Sicuramente in tanti. Pronti a salpare?

What's the most beautiful and particular american city? If you are doing a survey and you are not considering New York for many reasons, the three main answers will certainly be San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago. All of them could possibly stay in a hypothetical top step of the virtual podium and your personal tastes will obviously decide the top three ranking. Today we focus on San Francisco, northwest of California in the Oakland Bay: we want to talk about this beautiful city through the eyes of those who live it day by day, through the eyes of an italian girl now "adopted" by "Frisco." Since more than a year ago, in fact, our friend Francesca has been living an important, probably the most fascinating of his life, experience, working for a family in San Francisco. She will take us into the heart of the city, because nobody better than those we use to call "the locals" can tell what one of the most visited cities of the United States can offer ...

“Cinesi, messicani, indiani, francesi, canadesi, tedeschi… persino italiani.

"People from China, Mexico, India, France, Canada, Germany ... even Italy. You have just to choose the country, even the most remote, and certainly you will find in San Francisco someone who comes from there. I've never seen a city so much multicultural as this one, i have never seen so many differences, all homogeneously living together. But here in the city where the wind always blows and where you can find the rain in the north and the sun in the south (or vice versa), the movement is the main feature".

"Movement, then innovation, nostalgia of the beat generation, artists who play, dancing and begging  homeless, but also the bus of the big IT companies that transport hundreds of workers toward Silicon Valley, the home of the various Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo, Ebay, etc., people who realised this computerized world we belong to. San Francisco is an up and down of ideas and streets, those traveled by the famous cable car and those of many people who come here to invest, create "start up", work in the bars, attend events and touch that impalpable identity of red bridge city, the Golden Gate. You simply cannot fall in love with the Golden Gate!".

(Silicon Valley)

“Suddivisa in piccoli quartieri , San francisco, si scinde in ventisette zone ognuna delle quali possiede proprie peculiari caratteristiche. Proverò a portarvi dentro le più belle…”.

Divided into small neighborhoods, San Francisco, is splitted into twenty-seven areas. Every single area has its own peculiar characteristics. I will try to take you inside the most beautiful ... ".

"Castro: universally recognized as the homosexuality's "Mecca", this neighborhood is hosting the rainbow shop (the rainbow is a gay symbol), excellent bakeries and cafés, and especially the famous Art Deco Theater able to broadcast vintage movies from all around the world. In particular during Halloween time, "this is the place" if you are looking for fun and of course the best costumes in town ... "

(a rainbow crosswalk in Castro)

"Chinatown: the" Dragon Gate "allows us to enter in a small and concentrate Chinese world, made of restaurants, shops and street vendors offering basically everything. It's very characteristic, especially during the Chinese New Year party, when costumes, parades and fireworks make this neighborhood even more crowded".

"Fisherman's Wharf: It's definitely the most visited neighborhood of the entire town, it's perfect espcecially for families on vacation. Shops, museums and typical seafood restaurants (always a good choice in SF) where you can taste the famous crab sandwich or the soup in bread bowl, enliven the various "Pier"".

"The most famous pier, however,is  the "Pier 39" which is even the home of the sea lions, friendly mammals that seem to enjoy all the tourists who take them a lot of pictures"

"Haight - Asbury: although it can also count on some modern shops, this district tries in every way to maintain its hippie identity thanks to many local craft shops: vintage clothing, antique bookstores, tattoo artists and vinyls vendors allow you to relive the 'atmosphere of the' 60s with beautiful Victorian homes in the background ".

Japantown: nobdy renounces to "something Japanese" anymore, even those who are not crazy about seafood. Here, you can meet "sushi addicted" everywhere. Japanese restaurants everywhere, but also local "manga" shops, tea vendors and the largest japanese library throughout the entire United States. Remember, never say no to a "California Maki"! ".

"Mission District: named the Latin heart of the city, who now hits Valencia street and the 16th is not only a Latin, but also those who is riding the Hipster wave".

"Mexican Restaurants, murals, art galleries, cafes and even last generation bicycle sellers (but vintage style) are the main attractions of Dolores Park: it is not only famous for the magnificent view of the city, but also for the typical Sunday picnic...".

"North Beach: pizza, mozzarella, gelato... here we finally are, it's home, it's Italy: along North Beach streets there is " Little Italy ", with the typical "throw-in man" that tries to convince you to come in his italian restaurant. This is the typical "italian style".  North Beach is also famous because is the most colorful neighborhood of the entire San Francisco: the neon lights of the strip club and bars create an unique atmosphere "

"Presidio is a national park where once  military families lived. It has been transformed into a luxurious neighborhood surrounded by a park that reaches the ocean (Baker Beach) giving to our eyes the beautiful Golden Gate bridge view. This area offers the possibility to go for wonderful walks, the access to interesting and historic military structures but is also a luxurious neighborhood for families who want to live in the city dreaming of being on holiday".

