In un on the road la giornata condizionata in maniera negativa dalla pioggia è sempre dietro l'angolo. Dopo tutto, si sa, si possono controllare tante cose, ma non Giove Pluvio... E stavolta è sembrato quasi essere il Vermont a farlo apposta, perchè la pioggia non mi ha quasi mai lasciato tregua durante tutta la giornata, quasi come se non volesse che lo lasciassi dopo così poco tempo per tornare nello stato di New York. C'è però Lake Placid, la casa olimpica degli Stati Uniti, che mi aspetta ed una tappa piuttosto lunghina per raggiungerla. Per questo che non c'è neppure tempo per salutare il "Green Mountain Sate" come meriterebbe, e neppure lo splendido bed and breakfast delle ultime notti, perchè con l'auto sono già in direzione Fort Ticonderoga, distante quasi 50 miglia da Killington...
The day adversely affected by rain is always just around the corner during an on the road. After all, you know, you can control a lot of things, but not Jupiter Pluvio.... And, this time, it almost seemed to be Vermont doing it on purpose, because the rain has hardly given me a break throughout the day, like it didn't want me to leave it after such a short time to return to New York State. However, there's Lake Placid, the Olympic home of the United States, that's waiting for me and a rather long trip to get there. That is why there is not even time to say goodbye to the "Green Mountain Sate" as it deserves, nor to the splendid bed and breakfast where i spent the last few nights. i'm already I am already in the car heading in the direction of Fort Ticonderoga, almost 50 miles away from Killington...
NEXT STOP: Fort Ticonderoga (49 miles)
Per la maggior parte del lungo confine tra Vermont e New York State, è sempre l'acqua a definire la separazione dei due stati. Ecco perchè ho scelto il modo più scenografico possibile per tornare nello stato di New York, ovvero recandomi a Larrabees Point - Fort Ticonderoga, dove uno dei più antichi traghetti degli Usa (1759) mi condurrà nuovamente nel New York State.
For most of the long border between Vermont and New York State, it is always the water that defines the separation of the two states. That is why I chose the most scenic way to return to New York State, which is by going to Larrabees Point - Fort Ticonderoga, where one of the oldest ferries in the U.S. (1759) takes me back to New York State.
Un viaggio di sette minuti (prezzo: 12 dollari a vettura, solo cash) sul lago Champlain vi porta sull'altra sponda dove, dopo aver lasciato il Vermont, ad attendervi c'è la cittadina di Ticonderoga e quindi il New York State.

Ticonderoga è una tranquilla ma interessante cittadina nel cuore degli Adirondacks che per la giornata di oggi mi faranno compagnia. I monti Adirondack rappresentano un quinto della superficie dello Stato di New York, contano ben 4.000 corsi d'acqua e non sono di fatto un'unica catena montuosa unita, ma consistono in molte vette, sia isolate che raggruppate.
Ticonderoga is a quiet but interesting town in the heart of the Adirondacks, one of the most amazing mountain range in the entire United States. The Adirondacks account for one-fifth of the area of New York State, houses as many as 4,000 streams, and are not, in fact, a single unified mountain range, but consist of many peaks, both isolated and grouped.
Ticonderoga è proprio ai piedi di una di queste montagne e vanta un piccolo ma interessante museo (gratuito), il Ticonderoga Heritage Museum & Visitor Center, ospitato all'interno del Percent Thompson Bicentennial Park, nell'ex ufficio della Ticonderoga Pulp & Paper Company (1888). Il museo racconta la storia di Ticonderoga, fatta di cartiere e miniere, ma interessante è anche il piccolo parco che vanta anche una piccola cascata, la Chute Falls.
Ticonderoga is located right at the foot of one of these mountains and boasts a small but interesting (free) museum, the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum & Visitor Center, housed within the Percent Thompson Bicentennial Park, in the former office of the Ticonderoga Pulp & Paper Company (1888). The museum tells the story of Ticonderoga's history of paper mills and mining, but don't forget to visit also the park and the tiny Chute Falls.
Dall'altra parte della strada comincia invece il downtown cittadino, perfetto per un caffè o per una veloce passeggiatina. Il luogo però da non mancare si trova all'uscita della città (ovest), il Windchill Factory, un'autentica istituzione in tutti gli Adirondacks tanto da essere costantemente votato dai newyorchesi come uno dei migliori in tutto lo stato. Qui troverete di tutto, dai panini agli hot dog, dalla pizza alle insalate, ma solitamente è per il gelato (anche soft) che ci si ferma. E ne vale davvero la pena...
