United States, east or west? (part 3, California)

If Arizona could give you the single place that you will bring forever in your heart (the Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon ...) however, there is a state, completely different from all the others, which probably beats all. We talk about the most popular destination for an "on the road": its name is California, a very special place on earth. Another place like California, where large cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego ) are very close to deserts, mountains, ocean and all the the things it can offer ... well simply does not exist at least in the North American continent. There is something for everyone here: those who love adventure will be satisfied, as well as those who love the sea or the mountains, or even those who love luxury (some neighborhoods of Los Angeles and Palm Springs above all) or small villages in the desert. We would like to draw a top 30, not just a top 10, but we are here for this, for our "ten must see places"! Don't forget that California is a very huge state and you are forced to make choices while you are organizing the trip.

SAN FRANCISCO
Dimenticatevi l'auto, immergetevi in "Frisco" e percorrete i suoi saliscendi a piedi o sfruttando i mezzi pubblici,,,

Who doesn't like San Francisco, can't be friend of us! we don't negotiate about this aspect. A very unique and particular city: the main attractions are of course the Golden Gate, Alcatraz Island, the Lombard Street, the Pier, Chinatown (the biggest outside China) and the wonderful cable car. Forget about your car, walk along Frisco's up and down or use public transport.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK E SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK

They are two huge national park and you can easily visit both of them in a California trip because Yosemite and Sequoia are close each other. Of course, Yosemite is boundless and distances here are very important. It's high, very high mountains (the Tioga Pass is located at 3000 meters), there are huge waterfalls (the Yosemite falls are the largest of North America with their 740 meters), valleys and ... even bears. The Tioga Road, the only one that runs through the park, in the colder months is closed. Just below Yosemite there is another extraordinary park, Sequoia National Park. The 75 km of the Hwy General are absolutely spectacular and cross the Giant Forest, where redwoods are as high as 20 floor buildings.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Rocks very old (almost two million years ago), temperatures that can easily reach 50 degrees (120 farenheit) and a very special place: Badwater, 86 meters below sea level where salt seems  sand. Death Valley is all this and much more: the name is scary but at the same time it  increases its charm ...

HIGHWAY 1 - BIG SUR - 17MILE DRIVE

Miles and miles of beautiful nature, a road suspended between ocean, forests and mountains. the Highway 1, which connects San Francisco to Los Angeles, is one of the best scenic drives in the world. The picture that best symbolizes the beauty of Big Sur is offered by Julia Pfeiffer State Park (one of many state park that you can visit in this area), where McWay Fall comes directly on the beach in a bay situated in a natural place with unreal colors. The 17mile drive is another gem: just left Monterey, you'll find a loop (there is a small fee, about 10 dollars) and with your car you'll be in the town of Pebble Beach: an exclusive luxury place in a nature with few equals.

SAN DIEGO
Troppo spesso sottovalutata e "terza incomoda" dopo Los Angeles e San Francisco, San Diego vi stupirà.

Too often underestimated comparing to the most famous Los Angeles and San Francisco, but San Diego will amaze you. It's a classical border city, living the Mexican flu, but here you can find everything, even an important Italian community. The most beautiful beaches of the entire west coast coast are around San Diego and even the road that connects the city to Los Angeles (crossing the famous Orange County of "The O.C.") is a must. The main quarter is Gaslamp (shops and restaurants), but both Jolla, where there are the most beautiful beaches ("Baywatch style"), the Old Town, and the luxurious peninsula of Coronado will not disappoint you. Here, as in all the coast, you can see sea lions ...

About Los Angeles you can say everything and anything. Immense city, you'll love it or you won't like it. Its chic neighborhoods (Beverly Hills and much more ...), hollywood, entertainment (Disneyland and Universal Studios) and beaches (Santa Monica, Venice Malibu) are well known all over the the world.

NAPA VALLEY

The Napa Valley region and Sonoma, create one of the most active and prestigious wine vines region in the world. Food and wine lovers and people who love food-tourism (like us!) should not miss this area just north of San Francisco. This area is very, very similar to our Tuscany.

