Che il "miglior amico" della prima parte di viaggio sia il fiume Hudson ormai l'avevate intuito, ma nei prossimi giorni ad alternarsi con la valle del fiume più famoso dello stato di New York, ci sarà un'area altrettanto famosa, le Catskill Mountains, una piccola parte dei più grandi monti Appalachi, comunemente note come "le montagne dei newyorkesi" per via della vicinanza con la Grande Mela. Ed il motivo per il quale siamo così amate è molto semplice: migliaia di chilometri di diversi sentieri escursionistici e per mountain bike si alternano ad alcune delle migliori stazioni sciistiche americane, opportunità per l'arrampicata su roccia si alternano invece a laghi, stagni e ruscelli dove praticare canoa, nuoto, pesca e molto altro ancora. No, non è un luogo qualunque, tanto che nel 1894 furono apportati emendamenti alla Costituzione dello stato di New York in modo da garantire che migliaia di ettari di territorio “restassero per sempre foreste selvagge”. E poi le cittadine, quelle a misura d'uomo dove entrare a contatto con le comunità locali, che sono soprattutto discendenti olandesi (qui sono ovunque) e tante, anzi tantissime comunità ebraiche sparse per tutto l'ovest del fiume Hudson.
As you may have guessed by now widely, my "best friend" during the first part of the road trip is the Hudson River, but over the next few days, the New York State's most famous river will alternate with an equally famous area, the Catskill Mountains, a small part of the larger Appalachian Mountains, commonly known as "New Yorkers' mountains" because of their proximity to the Big Apple. And the reason why those mountains are so beloved is very simple: thousands of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails alternate with some of America's best ski resorts, opportunities for rock climbing alternate with lakes, ponds and streams where you can canoe, swim, go fishing and much more. No, this is not just another place, so much so that in 1894 amendments were made to the New York State Constitution so as to ensure that thousands of acres of land "would forever remain wilderness forests." And then the small towns, the people-friendly ones where you can get in touch with the local communities, which are mostly Dutch descendants (they are everywhere here) and many, many Jewish communities scattered throughout the west side of the Hudson River.

MINNEWASKA STATE PARK PRESERVE , LA NATURA AL SUO MEGLIO
L'avventura nelle Catskill non poteva non cominciare con la natura e con il parco statale più famoso dell'intera area, il Minnewaska State Park Preserve, a cui ho dedicato buona parte della giornata visitando prima il versante sud e poi quello nord, distanti circa 30 minuti di auto. Il parco si trova sulla spettacolare cresta della montagna Shawangunk, che si erge a oltre 2000 piedi sul livello del mare ed è circondato da cascate, tre laghi cristallini, fitte foreste di latifoglie, che regalano viste davvero impareggiabili. E tutto questo in un'ora e mezza di auto da New York City...
MINNEWASKA STATE PARK PRESERVE , NATURE AT ITS BEST
The adventure in the Catskills could not but begin with nature and the most famous state park in the entire area, Minnewaska State Park Preserve, where i spent a good part of the day, visiting first the south and then the north side. The park is located on the spectacular Shawangunk Mountain ridge, which rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by waterfalls, three crystal-clear lakes, and dense deciduous forests that provide truly unparalleled views. And all this within an hour and a half's drive from New York City....
La parte più affascinante del versante sud, ed anche la più gettonata, è il Sam’s Point Preserve – Ice Cave - Verkeerderkill Falls Trail, il sentiero decisamente più famoso del parco. Ecco, proprio per la sua ormai sempre crescente fama, il dipartimento degli State Park ha istituito un sistema di prenotazioni (da effettuare online) per il periodo estivo. Ricordatevi dunque che, oltre a pagare la "fee" di ingresso al parco (10 dollari a vettura), dovrete anche prenotare gratuitamente l'escursione sul sito ufficiale (http://newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com) se la vostra intenzione è quella di visitare il parco nei week end o nei giorni festivi.
