L'inverno del 2025, ed in particolare il periodo natalizio, è stata l'occasione per esplorare due aree sino ad ora a noi sconosciute, prima il Medio Oriente e poi una piccola parte del sud est asiatico, quattro città (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Singapore e Kuala Lumpur) in poco più di 10 giorni grazie ad una bellissima offerta della compagnia aerea Etihad, che da sempre spinge i visitatori di tutto il mondo ad effettuare stopover (brevi soste) nella "sua" città, Abu Dhabi, la capitale degli Emirati Arabi Uniti. E il nostro viaggio natalizio comincia proprio da qui, da Abu Dhabi, dove ci fermeremo due giorni prima di avventurarci verso le prossime destinazioni, due intense e splendide giornate che ci hanno permesso di esplorare il meglio di una città che abbiamo capito immediatamente essere molto diversa dalla vicina Dubai. Qui è tutto più tranquillo, qui si riesce ad interagire decisamente meglio con il mondo arabo. Insomma, qui si respira davvero l'aria del Medio Oriente, dove il lusso lascia comunque spazio alla tradizione, alla storia ed alla culture di un intero popolo.
The winter of 2025, and in particular the Christmas time, was an opportunity to explore two areas that were previously unknown to us: first the Middle East and then a small part of Southeast Asia, four cities (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur) in just over 10 days thanks to a wonderful offer from Etihad Airways, which has always encouraged visitors from all over the world to make stopovers in “its” city, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. And our Christmas trip begins right here, in Abu Dhabi, where we're going to spend two days before venturing on to our next destinations. These two intense and wonderful days have allowed us to explore the best of a city that is very different from neighboring Dubai. Here, everything is quieter, and it is much easier to interact with the Arab culture. In short, here you can really breathe the air of the Middle East, where luxury still leaves room for the traditions, history, and culture of an entire people.
In poco meno di mezzo secolo l'intera regione desertica di Abu Dhabi, un tempo popolata solamente da tribù nomadi, è diventata una delle società più ricche e virtuose di tutto il pianeta, un luogo dove tutto funziona alla perfezione. E dove non potrete restare indifferenti davanti alla maniacale gestione della pulizia, a grattacieli che spuntano come funghi (uno più bello ed accattivante dell'altro) ma anche e soprattutto agli edifici storici del mondo arabo, onestamente tra i più belli che abbiamo mai visto.
In less than half a century, the entire desert region of Abu Dhabi, once populated only by nomadic tribes, has become one of the richest and most virtuous societies on the planet, a place where everything works perfectly. And where you cannot remain unmoved to the obsessive attention to cleanliness, to skyscrapers that are sprouting like mushrooms (each one more beautiful and captivating than the last), but also and above all to the historic buildings of the Arab world, honestly among the most beautiful we have ever seen.
Ma quanto tempo dedicare ad Abu Dhabi? Noi, con lo stopover di due giorni pieni proposto dalla compagnia aerea Etihad, la seconda compagnia più grande degli Emirati dopo Emirates, ci siamo ritrovati giocoforza a non poter cambiare le carte in tavola e, a conti fatti, dobbiamo ammettere che due giornate sono più che sufficienti per visitare la capitale degli Emirati, dedicando anche una mattinata (nella seconda giornata) all'escursione nel deserto sabbioso che circonda la città. Dove dormire ad Abu Dhabi? Come base per l'esplorazione della città abbiamo scelto l'hotel Centro al Manhal By Rotana, un'opzione perfetta (e non dispendiosa) nella parte centrale di una città che non può essere visitata a piedi (per muoverci da una parte all'altra abbiamo utilizzato Uber), motivo per cui qualunque opzione scegliate vi troverete ad essere sempre distanti da qualcosa. Che sia la moschea o il palazzo nazionale, che sia la spiaggia o il downtown. Dalla piscina posizionata in cima all'hotel, tra le altre cose, si gode di una magnifica vista del downtown di Abu Dhabi.
