Exploring West of Canada: 17 days through British Columbia and Alberta (Day 2: Vancouver - Lynn Canyon Park and Stanley Park)

Il viaggio comincia da Vancouver, una delle più affascinanti città del Nord America. Se non fosse per gli inverni freddini e piovosi, Vancouver sarebbe una di quella città perfette per chi vuole un po' di tutto: già, perchè qui non manca davvero nulla, dalle comodità delle grandi città ad uno skyline notevole, dalla natura incontaminata dei suoi dintorni ad uno dei parchi più belli al mondo, dalle tante comunità (soprattutto quella asiatica) a quell'apertura mentale che spesso manca dalle nostre parti nel vecchio continente. Eppure della vecchia, Vancouver, quella figlia del capitano della marina reale britannica (che vi sbarcò nel 1792) George Vancouver è rimasto ben poco (qualche edificio e Stanley Park), complice un gravissimo incendio avvenuto nel 1886, il Great Fire, che durò solo minuti ma distrusse l'intera città...

The journey begins in Vancouver, one of the most fascinating cities in North America. If it weren't for the cold and rainy winters, Vancouver would be one of those perfect cities for those who want a little bit of everything: yes, because there is really nothing lacking here, from big-city conveniences to a remarkable skyline, from the unspoiled nature of its surroundings to one of the most beautiful parks in the world, from the many communities (especially the Asian one) to the open-mindedness that is often lacking in the old continent. Yet,of the old Vancouver, which took its name from the British Royal Navy captain (who landed there in 1792) George Vancouver very little remains (a few buildings and Stanley Park), thanks to a very serious fire which took place in1886, the Great Fire, which lasted only minutes but destroyed the entire city...

L'avventura, complice il fuso orario, comincia ad inizio mattinata da North Vancouver, quindi oltre il Vancouver Harbor, dopo un viaggio in bus di circa un'oretta (con due cambi: i numeri di riferimento sono il 228 ed il 229) dal centro città. La prima meta è il sottovalutatissimo ma imperdibile Lynn Canyon Park, il "cugino" del ben più famoso (e fin troppo costoso...) Capilano che visiteremo il giorno successivo. Qui, invece, si entra gratis e ci si ritrova in compagnia di un quinto dei visitatori che prendono d'assalto il Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Il Centro Ecologico di Lynn Valley è il perfetto punto di partenza per l'esplorazione del parco che, seguendo il trail principale che prende il via a ridosso del Cafè, vi porterà immediatamente a superare il Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, il ponte sospeso costruito nel 1912 che oscilla 50 metri sopra il canyon.

The adventure, thanks to the time zone, begins early in the morning from North Vancouver, then past Vancouver Harbor, after a bus ride of about an hour (with two changes: reference numbers are 228 and 229) from downtown. The first destination is the underrated but not-to-be-missed Lynn Canyon Park, the "cousin" of the far more famous (and far too expensive...) Capilano that we will visit the next day. Here, however, admission is free and you'll find yourself in the company of one-fifth of the visitors who storm Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The Lynn Valley Ecology Center is the perfect starting point for exploring the park, which, following the main trail that kicks off behind the Café, will immediately take you over the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge, the suspension bridge built in 1912 that swings 50 meters above the canyon.

Una volta superato, entrerete nel cuore del parco e del Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and 30 Foot Pool Loop Trail, un percorso circolare di 1.6 miglia che consente al visitatore di raggiungere gli altri highlights del parco. Svoltando a sinistra dopo il ponte, vi ritroverete in un fitto bosco (attenzione sempre agli orsi) e che conduce alla "pool" dove nelle giornate più calde troverete diversi locali cercare refrigerio nelle sue acque decisamente fredde. 

Once passed, visitors enter the heart of the park and the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and 30 Foot Pool Loop Trail, a 1.6-mile circular trail that allows visitors to reach the park's other highlights. Turning left after the bridge, you will find yourself in a dense forest (always watch out for bears) that leads to the "pool" where on hot days you will find several locals seek refreshment in its decidedly cold waters.

Lasciata alle spalle la "piscina", dovrete salire qualche gradino di una scala in legno per proseguire il percorso circolare che, proprio alla fine, vi regalerà la vista sulle "Twin Falls", visibili dal "Twin Falls Bridge". Fate attenzione ai salmoni, perchè è il punto più lontano in cui questi pesci possono nuotare all'interno del Lynn Creek, complici proprio le cascate che impediscono loro di andare oltre. Da qui una breve, ma intensa, risalita vi ricondurrà all'inizio del sentiero.