THE DESERTS

Deserts occupy 25% of the California's territory. There are two deserts: south-east of Los Angeles there is the Colorado deserts, with the beautiful Joshua Tree National Park and the city of Palm Springs, an incredible oasis in the desert. Further north, just outside Los Angeles and along Route 66, there's the Mojave Desert that will lead up to the Death Valley. If you are planning a trip to California, most likely you'll pass through at least one of the two deserts and it will be a unique experience.

BODIE & CALICO GHOST TOWN

They are two ghost towns of the old west, founded during the "gold rush". Bodie is near the Mono Lake (east of Yosemite), Calico issituated along Route 66 near Barstow. There would be a third ghost town, just crossed the border with Nevada, just outside the Death Valley. Although part of another state this town should be visited if you're around the Death Valley. Its name is Rhyolite.

THE SWIMMING HOLES

In California it can be very hot, as evidenced by the Death Valley, but there are natural places of absolute coolness. It's incredible but they are not yet a very famous tourist destinations. They are called "swimming holes", natural pools where you can relax. The most "popular" is probably the god's bath in Sonoma, along the road that connects Yosemite with San Francisco. By clicking on the following link you will find information about all the holes (http://www.swimmingholes.org/ca.html)

United States, east or west? (part 4, Utah)

This is probably the most particular state of the Entire Unites States, uninhabited in many areas and very, very religious. In Utah everyhing starts and ends with the religious community of Mormons, which influences both culture and day life in the most religious state, with the highest birth rate in America. It's populated almost entirely by "whites" as many of the west states and here laws regarding alcohol, tobacco, and much more are very strict. This is not a state where we would like to live (there are several restrictions and you can find people very very religious: if you have seen the tv series "big love", you would certainly understand ...), but one of the best to visit. It is a state with few equals if we talk about nature. And not just because it has a part of Monument Valley, shared with Arizona, and because its mountains are  the most beautiful in America (Park City is a stage of the ski World Cup). Here there is much, much more and if you are tired of nature remember that Nevada and in particular Las Vegas is close enough....

BRYCE CANYON & ZION NATIONAL PARK

The beautiful Bryce Canyon pinnacles convince many people to put this park at the top of their personal list, maybe even in front of giants such as the Grand Canyon or Monument Valley. We are in the southwest, just above Zion National Park, in a natural setting with few equals. Zion, not far from Bryce Canyon and even from the Arizona and Nevada borderline offers varied landscape. From waterfalls to towering rock formations, from canyons to magnificent views given by the "scenic drives". It takes at least two days to visit both the parks.

(Bryce Canyon view)

SALT LAKE CITY
Ordinata, pulita, lontana anni luce dalle altre città americane.

Liveable, clean, very different from the other American cities. This is Salt Lake City. The "Mormon Temple" is obviously the main attraction of a city which is also famous for its salt lake, the second in the world (after the Dead Sea), by percentage of salinity.

UTAH STATE ROUTE 12 SCENIC BWAYS
Doveste percorrerla, assaporatene ogni miglio...

In a Utah"on the road" this is the road, the best road. If you driving along the UT12 it means that you are leaving Bryce Canyon and going to Moab or Salt Lake City (or vice versa). You'll be catapulted into another dimension: it's you, your car and a landscape which is constantly changing.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Located near Moab (southeast), in some ways it's the most charming park in Utah, with its immense sandstone arches (over 2000). The most famous arch, the Delicate Arch, is very famous: it's the symbol of many plates of the state and is a popular destination especially at sunset. The Double Arch (Ulk and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were filmed here) with the blue summer sky offers stunning images.

CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK

Canyonlands National Park is the largest park in Utah (we are still not far from Moab). Huge canyons, the biggest and probably the most fascinating, even more than the Grand Canyon. Island in the Sky is the tourist place that will give you the best view.

CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK

Located in the heart of the state (you'll find it at the beginning or end of the UT12), it is considered "one of the best kept secrets" of Utah. In fact, despite its extraordinary peculiarities, Capitol Reef is not as touristy as other parks in the state, it's a sort of oasis appreciated by those are escaping from the more famous and crowded parks. Two of the reasons why it is not very popular are: scarcity of access and poverty of paved roads.

GRAND STAIRCASE ESCALANTE NATIONAL MONUMENT

If you are driving a four wheels vehicle and are an experienced driver on dirty roads, take the "paradise canyon road", near Kanab (southwest of the state) and drive until you reach the Grand Staircase- Escalante Monument. It's huge, larger than many national parks despite being "only" a "national monument" and its canyon are probably among the most beautiful. Be careful when you hike along the trails...

DEAD HORSE POINT STATE PARK

If you want to have a fantastic view of the Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park, especially at sunset, this is your place. Unlike Horseshoe bend, whose name comes from its shape, the Dead Horse name comes from a legend that tells how once it was a place where were kept horses in a corral with a overhanging side: once cowboys left horses without water for too long and some of them died watching the river from a distance without any chance to escape and reach it. Some scenes of Mission Impossible and Thelma & Louise were filmed here...

CORAL PINK SAND DUNES STATE PARK

You'll find the best Utah's sand dunes here in Kanab (southwest), into the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. With their beautiful pink color, the dunes will surprise and give you a particular view of this part of Utah while you are driving to Bryce Canyon or Page. This is the "home of quad": with 70 dollars you can live this experience!

BEAR LAKE STATE PARK
Esiste, esiste.

A lake with colors that only the Caribbean Sea can offer? It exists. This place is the Bear Lake State Park (nicknamed "Caribbean of the rockies", northeast of the state, on the border with Idaho). Why are there these beautiful colors?  The magic of the west! Well, if you are planning to visit it, you should know that the legend says that a monster lives into the lake, the Bear Lake Monster ...

Avventure, disavventure e...consigli - adventure, misadventure and... tips

After many adventures, which are closely related to our stories, let's try now to venture into an area as important as the travel tales: we are talking about useful tips for and "on the road" into the United States. That's because incidents and unexpected events, as you know, are always around the corner and starting from the fact that Americans are incredibly friendly and willing to help people in trouble, it is good to keep in your mind some "unwritten rules" that have always to be respected when you are in a foreign country. We will tell them in our own way, starting from all the misadventures and all the weird situations occurred to us in our american trips...

The first thing you'll notice is that in almost all restaurants and pubs (or places where service is provided by a waiter) you'll be invited to leave a tip. Usually the range is 15 to 20 percent of the total amount, no one will chase you with a stick if you leave less then 15 percent. Sometimes we act like "italians" do and leave just 10% with a looooot of coins: don't be as stingy as us...

Remember that Americans use to dine early and if you are in an area not so much populated and not so much touristy, you could be rejected if you want to dine after 8.30 pm

portions are often abundant. Do not order too many dishes, because even american appetizers are much more abundant than our starters. If you don't want to end up like us and go to the nearest CVS looking for a tums or something to digest.

(un antipasto all'americana...)
(an american appetizer...)

- Water is often free of charge but rarely is good. If you want it "sparkling" you have to order the "club soda"

(In Mammoth Lakes, California, a waitress even thanked us for the tip)

I MOTEL/MOTELS

Motels are often a comfortable accommodation along an on the road. If it's just a stopover, motels, cheaper than hotels, are an excellent and economic choice. Major brands (super 8 and motel 6 above all) are the most famous, and usually don't disappoint you: certainly it's not like staying at Hilton, but if you are tired after a long day in a National Park or after miles and miles on your car, you will not notice the difference . In motels breakfast is usually included and the price range of a room is 20 to 100 Euros/dollars per night depending on where you are.