But how much time should you spend in Abu Dhabi? With a two-day stopover offered by Etihad Airways, the second largest airline in the Emirates after Emirates Airline, we found ourselves unable to change our plans and, on balance, we have to admit that two days are more than enough to visit the capital of the Emirates, even dedicating a morning (on the second day) to an excursion into the sandy desert surrounding the city. Where to stay in Abu Dhabi? As a base for exploring the city, we chose the Centro al Manhal By Rotana hotel, a perfect (and inexpensive) option in the central part of a city that cannot be visited on foot (we used Uber to get from one place to another), which is why whatever option you choose, you will always find yourself far from something. Whether it's the mosque or the national palace, the beach or downtown. From the pool at the top of the hotel, among other things, you can enjoy a magnificent view of downtown Abu Dhabi.
Cosa vedere ad Abu Dhabi in due giorni? Noi abbiamo scelto di visitare quella che possiamo definire "la parte centrale della città", ovvero quella a ridosso del Golfo Persico, nella prima giornata, lasciando i luoghi lontani dal centro per la seconda, cominciando la nostra avventura da un luogo davvero magico, il palazzo presidenziale, Qasr Al Hosn (ingresso: 35 Aed) e scegliendo il primo orario disponibile per evitare la folla di turisti che quotidiamente lo visita. Superati i controlli di sicurezza salirete su un piccolo bus che in un paio di minuti vi condurrà all'ingresso di Qasr al Hosn, un autentico gioiello dell'architettura islamica.
What to see in Abu Dhabi in two days? We chose to visit what we might call “the central part of the city,” i.e., the area close to the Persian Gulf, on the first day, leaving the places further from the center for the second day. We began our adventure in a truly magical place, the presidential palace, Qasr Al Hosn (admission: 35 AED), choosing the first available time slot to avoid the crowds of tourists who visit it every day. After passing through security, you will board a small bus that will take you to the entrance of Qasr al Hosn, a true jewel of Islamic architecture, in a couple of minutes.
Il Qasr Al Watan non è tuttavia una residenza, ma ospita gli uffici delle più alte cariche degli Emirati Arabi, le riunioni di governo e gli incontri con le autorità straniere, mostrando ai visitatori il meglio dei valori emiratini. Tutto è curato alla perfezione, dalle enormi sale che mettono quasi soggezione alle pareti decorate minuziosamente, così come i colori utilizzati: l'oro, il bianco ed il blu che simboleggiano il deserto, la pace e le acque del vicino Golfo Persico.
However, Qasr Al Watan is not a residence, but houses the offices of the highest officials of the United Arab Emirates, government meetings, and also meetings with foreign authorities, showing visitors the best of Emirati values. Everything is perfectly curated, from the enormous halls to the meticulously decorated walls and the colors used: gold, white, and blue, symbolizing the desert, peace, and the waters of the nearby Persian Gulf.
Al suo interno troverete diverse aree, dalla casa della conoscenza dove sono esposti antichi oggetti, alla libreria che vanta ben 50.000 libri del mondo arabo (i mobili sui quali sono disposti i volumi hanno una forma semicircolare, donando alla sala quel tocco di raffinatezza che non guasta mai), passando per lo stupendo salone dei banchetti che mostra al visitatore come vengono accolte le alte cariche straniere. La verità è che vi verrà voglia di scoprirne ogni angolo prima di uscire nell'altrettanto scenografica parte esterna, fatta di giardini ed enormi vasche.
Inside, you will find several areas, from the house of knowledge where ancient objects are displayed, to the library that boasts 50,000 books from the Arab world (the furniture on which the volumes are arranged is semicircular in shape, giving the room that touch of refinement that never hurts), to the stunning banquet hall, which shows visitors how highest foreign offices are welcomed. The truth is that you will want to explore every corner before stepping outside into the equally spectacular outdoor area, consisting of gardens and enormous pools.