Leaving the pool behind, you will have to climb a few steps of a wooden staircase to continue the circular path that, at the very end, will give you a view of the Twin Falls, visible from the Twin Falls Bridge. Watch out for salmon, because this is the furthest point where these fish can swim within Lynn Creek. From there, a short, but intense, ascent will lead you back to the beginning of the trailhead.

STANLEY PARK, UNO DEI PARCHI PIU' BELLI DEL NORDAMERICA

Il Project for Public Spaces l'ha classificato come il sedicesimo migliore parco del mondo e il sesto del Nordamerica e noi non possiamo che concordare. A due passi da downtown, ma allo stesso tempo capace di regalare splendide viste sulla baia, la Burrard Inlet, Stanley Park (8 milioni di visitatori all'anno) ha davvero tutto quello che sia un turista che un abitante di Vancouver potrebbe desiderare. A partire dalle spiagge, passando per il suo lungo-mare di 8.8 km che fa parte del Seawall, ovvero un percorso di 22 km (il più lungo del mondo) che parte dal centro di Vancouver, e precisamente dal Canada Place, e passando intorno al parco, prosegue lungo la spiaggia di English Bay e termina nella spiaggia di Kitsilano Beach. E poi una piscina, una laguna, alberi vecchi di un secolo che raggiungono anche i 70 metri di altezza, una splendida pista ciclabile ed ancora, laghi (il "Beaver lake"), fiumi e tantissimi luoghi del tutto particolari. Come ad esempio il Vancouver Aquarium, la Stanley Park Railway ed il 9 o'clock gun. Noi abbiamo percorso gli interi 8 km dell'argine, cominciando la nostra avventura da sud, ovvero dalla English Bay e cercando di toccare tutti i luoghi principali del parco dedicandogli un intero pomeriggio, ma Stanley Park è uno di quei parchi che meriterebbero molto, molto più tempo.

STANLEY PARK, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PARKS IN NORTH AMERICA

The Project for Public Spaces ranked it as the 16th best park in the world and the sixth best in North America, and we can only agree with that. Just a stone's throw from downtown, yet at the same time capable of giving splendid views of the bay (Burrard Inlet), Stanley Park (8 million visitors a year) really does have everything both a tourist and a Vancouver resident could want. Starting with the beaches, passing through its 8.8-kilometer-coastal trail that is part of the Seawall, the 22-kilometer-long pathway (the longest in the world) that starts in downtown Vancouver, specifically Canada Place, and passing around the park, continues along English Bay beach and ends in Kitsilano Beach. And then a swimming pool, a lagoon, century-old trees that reach up to 70 meters in height, a beautiful bike path, and again, lakes (the Beaver lake), rivers, and lots of special places. Such as the Vancouver Aquarium, the Stanley Park Railway and the 9 o'clock gun. We rode the entire 8 km of the trail, starting our adventure from the south (English Bay) and trying to touch all the main places in the park in a whole afternoon. Well, we must also say that Stanley Park is one of those parks that deserve much, much more time.

COSA VEDERE A STANLEY PARK? I 13 LUOGHI IMPERDIBILI

Stanley Park è un parco che si può tranquillamente visitare come se fosse un'attrazione, fermandosi ad ogni luogo che rendono questo polmone verde unico nel suo genere, oppure goderselo in tutta tranquillità come fanno da sempre i cittadini di Vancouver. Noi facciamo parte della prima categoria, ovvero quelli che in un intero pomeriggio hanno girovagato in lungo e in largo cercando di vedere il più possibile, dai luoghi iconici alle chicche nascoste. Se doveste, come noi, avventurarvi alla scoperta del parco, consigliamo questo itinerario che, come abbiamo già detto, prende via dal versante sud, quello di English Bay. 

WHAT TO SEE IN STANLEY PARK? THE 13 MUST-SEE PLACES

Stanley Park is a park that you can easily visit as if it were an attraction, stopping at every place that makes this green lung unique, or enjoy it quietly as Vancouver citizens have always done. We belong to the first category: we spent an entire afternoon trying to see as much as possible, from iconic places to hidden gems. If you were, like us, venture out to explore the park, we recommend this itinerary, which, as we have already mentioned, starts at the south side, that of English Bay.

1) English Bay Beach

Chiamata anche First Beach è la spiaggia più popolata del downtown di Vancouver. Al suo esterno non potrete non notare la A-maze-ing Laughter, una scultura in bronzo patinato composta da 14 statue alte 3 metri che ritraggono l'artista, Yue Minjun, in risate isteriche. E' proprio da qui che comincia il nostro viaggio alla scoperta di Stanley Park...