The most fascinating part of the south side, and also the most popular, is the Sam's Point Preserve - Ice Cave - Verkeerderkill Falls Trail, the decidedly most famous trail in the park. Here, precisely because of its now ever-increasing fame, the State Parks Department has set up a reservation system (online) for the summer period. So remember that in addition to paying the park entrance fee ($10 per car), you will also have to reserve a spot for the hike for free on the official website (http://newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com) if your intention is to visit the park on weekends or holidays.
Io sono stato molto fortunato perchè, non essendo a conoscenza del sistema di prenotazioni, ho potuto accedere al parco solamente alle tantissime disdette pervenute a causa della... pioggia. Già, perchè buona parte del trail l'ho percorso sotto un bell'acquazzone, motivo per il quale ho poi scelto di non percorrere l'intero loop di 7 miglia, bensì di rientrare dopo aver visitato le Verkeerderkill Falls.
I was very lucky because, as I was not aware of the reservation system, I could get a pass for the park athanks to the many cancellations that came in because of the rain. That's right: i hiked half of the trail under the rain, which is why I then chose not to hike the entire 7-mile loop, but i got back after visiting Verkeerderkill Falls.
Il sentiero, infatti, è una sorta di tre percorsi in uno, il primo dei quali si chiama Sam’s Point Preserve, il cui nome deriva da un racconto popolare in cui un noto colono spagnolo di nome Samuel Gonzales, inseguito dagli indiani, saltò giù dalla scogliera per evitare la cattura e miracolosamente sopravvisse aiutato dagli alberi che ne attutirono la caduta. Nelle giornate limpide, da qui si può anche vedere in lontananza la città di New York.
In fact, the trail is a kind of three trails in one, the first of which is called Sam's Point Preserve, named after a folk tale in which a well-known Spanish settler named Samuel Gonzales, chased by Indians, jumped off the cliff to avoid capture and miraculously survived aided by trees that broke his fall. From here, on a clear day, you can also see New York City in the distance...
La prima parte del sentiero, quella che conduce a Sam's Point, è semplice (segue una mulattiera) ma è in salita: da qui ci si addentra nella foresta, prima per raggiungere Ice Cave e poi le Verkeerderkill Falls. Per raggiungere le Ice Cave dovrete deviare leggermente dalla Loop Road, che se percorsa interamente vi porterà a completare il sentiero attraversando (con un'ulteriore piccola deviazione) anche il Maratanza Lake.
The first part of the trail, the one leading to Sam's Point, is easy (it follows a mule track) but it is uphill: from here, the trail ventures into the forest, first to reach Ice Cave and then the Verkeerderkill Falls. To get to the Ice Cave, hikers have to deviate slightly from the Loop Road, which if traveled in its entirety let people comple the loop trail by crossing (with an additional small detour) Maratanza Lake as well.
NEXT STOP: Cragsmoor Stone Church (2.2 miles) - Napanoch (9.3 miles) - Awosting Falls (9 miles)
Distante solo una manciata di miglia dal parking lot del Sam's point trail, c'è una delle chiese più fotografate dello stato, la Cragsmoor Stone Church (1895), famosa non tanto per l'edificio in sè, ma per la vista che regala sulla vallata e sulle Catskill Mountain. Non sono stato, tuttavia, molto fortunato in questo viaggio in tema di chiese perchè le più scenografiche non sono sostanzialmente mai riuscito a visitarle perchè erano in corso degli eventi (in questo caso un matrimonio). Poco male però, perchè la Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway che starete percorrendo per raggiungere il versante nord del parco,varrà da sola il prezzo del biglietto. In particolare il tratto che ho percorso dopo aver lasciato il parco, la Southern Route, che copre il lato sud-ovest della Byway sino a Napanoch. Da questa piccola cittadina è davvero un attimo raggiungere il versante sud del parco, e quindi sia il lago Minnewaska che le Awosting Falls. Soprattutto le cascate sono davvero molto belle e facilmente raggiungibili con una passeggiata di circa 5 minuti, che conduce prima alla parte superiore delle cascate (non così scenografica) e poi alla base, dove invece potrete ammirarle in tutto il loro splendore.
