2013 TRIP: Texas and New Mexico (part 1 - San Antonio)

Pensi agli Stati Uniti e... dopo New York e California è molto probabile che la terza parola sia il Texas. Per chi conosce superficialmente gli Usa, uno dei simboli a stelle a strisce, per loro, gli americani, un posto strano, molto strano...dove "everything is bigger", tutto è più grande. E non solo. La carne, i cowboy, le grandi praterie, il caldo, la ricchezza collegata al petrolio, e, perchè no, le donne, fanno del Texas uno stato sostanzialmente unico dove per molti vale il Davy Crockett pensiero, "you may go to hell, i will go to Texas". Noi, da grandi "big eater", non potevamo certo lasciarci sfuggire l'occasione di visitarlo e nell'estate nel 2013 l'abbiamo unito al New Mexico  in un trip di oltre 2000 miglia sostanzialmente unico...

If you think about the States, after New York City and California, probably the third word could be Texas. If you don't know well the country, Texas could be one of symbols of the States, but for most Americans Texas is a weird state, where everything is bigger. Meat, cowboys, huge prairies, hot, richness and women make Texas a unique place. Davy Crockett said: "You may go to hell, I will go to Texas". Our 2013 trip was Texas and New Mexico, more than 2000 miles of adventure..

SAN ANTONIO
Sarà che tutto quello che "fa Messico" ci piace, sarà perché seguiamo la Nba, ma non appena abbiamo deciso di fiondarci sul Texas, San Antonio è stata la nostra prima scelta. Si parte dunque dal profondo sud Texas, dove l'influenza messicana è evidente e tutto ha un ritmo molto lento, quasi rilassato. Dopo aver noleggiato l'auto dall'ormai collaudatissima Alamo e aver mangiato il primo tacos della spedizione siamo pronti per spendere i primi due giorni e mezzo della nostra vacanza all'ombra dell'Alamo, uno dei simboli di una città che ci ha colpito molto.

We really like all the things connected to Mexico, we also like NBA basketball and San Antonio was our first choice. We started from the deep south of Texas, where the mexican influence is evident and where everybody is relaxed. We rented our car from Alamo as usual and after the first taco of the trip we were ready to spend our first two days of the vacation in the city of Alamo. 

San Antonio è piuttosto comoda per un turista. Niente taxi, niente metropolitana, niente bus, camminando puoi raggiungere tutte le attrazioni. Tutto ruota attorno al San Antonio Riverwalk, uno splendido fiume che attraversa la città, sulle cui sponde centinaia e centinaia di persone affollano ristoranti e bar che ti permettono di godere di bellissime visuali. Decidiamo di esordire con La Villita...

San Antonio is really an easy city for a tourist. No cabs, no subway, no buses you can reach all the attractions of the town by walking. The most important is the Riverwalk, the heart of the city, a really nice river that goes through San Antonio downtown. On every side you can see a lot of people eating at the restaurants or having fun with a drink. We started with "The Villita"...

....per poi dirigerci verso il Riverwalk, che rappresenta sostanzialmente la downtown di San Antonio. Per gli americani è una sorta di "Venice", ovviamente siamo molto molto lontani dalla nostra Venezia, ma il fascino del Riverwalk è del tutto particolare...

then we went to the Riverwalk. For the Americans San Antonio is a sort of "Venice", of course it's not the same but the city has its charm.

 Costeggiandolo si arriva all'Alamo, è metà pomeriggio e fa molto caldo, ma una ventina di minuti di coda per entrare (gratis) in quello che a tutti gli effetti è uno dei simboli della città e dell'intero stato, ci sembrano il minimo tributo da offrire a San Antonio.

It's afternoon and it's really hot, but Alamo is Alamo. We can afford the half an hour wait to go inside. Alamo is not only a symbol of San Antonio, it's a symbol of all the State. 

Non sarà l'Empire State Building e neppure la Sears Tower, ma la Tower of Americas, merita una visita. Con 11.50$ a testa saliamo sino alla cima e ci gustiamo non solo la vista su San Antonio e dintorni, ma anche un mini-film in 3d sulla storia del Texas e della città.

