is this street, which tastes so much of America...

HOTEL: Hampton Inn Sierra Vista
Rispetto a Willcox, Sierra Vista è decisamente una città più grande e con più possibilità di scelta. L'Hampton Inn si è rivelato un ottimo hotel per la classica delle "notti di passaggio". In un viaggio dove non sempre abbiamo scelto bene quando si trattava di dove cenare, non potevamo sbagliare qui a Sierra Vista. Il motivo? Qui abbiamo trovato Texas Roadhouse, quella che come avrete ormai capito, consideriamo la miglior catena di steakhouse degli Stati Uniti. E che continuiamo a consigliare, anche per i suoi prezzi decisamente non impegnativi...
CITY: Sierra Vista
HOTEL: Hampton Inn Sierra Vista
Compared to Willcox, Sierra Vista is definitely a bigger city with more options when it comes to overnight staying. The Hampton Inn turned out to be a great hotel for the classic one night stay. During this trip we haven't always made good choices when it came to where to dine, but we really couldn't go wrong here in Sierra Vista. The reason? Here you can find Texas Roadhouse, what as you may have guessed by now, we consider the best steakhouse chain in the United States. And that we continue to recommend, also for its prices.
