It's the end of our "mini trip" around the most famous states of the west. New Mexico is not as visited as the famous California, Arizona and Utah beacuse it's far from the traditional routes, but the state of "Breaking Bad", the famous tv series, is one the most fascinating of the entire states even if it's one of the poorest (economically). In our special list New Mexico deserves and a special place, and if you are a fan of the "On the Road", you will immediately realize the reason why New Mexico is beautiful. You can't simply find a sky like this elsewhere.
Ne rimarrete subito affascinati e non è un caso che "nickname" dello stato dalla forte influenza messicana sia "Land of Enchantment". Già, è davvero impossibile non innamorarsene. Anche qui stilare la nostra personale top 10 non è stato facile perchè ce n'è davvero per tutti i gusti: dal deserto alla montagna, dalla mitica Santa Fe alle cittadine con qualche anima (anche lungo la route 66), dagli indiani ai cowboy, dalle sabbie di gesso delle White Sands alla misteriosa Roswell, da Billy the Kid al Turquoise Trail. Ah e ovviamente il cibo. Qua troverete il miglior tex-mex al di fuori dal Messico ed il chili verde del New Mexico è un qualcosa di clamoroso...
The nickname of the state, where mexican influence is very important, is "Land of Enchantment". Yes, it's really impossible not to fall in love with it. Drawing our personal top 10 is not easy because there's something for everyone: from the desert to the mountains, from the legendary Santa Fe to the towns with few people (also along the Route 66), from, Indians to cowboys, from the White Sands to the mysterious Roswell, from Billy the Kid to the Turquoise Trail. Well, and of course the food. Here you will find the best "tex-mex" cuisine outside Mexico and New Mexico green chili is something sensational ...
WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT
La "Land of Enchantment" per eccellenza. Se su ogni targa c'è questa frase, se quando state per entrare nello stato il classico cartello ve lo ricorderà, il White Sands National Monument è uno dei motivi. Pagate l'irrisorio costo d'ingresso (3 dollari), noleggiate il mini slittino e con la vostra auto entrate in un mondo incantevole, fatto di una finissima sabbia bianca (di gesso), spettacolare anche e soprattutto soprattutto al tramonto. Delle White Sands abbiamo detto sostanzialmente tutto e conoscerete ormai la grande ammirazione che nutriamo per questo incredibile spettacolo della natura. Le White Sands sono posizionate a centro sud dello stato, non lontano dal confine con il Texas.
The "Land of Enchantment" is here. If you find this sentence on each plate, if when you are about to enter the state you'll read this, the White Sands National Monument is one of the reasons. Pay the entry fee ($ 3) and with your car go into a charming world, made of a fine white sand, amazing especially at sunset. CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD
Il treno a vapore panoramico probabilmente più bello al mondo. Questa splendida ferrovia, costruita nel 1880, collega le montagne rocciose del Colorado al west, all'interno di un paesaggio naturale incredibile ed il solito cielo del New Mexico. E quando scenderete dal treno, in quel di Chama, cercate il primo saloon e bevete una birra con i cowboys del posto. Con sottofondo possibilmente John Denver, nativo proprio del New Mexico. Come direbbe qualcuno, "what else?"
The Cumbres and Toltec narrow gauge steam heritage railroad runs between Chama (New Mexico) and Antonito (Colorado) in the rocky mountians and under the beautiful sky of New Mexico. This railroad, built in 1880 is very unique. When you get off the train, look for a saloon and drink a beer with locals cowboys while listening John Denver, the famous singer born in New Mexico.
ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALOON FIESTA
Tagliata in due dalla Route 66, Albuquerque è la città più grande ed importante dell'intero stato del New Mexico. C'è un giorno in cui la città di Walter White di Breaking Bad diventa incredibile, perchè proprio tra le sue mura si sviluppa l'evento più fotografato al mondo, l'Albuquerque International Baloon Fiesta (quest'anno si terrà dal 3 all'11 di ottobre). Oltre 750 mongolfiere, di diverse dimensioni e colori, s'innalzano nel cielo più bello del mondo dando vita ad uno spettacolo con pochissimi eguali.
Albuquerque is the largest city and most important of the entire state of New Mexico. The city of Walter White of Breaking Bad becomes incredible every year (in 2015, from the 3rd to 11th) where the most potographed event takes place: the Albuquerque International Baloon Fiesta. Over 750 balloons of different sizes and colors, rise in the most beautiful sky in the world, giving life to a show with very few equals. And when you are in Albuquerque, don't forget the route 66...
SANTA FE'
Uno dei luoghi più trendy d'america e sicuramente uno dei dieci-quindici posti dove vivere. Sono tanti i Newyorchesi che, stufi dei ritmi della grande mela, hanno scelto Santa Fe e l'hanno resa una delle città più affascinanti d'America. Qui c'è l'edificio pubblico più vecchio del paese (il palazzo dei governatori, 1800) e soprattutto ci sono edifici in stile adobe che la rendono davvero unica.