Se invece avrete scelto di visitare il palazzo in chiusura di giornata (un'opzione da non sottovalutare), potrete assistere anche al Palace in Motion, uno show di video mapping che proietta sulla facciata scene di vita presente, passata e futura degli Emirati Arabi.
If, on the other hand, you choose to visit the palace at the end of the day (an option not to be underestimated), you can also admire Palace in Motion, a video mapping show that projects scenes from the present, past, and future of the United Arab Emirates onto the facade.
Con la gradevole temperatura di circa 20/22 gradi che caratterizza il dicembre degli Emirati Arabi Uniti, abbiamo scelto di passeggiare sino a raggiungere i luoghi successivi, un'opzione che nei periodi più caldi (e qui fa veramente caldo) ci sentiamo di sconsigliare soprattutto nelle ore centrali. Tutto è ordinato e pulito, pericoli non ce ne sono e la passeggiata è davvero rilassante, mentre i grattacieli fanno capolino tra una palma e l'altra. Ci stiamo dirigendo verso il sontuoso Emirates Palace, un hotel a 7 (sette!) stelle tra i più lussuosi al mondo, posizionato a ridosso del Golfo Persico tra giardini curatissimi e una spiaggia davvero stupenda.
With mild temperatures (around 20/22 celsius, which is typical in December in the United Arab Emirates), walk to the next places, an option that we would not recommend during the hottest periods, especially during the middle of the day. Everything is neat and clean, there are no dangers, and the walk is truly relaxing, with skyscrapers peeking out between the palm trees. We are heading towards the sumptuous Emirates Palace, a 7 (seven!) star hotel, one of the most luxurious in the world, located close to the Persian Gulf, surrounded by manicured gardens and a truly beautiful beach.
L'ingresso è consentito anche a chi non alloggia all'interno di una delle circa 400 suites dotate di ongi comfort possibile ed immaginabile, e solamente passeggiando al suo interno si respira l'aria di un lusso quasi irreale. E le oltre cento cupole, impreziosite decori in oro e madreperla e più di mille lampadari sono lì a testimoniarlo. Da qui si gode anche di una magnifica vista sulle Etihad Towers, la nostra prossima fermata.
Admission is also granted to those who are not staying in one of the approximately 400 suites equipped with every conceivable comfort, and merely by walking, you can breathe in the air of an almost unreal luxury. The more than one hundred domes, embellished with gold and mother-of-pearl decorations, and more than a thousand chandeliers are there to witness it. From here, you can also enjoy a magnificent view of the Etihad Towers, our next stop.
Quando si cercano nei vari motori di ricerca immagini che rappresentino Abu Dhabi, una delle più significative è sicuramente quella della Etihad Towers, cinque grattacieli dal design moderno che ospitano uffici, negozi, un alberto di lusso, ristoranti ed anche il bellissimo Observation Deck 300. Tra le cose da fare ad Abu Dhabi in due giorni non può davvero mancare una visita a questo complesso e, per raggiungerlo, vi basterà attraversare la strada rispetto all'Emirates Palace.
When searching for images representing Abu Dhabi on various search engines, one of the most significant is undoubtedly that of the Etihad Towers, five modern skyscrapers housing offices, shops, a luxury hotel, restaurants, and even the beautiful Observation Deck 300. Among the things to do in Abu Dhabi in two days, a visit to this complex is a must, and if you want to get there, simply cross the street from the Emirates Palace
Le torri sono molto alte e si vedono molto bene sia dal già citato Emirates Palace, sia dalla Corniche, la spiaggia principale di Abu Dhabi. Ma una volta qui vi consigliamo di raggiungere la Tower numero 2, dove è posizionato l'Hotel Conrad. Da qui, dopo aver acquistato l'apposito ticket (a partire da 65 AED), potrete salire sino al 74esimo piano del Observation Deck 300, il punto panoramico più alto dell'intera Abu Dhabi. Ecco, le viste migliori le avremo poi durante la prosecuzione del viaggio (sia a Dubai, che poi a Singapore ed a Kuala Lumpur), ma anche quella del "Deck 300" non ci ha lasciato indifferenti. Lo skyline, il Golfo Persico, la spiaggia... il tutto da una posizione davvero privilegiata!
