Quando pensiamo a Minorca e più in generale alle isole Baleari, sono le spiagge, le calette ed il bellissimo mare color turchese le prime cose che ci vengono in mente. Spesso, infatti, tendiamo a dimenticarci che anche la storia qui ha il suo peso complici i molti popoli che hanno vissuto nel corso dei secoli lungo questo piccolo angolo di paradiso della Spagna. A ricordarcelo sono le città, mai troppo grandi e sempre a misura d'uomo, e soprattutto sempre tutte a portata di mano. Già, perchè grazie alle ridotte dimensioni dell'isola di Minorca, tutto è a breve distanza: pensate che le due principali città, ovvero e Mahon e Ciutadela, distano infatti solamente un'ora di auto, motivo per il quale è un "must" la visita di entrambe durante un viaggio a Minorca. Noi tuttavia vogliamo portarvi più in profondità e vi parleremo anche delle altre piccole cittadine sparse per l'isola, quelle dove il tempo scorre più lento e dove si respira l'aria della vera Minorca, in una "top 5 delle città da visitare a Minorca" davvero da non perdere...
When we think of Menorca and more generally of the Balearic Islands, it is the beaches, the coves and the beautiful turquoise sea that are the first things that come to mind. Often, in fact, we tend to forget that history here also has its weight thanks to the many peoples who have lived over the centuries along this little corner of paradise in Spain. Reminding us of that time are specifically the cities, never too big and always on a human scale, and above all always all easy to reach. That's right, because thanks to the small size of the island of Menorca, everything is within easy reach: just think that the two main cities, Mahon and Ciutadela, are in fact only an hour's drive away, which is why it is a "must" to visit both during a trip to Menorca. However, we want to take you deeper and we will also tell you about the other small towns scattered around the island, the ones where time passes more slowly and where you can breathe the air of the real Menorca, in a "top 5 towns to visit in Menorca" really not to be missed...

1) MAHON
E' il centro storico, davvero molto bello, il cuore e l'anima di Mahon (o Maò), la capitale di Minorca e casa di più di un terzo della popolazione dell'isola. Affascinante è il suo enorme porto naturale e storica è la sua rivalità con la "cattolica" Ciutadela, città alla quale proprio Mahon scippò il ruolo di capitale. Le piazze saranno il vostro punto di riferimento durante il tour a piedi della città, a cui potrete dedicare almeno mezza giornata.
1) MAHON
It is the historic center, very beautiful indeed, the heart and soul of Mahon (or Maò), the capital of Menorca and home to more than a third of the island's population. Fascinating is its huge natural harbor and historic is its rivalry with the "Catholic" Ciutadela: it was actually Mahon that stole its role as capital. The squares will be your landmarks during a walking tour of the town, which deserves at least haf a day.
COSA VEDERE A MAHON - IL TOUR A PIEDI
Mahon è davvero molto semplice da visitare e, se doveste seguire il nostro consiglio, percorrerete una sorta di "loop" che vi consentirà di toccare tutti i luoghi principali del centro storico in un percorso che non supererà i 3 km. Noi abbiamo scelto di lasciare la vettura lungo Carrer de Sant Sebastià, al parcheggio gratuito situato al numero 83 e percorso Carrer tutta la via sino a raggiungere il cuore del centro storico, ovvero Carrer del Carme. Ecco il nostro itinerario che, come vi abbiamo già anticipato, seguirà le numerose piazze, il vero e autentico cuore pulsante di Mahon.

Risalente al XVIII secolo, fu costruita durante il primo dominio inglese ed è di fatto l'edificio religioso più grande di Mahon. Accanto alla chiesa neoclassica del Carmen troverete il “Chiostro del Convento del Carmen”, costruito tra il 1750 e il 1808. Ha ospitato l’ordine carmelitano, ma nel suo passato è stato anche palazzo di giustizia e carcere ed ora ospita una serie di spazi ad uso culturale, tra cui la raccolta di Hernández Mora Foundation. Interessante è anche il mercato di carne, verdura e frutta situato al piano terra.
WHAT TO SEE IN MAHON - THE WALKING TOUR
Mahon is really very easy to visit and, following our advice, you will walk a sort of loop that allows you to touch all the main places located in the historic downtown (3 km). We chose to leave the car along Carrer de Sant Sebastià, at the free parking lot located at number 83 and walked the Carrer all the way until we reached the heart of the historic center, namely Carrer del Carme. From here, the itinerary follows the many squares, the real and authentic beating heart of Mahon.

