Solitamente le tappe della Route 66 sono molto lunghe. Trecento chilometri, a volte anche quattrocento, spesi a rincorrere ogni singolo tratto d'asfalto di questa strada davvero magica per restare all'interno dei tempi di viaggio previsti. Ma non questa volta. Già, perchè sono soltanto centosettanta i chilometri che separano le due città più importanti dell'Oklahoma, Tulsa ed Oklahoma City, a cui abbiamo voluto dedicare ampio spazio, tra musei d'arte e quelli in cui perdi il contatto con la realtà, tra imponenti State Capitol e parchi dove vorresti spendere intere giornate. Perchè se da una parte è proprio vero che se non fosse per la Route 66, sarebbero davvero pochi i turisti a passare dalle parti di Tulsa ed OKC, dall'altra entrambe le città sono tra le più in crescita degli interi Stati Uniti. E, soprattutto Oklahoma City, sta vivendo una crescita davvero esponenziale. Tanto per citare un paio di esempi, gli Oklahoma City Thunder hanno appena vinto il titolo nella Nba (2025), alcune delle gare olimpiche di Los Angeles 2028 verranno disputate proprio qui, a centinaia e centinaia di miglia di distanza dalla "città degli angeli"...

The stages of the journey along the Route 66 are usually very long. Two hundred miles, sometimes even three hundred, spent chasing every single stretch of asphalt along this truly magical road in order to stay within the planned travel times. But not this time. That's right, because only 100 miles separate the two most important cities in Oklahoma, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, between art museums and those where you lose touch with reality, between imposing State Capitols and parks where you would like to spend entire days. Because while it's true that if it weren't for Route 66, very few tourists would pass through Tulsa and OKC, both cities are among the fastest growing in the entire United States. Oklahoma City, in particular, is experiencing truly exponential growth. To cite just a couple of examples, the Oklahoma City Thunder have just won the NBA title (2025), and some of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will be held right here, hundreds and hundreds of miles away from the ‘City of Angels’...

TULSA, NON SOLO PETROLIO - ALLA SCOPERTA DI UNA CITTA' SORPRENDENTE
Vi avevo già accennato nel post precedente di come fosse sbocciato l'amore, sia mio che di Roberta, per Tulsa. C'era voluto un secondo viaggio nella capitale americana del petrolio per conoscerla e capirla davvero, ma alla fine dei conti ha vinto lei. Ed il consiglio spassionato per tutti i viaggiatori della Route 66 è proprio quello di fermarvi un po' di tempo nella secondà città per importanza dello stato e possibilmente di spenderci anche la notte, in modo tale da avere a disposizione in tardo pomeriggio e la mattina successiva per la visita di una città che sa regalare tanto soprattutto se amate arte e natura. Cosa vedere dunque a Tulsa in un giorno?
TULSA, NOT JUST OIL - DISCOVERING A SURPRISING CITY
I already mentioned in my previous post how Roberta and I fell in love with Tulsa. It took a second trip to the American oil capital to really get to know and understand this city, but eventually Tulsa won. And my impartial advice to all Route 66 travelers is to stop for a while in the state's second most important city and, if possible, spend the night there, so that you can spend the late afternoon and the following morning to visit a city that has so much to offer, especially if you love art and nature. So what is there to see in Tulsa in one day?
Noi l'esplorazione della città l'abbiamo cominciata nel pomeriggio, concludendola poi al mattino successivo. Imparerete subito che la città non solo è tra le più vivibili di tutti gli Stati Uniti (come vi abbiamo accennato nel post precedente), ma che è un centro culturale ed artistico davvero importante: per questo motivo, tra le tante cose da fare e da vedere a Tulsa, il consiglio è proprio quello di cominciare da uno dei musei d'arte più apprezzati di tutti gli States, il Philbrook Museum of Art, visitato da oltre centomila persone ogni anno. Situato nella splendida villa appartenuta al magnate del petrolio Waite Phillips (Tulsa ed il Petrolio, un binomio totale!), vanta un'incredibile collezione permanente di opere d’arte africana, europea, americana e asiatica, oltre ad una ricca galleria di antichità.
We started exploring the city in the afternoon and finished the following morning. You will quickly learn that the city is not only one of the most livable in the United States (as we mentioned in our previous post), but also a truly important cultural and artistic center: for this reason, among the many things to do and see in Tulsa, we recommend starting with one of the most popular art museums in the United States, the Philbrook Museum of Art, visited by over 100,000 people every year. Located in the beautiful mansion that belonged to oil magnate Waite Phillips (Tulsa and oil, a perfect combination!), it boasts an incredible permanent collection of African, European, American, and Asian art, as well as a rich gallery of antiquities.
