USA SUMMER 2023 - ON THE ROAD ON THE EAST COAST: NEW YORK STATE, VERMONT, PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW JERSEY (Day 18: Cape May - New York City (New Jersey/New York State)

Con la solita malinconia "da ultimo giorno di scuola" è il momento, dopo 18 splendidi ed intensi giorni, di tornare a New York City e concludere anche questo incredibile viaggio, il 21esimo negli Stati Uniti. E' la costa del New Jersey, il Jersey Shore, ad accompagnarmi nell'ultima tappa, partendo dall' "America's Greatest Family Resort", ovvero la cittadina costiera di Ocean City, decisamente meno caotica e frenetica della vicina Atlantic City e dal particolarissimo Lucy The Elephant, semplicemente il più grande elefante al... mondo! 

With the usual "last day of school" blues, it is time, after 18 amazing and intense days, to return to New York City and end this incredible trip, the 21st in the United States. It is the New Jersey shore that accompanies me on the last stage, starting from "America's Greatest Family Resort," that is, the coastal town of Ocean City, definitely less chaotic and hectic than nearby Atlantic City and the very special Lucy The Elephant, simply the largest elephant in the world!

Risalente addirittura al 1881 e conosciuta in passato come Elephant Bazaar, Lucy fu costruita con l'intento di promuovere le vendite immobiliari dell'area ed attrarre il maggior numero di turisti. Una sorta di follia architettonica della piccola comunità di Margate City che però, ancora oggi, è l'attrazione più antica di tutto il Jersey Shore. 

NEXT STOP: Atlantic City (5.9 miles)

Dating as far back as 1881 and formerly known as Elephant Bazaar, Lucy was built with the intent of promoting real estate sales in the area and attracting the most tourists. A kind of architectural folly in the small community of Margate City, which is, however, still the oldest attraction in the entire Jersey Shore.

In lontananza s'intravedono già gli enormi casinò di Atlantic City, una delle città più celebri dell'intero stato del New Jersey, conosciuta per essere da sempre l'antagonista (riuscita meno bene...) di Las Vegas. Una città diversa dalle altre, aggrappata forse un po' troppo al suo illustre passato, ma che può essere apprezzata anche da chi non è appassionato di gioco d'azzardo. I visitatori potranno, infatti, passeggiare lungo il carinissimo "boardwalk", lungo ben 4 miglia, e raggiungere lo Steel Pier ed il suo luna park, fare shopping al Tanger Outlet at The Walk, o apprezzare la natura del Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge nella vicina Galloway. Il rifugio protegge quasi 50mila acri di habitat costieri e zone paludose, all'interno dei quali vivono ben 322 specie di uccelli. Vi basterà percorrere la strada sterrata che attraversa la riserva, o percorrere alcuni sentieri, per ammirare moltissime di queste specie. 

NEXT STOP: Historic Smithville (12.5 miles)

Ma il luogo che più mi ha colpito di questa ultima tappa è sicuramente Historic Smithville, un pittoresco villaggio coloniale in cui non mancano negozi particolari, ristoranti e giostrine per i più piccoli come ad esempio il trenino panoramico. 

You can see in the distance the enormous casinos of Atlantic City, one of the most famous cities in the entire state of New Jersey, known for having always been the antagonist of the most famous Las Vegas. A city unlike any other, probably too rooted in the illustrious past, but can also be appreciated even by those who are not gambling enthusiasts. Visitors can, in fact, stroll along the very pretty 4-mile-long boardwalk to Steel Pier and its amusement park, shop at the Tanger Outlet at The Walk, or appreciate the nature at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in nearby Galloway. The refuge protects nearly 50,000 acres of coastal habitats and wetlands, within which as many as 322 species of birds live. You need only drive the dirt road through the reserve, or walk along some of the trails, to see many of these species. 

NEXT STOP: Historic Smithville (12.5 miles)

But the place that impressed me most on this last stage is definitely Historic Smithville, a picturesque colonial village where there is no shortage of quaint stores, restaurants and rides for the little ones such as the scenic train.

E' un autentico salto nel tempo, con bellissime strade ciottolate e negozi incredibili: troverete oggetti d'antiquariato vittoriani e aceto balsamico invecchiato in botte, fantastiche candele di cera d'api e sì, anche un vero negozio italiano (A Tour of Italy - https://www.italyinsmithville.com/) con autentici prodotti italiani. 

It's an authentic step back in time, with beautiful cobblestone streets and incredible stores: you'll find Victorian antiques and barrel-aged balsamic vinegar, fantastic beeswax candles, and yes, even a real Italian store (A Tour of Italy - https://www.italyinsmithville.com/) with authentic Italian products.