NEXT STOP: Lake Placid (69 miles)
The downtown area begins across the street and it's really perfect for a coffee or just for a quick stroll. The place not to be missed, however, is at the city's (west) exit, the Windchill Factory, a true institution in all of the Adirondacks so much so that it is consistently voted by New Yorkers as one of the best in the entire state. Here you'll find everything, from sandwiches to hot dogs, from pizza to salads, but it's usually for ice cream that you stop in. And it's really worth it...
Io ho scelto di dirigermi verso l'ovest del New York State, ma se doveste puntare dritto verso nord e quindi verso il Canada, una delle principali attrazioni si trova proprio una cinquantina di miglia a nord di Ticonderoga: l'Ausable Chasm. Considerato il Grand Canyon dell'est, regala un canyon spettacolare, percorsi naturalistici, possibilità di fare "tubing", rafting e molto altro ancora. La mia meta è invece Lake Placid, la città più famosa di quest'area dello stato di New York. E, anche se la pioggia mi ha impedito di vedere sostanzialmente quasi tutto quello che avevo pianificato di visitare, la città che prende il nome dall'omonimo lago, rimane un luogo da non mancare quando si visita il New York State.
I chose to head to western New York State, but if you were to head straight north and then into Canada, one of the main attractions is located just fifty miles north of Ticonderoga: the Ausable Chasm. Considered the Grand Canyon of the East, it gives visitors a spectacular canyon, nature trails, opportunities for tubing, rafting and much more. However, my goal is Lake Placid, the most famous town in this area of upstate New York. And even though rain prevented me from seeing basically almost everything I had planned to visit, the town named after the lake of the same name remains a must-see when visiting New York State.
Lake Placid è davvero un paradiso per gli amanti degli sport invernali: qui, infatti, si sono tenute ben due edizioni dei giochi olimpici (quelle del 1932 e del 1980) e può vantare il primato, condiviso con con Sankt Moritz (Svizzera) e Innsbruck (Austria), di essere una delle tre località che hanno ospitato per due volte i Giochi olimpici invernali. Vi basterà alzare gli occhi e troverete altissimi trampolini (il Mackenzie Intervale Ski Complex), stadi per il biathlon, lo sci di fondo o per gli eventi sul ghiaccio e, ai piedi del Mt Van Hoevenberg, anche piste per il bob e lo skeleton. E proprio il bob è la disciplina che ho potuto provare e di cui parlerò in apertura del prossimo post.
Lake Placid is truly a paradise for winter sports lovers: in fact, no less than two editions of the Olympic Games were held here (those of 1932 and 1980), and it can boast the record, shared with Sankt Moritz (Switzerland) and Innsbruck (Austria), of being one of the three locations that have twice hosted the Winter Olympic Games. All you have to do is look up and you'll find towering ski jumps (the Mackenzie Intervale Ski Complex), stadiums for biathlon, cross-country skiing or ice events, and, at the foot of Mt Van Hoevenberg, even bobsled and skeleton tracks. And bobsledding is precisely the discipline I was able to try and what i can tell is just... don't miss the next post!
Ma, anche se non siete appassionati di sport, val davvero la pena visitare Lake Placid. Intanto per il suo centro storico, davvero simile a quello delle nostre cittadine montuose, situato sul bordo del Mirror Lake, il lago che si trova tra il Lake Placid e la città appunto. Cominciate allora la vostra visita di Lake Placid proprio da downtown che corre lungo Main Street e poi, se volete, completate il loop del Mirror Lake e sedetevi su una delle tante panchine posizionate sul bordo del lago per ammirare i Monti Adirondacks. Il sentiero è lungo 2.7 miglia.
But, even if you are not a sports fan, it is really worth visiting Lake Placid. In the meantime for its historic center, really similar to that of our european mountain towns, located on the edge of Mirror Lake, the lake that lies between the Lake Placid and the city precisely. So begin your visit to Lake Placid right from downtown that runs along Main Street and then, if you wish, complete the Mirror Lake loop and sit on one of the many benches placed on the edge of the lake to admire the Adirondacks. The trail is 2.7 miles long.