Ma la grande peculiarità del Philbrook Museum è il suo terreno circostante, ricco di giardini colorati, ruscelli, sculture, diversi sentieri e nel complesso una vegetazione che consente ai visitatori di concedersi un momento di tranquillità.
But the Philbrook Museum's most distinctive feature is its surrounding grounds, which are full of colorful gardens, streams, sculptures, various paths, and overall vegetation that allows visitors to enjoy a moment of tranquility.
Arte, petrolio e natura. Sì, a Tulsa il trittico vincente è proprio questo. Ed una visita della città non può prescindere dal parco che a parer mio entra di diritto nella top 10 degli spazi verdi a stelle e strisce. Ed è proprio qui che abbiamo deciso di chiudere la prima giornata a Tulsa, non lontano dal Philbrook Museum. Siamo al Gathering Place, uno splendido parco cittadino che sorge sulle sponde del fiume Arkansas (spingetevi fino alla passerella sul fiume), dinamico ed interattivo, ricco di attrazioni sparse lungo i 100 acri della struttura.
Art, oil, and nature. Yes, in Tulsa, this is the winning trio. And no visit to the city would be complete without a tour of the park, which, in my opinion, is one of the top 10 green spaces in the United States. And this is where we decided to end our first day in Tulsa, not far from the Philbrook Museum. We are at the Gathering Place, a beautiful city park on the banks of the Arkansas River (make sure you visit the footbridge over the river), dynamic and interactive, full of attractions scattered throughout the 100 acres of the park.
Troverete il Chapman Adventure Playground (con i suoi scivoli, installazioni per l'arrampicata e giochi d'acqua), il Williams Lodge, la darsena, il parco giochi acquatico, i campi sportivi all'aperto, lo skate park, nonché numerosi sentieri tra cui muoversi da una zona all’altro del parco. A Gathering Place è possibile anche noleggiare una canoa, un kayak o un pedalò, fermarsi per una pausa in uno dei punti di ristoro, rilassarsi su Willof Beach o ammirare alcune opere d'arte ospitate all’interno del Cabinet of Wonder.
You will find the Chapman Adventure Playground (with its slides, climbing structures, and water features), Williams Lodge, the boat dock, the water playground, outdoor sports fields, skate park, and numerous trails connecting different areas of the park. At Gathering Place, you can also rent a canoe, kayak, or paddleboat, stop for a break at one of the refreshment points, relax on Willof Beach, or admire some of the artwork housed in the Cabinet of Wonder.
La mattina successiva, o almeno le primissime due ore della giornata, le abbiamo invece dedicate ad una visita veloce delle restanti attrazioni della città. Una delle cose da vedere a Tulsa è sicuramente il Golden Driller Statue, l'enorme effige di un operaio degli impianti petroliferi, il simbolo fotografico della città. Se per caso doveste per un attimo dimenticarvi del legame tra Tulsa ed il petrolio, vi basterà alzare gli occhi al cielo ed ammirare l'opera alta ben 23 metri e del peso di quasi 20 tonnellate.
The next morning, or at least the first two hours of the day, we visited the city's remaining attractions. One of the must-see sights in Tulsa is undoubtedly the Golden Driller Statue, the enormous effigy of an oil field worker, which is the city's photographic symbol. If you happen to forget for a moment the link between Tulsa and oil, just look up at the sky and admire the 23-meter-high statue, which weighs almost 20 tons.
Il legame con la Route 66 è invece ricordato da due Muffler Man, il Buck Atom Space Cowboy ed il The Friendly Lumberjack (l’amichevole taglialegna) della Meadow Gold Mack. A ridosso di downtown, merita una sosta veloce anche la Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza, un tributo al "padre della Route 66". Il monumento si compone delle bandiere degli 8 stati attraversati dalla Route 66, che circondano due sculture in bronzo, simboleggianti l’unione tra est e ovest. La pima, l’ovest, raffigura un carro trainato da cavalli, l’altra, l’est, un’auto con a bordo l’attore di origine cherokee Will Rogers, il figlio prediletto dell'Oklahoma.
The bond with Route 66 is commemorated by two Muffler Men, Buck Atom Space Cowboy and The Friendly Lumberjack from Meadow Gold Mack. Close to downtown, Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza, a tribute to the “father of Route 66,” is also worth a quick stop. The monument consists of the flags of the eight states criossed by the Route 66 surrounding two bronze sculptures symbolizing the union between east and west. The first, representing the west, depicts a horse-drawn wagon, while the other, representing the east, depicts a car carrying Cherokee actor Will Rogers, Oklahoma's favorite son.