1) English Bay Beach

Also called First Beach, it is the most populated beach in downtown Vancouver. Just outside it, you cannot fail to notice the A-maze-ing Laughter, a patinated bronze sculpture composed of 14 10-foot-tall statues depicting the artist, Yue Minjun, in hysterical laughter. It is from here that the journey to discover Stanley Park begins....

2) Second beach swimming pool

Una piscina a ridosso del mare. Esatto, avete capito bene. Quando fa caldo, ed ultimamente in estate comincia a far parecchio caldo a Vancouver, i locali si riversano in questa piscina riscaldata (ingresso 6.66 dollari) con vista sulla baia.

A swimming pool by the sea. That's right, you read that right. When it's hot, and lately in summer it's starting to get pretty hot in Vancouver, locals flock to this heated pool (admission $6.66) overlooking the bay.

3) Viewpoint Burrard Inlet

Burrard Inlet è un fiordo costiero che si è formato durante l'era glaciale e separa Vancouver ed il resto della penisola di Burrard dalle North Shore Mountains. Da qui si gode della miglior vista sul fiordo, la baia e sulle montagne.

Burrard Inlet is a coastal fjord that was formed during the Ice Age and separates Vancouver and the rest of the Burrard Peninsula from the North Shore Mountains. From here, visitors can enjoy the best view of the fjord, the inlet, and the mountains. 

4) Hollow Tree

Vi abbiamo detto dei tanti alberi  che compongono la foresta di Stanley Park, alcuni dei quali davvero antichi. Il più famoso è l' "albero cavo" ( Hollow Tree), 18 metri di diametro, che alle spalle ha 8 secoli di vita. Oggi potrete ammirare tuttavia solo il tronco spoglio, ben conservato dopo diversi restauri. Se siete appassionati, non perdete neppure il "National Geographic Tree" ("albero del National Geographic"), battezzato così perché fu ritratto nel numero dell'ottobre 1978 della rivista.

4) Hollow Tree

We have told you about the many trees that make up Stanley Park Forest, some of which are really old. The most famous is the "hollow tree", 18 meters in diameter, which looks back on 800 years. However, today you can just admire only the bare trunk, well preserved after several restorations. If you are a fan, don't miss the "National Geographic Tree" either, so named because it was portrayed in the October 1978 issue of the magazine.

5) Siwash Rock

La Siwash Rock è una celebre formazione rocciosa, alta circa 15 metri, che si è formata 32 milioni di anni fa. La struttura è infatti di basalto, e si sarebbe formata per raffreddamento del magma fuoriuscito da una spaccatura nella crosta terrestre.

6) Prospect Point Lookout

Uno dei punti panoramici più affascinanti, con vista sul Lions Gate. Al suo fianco troverete un negozio di souvenir ed un bar. 

7) Stanley park railway

Con i suoi oltre 200 mila visitatori all'anno, Stanley Park Railway è una delle attrazioni principali di Stanley Park. Il tracciato lungo 2 chilometri, si snoda attraverso la foresta che fu colpita dal Typhoon Freda, la tempesta più devastante della storia di Vancouver del 1962, e regala ai visitatori un viaggio di 15 minuti circa su un treno replica fedele della Canadian Pacific Railway Engine n. 374, famoso per esser stato il primo treno passeggeri intercontinentale del Canada (6.80 dollari).

8) Lumberman's Arch

Lumberman's Arch è un famoso luogo di incontro nello Stanley Park, poichè molto semplice da trovare per chiunque grazie ai suoi due tronchi posizionati come se fossero un arco. 

5) Siwash Rock

Siwash Rock is a famous rock formation, about 15 meters high, that formed 32 million years ago. The structure was made by cooling of magma that escaped from a rift in the Earth's crust.

6) Prospect Point Lookout

One of the most fascinating view points, overlooking the Lions Gate. At its side you will find a gift store and a cafe. 

7) Stanley park railway

With its more than 200,000 visitors a year, Stanley Park Railway is one of Stanley Park's main attractions. The 2-kilometer-long track winds through the forest that was hit by Typhoon Freda, the most devastating storm in Vancouver's history (1962), and gives visitors an approximately 15-minute ride on a faithful replica train of Canadian Pacific Railway Engine No. 374, famous for being Canada's first intercontinental passenger train ($6.80).

8) Lumberman's Arch

Lumberman's Arch is a famous meeting place in Stanley Park, as it is very easy for anyone to find because of its two logs positioned as if they were an arch.