Ed è proprio qui che ho incontrato due splendide sorelle "italiane d'America", cresciute nel più italiano degli stati americani ma che non hanno dimenticato l'Italia e la loro casa. E solo l'aver parlato italiano con loro per 10 minuti, mentre acquistavano taralli provenienti dalla puglia o borse di pregevole fattura, "made my day" come si dice da queste parti. Mi ha reso felicissimo. Perchè, alla fine, per quanto ami gli Stati Uniti, casa è sempre casa...

NEXT STOP: Verrazzano Bridge (100 miles)

And it was here that I met two wonderful "Italian-American" sisters, who grew up in the most Italian of American states but have not forgotten Italy and... their home. And just speaking Italian with them for 10 minutes, while buying taralli from Puglia or bags of fine workmanship, just made my day. Because, in the end, as much as I love the United States, home is still home....

Siamo ormai vicini alla fine di questo incredibile racconto, c'è ancora qualche chicca da raccontare prima di salutarci. Partendo dalla graziosa comunità di Spring Lake, apprezzatissima meta vacanziera per gli americani e la vicinissima Lake Como con il suo... Lago di Como. No. non è uno scherzo, è la solita incredibile storia che può arrivare da un unico posto al mondo, gli Stati Uniti d'America. La cittadina, infatti, era conosciuta fino a 10 anni fa come South Belmar, prima che i cittadini decidessero di cambiare nome in Lake Como. E percorrendo la North Boulevard potrete arrivare alle sponde del lago, che ovviamente si chiama Lake Como. E, se avrete optato per la deviazione, allora non perdetevi le donuts di Dune Doughnuts and Bagels, tra le migliori dello stato ed il gelato di Hoffman's Ice Cream. Prima di lasciare lo stato, l'ultimo stop che vi consiglio di fare lungo la costa è per ammirare le spiagge bianche di Ashbury Park, nel nord del Jersey Shore, e per fare due passi lungo l'Ashbury Park Boardwalk. 

We are now close to the end of this incredible tale; there are a few more tidbits to tell you before we say goodbye. Starting with the lovely community of Spring Lake, a popular holiday destination for Americans and the very nearby Lake Como with its... Lake Como. No. it is not a joke, it is the usual incredible story that can only come from one place in the world, the United States of America. The town, in fact, was known until 10 years ago as South Belmar, before the citizens decided to change its name to Lake Como. And by driving down North Boulevard you can get to the shores of the lake, which of course is called Lake Como. Just like the italian Lake Como! And, if you are willing to follow this detour, then don't miss the donuts from Dune Doughnuts and Bagels, among the best in the state and the ice cream from Hoffman's Ice Cream. Before leaving the state, the last stop I recommend you make along the coast is to admire the white beaches of Ashbury Park on the North Jersey Shore and to take a stroll along the Ashbury Park Boardwalk.

Se, come me, siete diretti al Jfk International Airport, una volta tornati nel New York State, vi troverete a girovagare per Staten Island, spesso soprannominata "il borgo dimenticato" in quanto distretto più meridionale dello stato di New York e meno attrattivo a livello turistico. Ma, se deciderete di passare da queste parti, non perdetevi le bellissime aree verdi e soprattutto la città di Tottenville, con i suoi edifici storici, i tantissimi ristoranti ed un'incantevole natura. E non dimenticatevi, prima di superare il Verrazzano Bridge, di fermarvi al Fort Wadsworth - Gateway National Recreation Area, una delle più antiche aree militari della nazione. Da qui, tra le altre cose, potrete scattare stupende foto al Verrazzano Bridge, la degna conclusione di un viaggio che mi ha fatto, dopo oltre 10 anni di incursioni americane, innamorare della east coast. 

If, like me, you are headed to Jfk International Airport, once back in upstate New York, you will find yourself wandering around Staten Island, often nicknamed "the forgotten suburb" as the southernmost borough in New York State and the least touristically attractive. But, if you do decide to stop by, don't miss the beautiful green areas and especially the town of Tottenville, with its historic buildings, plenty of restaurants and lovely nature. And don't forget, before you cross the Verrazzano Bridge, to stop at Fort Wadsworth - Gateway National Recreation Area, one of the oldest military areas in the nation. From here, among other things, you can take stupendous photos of the Verrazzano Bridge, a fitting conclusion to a trip that made me, after more than 10 years spent visiting the United States, fall in love with the East Coast!