La Route 66 ha di nuovo preso il sopravvento e, una volta ripresa la Mother Road sul lato ovest del fiume Arkansas, ci fermiamo al Route 66 Historical Village, un piccolo museo a cielo aperto realizzato nel luogo dove, nel 1901, venne eretta la prima trivella per estrarre il petrolio a Tulsa. Anche la Main Street of America rende omaggio al petrolio, così importante nella città di Tulsa: qui troverete, infatti, una torre di perforazione petrolifera alta 59 metri, posizionata accanto al bellisismo visitor center del Route 66 Historical Village, costruito come se fosse una stazione di servizio degli anni Venti.
Route 66 has taken over again and, once we rejoin the Mother Road on the west side of the Arkansas River, we stop at the Route 66 Historical Village, a small open-air museum built on the site where the first oil rig was erected in Tulsa in 1901. Main Street of America also pays tribute to oil, which is so important to the city of Tulsa. Here you will find a 59-meter-high oil derrick next to the beautiful Route 66 Historical Village visitor center, built to look like a 1920s gas station.
E non potevano mancare ovviamente i binari, e nemmeno la locomotiva a gasolio Frisco 4500 del 1942, con anche una carrozza passeggeri, un carro cisterna per il trasporto del petrolio ed un vagone di coda. Dal 2021, nel villaggio è stato aggiunto anche il Red Fork Depot, una struttura che funge sia da museo sia da location per eventi.
And of course, they could not miss the tracks, as well as the 1942 Frisco 4500 diesel locomotive, complete with a passenger car, an oil tanker car, and a caboose. In 2021, the village also added the Red Fork Depot, a structure that serves as both a museum and an event venue.
DA TULSA A OKLAHOMA CITY, TRA BIBITE GASSATE ED ENORMI FIENILI...
Come vi abbiamo anticipato, il tratto che separa Tulsa con Oklahoma City non è particolarmente lungo. Attraverserete un'area ricca di piccole comunità, tante trivelle, pascoli e numerosi ranch. Ed anche qualche iconica attrazione, alcune delle quali legate alla Route 66.
FROM TULSA TO OKC, BETWEEN SODAD AND HUGE BARNS...
As we mentioned earlier, the stretch between Tulsa and Oklahoma City is not particularly long. You will pass through an area rich in small communities, lots of oil rigs and numerous ranches. There are also some iconic attractions, some of which are linked to Route 66.
A Sapulpa non potrete non notare, a ridosso di un piccolo museo sull'automobile legato alla Mother Road, la World Largest Pump, la pompa di benzina più grande al mondo (dopotutto siamo o no sulla Route 66?...), mentre a Stroud, la città protagonista delle rapine del fuorilegge Henry "BearCat" Starr nel 1915, non perdetevi il Rock Cafe, un diner davvero storico, costruito nel 1939 con le pietre prelevate durante la costruzione della Route 66 stessa. Il Rock Cafe è stato capace di sopravvivere alla fine della Route 66, alla crisi petrolifera ed ai tornado diventando una delle attività più longeve della strada più famosa al mondo.
In Sapulpa, you can't miss the World's Largest Gas Pump, located next to a small museum dedicated to automobiles and the Mother Road (after all, we are on Route 66!). while in Stroud, the town where outlaw Henry “BearCat” Starr carried out his robberies in 1915, don't miss the Rock Cafe, a truly historic diner built in 1939 with stones taken from the construction of Route 66 itself. The Rock Cafe has survived the end of Route 66, the oil crisis, and tornadoes, becoming one of the longest-running businesses on the most famous road in the world.
Alle porte di Oklahoma City, nella comunità di Arcadia, vi troverete di fronte, a distanza di pochi metri una dall'altra, due iconiche attrazioni del tratto che collega Tulsa con Oklahoma City. Sulla destra troverete il The Old Round Barn (che rispetto al 2016 ha subìto notevoli migliorie), costruito nel 1898 dal contadino locale William Harrison Odor. E' alto 18 metri ed è largo 13. Sulla sua forma del tutto particolare, lo scrittore William Kaszynski scrive che "La ragione per la quale il Round Barn sia circolare rimane un mistero. I tornado sono molto frequenti nelle grandi pianure e l’Oklahoma è mediamente colpito da 47 tornado l’anno. Così molti teorizzano che un fienile dalla forma circolare avrebbe avuto maggiori possibilità di sopravvivere ai forti venti di un tornado. Altri invece sostengono che colui che l’ha costruito, notoriamente persona estremamente religiosa, abbia optato per un fienile dalla forma circolare in modo che il diavolo non potesse mai “metterlo all’angolo”. Voi a quale credete?