It's not the Empire State Building or the Sears Tower, but the Tower of America worth a visit. With few dollars we go on the top where there is a beautiful scenary and a nice 3D movie dedicated to San Antonio and Texas. 

Il clou è però certamente la "gitarella" in barca sul Riverwalk, immancabile se sei a San Antonio. Con poco più di 8.00$ a testa trascorriamo un'ora immersi tra le mura della città, una sorta di "pulman rosso - sightseeing", ormai habitué delle grandi città, ma lungo il fiume.

The main event is the Riverwalk tour on the boat. It takes one hour, amazing experience.

Ah, a San Antonio tutto nasce e finisce con i rodeo e soprattutto con i San Antonio Spurs, una tra le squadre Nba più vincenti dell'ultimo ventennio. Indossare la canotta di Ginobili significa catturare le attenzioni della gentilissima signorina che guida la barca lungo il riverwalk: un paio di importanti consigli sulla città e sul cibo...

San Antonio starts and finishes with the rodeos and with the San Antonio Spurs, one the most important teams of the NBA. If you wear the "Ginobili" shirt, the woman who drives the boat will talk with you giving you some important information about the city...

...anche se per la sera era già stato tutto deciso. Il "Man vs Food" tour era solo all'inizio, ma la partenza era davvero con il botto. Usciamo dalla Old town, entriamo in periferia e, dopo una brevissima sosta all'AT&T Center (il palazzo dello sport dove gli "Spurs" disputano le loro partite interne) ci dirigiamo verso est, dove ad attenderci c'è Big Lou's Pizza. Sì, la pizzeria più famosa del Texas e resa ancor più celebre da Adam Richman con il suo "Man vs Food". Sono le 19 e ci sono ancora almeno una trentina di gradi, davanti a noi c'è una fila di almeno 40/50 persone che aspettano di entrare, ma nonostante non fossimo proprio felicissimi di aspettare un'ora abbondante al caldo, decidiamo che Big Lou's s'ha da fare.

It's evening and we are really excited about dinner. The "Man vs food" tour has just started, we stop for few minutes at "At&T center" and then we go to Big Lou's Pizza., in the east of the city. It's one of the most famous pizzeria of the state and it has become more famous after Adam Richman being here. It's 7 pm, it's hot, and in front of us there are at least 40/50 people in front of us but, even if we weren't so happy to wait, we decided to stay and eat the famous big pizza at Big lou's.

Ve l'avevamo detto che "everything is bigger in Texas?" Se qualcuno avesse ancora dubbi da Big Lou's servono pizza lunga un metro e tra le altre cose anche molto buona. Noi ci "accontentiamo" della "16 inch", se siete spaventati dalla grandezza non dovete comunque preoccuparvi del "check" abbiamo cenato con soli 20.00$

Did we tell you that everything is bigger in Texas? They serve pizza as huge as a man, but we take the "20 inch".

ma qualcuno riesce a fare molto meglio, o peggio a seconda di come la si interpreta.

La mattina successiva, prima di lasciare San Antonio direzione Austin ci fermiamo al "mercado", di impronta chiaramente messicana, poi a malincuore salutiamo una città che avrebbe meritato sicuramente almeno un giorno di permanenza in più.

The next morning, before leaving San Antonio, we stop at Mercado, a mexican market and then, with a lot of sadness inside us we are forced to leave a very beautiful city.

2013 Easter trip: Chicago (day 1)

Per noi gli Usa sono una "desease", una malattia. E proprio questa malattia, a settembre 2012 (ovvero un mese dopo esser tornati dal trip estivo) ci ha portato a fare la nostra prima ed unica pazzia per una terra che continua a darci tantissimo. Perchè pazzia? Semplice, andare per soli 5 giorni negli Stati Uniti solitamente non si fa, ma era l'unico modo per realizzare il sogno di Marco di vedere dal vivo una partita Nba. Perchè Chicago? Per due motivi: volevamo unire una delle città più importanti e belle d'America ma di difficile inserimento in un trip (non avevamo e non abbiamo ancora in cantiere nè la route 66, nè i grandi laghi) ad un evento sportivo. Decidiamo di regalarcelo per Natale, ma ci andremo nella settimana di Pasqua...