(L'Econolodge di Wall, South Dakota. Un'altra famosa catena di motel)
(Econolodge motel in Wall, South Dakota. Another famous motel chain)

Many of them have the pool. And yes, sometimes they are not so different from the pool you see in the american horror movies. We have been to more than thirty motels and just a couple of them were very bad, but we were in an inaccessible area of the States. In one of them, in Cheyenne (Wyoming's capital), there was the famous yellow and black stripe "do not cross", typical of the american movies. It really seemed to be in a horror movie...

In pieno deserto...)
(our first impact with a motel, in Barstow, California. In the middle of the desert...)

In many motels / hotels a laundry is available for the guests. With a few dollars you can buy the soap and wash your clothes. Do not fill your suitcase when you are at home, fill  it with a lot of SHOPPING there!

- If you forget anything do not be afraid to ask at front desk. In case you're still in trouble and there is no supermarket in the area, look for a CVS or a Wallgreens, the two major US pharmacy chains. Well, into the United States pharmacy is a bit different: it's a huge supermarket and you can find everything. And of course even the pharmacy.

Qui i cari vecchi motel vi verranno in soccorso...

In New York, Miami hotels are very expensive, probably the most expensive of the entire states. Usually in big cities you can find cheaper hotels, but the script is very different near the big american parks, especially those of the West. In these remote areas accommodation in a "Best Western", (a mid-range hotel) costs as a Hilton in big city. Here the old  good motel will rescue you.

A volte triplicano.

- If you are planning a trip to Las Vegas and if you have the possibility you should not plan to stay there during weekends because the cost of the hotels in that days (from friday to sunday) are much more expensive than the other days. From monday to friday hotels in Vegas are very cheap.

United States, east or west? (part 5: New Mexico)

It's the end of our "mini trip" around the most famous states of the west. New Mexico is not as visited as the famous California, Arizona and Utah beacuse it's far from the traditional routes, but the state of "Breaking Bad", the famous tv series, is one the most fascinating of the entire states even if it's one of the poorest (economically). In our special list New Mexico deserves and a special place, and if you are a fan of the "On the Road", you will immediately realize the reason why New Mexico is beautiful. You can't simply find a sky like this elsewhere.

The nickname of the state, where mexican influence is very important, is "Land of Enchantment". Yes, it's really impossible not to fall in love with it. Drawing our personal top 10 is not easy because there's something for everyone: from the desert to the mountains, from the legendary Santa Fe to the towns with few people (also along the Route 66), from, Indians to cowboys, from the White Sands to the mysterious Roswell, from Billy the Kid to the Turquoise Trail. Well, and of course the food. Here you will find the best "tex-mex" cuisine outside Mexico and New Mexico green chili is something sensational ...

WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT

The "Land of Enchantment" is here. If you find this sentence on each plate, if when you are about to enter the state you'll read this, the White Sands National Monument is one of the reasons. Pay the entry fee ($ 3) and with your car go into a charming world, made of a fine white sand, amazing especially at sunset. You already know how much love we feel for this place, located in the south of the state, near the border with Texas.

CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD
Come direbbe qualcuno, "what else?"

The Cumbres and Toltec narrow gauge steam heritage railroad runs between Chama (New Mexico) and Antonito (Colorado) in the rocky mountians and under the beautiful sky of New Mexico. This railroad, built in 1880 is very unique. When you get off the train, look for a saloon and drink a beer with locals cowboys while listening John Denver, the famous singer born in New Mexico.

ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALOON FIESTA

Albuquerque is the largest city and most important of the entire state of New Mexico. The city of Walter White of Breaking Bad becomes incredible every year (in 2015, from the 3rd to 11th) where the most potographed event takes place: the Albuquerque International Baloon Fiesta. Over 750 balloons of different sizes and colors, rise in the most beautiful sky in the world, giving life to a show with very few equals. And when you are in Albuquerque, don't forget the route 66...