On the outskirts of Oklahoma City, in the community of Arcadia, you will find two iconic attractions of the stretch connecting Tulsa with Oklahoma City, located just a few meters apart. On the right, you will find The Old Round Barn (which has undergone significant improvements since 2016), built in 1898 by local farmer William Harrison Odor. It is 18 meters high and 13 meters wide. Regarding its unique shape, writer William Kaszynski writes, "The reason why the Round Barn is circular remains a mystery. Tornadoes are very common in the Great Plains, and Oklahoma is hit by an average of 47 tornadoes per year. So many theorize that a circular barn would have had a better chance of surviving the strong winds of a tornado. Others argue that the man who built it, a notoriously religious person, opted for a circular barn so that the devil could never ‘corner’ him. Which do you believe?
Dall'altra parte della strada l'enorme bottiglia di soda alta più di 20 metri posizionata nel parcheggio vi ricorda che siete arrivati da "Pops", il paradiso delle bibite gassate. Al suo interno è impressionante l'enorme varietà di bevande gassate: sono centinaia, molto colorate, tantissime mai viste e persino divertenti. Ne ho trovate al gusto bacon, cheesecake ed anche ai gusti più impensabili!
Across the street, the huge soda bottle standing over 20 meters tall in the parking lot reminds you that you've arrived at “Pops,” the paradise of sodas. Inside, the huge variety of fizzy drinks is impressive: there are hundreds of them, very colorful, many never seen before and even fun. I found bacon-flavored ones, cheesecake-flavored ones and even more unimaginable flavors!
AD OKLAHOMA CITY SI COMINCIA A RESPIRARE L'ATMOSFERA WESTERN
Oklahoma City, che nel gergo americano diventa OKC, rappresenta l'Oklahoma al suo meglio. Non solo perchè ne è la capitale e la città più popolosa, ma perchè qui l'anima western, che finalmente cominciamo a respirare, e dei nativi si fonde alla perfezione in quella che è anche conosciuta per essere la "The Big Friendly" per il suo essere molto amichevole. Ad Oklahoma City poi non si perde tempo, si guarda avanti lavorando sodo, ma senza mai dimenticarsi del passato a cui la città è legata a doppio filo. Già, perchè Okc fu fondata in appena sei ore, nel giorno in cui venne istituita la Oklahoma Land Run, la gara che garantiva terreni edificabili (o da dedicare a colture) a chi riusciva ad accaparrarseli per primo. Furono in diecimila ad arrivare in quella che ora è Oklahoma City, una città che ha saputo cambiare il suo volto nel 1992, quando lo stato dell'Oklahoma stanziò miliardi di dollari per rimettere in piedi una città che era lontana parente di quella che possiamo ammirare oggi. Oklahoma City è vivace grazie al Bricktown, il lungo fiume ricco di bar e ristoranti, culturalmente accattivante e nel complesso una cittàa decisamente carina, ma in lei vive una ferita che probabilmente mai verrà suturata. La storia di quel terribile giorno è raccontata (ve ne abbiamo parlato nel viaggio lungo la Route 66 del 2016 - OKLAHOMA CITY NATIONA MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM) nell'Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, il museo-memoriale del primo grande attentato terroristico all'interno degli Stati Uniti. La rilevanza mediatica non è stata ovviamente pari a quella dell'11 settembre 2001, ma tutto l'Oklahoma è ancora oggi segnato dai fatti accaduti il 19 aprile 1995. Erano le 9.01 del mattino quando una bomba contenente più di 2300 kg di fertilizzante a base di nitrato di ammonio esplose davanti al Federal Building: morirono 168 persone (tra cui 19 bambini) e ne rimasero ferite 680.
IN OKLAHOMA CITY YOU START BREATHING THE WESTERN ATMOSPHERE
Oklahoma City, known as OKC, represents Oklahoma at its best. Not only because it is the capital and most populous city of the state, but because here the Western spirit, which we are finally beginning to breathe, and that of the Native Americans blends perfectly in a city that is also known as “The Big Friendly” for its friendliness. In Oklahoma City, there is no time to waste. People look ahead and work hard, but without ever forgetting the past to which the city is closely linked. That's because OKC was founded in just six hours on the day of the Oklahoma Land Run, a race that guaranteed building land (or land for cultivation) to those who managed to grab it first. Thousands of people arrived in what is now Oklahoma City, a city that changed its face in 1992 when the state of Oklahoma allocated billions of dollars to rebuild a city that was very different from the one we can admire today. Oklahoma City is lively thanks to Bricktown, the riverfront lined with bars and restaurants, culturally appealing and overall a very pretty city, but it carries a wound that will probably never heal. The story of that terrible day is told (we talked about it in our 2016 trip along Route 66 - OKLAHOMA CITY NATIONAL MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM) in the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, the museum-memorial of the first major terrorist attack within the United States. The media coverage was obviously not as extensive as that of September 11, 2001, but the whole of Oklahoma is still marked by the events of April 19, 1995. It was 9:01 a.m. when a bomb containing more than 2,300 kg of ammonium nitrate fertilizer exploded in front of the Federal Building, killing 168 people (including 19 children) and injuring 680.