For us, the U.S. is a " desease ". And this disease, in September 2012 (one month after we returned from the summer trip) led us to make our first and only madness for a land that continues to give us so much. Why madness ? Simple, go for just 5 days into the United States it's not a brilliant idea, but it was the only way to realize the Marco's dream: watch an Nba match live. Why Chicago? For two reasons: we wanted to connect one of the most important and beautiful cities of America to a sport event.

Due dei soprannomi di Chicago sono "the wind city" e "the second city", ovvero la seconda città dietro New York. Per noi, come direbbe Dan Peterson, che tra l'altro è proprio originario dell'Illinois, "Chicago numero 1" tutta la vita. Solo San Francisco, negli Stati Uniti, può reggere il confronto con la città del vento, ma ovviamente come abbiamo già più volte detto "non è bello ciò che è bello, ma è bello ciò che piace".

Two of Chicago's nicknames are " the wind city" and "the second city" , which is the second-largest city behind New York. For us Chicago is the number one. Only San Francisco can be compared to Chicago, but of course it's only our point of view.

Arriviamo a Chicago che è già sera e, dopo aver lasciato i bagagli nel lussuoso hotel (fin troppo per noi, che eravamo davvero in soggezione) andiamo grazie ai consigli della splendida Alice detta anche bambola (se leggi, ancora grazie!), ormai chicagoana d'adozione, da "buddy Guy" ad ascoltare buona musica e farci il primo burger&budlight...

We arrive in Chicago and it's already evening. we leave our baggage in our hotel and go straight to Buddy Guy: listen good music and eat our first "burger&budlight" is the plan.

Ah, Chicago è la città del blues e ancora oggi questa atmosfera si respira in tutta la downtown. Capitolo pericolosità: Nulla di più e nulla di meno di Miami, New York e Los Angeles. Noi siamo rimasti cinque giorni lungo le sponde del lago Michigan (eccezion fatta per quando ci siamo recati allo United Center) e dunque evitato le zone "pericolose". Ma abbiamo fondamentalmente ormai imparato che tutte le grandi città del mondo hanno zone "pericolose", basta evitarle...

2013 TRIP: Texas and New Mexico (part 2 - Austin - Fort Stockton - El Paso)

La mattina del 21 luglio, dopo la visita a EL MERCADO di San Antonio ed una veloce fermata al supermarket per acquistare il nostro classico pranzo a base di banana e yogurt (eh si, perchè da bravi "eaters" il motto è: se per cena ti vuoi abbuffare come Adam Richman, a pranzo dobbiamo fare spazio"), ci dirigiamo verso Austin, la capitale del Texas, definita anche "la città giovane". Austin è famosa per la sua università statale, la "University of Texas" o Austin AT, che rende questa città decisamente giovanile. Lungo la strada vediamo l'indicatore di temperatura dell'auto alzarsi sempre di più miglio dopo miglio: 108 F, poi 109 e 110. Toccheremo i 115, l'equivalente dei nostri 46 gradi centigradi.

The morning of the 21st of July, after a stop at the market, we buy some bananas and yogurt for lunch and then we move to Austin, the capital of Texas, called "the young city", famous for its university that welcomes a lot of guys. During the travel we notice that the temperature is growing. from 108 F to 115 F.