"Financial District: San Francisco's inhabitants call their downtown in ths way. That's because this area is mainly occupied by skyscrapers that host the most important legal and administrative offices of international companies. Actually, the Financial District is also an important tourist destination because you can fine a lot of shops and malls".

"This is also the Ferry Building area, the very interesting local agricultural producers market (Saturday morning) that offers fresh products and excellent take away breakfast you can enjoy "ocean front" with the wonderful view of the Bay Bridge in the background. You can even find "roof-top" bars, where you can sip a sophisticated vodka-tini and admire the city ".

"Union Square: just above the financial district, Union Square is the perfect world for" shopaholics ": Macy's, Saks, Cartier, Gucci, Armani ... they will satisfy every taste and the street artists who perform Jazz music will definitely help your mood after the  inevitable bankruptcy".

"Soma: the "desert" during the day, in a background made of factories and every kind of discount stores, at night the nightlife comes to life between Folsom Street and the eleventh (11th). Club, bars, pubs, modern restaurants and "pizza place" for the post-night. Here, the "people of the night" know every single corner, but then they will definitely forget when the sun comes out".

"This is a sort of San Francisco "day by day ", then there is a scenario of someone who has been living here for over a year, but is still dreaming with tourist eyes, simply because here it's really inevitable."

(the world famous San Francisco's cable car)

"Remember that if you are San Francisco, you can't forget to cross the bridge that during 1989 resisted the famous earthquake: the Golden Gate bridge, the best bridge in the world with its gorgeous color in every weather conditions: in a foggy day (here it's not unusual, even in summer) or in a sunshine day it will donate vibrant emotions".

"The At&T Park is the home of the San Francisco Giants. Hardcore fans, families and friends watch the long baseball games while sipping beer and eating popcorn. The conception of "sport event" here is pretty different from ours: it's like a party. "

"If you want a breathtaking foreshortening your place is the Twin Peaks hill, definitely the highest area of San Francisco. Magical during the day, amazing at night".

"The Lombard Street, the most winding and famous street in the world. It is so characteristic and emblematic, you will love the downhill, then hate the uphill ".

"This is the end of my tale: be curious, let your eyes dance, walk, explore, live every single moment of your journey, capture images, retain odors, be kind with all the people you meet and enjoy your trip as the best wellness experience".

Yours, Francesca

United States, east or west?

"I would like to make a trip to the US, do you recommend the east or the west side?" That's a typical question, especially if you are going to plan your first trip to the Us, and you have to choose between the two coasts, the east one and the west one. If tourists love the east, travelers definitely prefer the west. East and west are very different and if you want to know the United States better both these areas have to be visited at least once in a lifetime. On the east side, for example, the charm of a unique city like New York, or even the heat of Florida, the capital (Washington) or the spectacular New England (the region that has Boston as main city), on the other side simply.... the west. There is no need to add something else here. Or rather, we would have to write a book and there would not be enough two or three places to describe beautiful states like  California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and all the others. The west is unbeatable, inimitable ...

(New York City, New York)

The amount of places you can visit, the charm of a nature with few equals, but also the people (from Native Americans to cowboys) make the west area really amazing. It is very very huge and require at least four or five trips to visit all the states. We would like to try to draw up a list of "why choose the east" and "why choose the west", based on what we have seen so far and what we would like to visit in the future). This list should be as simple as possible and the only one advice is this: if you really cannot resist you should visit New York (3-4 days) but then take the first available flight and fly to the other side of the US ...

(Monument Valley, Arizona-Utah)

L'OVEST PERCHE'/THE WEST BECAUSE...

- because the grand canyon. monument valley, antelope canyon, horseshoe bend, bryce canyon, death valley, white sands (California, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico) are breathtaking. You can't find this kind of nature on the other side of the States. And if you don't know these places or you don't trust us, just "google" them...

- Las Vegas, the sin city. A unique place in the entire world, where entertainment and gambling are the main things. Here you'll find the best american hotels.

(Horseshoe bend - Arizona)

- driving along the roads that take you back in time, where the next village is 60-70 kilometers far and where a town is made by two houses, a gas station and a motel.

- Deserto, mare, laghi, montagne, città (San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas su tutte).

- desert, ocean, lakes, mountains, cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas above all). From the hot of the Death Valley to the cold of the Yosemite just driving for three hours.

- You'll be in touch with indians (not always friendly, but still an attaction) and drink a beer with cowboys in a saloon.

- You'll find on your way lots of ghost towns, abandoned after the gold rush or connected directly to the route 66. You barely realize that New York and the ghost towns are part of the same nation.

- West sunsets are unbelievable. Be assure that who are writing now won't be at the same place!

(a ghost town in California)

- the huge parks of Arizona and Utah will bring you in another dimension and never want to leave.