One of the trendiest places in America, and certainly one of the ten to fifteen places where you should live. There are many New Yorkers who, annoyed by the Big Apple mess, have chosen Santa Fe and enjoyed one of the most fascinating cities in the States. Here there is the oldest public building in the country (the Palace of the Governors, 1800) and especially there are adobe-style buildings that make Santa fe truly unique.
ROSWELL
8 luglio 1947. Un oggetto volante non identificato si schianta in un ranch distante 30km dalla città di Roswell, 300 km a sud di Albuquerque. La verità non si sa, ma se mai gli alieni ci hanno fatto visita, il giorno è proprio quello e la città è proprio Roswell (incidente di Roswell). Se siete appassionati di ufologia questo è il vostro posto ed il museo situato proprio nel cuore della città soddisferà tutte le vostre curiosità.

SANDIA PEAK SKI & TRAMWAY
Se non soffrite di vertigini, salite a bordo della funivia che vi porterà in cima ai monti Sandia. Siamo non lontano da Albuquerque ed il Sandia Peak (la più lunga funivia del nord america) rappresenterà una grande avventura ed il panorama dall'alto varrà il prezzo del biglietto...
If you do not suffer from vertigo, take the tram that takes you up to the Sandia Peak. We are not far from Albuquerque and the Sandia Peak (the longest cable car of North America) will be a great adventure and the view from the top will be amazing.
LOS ALAMOS ED I PUEBLOS
Cittadina a nord di Santa Fe, Los Alamos famosa per il suo National Laboratory. Qui, infatti, è stata prodotta e testata la prima bomba atomica (1945). Una visita al muso presente in città è un "must", così come ai "pueblos", i villaggi indiani. Ce ne sono 19 ed il più famoso è sicuramente quello di Taos, nord est di Santa Fe.
Located north of Santa Fe, Los Alamos is famous for its National Laboratory. Here, in fact, has been produced and tested the first atomic bomb (1945). A stop at the museum is a "must" and even at the pueblos, the indian villages. There 19 pueblos in New Mexico and the most famous is definitely Taos, north east of Santa Fe.
FOUR CORNERS NATIONAL MONUMENT
Sì, lo sappiamo, la scelta dei Four Corners sarebbe potuta ricadere anche quando abbiamo descritto sia lo Utah che l'Arizona. Perchè il New Mexico? Semplicemente perchè quando abbiam visitato l'unico luogo nel continente americano in cui quattro stati s'incontrano (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah e Colorado) stavamo provenendo dal New Mexico appunto. Un luogo come un altro direte voi. E invece no. E ve ne accorgerete dalla fila di persone che attendono il loro turno (dopo aver pagato il biglietto di entrata) e la possibilità di essere immortalati con un piede in Arizona e l'altro magari in Colorado. Non saran le White Sands e neppure la vicina Monument Valley, ma anche questa va catalogata tra le esperienze a suo modo uniche!
Yes, we know that. Why didn't we put the four corners national monument into the Utah ora Arizona top 10? Why New Mexico? Simply because we visited it coming from New Mexico! This is the only place where four states meet each other (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado). A place as any other you would say. No, it doesn't. And you'll realize that when you see a lot of people waiting (in line) for their turn. You can put a foot in Arizona and the other one in Colorado. Isn't it amazing?
TURQUOISE TRAIL NATIONAL SCENIC BWAY
Se vi state dirigendo verso Santa Fe da Albuquerque (o al contrario) la vostra strada non dovrà essere la (più veloce) Interstate. Scegliete la scenografica Turquoise Trail, la via del turchese, che vi porterà all'interno di piccoli villaggi dal sapore unico. Tijeras, Cedar Crest, San Marcos, ma soprattutto Madrid, Cerrillos e Golden. Cittadine di chiaro stampo indiano e legate indelebilmente al vecchio west: visitate i vari negozietti di souvenir ed immergetevi in un mondo lontano anni luce non solo dal nostro, ma anche dalle vicine città di Albuquerque e Santa Fe, non distanti una dall'altra.
If you are driving from Albuquerque to Santa Fe (or vice versa) don't follow the Interstate, choose the scenic Turquoise Trail which will take you along small villages like Tijeras, Cedar Crest, San Marcos, but especially Madrid, Cerrillos and Golden. Indian towns clearly linked to the old west: visit the various souvenir shops and dive into a world far away not only from our own cities, but even from the neighboring cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
CARLSBAD CAVERN NATIONAL PARK
Caverne ma non solo, anche 16 specie di pipistrelli abitano questi luoghi, nel sud est dello stato. Fatevi coinvolgere dal ranger e scendete nell'incredibile mondo sotterraneo delle Carlsbad Cavern, Potete scegliere se farlo tramite il percorso naturale (consigliato) o con l'ausilio di un ascensore.
Not only caverns, even 16 specis of bats. It's south-east of New Mexico, close to the borderline with Texas. Get involved by the ranger and visit the incredible underground world of Carlsbad Cavern, You can choose to do it through the natural path (recommended) or with the help of a elevator.