 

Arrivati al nostro motel e scaricato i bagagli decisiamo che fa troppo caldo per avventurarci in città e quindi ci rilassiamo un po' in piscina in attesa della grande cena che Marco ha promesso da tempo. Il motto della città è "keep Austin weird" e l'avremo poi notato la sera stessa. Ma andiamo con ordine. Seguendo le orme di Adam Richman, ci mettiamo in macchina e guidiamo attraverso i tipici ranch del Texas sino a raggiungerne uno, quasi nascosto, il Salt Lick, dove manco a farlo apposta regna il BBQ. Ah, gli americani sono splendidi ma anche strani, non a caso qui puoi anche presentarti con zainetto pieno di cibo e vino ed ascoltare musica country live senza ordinare alcuna pietanza. Crediamo ci sia da pagare un ticket, altrimenti sarebbe davvero molto "weird".

It's really very hot and we decide not to go to the downtown. We prefer to stay at the pool, waiting for the big dinner that Marco promised months ago. The slogan of the city is "keep Austin weird" and we will notice this that night. Following Adam Richam and his "man vs food", we drive through many ranches till reaching the Salt Lick Bbq.

 

Ecco, birra texana (lì, più che in altri stati sono molto legati alle radici e tutto quello che non è texano non sempre è visto di buon occhio) e poi la cena che aspettavamo da tempo.

We order texan beer (here, more than in the other states, people are strictly connected to their roots and foreigner things are not always accepted with a smile) with the dinner of the dreams...

 

Ricordate vero che "everything is bigger in Texas"? E lo sapevate che anche la carne si scioglie come burro? Un bisteccone, diviso ovviamente in due perchè gigante, completo di due contorni più birretta a soli 45 dollari.

Do you remember that everything is bigger in Texas right? And... do you know that meat mealts like butter? A big splitted steak, with 2 vegetables sides and beer for 45 dollars.

 

Ricordate vero che "everything is bigger in Texas"? E lo sapevate che anche la carne si scioglie come burro? Un bisteccone, diviso ovviamente in due perchè gigante, completo di due contorni più birretta a soli 45 dollari. Fuori dal ristorante, in una sorta di parco giochi per bambini, incontriamo i primi (e per fortuna unici) italiani, da anni ormai trapiantati in Texas. Poi, incuriositi dai tanti racconti positivi che avevamo raccolto sulla downtown di Austin, ci tuffiamo nei locali della città. Passeggiamo per il lungo viale e ci fermiamo al "Coyote Ugly". Sì, il riferimento è proprio a quel Coyote Ugly, dove l'Ale viene sostanzialmente "rapita" dalle cameriere e per una ventina di minuti diventerà una ballerina sul bancone.

Outside the restaurant we meet the first (and luckily the last) italians who are living in Austin. Then it's time to go to the downtown and, after a little walk, we stop at the "Coyote Ugly", where ale will dances for at least 20 minutes.

 

Ecco, questo è uno dei tanti motivi per cui Austin viene definita strana: qui regnano i giovani, qui regna il divertimento anche se non noi non l'abbiam trovata poi così interessante. Anzi, potessimo tornare indietro toglieremmo un giorno ad Austin per dedicarlo a San Antonio.

Passiamo la mattinata successiva ad uno dei tanti laghi artificiali della città...

This is why Austin is called "weird": is the kingdom of young people, the kingdom of fun, even if we didn't like the city as much as San Antonio. The morning after we enjoy one of the lakes of the city...

 

ma sarà il caldo, sarà il fuso orario, però Ale non se la passa benissimo e decidiamo dunque per un pomeriggio ed una serata davvero easy. Ci buttiamo da Walmarth e poi Target (shopping) e per cena optiamo per un frozen yogurt nella yogurteria di una coppietta di signori che diventano subito nostri "amici", incuriositi da insoliti turisti italiani (incapaci di prepararsi un frozen yogurt da soli...) nella periferia di Austin. Niente serata in downtown, ma con in mano un pacchetto di doritos, golden oreo e l'immancabile budlight (quando la importeremo sarà sempre troppo tardi...) passiamo la serata a bordo piscina con la receptionist che ci racconta della sua vita parecchio complicata: sua madre è ancora oggi vittima della droga, lei ne è uscita dopo tanta sofferenza e tanti sacrifici staccandosi dalla madre e creandosi una nuova famiglia. Respect!

