2012 trip: New York City, Washington D.C. and Florida (day 1, New York City)

CAPE COD - NEW YORK - WASHINGTON - ORLANDO - NAPLES - EVERGLADES - ISLA MORADA - KEY WEST - MIAMI

Estate 2012, obiettivo East Coast.

Summer 2012, the East Coast. The second time in the United States took us to visit the east coast, starting from the usual five days (the first ever for us) in Cape Cod before heading with the "real " trip : New York City , Washington DC and Florida. All this with our super friends Chiara and Raffaele, that joined us in the Big Apple for 14 days in stars and stripes. We planned three flights (milan- boston , washington dc- Orlando, Miami - Milan ), two bus journeys (using the greyhound company that offers affordable costs, $ 17 for one way) 3 and a half hours each ( Boston - New York, New York Washington) and rental car in Orlando and return to Miami. In short, a lot of things to do and see and especially in New York, no time to lose. After the classic donut from Dunkin Donuts we are already on track ...

Noi avevamo prenotato l'escursione dall'Italia (http://www.statueoflibertytickets.com/, costo 20 dollari).

We split the city into areas: we start with the south of Manhattan and at 8:30 am we are already at the ticket office to catch the ferry that will take us first to the Statue of Liberty and then to Ellis Island. We had booked the excursion from Italy ( http://www.statueoflibertytickets.com/, cost $ 20 ) .

We stop at the small island (liberty island) to visit the statue of liberty...

some pictures with our friends...

and then we go to Ellis Island, a truly mystical place. It 's a small island that, from 1892 to 1954 , the year of its closure, was the main point of entry for immigrants who landed in the United States.

Visitiamo il luogo "sacro" dell'immigrazione americana...

We visit the "sacred" place of American immigration ...

There are a lot of italian names...

From Ellis Island you can also enjoy the Manhattan skyline ...

Rientrati a Manhattan risaliamo prima verso Wall Street...

Back in Manhattan we go first to Wall Street ...

ed il suo famoso toro...

and its famous bull...

and then to the World Trade Center, a place that needs no explanations. Despite everything is closed and fenced because of the anniversary, the emotion is strong...

Fidatevi.

we listen to a speech of a man who was cleaning one of the commemorative plaques. Imagine the noise and confusion that reigns in New York and forget about it : in that place everything is different.

It starts raining, perhaps it is not a coincidence ... We decide to take refuge in a mall and  discover the "21st century store"  the best place to do shopping in the entire world, where you can buy a guess shoes for $ 9 or a Lacoste for 20 dollars. Finally it stops raining and we decide to walk to Brooklyn Bridge.

It's evening and we are tired. We decide, after quick visit to the Madison Square Garden...

to have dinner in a pub, where Marco discovers what it means when the chicken wings are hot ... Hot means hot after two chicken wings must abdicate with greetings ... Lesson learned !

2012 trip: New York City, Washington D.C. and Florida (Day 2, New York City

The second day in the Big Apple opens with three neighborhoods that aren't so nice: Soho, Chinatown and Little Italy. Especially the last two areas , after seeing the San Francisco'ones, are a substantial waste of time. The fact is that in an hour we have already visited the three districts and are ready to take the subway ...

...direction Madison Square Park, for our debut at Shake Shack.

We spend the afternoon having shopping in the 5th Ave., maybe the most famous shopping street of the world. As NBA fan we spend some time in the NBA store where l'Ale starts singing "U remind me" with the shop's guard and where Marco buys a lot of t-shirts (Rondo, Bryant and Durant for Ale). In the end we go to Times Square, including long visits to strange shops, especially the M & M's one,

Solo noi....

They cost so much, so we decide to buy them outside the shop at the hot dog stand.

 Ci rituffiamo in Times Square...

In Times Square...

despite the rain is full of people.

Also today we walked a lot, so we decide to have dinner in hotel, l'Ale take away sushi and pizza for the others. After dinner we go out for another walk and take some picture with some "strange things" you can find when you are in a foreign country.