9) SS Empress of Japan Figurehead e Girl in a Suit Statue

RMS Empress of Japan è una replica di quella che era considerata "la Regina del Pacifico". Parliamo di un transatlantico, nominata anche Imperatrice del Pacifico, che fu capace di attraversare regolarmente la rotta trans-Pacifico tra la costa occidentale del Canada e l'Estremo Oriente fino al 1922. Girl in a Wetsuit, che troverete una manciata di metri dopo, è invece una scultura in bronzo a grandezza naturale del 1972 raffigurante una donna in muta su una roccia in mezzo alla baia.

9) SS Empress of Japan Figurehead and Girl in a Suit Statue

RMS Empress of Japan is a replica of what was considered "the Queen of the Pacific." We are talking about an ocean liner, also named Empress of the Pacific, which was able to regularly cross the trans-Pacific route between the west coast of Canada and the Far East until 1922. Girl in a Wetsuit, on the other hand, which is located a handful of meters later, is a life-size bronze sculpture from 1972 depicting a woman in a wetsuit on a rock in the middle of the bay.

10) Totem poles 

I totem sono di casa qui a Stanley Park. Questo perchè l'intero territorio di Stanley Park è stato un tempo possedimento dei primi abitanti aborigeni della zona che negli anni hanno tramandato le loro tradizioni.

11) Brockton Point Lighthouse

E' un Faro risalente al 1890. Possiede una torre quadrata, dipinta di bianco con una striscia rossa orizzontale.

10) Totem poles

Totem poles are at home here in Stanley Park. That's because the entire Stanley Park area was once owned by the area's early aboriginal inhabitants, who have passed down their traditions over the years.

11) Brockton Point Lighthouse

This is a lighthouse dating back to 1890. It has a square tower, painted white with a horizontal red stripe.

12) 9 O'Clock Gun

Il 9 O'Clock Gun è forse l'attrazione più strana di tutto Stanley Park. E' un cannone attivo (ogni sera alle 21 spara un colpo), che originariamente era usato per avvertire i pescatori della chiusura delle attività la domenica alle ore 18. Un cartello, situato sul suo lato, avverte chi è di passaggio intorno alle 9, di restare vigili perchè il rumore è decisamente violento. Provare per credere...

12) 9 O'Clock Gun

The 9 O'Clock Gun is perhaps the strangest attraction in all of Stanley Park. It is an active cannon (it fires a shot every night at 9 p.m.) that was originally used to warn fishermen of the closing of business on Sundays at 6 p.m. A sign, located on its side, warns those passing by around 9 a.m. to remain vigilant because the noise is downright violent. seeing is believing...

13) Lost Lagoon

La Lost Lagoon ("laguna perduta") è un bacino di 16,6 ettari di superficie situata nei pressi dell'ingresso del parco provenendo da Georgia Street. Attorno al bacino nidificano diverse specie di uccelli, inclusi cigni, paperi e aironi.

DOVE CENARE A VANCOUVER? 

PROPOSTA NUMERO 1 - THE IRISH HEATHER SHEBEEN

Durante il racconto del viaggio in Canada, proveremo anche a darvi qualche consiglio su "dove cenare". Perchè raramente abbiamo trovato tanta qualità nel Nordamerica come in Canada, provando anche alcune cucine che fino a questo on the road, non avevamo mai assaggiato. L'esordio è in terra irlandese (irlandesi che da queste parti, sono davvero di casa...) per un fish and chips ed un buon burger (oltre ovviamente alla birra guinness) in un locale dalle forti tinte "irish". Il The Irish Heather Shebeen si trova a Chinatown, che negli ultimi anni è decisamente in decadenza e poco affascinante, ma rimane sempre una delle icone di Vancouver...

13) Lost Lagoon

The Lost Lagoon is a 16.6-hectare basin located near the park entrance coming from Georgia Street. Several species of birds nest around the basin, including swans, goslings, and herons.

WHERE TO DINE IN VANCOUVER? 

PROPOSAL NUMBER 1 - THE IRISH HEATHER SHEBEEN

During the story of the trip to Canada, we will also try to give you some advice on "where to dine." Because we've never found so much quality in North America as in Canada and we've even tried some cuisines we had never tasted. The first evening we've experienced the irish cuisine (irish are really at home here...) for a delicious fish and chips and a good burger (as well as guinness beer, of course) in a place with strong Irish tints. The Irish Heather Shebeen is located in Chinatown, which is definitely decaying and unglamorous in recent years, but still remains one of Vancouver's iconic...