Because of the hot, or maybe because of the Jetlag, Ale isn't in a good shape and we decide to do shopping at Walmarth and Target. For dinner we have a delicious Frozen Yogurt and then a very touching conversation with the receptionist. She tells us that she had a lot of problems with drugs, her mother is still in trouble but she is trying to have a new life...

 

La mattina successiva lasciamo Austin, ma prima di avventurarci nel "tappone" della vacanza, ci fermiamo in uno dei tanti parchi della città e, dopo aver fatto un bel giretto panoramico sul treno dei bambini (poteva mancare?)...

It's time to leave Austin. Today we are going to face a huge stage so, before leaving, we need to relax on a train for kids. This is us...

Manca poco a mezzogiorno, è tempo di partire: ci aspettano 6 ore abbondanti di macchina, "tagliamo" il Texas con destinazione Fort Stockton. Lungo il tragitto ci fermiamo nella caratteristica Fredericksburg (qui l'influenza tedesca è evidente) per un bel caffè freddo...

It's a long trip (6 hours), destination Fort Stockton. During the way we stop at Fredericksburg, where the influence of Germany is evident, for a delicious ice coffee...

 

Arrivati a Fort Stockton, la tipica città americana in mezzo al nulla, c'è spazio solamente per la solita immancabile cena a base di carne (grazie anche a delle simpaticissime signore che ci consigliano...) e per la prima bevuta di margarita e birra nel mason jar che il buon Toby Keith sempre menziona e che finalmente scopriamo, anche qui ce la caviamo con un check di 42.00$

In Fort Stockton, a classical city in the middle of nowhere, there is time only for our usual dinner with meat and for the first margaritas and beer drunk in the mason Jar that Toby Keith always mentions: 42.00$ is the check

 

Fort Stockton è la più classica delle tappe di trasferimento e di buon'ora, il mattino successivo, siamo già in direzione El Paso perchè nel tardo pomeriggio vorremmo essere in Nex Mexico per affrontare il parco delle White Sands. Non sappiamo cosa aspettarci da El Paso (anche perchè la serie tv The Bridge doveva ancora uscire in Italia), l'unico aspetto di cui eravamo a conoscenza era che lì è cambiata, grazie ad una partita di pallacanestro, gran parte della storia americana legata al razzismo, più di preciso alla University of Texas El Paso. (cfr. Glory Road, un film che assolutamente consigliamo).

The day after we wake up early, El Paso is waiting for us and we would like to arrive at White Sands National Park in the afternoon. We don't what to expect from El Paso (also because the tv series "The Bridget" was going to arrive in Italy in september, one month later), we only know that in that city a basketball match changed a lot of thing regardings the racism (cfr. Glory Road).

 

No, El Paso non è la classica città degli Stati Uniti. Qui non si respira aria messicana, qui è Messico americanizzato. Ad una manciata di metri c'è il "borderline", il confine...

El Paso isn't the classical american city. Here it's like to be in Mexico but with all the comforts of the States. The borderline is not far...

 

e lo si capisce non solo dalla quantità di messicani che varcano tale confine e "invadono" la città, ma anche dai prezzi piuttosto bassi (es. due bottiglie d'acqua per un solo dollaro). Fa ovviamente anche parecchio caldo e con un paio di dollari ci rinfreschiamo con una "piccola" granita alla fragola...

and you notice that not only because there are a lot of mexincan people, but also because everything costs less (two bottles of water for 1 dollar). It's hot and we have a "little" "granita"...

 

L'atmosfera è quasi surreale, visitiamo la famosa università e il "Don Haskins Center", ma la cosa che ovviamente ci colpisce maggiormente è quello che si vede oltre il bordeline dalla collina che ospita El Paso. In una manciata di metri si passa dalla ricchezza americana alla povertà messicana.

Atmosphere is surreal, we visit the famous university and the "Don Haskins Center", but the thing that surprises us the most is what you see beyond the borderline. In few miles the richness of Us and the poverty of Mexico.

