Avventure, disavventure e...consigli - adventure, misadventure and... tips (part 2)

Proseguiamo con i nostri "consigli di viaggio" american style che, come abbiamo già detto, racconteremo a modo nostro, ovvero basandoci sulle tante disavventure di cui siamo stati spesso protagonisti.

Let's continue with our american style "travel tips". As we have already said, we'll tell them in our own way, starting from all the misadventures and all the weird situations occurred to us in our american trips...

AUTO/CAR
Non si può prescindere da un'auto a noleggio se si ha in programma un "on the road". Alamo, Hertz, dollar...sono diverse le compagnie di autonoleggio presenti sul territorio americano e, almeno le più famose, non dovrebbero deludere le vostre attese. Solitamente l'assicurazione è già compresa nel momento in cui procederete con l'acquisto on-line del pacchetto, ma ci sarà sicuramente qualche venditore che al momento del ritiro proverà a vendervi altri pacchetti supplementari. Più ne avete, più siete coperti...ma ovviamente più spendete. Su questo delicato argomento non vogliamo influenzarvi, invece vogliamo darvi qualche suggerimento riguardo ad altri aspetti...

If you are planning an on the road you have to rent a car. Alamo, Hertz, dollar ... there are several good car rental companies on the American territory and the most famous of them, should not disappoint your expectations. Usually the insurance is already included when you proceed with the online purchase of the package, but there will certainly be some salesman ready to sell you additional insurances when you pick up the car. The more you have, the more you're covered ... but obviously you have to spend much more money. We do not want to influence you, we just want to give you some suggestions about other aspects ...

- la miglior combinazione di rifornimento, almeno in base alle nostre esperienze, è la "vuoto/vuoto". Ovvero ritirare la vettura con serbatoio vuoto e riconsegnarla nelle stesse condizioni. Questo perchè il pieno di benzina presso le concessionarie di autonoleggio è ben più caro rispetto al classico benzinaio. E la benzina, negli Stati Uniti, costa pochissimo (noi abbiam speso 200 euro per 5mila chilometri lo scorso anno).

-  The best combination of refueling, at least according to our experiences, is the "empty / empty" one. It means thatn you pick up the car with empty tank and return it in the same conditions. - ricordatevi, nel momento in cui state per noleggiare l'auto, che se la vostra intenzione è quella di ritirare l'auto in un ipotetico punto "a" e riconsegnarla nel punto "b" pagherete una tassa molto alta, da 100 a 500 dollari, chiamata "drop off" o "one way". California e Nevada sono escluse, per cui qui non dovrete pagare nulla. Sempre in questi due stati, anche la seconda guida è gratuita.

- Remember that, while you are going to rent a car, if your intention is to pick up the car in a place that we call "a" and return it in anothe place ("b") you'll pay a very high tax, from 100 to 500 dollars, called "drop off" or "one way". California and Nevada are not involved, so you won't have to pay. In these two states even the second driver is free of charge.

- se siete in una grande città ricordatevi, ove disponibile, di utilizzare la "car pool", una corsia preferenziale se sul veicolo vi sono due o più persone, che vi consentirà di battere il traffico. Noi, a Los Angeles, nel nostro primo impatto con gli States, non ci siamo accorti subito subito di questa opzione e ancora oggi lo rimpiangiamo...

- If you are in big city, remember to use the "car pool" if available, a fast track for vehicle with two or more people. You'll beat the traffic! In Los Angeles (it was our first trip) we didn't immediately notice this option and still regret it...

- In molti incroci con semaforo, è consentita la svolta a destra anche a semaforo rosso qualora ovviamente la strada fosse libera. Solitamente un cartello al centro di esso vi segnalerà se questa operazione non sia consentita. Ma se non vi fidate, non correte inutili rischi: difficilmente un americano suonerà il clacson e vi metterà pressione. Sui limiti di velocità invece non si scherza...

- In many intersections with traffic lights, is allowed to turn right even with the red light, you've just to pay attention. Usually a sign in the middle of the intersection will point out if this operation is not permitted. But if you don't feel safe, do not take unnecessary risks: an American hardly uses the horn.

- Non dimenticate, ovunque voi siate, di controllare quali siano le "scenic bways" dello stato che state per visitare. Si tratta di strade panoramiche che, molto spesso, necessitano di una piccola deviazione dalla "main road", ma che vi permetteranno di ammirare paesaggi incredibili. Queste scenic bways, sono segnalate su internet (http://scenicbyways.info/): non perdete assolutamente questa possibilità...

- Do not forget, wherever you are, to check on the internet all the "scenic bways" of the state you are about to visit. They are scenic roads that very often require a small deviation from the "main road", but they will allow you to enjoy amazing scenery. These scenic bways are reported on the internet (http://scenicbyways.info/): absolutely don't miss this opportunity ...