Sia che siate "outdoor lovers", o appassionati di storia, Lake Placid offre davvero tanto, anzi tantissimo. Tra le cose da fare a Lake Placid spicca, oltre al suo bellissimo downtown, sicuramente il John Brown Farm State Historic Site (ingresso gratuito), che comprende la dimora e il luogo di riposo ultimo del leader dell'abolizionismo negli Stati Uniti d'America John Brown (1800 - 1859). La John Brown Farm si trova a Sud del villaggio di Lake Placid, tra la cittadina di North Elba e l'aeroporto, lungo la John Brown Road nel luogo dove l'attivista si trasferì nel 1849 per condurvi gli schiavi liberati ed introdurli all'arte dell'agricoltura. Se siete appassionati di natura vi consiglio invece di percorrere la Adirondack Loj Road, una delle strade più panoramiche e fotografate del Parco degli Adirondack. Quasi 10 miglia di asfalto (a sud di Lake Placid) che conducono al bellissimo Heart Lake e dove troverete tantissime farfalle e falene. Una volta giunti al lago, ad attendervi ci sarà anche uno scenografico e circolare percorso di 2 km (Heart Lake Trail) che consente di ammirare l'Heart Lake da moltissime angolazioni.
WHAT TO SEE IN LAKE PLACID, THE AMERICAN OLYMPIC CITY
Whether you are an outdoor lover, or a history buff, Lake Placid offers so much. Among the things to do in Lake Placid, in addition to its beautiful downtown, don't definitely miss the John Brown Farm State Historic Site (free admission), which includes the home and final resting place of abolitionist leader in the United States of America John Brown (1800 - 1859). The John Brown Farm is located south of the village of Lake Placid, between the town of North Elba and the airport, along the John Brown Road at the site where the activist moved in 1849 to lead freed slaves there and introduce them to the art of farming. If you are a nature lover, however, I recommend the Adirondack Loj Road, one of the most scenic and photographed roads in the Adirondack Park. Almost 10 miles of asphalt (south of Lake Placid) leading to beautiful Heart Lake and where you will find plenty of butterflies and moths. Once at the lake, you can hike a scenic circular 2-mile trail (Heart Lake Trail).
Un'altra attività gettonata è la salita verso Whiteface Mountain, la quinta montagna più alta dello stato di New York. Per farlo, a meno che non vogliate percorrere il faticosissimo trail che conduce in cima, si segue con la propria vettura (ingresso a pagamento: 20 dollari) la Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, che permette di arrivare ai quasi 1500 metri della Whiteface Mountain. In cima troverete ad attendervi il Summit Weather Observatory. La strada non è aperta tutto l'anno e per questo vi consiglio di consultare il sito internet https://whiteface.com/ per avere notizie più aggiornate e dettagliate, anche sulle attività estive ed invernali del Whiteface Mountain. Finita? Macchè. Potrete infatti visitare il parco naturale High Falls Gorge (ingresso: 15.95 dollari, apertura da maggio ad ottobre) per quella che viene definita come "la camminata di mezz'ora che più toglie il fiato in tutti gli Adirondacks". E poi, per chi ama la birra, c'è un mondo da scoprire. Già, perchè tutta l'area è famosa per i mircrobirrifici ed alcuni dei quali producono davvero una birra fantastica. Su tutti vi menziono Ray Brook Brewhouse nella vicina Ray Brook, la Big Slide Brewery & Public House (Lake Placid), la Waterhole Music Lounge lungo Main Street di Saranac Lake, la Blue Line Brewery Pizza & Pub (Saranac Lake), la Lake Placid Pub & Brewery (Lake Placid) e la Great Adirondack Brewing Company sempre a Lake Placid. Molti di questi birrifici offrono anche la cucina, rendendo la vostra esperienza culinaria a Lake Placid davvero imperdibile. E poi c'è lo sport, di cui però parlerò nel prossimo post...
Another popular activity is the ascent to Whiteface Mountain, the fifth highest mountain in New York State. To do this, unless you want to take the very strenuous trail to the top, just follow the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway with your own car (admission fee: $20), which allows visitors to get to the nearly 1,500 feet of Whiteface Mountain. At the top you will find the Summit Weather Observatory waiting for you. The road is not open year-round, so I recommend you check the website https://whiteface.com/ for more up-to-date and detailed information, including on Whiteface Mountain's summer and winter activities. Is it over? Nope. In fact, you can visit the High Falls Gorge Nature Park (admission: $15.95, May through October) for what is described as "the most breathtaking half-hour walk in all the Adirondacks." And then, for those who love beer, there is a world to discover. That's right, because the whole area is famous for mircbreweries and some of them really do make great beers. Out of all of them I would mention Ray Brook Brewhouse in nearby Ray Brook, Big Slide Brewery & Public House (Lake Placid), Waterhole Music Lounge along Main Street in Saranac Lake, Blue Line Brewery Pizza & Pub (Saranac Lake), Lake Placid Pub & Brewery (Lake Placid) and Great Adirondack Brewing Company also in Lake Placid. Many of these breweries also have food making your dining experience in Lake Placid truly not to be missed. And then there is sports, which I will talk about in the next post...