Dating from the 18th century, it was built during the first English rule and is also the largest religious building in Mahon. Next to the neoclassical Carmen Church you will find the "Cloister of the Carmen Convent," built between 1750 and 1808. It housed the Carmelite order, but in its past it also served as courthouse and prison and now houses a number of spaces for cultural use, including the Hernández Mora Foundation collection. The meat, vegetable and fruit market located on the ground floor is also interesting.

Costruita nel XIV secolo, la chiesa fu abbattuta da un fulmine e poi definitivamente ricostruita dagli inglesi nel 1748. Il suo simbolo è l'organo, costruito tra il 1807 e il 1810 dai maestri svizzeri Johannes Kyburz e Franz Josef Otter, unanimemente riconosciuto come uno dei capolavori dell'arte organaria.

Built in the 14th century, the church was demolished by lightning and then finally rebuilt by the British in 1748. Its landmark is the organ, built between 1807 and 1810 by Swiss masters Johannes Kyburz and Franz Josef Otter, which is unanimously recognized as one of the masterpieces of organ art.

2) CIUTADELA
Se Mahon è secondo noi una città da visitare con un percorso a piedi che tocchi le sue bellezze e vi porti a scoprire le bellissime piazze, Ciutadela è decisamente... una città da vivere. Qui dimenticatevi dei fogli e dei percorsi prestabiliti, partite dal bellissimo porto turistico, dove non mancano ristoranti e discoteche, e spingetevi verso il centro storico scoprendone la sua storia millenaria, fatta di dominazione romana, turca, araba ed infine britannica.

2) CIUTADELA
If Mahon is in our opinion a city you should visit during a walking tour that touches its beauties and takes you to discover the beautiful squares, Ciutadela is definitely ... a city to live. Here, forget the sheets and pre-established routes, start from the beautiful marina, where there is no shortage of restaurants and discos, and push on to the historic downtown discovering its thousand-year history, made up of Roman, Turkish, Arab and finally British domination.

Ma poi rituffatevi immediatamente nel cuore e anima di Ciutadela, ovvero il suo centro storico, e passeggiate per Es Born, che termimna nell'omonima piazza, teatro di eventi e feste durante tutto l'anno. Es Born è sempre viva, di giorno come di sera.
But then get back into the heart and soul of Ciutadela, its historic downtown, and stroll through Es Born, which ends in the square of the same name, the scene of events and festivals throughout the year. Es Born is always alive, by day and by night.
Salutata Plaça d’es Born, l’antica piazza d’armi con un obelisco al centro che ricorda le vittime dell’invasione turca nel 1558, proseguite verso Carrer Ses Voltes, la via dello shopping e curiosate tra le piccole viette che l'intrecciano, una delle quali vi condurrà allo storico mercato del pesce, ospitato all'interno di un edificio del 1895.
As soon as you have left Plaça d'es Born, the old parade ground with an obelisk in the center commemorating the victims of the Turkish invasion in 1558, continue on to Carrer Ses Voltes, the shopping street, and browse the small alleys that weave it together, one of which will lead you to the historic fish market, housed inside a building built in 1895.
Proprio qui dietro abbiamo trovato il nostro ristorante preferito, il tapas bar Maramao. Gli appassionati di architettura invece non potranno perdersi il Municipio, il Palazzo Torresaura, il Palazzo Vivò, il Palazzo Olives, il Palazzo del Conte di Sauro e Palazzo Satort.
Just back here, we found our favorite restaurant, the tapas bar Maramao. Architecture buffs, on the other hand, will not want to miss the City Hall, the Torresaura Palace, the Vivò Palace, the Olives Palace, the Count of Sauro Palace, and the Satort Palace.

Anche se, va detto, l'edificio principale è sicuramente la splendida Cattedrale (1, Plaça de la Catedral), una chiesa quattrocentesca in stile gotico catalano con facciata barocca costruita dove un tempo sorgeva la moschea centrale di Medina Minurka.
Although, it must be said, the main building is definitely the splendid Cathedral (1, Plaça de la Catedral), a 15th-century Catalan Gothic church with a Baroque facade built where the central mosque of Medina Minurka once stood.