Questa volta abbiamo dato spazio altri importanti luoghi di Okc, partendo dal suo bellissimo State Capitol, visitabile gratuitamente (dalle 8 alle 17 nei giorni feriali, dalle 9 alle 16 nei week end) E' un mix tra una galleria d’arte e musei, lo specchio della storia e della politica della città. Lo State Capitol di Oklahoma City fu costruito tra il 1915 e il 1917 ed è l’unico Campidoglio al mondo circondato da pozzi di petrolio funzionanti: al suo interno 650 stanze, pavimenti e scale in marmo, statue e busti in bronzo, dipinti e ritratti che raccontano la storia dell’Oklahoma e i suoi paesaggi, ma anche il Seal of Oklahoma, la stella a cinque punte con il simbolo delle tribù indiane dell’Oklahoma. Il quarto piano è decisamente il piu affascinante.
This time we focused on other important places in OKC, starting with its beautiful State Capitol, which can be visited free of charge (from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends). It is a mix between an art gallery and a museum, reflecting the history and politics of the city. The Oklahoma City State Capitol was built between 1915 and 1917 and is the only capitol building in the world surrounded by working oil wells. inside, there are 650 rooms, marble floors and staircases, bronze statues and busts, paintings and portraits that tell the story of Oklahoma and its landscape, ibut also the Seal of Oklahoma, the five-pointed star with the symbol of the Indian tribes of Oklahoma. The fourth floor is definitely the most fascinating.
Lasciato il Campidoglio ci dirigiamo verso sud e quindi verso il downtown. Tra le tante cose da vedere da Oklahoma City non perdetevi due musei, il primo dei quali gratuito, l'Oklahoma Contemporary Art Center. Si tratta di un'organizzazione multidisciplinare di arti contemporanee che, attraverso un programma di mostre, spettacoli e programmi educativi all'avanguardia, rappresente una modo originale per entrare a contatto con l'arte di OKC. Il Contemporary Art Center è aperto dalle 11 del mattino sino alle 6 di sera, il giovedì chiude alle 9 di sera.
Leaving the Capitol, we head south and then towards downtown. Among the many things to see in Oklahoma City, don't miss two museums, the first one is the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Center (free of charge). This is a multidisciplinary contemporary arts organization that, through a program of cutting-edge exhibitions, performances, and educational programs, offers an original way to get in touch with the art of OKC. The Contemporary Art Center is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closing at 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
L'altro bellissimo museo che abbiamo visitato è il Factory Obscura Mix-Tape, un'esperienza artistica immersiva e interattiva in cui realtà e finzione si mescolano. Un team di artisti, da muralisti a musicisti, insieme a volontari della comunità, ha saputo creare questo spazio di 6.000 metri quadrati ricco di arte interattiva, adatta sia ai più piccoli che agli adulti, un museo che rende il visitatore confuso e divertito allo stesso tempo. Ogni elemento è realizzato a mano ed è pensato per essere accessibile alle persone con problemi di vista o di udito; ci sono anche spazi progettati come stanze sensoriali per accogliere le persone affette da autismo.
The other beautiful museum we visited is Factory Obscura Mix-Tape, an immersive and interactive artistic experience where reality and fiction blend together. A team of artists, from muralists to musicians, together with community volunteers, created this 6,000-square-meter space filled with interactive art, suitable for both children and adults, a museum that leaves visitors confused and amused at the same time. Every element is handmade and designed to be accessible to people with visual or hearing impairments; there are also spaces designed as sensory rooms to accommodate people with autism.
Da non perdere la seconda parte del museo, situato accanto al principale. Qui, immersi nell'arte del Factory Obscura, potrete rilassarvi ritrovando ricordi della vostra giovinezza. Almeno a noi è successo proprio così! Il Factory Obscura Mix-Tape è aperto tutti i giorni tranne il martedì: il costo del biglietto è di 24 dollari.