SANTA FE'

One of the trendiest places in America, and certainly one of the ten to fifteen places where you should live. There are many New Yorkers who, annoyed by the Big Apple mess, have chosen Santa Fe and enjoyed one of the most fascinating cities in the States. Here there is the oldest public building in the country (the Palace of the Governors, 1800) and especially there are adobe-style buildings that make Santa fe truly unique.

ROSWELL
8 luglio 1947.

July 8, 1947. An unidentified flying object crashed on a ranch 30km far from the city of Roswell, 300 km south of Albuquerque. The truth is not known, but if ever the aliens have visited us, this is the day and this is the city. If you are Ufo addicted this is your place and the museum located in the heart of the city will satisfy your curiosity.

SANDIA PEAK SKI & TRAMWAY

If you do not suffer from vertigo, take the tram that takes you up to the Sandia Peak. We are not far from Albuquerque and the Sandia Peak (the longest cable car of North America) will be a great adventure and the view from the top will be amazing.

Located north of Santa Fe, Los Alamos is famous for its National Laboratory. Here, in fact, has been produced and tested the first atomic bomb (1945). A stop at the museum is a "must" and even at the pueblos, the indian villages. There 19 pueblos in New Mexico and the most famous is definitely Taos, north east of Santa Fe.

FOUR CORNERS NATIONAL MONUMENT
Perchè il New Mexico?

Yes, we know that. Why didn't we put the four corners national monument into the Utah ora Arizona top 10? Why New Mexico? Simply because we visited it coming from New Mexico! This is the only place where four states meet each other (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado). A place as any other you would say. No, it doesn't. And you'll realize that when you see a lot of people waiting (in line) for their turn. You can put a foot in Arizona and the other one in Colorado. Isn't it amazing?

TURQUOISE TRAIL NATIONAL SCENIC BWAY

If you are driving from Albuquerque to Santa Fe (or vice versa) don't follow the Interstate, choose the scenic Turquoise Trail which will take you along small villages like Tijeras, Cedar Crest, San Marcos, but especially Madrid, Cerrillos and Golden. Indian towns clearly linked to the old west: visit the various souvenir shops and dive into a world far away not only from our own cities, but even from the neighboring cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

CARLSBAD CAVERN NATIONAL PARK

Not only caverns, even 16 specis of bats. It's south-east of New Mexico, close to the borderline with Texas. Get involved by the ranger and visit the incredible underground world of Carlsbad Cavern, You can choose to do it through the natural path (recommended) or with the help of a elevator.

Avventure, disavventure e...consigli - adventure, misadventure and... tips (part 2)

Let's continue with our american style "travel tips". As we have already said, we'll tell them in our own way, starting from all the misadventures and all the weird situations occurred to us in our american trips...

AUTO/CAR

If you are planning an on the road you have to rent a car. Alamo, Hertz, dollar ... there are several good car rental companies on the American territory and the most famous of them, should not disappoint your expectations. Usually the insurance is already included when you proceed with the online purchase of the package, but there will certainly be some salesman ready to sell you additional insurances when you pick up the car. The more you have, the more you're covered ... but obviously you have to spend much more money. We do not want to influence you, we just want to give you some suggestions about other aspects ...

-  The best combination of refueling, at least according to our experiences, is the "empty / empty" one. It means thatn you pick up the car with empty tank and return it in the same conditions. That's because the gas at the rentals car is more expensive than the classic gas station. And the gasoline in the United States is not expensive (last summer we spent 200 euros and drove for for 5 thousand kilometers)

- Remember that, while you are going to rent a car, if your intention is to pick up the car in a place that we call "a" and return it in anothe place ("b") you'll pay a very high tax, from 100 to 500 dollars, called "drop off" or "one way". California and Nevada are not involved, so you won't have to pay. In these two states even the second driver is free of charge.

(the choice of the car is always funny)

- If you are in big city, remember to use the "car pool" if available, a fast track for vehicle with two or more people. You'll beat the traffic! In Los Angeles (it was our first trip) we didn't immediately notice this option and still regret it...