3) BINIBEQUER VELL
Tredici chilometri a sud dell'aeroporto (per questo consigliamo di visitarlo non appena sarete atterrati sull'isola di Minorca) si trova questo autentico gioiellino, un villaggio che se da una parte poco ha da spartire con il resto dell'isola, dall'altro è davvero un qualcosa di unico che vi lascerà a bocca aperta.
3) BINIBEQUER VELL
Thirteen kilometers south of the airport (this is why we recommend visiting it as soon as you land on the island of Menorca), this authentic gem lies: it's a village that while it has little to do with the rest of the island, is truly something unique and will leave you speechless.
Parliamo di Binibequer Vell, un complesso turistico ricreato ad immagine e somiglianza di un pittoresco villaggio di pescatori del Mediterrano, con casette totalmente bianche (tetto compreso) e strettissime viuzze. Un luogo che si può visitare solamente a piedi ed in religioso silenzio. Non mancheranno, infatti, i cartelli sui muri a ricordarvelo: Silencio Por Favor.
We are talking about Binibequer Vell, a tourist complex recreated in the image and likeness of a picturesque Mediterranean fishing village, with totally white cottages (including the roof) and very narrow streets. A place that can only be visited on foot and in religious silence. In fact, there will be no shortage of signs on the walls to remind you: Silencio Por Favor.
Mentre d'estate è vivissima, con negozietti di souvenir, bar, locali e ristoranti, durante l'inverno si spopola, rendendola ancor più gradevole durante la vostra passeggiata. Non lontano troverete anche l'omonima spiaggia, ideale per lo snorkeling.
While it is lively in the summer, with souvenir stores, bars, clubs and restaurants, it is depopulated during the winter, making it even more pleasant during your walk. Not far away, there's also Playa Binibeca, which is perfect for snorkeling.
4) ES FORNELLS
Ci siamo spostati a nord, nella zona decisamente più remota e selvaggia dell'isola di Minorca. Qui una delle grandi attrazioni è il villaggio di pescatori di Es Fornells, famoso in tutta la Spagna (e non solo) per la caldereta de langosta (la zuppa di aragoste), sulla cui pesca si basa l'intera economia del paese. Calle Major è l'arteria principale del piccolo paese di Es Fornells, caratterizzato dalle palme e punto di partenza per la vela e per gli sport acquatici che rappresentano la principale attrazione del paese.
4) ES FORNELLS
We moved north to the decidedly more remote and wild area of the island of Menorca. Here, one of the great attractions is the fishing village of Es Fornells, famous throughout Spain (and beyond) for the "Caldereta de langosta" (lobster soup): the entire economy of the village is based on the fishing of lobsters. Calle Major is the main artery of the small village of Es Fornells, characterized by palm trees and starting point for the sailing and water sports that are the main attraction of the town.

Il villaggio infatti si trova alle porte di una grande baia naturale chiusa le cui acque protette la rendono perfetta per tutti i tipi di velisti. Appena a nord del paese, potrete visitare la storica Torre di Es Fornells, eretta nel 1799 e casa di una mostra sul sistema difensivo dell’isola di Minorca.
In fact, the village is located at the gateway to a large natural enclosed bay whose protected waters make it perfect for all types of sailors. Just north of the village, you can visit the historic Es Fornells Tower, erected in 1799 and home to an exhibition on the island of Menorca's defense system.
5) ES MERCADAL
Nonostante sia spesso considerata solo un crocevia per chi attraversa l'isola da Mahon a Ciutadela, o per chi si spinge sino alla cima del Monte Toro (o ancora verso Cala Pregonda), Es Mercadal è invece una bellissima cittadina che merita non solo una fermata, ma anche di essere inserita nella "top 5 delle città da visitare a Minorca". Probabilmente non c'è città migliore per scoprire la "vera" Minorca, perchè Es Mercadal è ricca di mercati (da cui il nome), negozi, ristoranti ed è perfetta per coloro che vogliono esplorare la parte interna dell'isola o che amano la natura.
5) ES MERCADAL
Although it is often considered just a crossroads for those who cross the island, from Mahon to Ciutadela, or for those who go all the way to the top of Monte Toro (or even to Cala Pregonda), Es Mercadal is instead a beautiful town that deserves not only a stop, but also to be included in the "top 5 towns to visit in Menorca." There is probably no better town to discover the "real" Menorca, because Es Mercadal is full of markets (hence the name), stores, restaurants, and is perfect for those who want to explore the interior of the island or who love nature.