The towers are very huge and can be seen clearly from both the aforementioned Emirates Palace and the Corniche, Abu Dhabi's main beach. But once you are here, we recommend to get to Tower 2, where the Conrad Hotel is located. From here, after purchasing the appropriate ticket (starting at AED 65), you can go up to the 74th floor of Observation Deck 300, the highest viewpoint in Abu Dhabi. We'll have the best views later on during our trip (in Dubai, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur), but the one from Deck 300 did not let us down. The skyline, the Persian Gulf, the beach... all from a truly privileged position!
Tornati con i piedi per terra, in tutti i sensi, ancora una volta vi basterà attraversare la strada per raggiungere il The Founder’s Memorial (ingresso gratuito), il luogo perfetto per imparare a conoscere la storia e la cultura di Abu Dhabi e di tutti gli Emirati Arabi. Il memoriale celebra, infatti, i valori tramandati alle generazioni future e la vita del padre della nazione, lo sceicco Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Se avrete tempo a disposizione potrete accedere al modernissimo centro visitatori, dove potrete assistere alla proiezione di un filmato interpretativo prima di accedere all'esterno, fatto di giardini con piante medicinali del deserto ed una passerella sopraelevata dalla quale ammirare il mare.
Back on solid ground, in every way, once again we just need to cross the road to reach The Founder's Memorial (free admission), the perfect place to learn about the history and culture of Abu Dhabi and all the United Arab Emirates. The memorial celebrates the extraordinary richness inherited by the future generations and the life of the father of the nation, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. If you have time, visit the ultra-modern visitor center, where you can watch an interpretive film before heading outside to the gardens full of desert medicinal plants and an elevated walkway from which to admire the sea.
Il Founder's Memorial confina con l'inizio della Corniche, una lunga lingua di sabbia che per tutti è la spiagga principale di Abu Dhabi. Accedervi però non è così semplice e l'abbiamo scoperto a nostre spese. Già, perchè, dal Founder's Memorial all'accesso vero e proprio alla spiaggia ci sono più di 3 km. Anche se la spiaggia è lì a portata di mano, l'accesso al pubblico (almeno gratuitamente), non è consentito: la prima opzione disponibile è la Family Beach, situata di fronte al Mamsha AlKhair (punto di riferimento storico) ed al Corniche Beach Playground. Come punto di riferimento prendete la caffetteria Tim Hortons. Noi abbiamo scelto di concludere qui la nostra giornata, ma se non ne avete avuto abbastanza delle bellezze di Abu Dhabi, vi consigliamo di raggiungere l'edificio più antico della città (1790), il Qasr Al Hosn (ingresso: 35 AED). Quello che era originariamente un forte e poi la residenza della famiglia reale, oggi è un museo che grazie ad antichi documenti ed oggetti del passato, testimonia la storia di Abu Dhabi, da quando era un piccolissimo villaggio di pescatori sino ai giorni nostri.
The Founder's Memorial borders the beginning of the Corniche, a long strip of sand that everyone considers to be Abu Dhabi's main beach. However, it is not so easy to access it and we had to find out the hard way. That's because there are more than 3 km from the Founder's Memorial to the actual beach entrance. Even though the beach is within easy reach, public access (at least free of charge) is not allowed: the first option available is the Family Beach, located opposite Mamsha AlKhair (a historical landmark) and Corniche Beach Playground. Use the Tim Hortons café as a reference point. We chose to end our day here, but if you haven't had enough of Abu Dhabi's beauty, we recommend visiting the oldest building in the city (1790), Qasr Al Hosn (admission: AED 35). What was originally a fort and then the residence of the royal family is now a museum that, thanks to ancient documents and objects from the past, bears witness to the history of Abu Dhabi, from when it was a tiny fishing village to the present day.