2012 trip: New York City, Washington D.C. and Florida (day 3, New York City)

Lungo in tragitto ci fermiamo all'imponente sede dell'ONU.

It's the Central Park day. Along the route we stop at the headquarters of the UN.

although we believe that without a special permission, you can't visit it.

Ale acts like it's a joke and also Chiara is involved in that show...

Entering central park we see a lot of people around a big circle: we discover that we are at the Strawberry field Memorial, dedicated to John Lennon. One of the symbols of the park.

Call it simply park would be almost an understatement, it's amazing how there can Central Park , an oasis, exists close to the skyline of Manhattan.

Ti dimentichi anche del caldo...

you forget even about the hot...

immerso nei colori del parco.

involved in the colours of the park.

We also visit a sort of Castle in the middle of the park,

and we take some pictures with Alice, it seems to be in wonderland!

Ah, nel parco è severamente vietato fumare. Altrimenti accade questo...

In the park smoking is not allowed. Otherwise this can happen...

Usciti dal parco, visitiamo prima il Metropolitan Museum Of Art...

Just outside the park there is the Metropolitan Museum of Art...

and then two universities: the Juilliard (if you are keen on dance there's no need of explanations)

e poi la storica Columbia University..

and the historical Columbia University...

We walk really a lot. We arrive at a park close to Hudson river: New Jersey is not far...

Conclusa l'escursione giornaliera torniamo sulla quinta strada, proviamo a salire sull'Empire State Building ma, erroraccio, ci facciamo influenzare dal costo (25 dollari a testa) e desistiamo. Proveremo a rifarci quest'estate, ma punteremo al Top of the Rock del Rockfeller Center, ha la vista sia sull'Empire State Building che su Central Park.

At the end of the excursion we come back to 5th avenue. We try to go to the top of Empire State Building but the costs (25 dollars each) stop us. Unforgivable mistake! we will try to repair this summer, but we will go on the Top of the Rock of Rockfeller Center, from there you can see both the Empire State Buinding and Central Park

2012 trip: New York CIty, Washington D.C. and Florida (day 4, New York)

In the first three days we've visited all the most important things of the "big apple". In our last day in the city we want to do something weird... After a quick stop in Harlem, our friends leave us and go to visit the museums (Moma and Guggenheim), we prefer to take the subway: our destination is Queens! Why? Because of sports, of course, but also because we want to live for just one day the real New York City, not the "fake" one (Manhattan).

To the left of the station, the CitiField, home of the New York Mets baseball ..

to the right the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center. Yes, the same one where every year in late August the U.S. Open Tennis Championships is played. We are like children on Christmas day when we discover that it is possible to stay on the courts, the same ones where Federer, Nadal, Djokovic play...

L'Arthur Ashe Stadium è maestoso,

The Arthur Ashe Stadium is majestic,

così come la statua che lo raffigura.

as well as the statue of him.

We enter and watch the tennis match between Federer and Del Potro, semifinal of the Olympic Games.

One of the symbols of the entire Queens is that "world" in the middle of the park. After a quick lunch (ice crea of course)...

We walk into the park till reaching the "world"

Marco, maybe because of the hot, loses his mind and, whit the other kids, throws himself into the fountains till the policewoman (amazed to find a tourist in a period far from the tournament) forces the crowd to leave the fountain. Yes the man in the corner is Marco!

Non mancano le solite foto di rito...

of course some pictures...

In the afternoon we also sleep for a good hour on a park bench before returning to the city. We see some strange places...

Ovviamente dove andiamo noi c'è sempre coda,

It's the last night in New York, Shake Shack is waiting for us. Of course there is always a queue...

ma ormai siamo abituati...

but now we are used to ...

anche perchè l'attesa come sempre viene ripagata...

also because the wait is rewarded. As always ...

while the lights of Manhattan are shining.