CITTA': Austin - El Paso

CONSIDERAZIONI: Austin, tra tutte le città che abbiamo visitato nel trip 2013 è stata quella che ci ha dato di meno. Con il senno di poi avremmo fatto un giorno in meno qui ed uno in più a San Antonio. El Paso invece merita sicuramente una visita (mezza giornata) anche solamente per avvicinarsi a quel "borderline" che per tanti messicani rappresenta l'ultima fermata prima del Paradiso...

Austin worth definitely a visit, but not more than a day, El Paso worth a visit (half a day) even just to approach the bordeline, for many mexicans the last stop before the paradise...

Trip 2012 & 2013: Boston and Cape Cod

Se quando parliamo di Usa rischiamo di essere clamorosamente di parte, vi lasciamo immaginare ciò che può accadere quando ci troviamo a parlare di Boston e di Cape Cod. E' qui che ci sentiamo a casa, è qui che abbiamo trovato grandissime persone che hanno impiegato non più di due-tre secondi a diventare parte importante della nostra vita, è qui che è cresciuto Mark, non solo un grandissimissimo amico, ma colui che ci ha "americanizzati" e resi quello che siamo. Si, sì... è tutta colpa sua! Boston e Cape Cod sono sostanzialmente "casa": abbiamo speso cinque giorni nel 2012, altrettanti nel 2013 e anche la prossima estate faremo tappa prima di volare a Yellowstone. Vi porteremo in questi luoghi incantevoli diversamente da come abbiamo fatto per gli altri trip, non sarà un diario di viaggio ma una sorta di "mini guida" in un'unica puntata per chi volesse intraprendere un trip, ovviamente una guida molto personale, ovvero legata alle nostre esperienze, a quello che ci ha colpito e, perchè no, anche alle prime volte. LET'S GO!

If when we talk about the U.S. the risk is to be blatantly biased, we let you to imagine what can happen when we are talking about Boston and Cape Cod. Here we feel at home, here there are a lot of people that allow us to feel like at home, here our dear friend, Mark, grew up... Mark "americanized" us, it's all his fault!!! Boston and Cape Cod are essentially "home": we spent five days in 2012, as many in 2013 and again next summer we'll stop before flying to Yellowstone. We will take you in these enchanting places differently from the way we did for the other trip, it will not be a day by day diary, but a sort of " mini-guide " in a single episode for those wishing to visit this places, of course, a very personal guide: LET'S GO !

Geograficamente siamo nel nord est degli Stati Uniti, non lontanissimo dal confine canadese ma anche a sole tre ore e mezza d'auto da New York, non a caso la città che molto spesso viene unita ad un trip che comprenda il Massachusets. Boston è ovviamente la città pricinpale. E quando pensi a lei, la colleghi immediatamente al "tea party", ma anche alla Mayflower, la nave dei padri pellegrini che per la prima volta arrivò, dalla Gran Bretagna, negli Stati Uniti (a Plymouth, una ventina di minuti a sud di Boston, potrete ammirarla). Qui l'influenza inglese è evidente, non è un caso infatti che molte delle città abbiano nomi british. Boston è probabilmente la più europea delle città americane, tutto sommato "piccolina" per essere una città di caratura mondiale. In un paio di giorni, se non siete dei perdi-tempo, potreste tranquillamente girarla in lungo e in largo...

It's in th north east of the US, not so far from the canadian borderline, but it is also 3,5 hours drive to NY, for this reason when you plan a trip in that area you could add Massachissets with its main city: Boston. When you think about Boston, you connect it to the "tea Party", and also to the Mayflower, the boat of the Pilgrims who for the first time arrived from Great Britain in the US (to Plymouth, almost 20 minutes far from Boston). Here the British influence is evident, it is not a coincidence that many of the towns have British names. Boston is probably the most European of American cities and, even if it is a big city, it's not as big as other famous american cities. In a couple of days (if you don't waste your time), you could easily visit it...