- In many intersections with traffic lights, is allowed to turn right even with the red light, you've just to pay attention. Usually a sign in the middle of the intersection will point out if this operation is not permitted. But if you don't feel safe, do not take unnecessary risks: an American hardly uses the horn.

- Do not forget, wherever you are, to check on the internet all the "scenic bways" of the state you are about to visit. They are scenic roads that very often require a small deviation from the "main road", but they will allow you to enjoy amazing scenery. These scenic bways are reported on the internet (http://scenicbyways.info/): absolutely don't miss this opportunity ...

(one of the most famous scenic bways: from Mexican Hat to the Monument Valley)

Summer 2015 on the road, preview

Summer is still far away, but winter months can also be funny if you are going to draw on the map your new "on the road". Starting from a flight purchased in october, taking advantage of an important offer on the internet (Luxemburg-New York for 450 euros), we are planning another stars and stripes trip. "Let's buy this ticket and go to New York City, then we'll decide where to go" we immediately said... but in our mind we already had a goal: our beloved west. So we are going to come back to that area of the United States for the fourth time: it's like a magnet and you can resist...

The idea is to resume some places that we have only touched for a very short time, and add some pearls of nature we can't really miss, for example Antelope Canyon. We'll get to Phoenix from New York and from the most important city of Arizona it will start a 11-day long on the road that take us to cross (from south to north) the entire state of Arizona until arriving in Utah, then go down to Las Vegas touching even a little bit of California with the Death Valley. We've already changed the travel plan at least 10-15 times and we will change it at least 10 times again. But key points of our trip are safe: we are talking about the south south of Arizona (Tucson and Tombstone), the enchanting Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Page with its Horseshoe Band, Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, Zion and the Valley of Fire, Death Valley and, if it will be possible, even Area 51. As always when you want to visit these areas, and in particular the northern Arizona run by the Navajo Indians, you have to book motels in advance to avoid the risk of having to pay higher prices.

Suggestions and comments to the post are welcome!

DAY 1
Volo da New York a Phoenix

Flight from New York to Phoenix

DAY 2

From Phoenix to Tucson through some towns of the old west: for example the famous Tombstone, where time has stopped at the end of 1800.

DAY 3

From Tucson to Phoenix through the Saguaro National Park, surrounded by cactus that have always been a symbol of Arizona. We will also stop in Scottsdale to visit its Old Town.

DAY 4

From Phoenix to Sedona: we'll visit one of the most important Arizona's town, with its red rocks and incredible colors. The goal is to stop even at Slide Rock State Park to live the natural water slides that just a state like Arizona can offer

DAY 5

From Sedona to Page, with two important appointments. The plane ride over the Grand Canyon (cheaper than the helicopter) and a stop at Horseshoe Bend

DAY 6

That will be the Antelope Canyon day. In the afternoon, we would like to take the opportunity for a swim into Lake Powell, an oasis of cool in the middle of the Arizona and Nevada hot.

DAY 7

We will cross the Utah borderline: we're going to visit Bryce Canyon, according to many people even more beautiful than the famous Grand Canyon. We'll find out ...

DAY 8

On the way to Las Vegas two important milestones, Zion Park and the Valley of Fire. We don't know so much about these places, but can't wait to be there...

DAY 9-10-11
I tre giorni a Las Vegas.

We'll spend the last three days in Las Vegas. There are no doubts about what to do in Vegas in the evening, visit all the hotels will be our goal! During the day it's a little more complicated if you don't want to stay all day long at the pool. We would like to do three excursions: during day 1 we would like to drive along the 150 miles that separate Vegas from the Death Valley and visit the park. Day 2 will be dedicated to majestic Hoover Dam and, last but not least, during day 3 we'll try to get as close as possible to the Area 51. Unless alines get us...

(Horseshoe bend - Arizona)                                                                 (Sedona - Arizona)

(Las Vegas)

(Antelope Canyon - Arizona)

(Death Valley - California)
