New York City, Cape Cod and... "The Real America" (day 11)

Dopo una giornata relativamente tranquilla oggi ci aspetta quella che nel ciclismo verrebbe definita come la tappa regina. Più di 700 chilometri separano, infatti, Wall da Cody (Wyoming), destinazione finale di una giornata che si preannuncia lunga, anzi lunghissima...

After a pretty quiet day, today we expect a hard stage. More than 700 kilometers, from Wall to Cody (Wyoming), the final destination of could be very, very long...

Perchè una tappa così lunga? L'indecisione ha regnato sino alla fine... smezzare il viaggio e togliere un giorno a Yellowstone oppure un tappone con la possibilità di vedere il parco più bello d'America con tutta calma? In realtà entrambe le opzioni avrebbero avuto diritto di cittadinanza, perchè se da una parte non abbiamo corso (ma per Yellowstone sarebbero comunque bastati due giorni e mezzo, ovviamente senza perdere nemmeno un secondo e con la possibilità di rilassarci), dall'altra 750 chilometri in un giorno non sono il massimo. La prima sosta è la cittadina western di Deadwood, dove il gioco d'azzardo la fa da padrone. Adesso come nel passato. Proprio come nel vecchio west...

Why so long? It has been a hard decision. We had 2 options: but drive for 750 kilometers today and spend one more day in Yellowstone or split the stage and maybe be in a hurry in Yellowstone. We chose the first option, we don't know if this was the best solutions, ... The first stop is in the western town of Deadwood, the house of gambling in the west. Now as in the past. Just like in the old west ...

Non appena oltrepassiamo il confine del South Dakota e ci immergiamo nuovamente in Wyoming, si prospetta davanti a noi una scelta ardua. Allungare o no il percorso e raggiungere la Devils Tower? Noi non vorremmo perder tempo, anche perchè "Incontri ravvicinati del terzo tipo" (di cui la Devils Tower è protagonista) è un film che non fa per noi... Ma un'allegra famigliola che come noi si era fermata ad effettuare le foto di rito ai cartelli stradali che indicano i confini di stato, ci convince che "s'ha da fare".

As soon as we cross the border of South Dakota and be once again in Wyoming we face a difficult choice. Do or not the Devils Tower? We don't want to waste time, even because "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is not our kind of movie... But we meet a family that recommend us to go there. So, we must go!

Parliamo di terre che hanno avuto e hanno ancora oggi un grande legame con i nativi americani che, mettiamola così sono contenti il giusto di vedere ogni anno 400.000 turisti visitare il monte. La leggenda della tribù indiana dei Lakota racconta che sette bambine, mentre raccoglievano alcuni fiori ai piedi del monte, furono attaccate dagli orsi. Ma il "Grande Spirito" le salvò portandole in cima ed i solchi sui lati della montagna sarebbero le incisioni lasciate dagli artigli degli orsi. Il picco è sacro per Lakota, i Cheyenne ed i Kiowa che considerano un sacrilegio le scalate effettuate da molti turisti.

We are talking about lands that have been influenced by Native American, that are not very happy to see 400.000 tourists every year. The legend of the Lakota Indian tribe says that seven girls, while collecting some flowers at the bottom of the mountain, were attacked by bears. But the "Great Spirit" saved them and the grooves on the sides of the mountain would be the engravings left by the claws of the bears. The peak is sacred to the Lakota, Cheyenne and Kiowa who consider a sacrilege climbing the mountain.

Non osiamo immaginare cosa potrebbero pensare se vedessero le foto che l'artista (l'Ale) ha progettato durante le lunghe ore di viaggio.

We couldn't imagine what they might think if they see the photos that the artist (L'Ale) designed during the long travel. 

Arrivati al National Monument intorno a mezzogiorno ne approfittiamo per pranzare con vista Devils Tower. Un hot dog veloce, qualche foto di rito e... riusciamo anche risparmiare i 15 dollari (il costo dell'entrata al parco), fermandoci sotto il monte.

We arrive at the National Monument at noon. It's the perfect time for a lunch with a Devils Tower view. A small hot dog, some pictures and we even save $ 15 (the cost of entry to the park), stopping under the mountain. 

Ripartiamo e, come per tutto il resto della giornata, ci faranno compagnia le montagne e le praterie del Wyoming...

It's time to leave and for all the day mountains, hills and prairies are in the background... 

.... sino a Cody, dove arriviamo per le 18, giusto in tempo per assistere allo spettacolo dei cowboy all'Irma Saloon. Decisamente troppo turistico e quindi deludente.

... till Cody. It's 6pm, just in time to witness the cowboy's show at the Irma Saloon. Definitely too touristy and therefore disappointing. 

A non deludere sarà la cena a base di carne, proprio di fronte all'Irma Saloon.

 We don't like the show but we like the dinner in a restaurant close to the Irma Saloon.

Sono le 20 e si sta avvicinando il clou di giornata. Già, perchè ci siamo fermati a Cody per un solo motivo, il rodeo che ogni sera, in estate, riempie le serate della piccola cittadina del Wyoming.

It's 8 pm and the main part of the day is coming. Yes, because we have stopped in Cody just because of the rodeo that every night in the summer is the main event in this small town in Wyoming. 

Lo stadio richiama quasi un migliaio di spettatori, la maggior parte dei quali turisti. Ovviamente quando ci sono gli americani di mezzo e si parla di "entertainment" non si può rimanere delusi.
Musica, inno nazionale, cowgirl con le bandiere americane... Ci siamo: il nostro primo rodeo!

A thousand people are in the stadium, most of them are tourists, Of course when we are talking about americans and entertainment the show doesn't let you down. Music, national anthem, cowgirl with american flags... here we are: our first rodeo!

Si respira davvero profumo di west. Il pubblico è entusiasta, mentre i cowboy si danno battaglia. Già, perchè qui si fa sul serio e le gare sono davvero sentite. Prima devono resistere 8 secondi sul cavallo mentre tenta di disarcionarli, poi devono rincorrere e prendere al lazo il vitellino. Gara quest'ultima a cui partecipano anche le cowgirl

we are breathing west. The audience is excited, while cowboys are struggling. Well, every cowboy and every cowgirls want to win this race. 

Anche i bambini vengono chiamati a rincorrere e catturare un vitellino e non c'è neppure bisogno di dire chi abbia vinto. Il vitellino ovviamente...

Even children are called to chase and catch a calf but of course the animal wins!

In un amen arrivano le 10. Siamo stanchi, stanchissimi... ma sempre più immersi nel west americano!

It's 10pm. We are really tired but really immersed in the american West.