- in the north, but still in the west, there is the most beautiful park of the world: Yelllowstone. People don't talk about it so often because is not so easy to get to (even if it's the most visited park), but there is nothing like Yellowstone.

(in the next episode: the guide to the states of the West, all the place you can't miss)

United States, east or west? (part 2: Arizona)

Dici West e pensi all'Arizona.

When you think about west Arizona is definitely the first state that comes into your mind. The tipycal "on the road" will usually take you to the north of the state and California will certainly be main part of your trip. But the real west is... Arizona! Phoenix is the main city, its symbol is cactus and many are the places you can't miss, especially in the north but not only there. To describe Arizona as its best we have chosen the ten places we believe are the mirror of the state, avoiding the two most famous: Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. You don't need us to discover this famous places. We have visited some of the places of the top ten, many others have still to be visited and, to be honest, this top ten should easily be a top thirty, because in every corner od this state you can find something special. Our top ten is NOT A RANKING, we just want to help people if they want to visit Arizona, even one of the most "mexican state" (Texas is the other one) and not only because it's close to the borderline. Oh, well, in Tucson there are 362 sunny day every here, it certainly means that in Arizona is hot, very very hot. Especially in summer time.

1- ANTELOPE CANYON

Until few years ago Antelope Canyon was almost unknown, now it has become as famous as the best times to visit this beautiful canyon (near midday, when the light falls perpendicular into the canyon), is always sold out. There are two sides of the canyon, the upper side and the lower side: the first one is certainly more "touristy" and for photographers is basically like being in paradise. We are in Page, in the center-north of the state, near the Utah borderline.

2- HORSESHOE BEND

It's the Gooseneck state park (Utah) big brother, probably is even more beautiful... You'll be few meters far from the canyon, behind you there is the Colorado river. At sunset its colours are amazing. Horseshoe bend is just twenty minutes far from Page and from the Antelope Canyon

3- THE WAVE

This is a pearl, but only for the brave and for people who don't surrender when they get a "no" as an answer. The reason why just few people still know this beautiful place on earth is the fact that it's really difficult to get to. The trail is almost two hour long to get to The Wave and there are no special reports and indications on the path. But the great difficulty is to get permission: you have to win a lottery (the cost is about $ 5, non-refundable) holds by the Indians (who run the wave, Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley). But if you are lucky, The Wave at Coyote Butte (near Utah border, noth-west) will be one of the best experience of your entire life! If you go there: remember to bring with you much water, fruit, energy bars, a GPS, a detailed map and don't underestimate the desert.

4- I LUOGHI MITICI DELLA ROUTE 66/MYTHICAL PLACES OF ROUTE 66

The route 66 crosses from east to west the entire state dividing it into two parts. Here has become the story of the "mother road" and many things still refer to the past, when the route 66 was dominating the entire North American continent. And there are some towns, for example Seligman, Hackberry and Kingman, that will never forget it. You can't miss this towns and buy a souvenir!

5- SEDONA & OAK CREEK CANYON
E come dargli torto.

The American Capital of the New Age spirituality, here there is a little bit of art in the air and it is not uncommon to find writers and artists. But Sedona is also famous for its red rocks and its canyon (Oak Creek), considered by the Indians, Apaches and Yavapai, magical lands. And how can they be wrong? Sedona is just an hour and a half far from both the Grand Canyon and Phoenix.

6- CANYON DE CHELLY

- Canyon de Chelly (pronunciation "Scei") is for connoisseurs. If you love history, here you can find 3000 years. A culture that came before ours, we are talking about Anasazi Indians, who lived here from 700 after in beautiful houses carved into the rock. Nowadays this area is run by navajo.

7- I LUOGHI MITICI DEL VECCHIO WEST/MYTICAL PLACES OF THE WEST
Lì vivevano i fuorilegge...

If you have ever seen at least one western movie in your entire life, Monument Valley and Sedona are your places. Sure, but there is something more. Yuma (south west), famous for "the train to Yuma", Bisbee, Benson and especially Tombstone, where everything is still in the days of the old wild west.

8- SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK

- Near Tucson there is the Saguaro National Park, the park of the... Saguaro Cactus! You'll find a lot of them and, if you visit the park at sunrise or sunset, colour will be wonderful. There are two sides of the park: the first one is located west of Tucson, the second one east of Tucson. That's because everything in Arizona is very huge!

-After visiting Antelope Canyon a little bit of relaxation at Lake Powell is really deserved. A beautiful artificial lake in the middle of the canyons, a sort of oasis. The boat tour that will take you up to the rainbow bridge is very, very interesting but unfortunately not cheap (there is even a trail, but it takes two days to get to the rainbow bridge).

10 - PAINTED DESERT E PETRIFIED FOREST

A silent and colorful (every rock has a different color) desert and a forest where you can admire trunks once wooden and now crystallized. Arizona gives you unique natural experiences and this is well known. Entering from New Mexico along Route 66 those will be the first true Arizona "must see places"...