Only a handful of miles away from the Sam's point trail parking lot, there is one of the most photographed churches in New York State, Cragsmoor Stone Church (1895), famous not only for the building itself but for also for the amazing view of the valley and the Catskill Mountains. However, i was not very lucky on this church-themed trip: i just couldn't visit the most scenic ones due to events (wedding, in this case). Never mind. The Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway that i had to drive to get to the north side of the park was... really scenic! Particularly the section I traveled after leaving the park, the Southern Route, which covers the southwest side of the Byway all the way to Napanoch. From this small town, it is really a snap to get to the southern side of the park, and then both Lake Minnewaska and Awosting Falls. Especially the falls are really very beautiful and easily reached by a walk of about 5 minutes, which leads first to the upper part of the falls (not so scenic) and then to the base, where visitors can admire them in all their glory.
Una volta ritornati al parcheggio delle Awosting Falls, recuperate la vostra vettura e percorrete la strada che attraversa il parco e raggiungete dopo qualche centinaio di metri uno dei tre enormi parcheggi riservati al Minnewaska Lake. E ricordatevi che se avrete ottenuto il pass per il versante sud, non dovrete pagare nuovamente la "fee" d'ingresso. Il percorso ad anello di 1,9 miglia che costeggia il lago è il modo migliore per terminare l'avventura al Minnewaska State Park Preserve.
Once back to the Awosting Falls parking lot, get your car and drive down the road through the park and reach one of the three huge parking lots reserved for Minnewaska Lake. And remember that if you have paid the 10 dollars fee for the south side of the park, you won't have to pay the entrance fee again. The 1.9-mile loop trail that skirts the lake is the best way to end your adventure at Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

NEW PALTZ, LA PERLA DELL'HUDSON
Se c'è una città che val davvero la pena visitare nella valle dell'Hudson questa è proprio New Paltz, un vivace villaggio che ospita una scena musicale interessante, ristoranti a km 0, boutique e caffè. Io ho scelto di spendere due notti in questa area, anche se il pernottamento avviene di un bellissimo Bed and Breakfast immerso nella natura, sul versante est del fiume Hudson. Nella prima giornata ho scelto di spendere del tempo al Water Street Market, una piccola ma carina via pedonale che vanta oltre 20 negozi d'antiquariato, artigianato e moda, oltre a cafè e luoghi di ristoro.
NEW PALTZ, THE PEARL OF THE HUDSON
If there is aplace that really worth visiting in the Hudson Valley, well... it is New Paltz, a vibrant village that is home to an interesting music scene, farm to table restaurants, boutiques and cafes. I chose to spend two nights in this area, in the nearby Hyde Park, home of an amazing Bed and Breakfast nestled in nature on the east side of the Hudson River. On the first day, I chose to spend some quality time at the Water Street Market, a small but cute pedestrian street that boasts more than 20 antique, craft and fashion stores, as well as cafes and eateries.
Il Water Street Market si trova al termine di downtown, lungo main street, all'angolo con la Historic Higuenot Street di cui parlerò nel prossimo post. Se non doveste riuscire a pernottare a New Paltz (i prezzi in tutto il New York State sono decisamente alti), non preoccupatevi, perchè poco distante (al di là del fiume Hudson) troverete la sua cittadina gemella, Poughkeepsie, la "Queen City of the Hudson", dove la tecnologia (qui ha sede l'Ibm) si alterna a 22 bellissimi parchi verdi ed un'università che la rende decisamente giovanile.
The Water Street Market is located at the end of downtown, along main street, at the corner with the Historic Higuenot Street, of which i will speak the next post. If you can't spend the night in New Paltz (prices throughout New York State are decidedly high), don't worry, because not far away (across the Hudson River) there's another tiny town, Poughkeepsie, the "Queen City of the Hudson," where technology (Ibm is headquartered here) alternates with 22 beautiful green parks and a university that makes it distinctly youthful.
